Every morning, LCGHD staff visits the beaches to collect information, record observations and enter the data into a computer program called Virtual Beach. The program uses a mathematical system developed by the EPA to predict the levels of E. coli bacteria that can increase your chances of getting sick when participating in water activities. Three days a week, LCGHD staff collects water quality samples for E. coli analysis to validate accuracy and reliability. LCGHD provides the daily prediction to beach operators. If the prediction shows that the water quality is expected to be poor, LCGHD asks beach operators to post an advisory sign not to swim at that beach. Watch for water quality signage at the beach when deciding whether to go into the water. Additionally, avoid the water for 24 to 48 hours after a rain of more than one-half inch in 24 hours. Visit https://www.lcghd.org/beach for more information and link to the beach water quality Nowcast. Paddle Boarding – Fit and Fun by Brian Fowler, Chief of Outdoor Education, Lake Metroparks You’ve probably seen Stand Up Paddle Boarding in magazines, on TV and along the coast. The sport, also called SUP, is an offshoot of a sport Hawaiians have been doing for hundreds of years which became popular on the mainland about a decade ago. Locally, the look, fun and fitness of paddle boarding is taking off, and you, too, can kick off your flip flops and give it a try at Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park. SUP offers a great core workout and can be aerobic if you pick up the pace. You should start out on a calm day with little or no wind. It’s easy to learn, and most people pick it up on their first try if they’re fitted with the right board and the conditions are good. At Fairport Harbor, starting off from the beach in shallow water and behind the breakwall, conditions are better than in open water. Rentals are just $10 an hour or you can take a 1½ hour lesson for $20 any Saturday morning or Thursday evening. Registration is required. Sign up online at lakemetroparks.com or call 440-358-7275. Boards and lessons are available through Labor Day. FREE Programs! Use It or Lose It! by Beth Horvath, Health & Fitness Director, Lake County Y You’ve heard it before. Use it or lose it. But did you know that getting daily physical activity is one of the best things you can do to counteract the negative effects of aging? Physical activity affects, protects and sustains both the brain and the musculoskeletal system. A lack of physical activity reduces the amount of oxygen to the brain. This contributes to cell damage and loss of cognitive skills and muscle control. But exercise brings extra oxygen and glucose to the brain, both of which are crucial to its function. In response, the body forms new capillaries to carry the blood to nerve cells and boosts brain chemicals that protect neurons and strengthen their connections. That increases the speed of messages through the brain. According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons: n As muscles age, they shrink and take longer to respond. n Tendons become stiffer and less able to tolerate stress. n Handgrip strength decreases, making routine tasks more difficult. n Heart muscle becomes less capable, making us tire more quickly. n Joint motion becomes more restricted and flexibility decreases. n Joints become inflamed and arthritic as the cushioning cartilage begins to break down. The good news is we now know that much of the musculoskeletal deterioration previously attributed to normal aging is actually the result of inactivity. The less physical activity and exercise we do, the less capable we become. So use it or lose it! Congratulations to: Sharon Zakrajsek, winner of the second quarter prize drawing, who received a relaxation CD. See Step Tracker Log Sheet for details. Help your child live a healthy lifestyle. n Improve eating habits: Cut out foods that are high in fat (fried foods, desserts, etc.) and low in nutrition. n Get the kids moving: Turn off the TV, computer and video games, and encourage them to walk, move, run, bike and jump! n Be a good role model: Encourage eating meals that are healthy together. Teach proper portion control and don’t use food as a reward or a punishment. Lake Health can help. Join us for B.E. S.T.R.O.N.G., a family-based, 8-week fun-filled pediatric weight-loss program to help overweight children fight obesity. Session begins Thursday, September 24. For information on the B.E. S.T.R.O.N.G. program or to register for the next session, contact Samantha Froimson, RD, LD, in the Lake Health Wellness Institute at 440-375-8735.
