From May 1st through 3rd, the Fair will present 79 premier art galleries and specialized art book dealers at Paramount Pictures Studios in Hollywood. It is one of the world’s most unique art fairs and provides an incredible opportunity for collectors, exhibitors and enthusiasts alike to experience and discover contemporary and historic works within the ambiance of the mythical soundstages and movie sets of the New York Street Backlot. Reuniting exhibitors from 17 countries worldwide, the Fair proposes a panorama exploring how artists have been and are using photography and moving image. For 2015, a focus will be made on presentations dedicated to the work of one artist with 33 gallery solo shows, highlighting both emerging artists and cutting edge young galleries. In support of young talent, Paris Photo will present INTRODUCING! Young California Photographer Award, in partnership with J.P. Morgan Private Bank. This award will provide an opportunity to identify the talents of tomorrow and honor the work of one M.F.A. candidate enrolled in an art school in California. The finalists and award winner will be exhibited at the Fair. Programme officiel PPLA-LA Times-v2.indd 3 After the success of last year’s UNEDITED! Archives of the LAPD exhibition, the program returns with CALIFORNIA UNEDITED! unveiling an exceptional collection of 19th century photographs from the R.J. Arnold Archive, curated by Anthony Lepore and supported by amanasalto. The Fair program also includes the SOUND & VISION conversation series, organized by the independent curators Douglas Fogle and Hanneke Skerath. SOUND & VISION will offer visitors a wide array of intellectual perspectives on the use of image from some of the leading international artists and curators working today. This edition is made possible by the support and participation of our partners as well as our host, Paramount Pictures Studios. We look forward to sharing this unique visual experience with you at Paris Photo Los Angeles 2015. Florence BOURGEOIS Director Christoph WIESNER Artistic Director 09/04/15 15:42 ACME. MORGAN PRIVATE BANK PRESENTS SPOTLIGHT! PHOTOGRAPHY FROM THE JPMORGAN CHASE ART COLLECTION J.P. Morgan Private Bank is pleased to present Spotlight! Photography from the JPMorgan Chase Art Collection curated by Lisa K. Erf, Director of the JPMorgan Chase Art Program. THIERRY FONTAINE Une île de plus, 2003 JPMorgan Chase Art Collection Spotlight! showcases photographs by ten contemporary artists who use the cinematic technique of a “close-up” to compose their subjects, creating images that challenge and engage. Artists on view include Bernd and Hilla Becher, Nancy Burson, Chuck Close, Tim Davis, Thierry Fontaine, Ori Gersht, Louise Lawler, Richard Prince, Thomas Ruff and Carrie Mae Weems. Created in 1959 by David Rockefeller, the JPMorgan Chase Art Collection features more than 30,000 artworks located in 450 offices worldwide. Its commitment to inspire, to provoke new perspectives, and to unite people and ideas across cultures, is carried forward today. BMW ART & CULTURE PRESENTS WILD STYLE: MAZACCIO & DROWILAL Mazaccio & Drowilal present Wild Style, an anthropologic and iconographic, and above all photographic study of animals and the contemporary cultural representations. MAZACCIO & DROWILAL Wild Style - Mars Attacks, 2013 Résidence BMW au musée Nicéphore Niépce, Chalon-sur-Saône © Mazaccio & Drowilal “The figures and the objects collected in Wild Style evoque kitch prints, 1990s soppy or flashy, often found on cheap t-shirts, childish iron-on transfers, Automotive body paint, personalized mugs or household items, street or garden decore… Wild Style appears such as a catalogue of commodified forms of animal life by image, to the point that the separation between the real and its representation becomes imperceptible.” Extract from the essay, “Spoiler Alert!” by Fani Morières and Nicolas Heimendinger in Wild Style. LEICA PRESENTS SILENZIO!, FRANCOIS FONTAINE Leica celebrates fine art photography with an exhibition of François Fontaine’s work entitled SILENZIO!. An homage to the cinema of the 40s to today. ARNOLD Glass Plate 032-41 circa 1886-1898 Courtesy of El Paso de Robles Area Historical Society UNEDITED! is a Paris Photo Los Angeles exhibition program that unveils rare or never-before-seen photographic material. After the success of last year’s UNEDITED! exhibition dedicated to the archives of the Los Angeles Police Department, Paris Photo is happy to present for its 2015 edition, CALIFORNIA UNEDITED! The Archives of R.J. Arnold exhibits for the first time in Los Angeles an exceptional collection of photography from late 19th century California. These rarely-seen glass plate photographs depict the communities of Central California through the eyes of one photographer, Richard J. Arnold. A remarkable portraitist, Arnold mastered interior lighting, capturing the details of the delicate poses and pensive glances of his subjects who come to life before our eyes. We discover in some of his portraits the work of a talented ‘retoucher’ who literally wiped away wrinkles and recovered the youth of his sitters. Unlike most turn-of-the-century archives, Arnold’s photographs include a rare glimpse into the early Latino, Asian, and Native American communities of California. Time has left its irreparable trace cracking the decomposing emulsion of these photographs. It is thanks to the guidance and efforts of artist Anthony Lepore and the patient dedication of the volunteers of the El Paso de Robles Area Historical Society that these phantasmal images have resurfaced, salvaged from under layers of decay.
