New Orleans' 15 Essential Hotels
1 Ace Hotel New Orleans
The Ace Hotel is the newest kid on the block, but it’s
already turning heads. This Portland, Oregon-based
brand opened in March in a 1928 Art Deco building (it
was previously Max Burnett’s Furniture Store until the
1970s) on Carondelet Street in the Warehouse District.
In addition to 234 rooms, the Ace also has music venue
Three Keys, which hosts frequent performances.
Stumptown Coffee, a Portland-based roaster, has
opened its first Southern location in the property, and
Josephine Estelle, the hotel’s restaurant headed by
James Beard Award finalists Andy Ticer and Michael
Hudman, offers Italian and Southern inspired fare.

2 The Roosevelt New Orleans, A
Waldorf Astoria Hotel
This Waldorf Astoria hotel has been a New Orleans
legend since 1893, and today offers some of the best
dining and drinking New Orleans has to offer. The
hotel’s Domenica restaurant, headed by James Beardwinning Executive Chef Alon Shaya, is a must for Italian

cuisine lovers. At the legendary Sazerac Bar, you can
enjoy the namesake drink known as “America’s first
cocktail.” The rooftop pool and the stunning lobby—if
you’re in town during the holidays, come check out the
splendid decorations—are enough to blow you away,
too.

Monteleone family since the 1880s, when it started out
as a 64-room hotel, and since then has grown to 570
rooms, 55 of those suites. The Monteleone has been
home to the legendary Carousel Bar and Lounge since
1949, which got a major overhaul a few years ago, but
still retains all its original charm and legendary rotating
bar. The hotel is also known for its literary legacy—it’s
the hub for the annual Tennessee Williams/New
Orleans Literary Festival— and was a favorite spot for
Williams, Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, and
Truman Capote, to name a few.

4 Le Pavillon Hotel
Located on Poydras Street, only a brief walk from the
French Quarter, Le Pavillon’s elegant European
influences shine. On the list of National Register of
Historic Places, the building was constructed in 1902,
and like many really old places in New Orleans, could
possibly be haunted. (The hotel even offers a “haunted
history” package for those with adventurous spirits.)
Crystal chandeliers in the lobby, European antiques, and
marble columns will delight those with traditional taste.
Le Pavillon has 226 hotel rooms and suites with themes
like “European Castle” and “Art Deco,” and offers a
nightly PB&J service for nighttime snackers.

5 Soniat House
Originally three townhouses built by Joseph Soniat
Duffossat in the 1830s, this charming French Quarter
property was acquired and renovated into a boutique
hotel by Rodney and Frances Smith in 1982, and is
widely considered to be one of the best hotels in the city.
The Soniat House has works of art lining the walls, and
celebrates the original homes’ architecture with high
ceilings and European antiques and furnishings. This
may not have modern amenities like a fitness center or a
pool, but guests who stay at the Soniat House are usually
seeking some Southern hospitality and a traditional New
Orleans experience.

6 Hyatt Regency New Orleans
Aesthetically, this one may have a little less New Orleans
charm compared to others on this list, but its central
downtown location (steps away from the Mercedes-Benz
Superdome and Smoothie King Center, and right in
front of the Loyola Avenue streetcar), huge ballroom,
lobby, and meeting spaces make it a great pick for
business travelers. Borgne, the Hyatt’s seafood-focused
restaurant, is another standout establishment by chef
and restaurateur John Besh.

8 Ritz Carlton
Plush linens, feather bedding, marble bathrooms, and
top-notch service — guests know what to expect from
the Ritz-Carlton name, and the New Orleans location is

1998. The Davenport Lounge (which also offers an
Afternoon Tea service daily) features live performances
by jazz trumpeter Jeremy Davenport four nights a week,
and the Ritz-Carlton’s luxurious spa, with more than
100 services, can easily compete for the title of best in

Contemporary meets Victorian in this renovated
mansion that combines modern luxuries with all the
charm of an old, private New Orleans residence. Located
on Espanade Avenue on the edge of the French Quarter,

activity the Quarter has to offer, without having to be
right in the thick of it. The Melrose Mansion offers guest
rooms and suites with marble bathrooms (some with
Jacuzzi tubs), cathedral ceilings, and hardwood floors.

12 International House Hotel
This chic International House on Camp Street has 117
rooms, suites, and penthouses, free WiFi, 24-hr
concierge service, and Apple TV in certain rooms.
There’s no pool in this one, but if you feel like relaxing
you can saunter on down to Loa, the hotel’s
sophisticated cocktail bar head by renowned bartender
Alan Walter, who in a nod to the bar’s religious
references (loa are spirits in the Voodoo pantheon) is
referred to as a “Spirit Handler.”

13 Q&C Hotel/Bar
The Q&C (formerly known as the Queen & Crescent) is a
stone’s throw away from French Quarter and Warehouse
District attractions. This property got a stylish
Restoration Hardware-esque upgrade when it was fully
renovated in 2014. It’s pet-friendly, has free Wi-Fi, and
the Q&C Bar is comfortable place to grab a cocktail
when you’re ready to retreat from busy downtown.

14 Old No. 77 Hotel and
Chandlery
The Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery, rebranded from the
old Ambassador Hotel, has historic roots from 1854,
when it was a coffee warehouse and then a chandlery (a
retail supply business) serving the Port of New Orleans.
Located on Tchoupitoulas Street in the Central Business
District, the Old No. 77 has an urban, industrial
aesthetic, and has partnered with Where Y’Art gallery on
Royal Street to feature works of art in an annex gallery.
The hotel also lays claim to Compère Lapin, the
restaurant that Top Chef New Orleans finalist Nina
Compton opened last year.

15 Maison Dupuy
Restored 19th century townhouses set in a quieter part
of the French Quarter make up the Maison Dupuy Hotel.
Bistreaux, the in-house restaurant, offers Creole and
American fare, and guests have access to a fitness center
and heated outdoor pool. The romantic, lush courtyards
are a prime spot for weddings and other memorable
events, and make a great spot for relaxing when
unoccupied, but Bourbon Street is only two blocks away
when you’re ready to rejoin the outside world.
