NEWSLETTER - Dalby South State School
NEWSLETTER www.dalbsoutss.eq.edu.au Term 4 Week 6 2015 Dear Parents and Friends I was pleased to see our Year Six students taking part in the local Remembrance Day service held yesterday. The service was once again hosted by our local RSL and we are certainly fortunate that Mr Coles and his small band of helpers took the time to mark this special day with very moving service. It is certainly very important that our students are involved in these special days as they are the future of such occasions. Those students that attended were excellent ambassadors of our school which was very pleasing indeed. Back at school all classes paused for a minutes silence collectively to acknowledge the ultimate sacrifices that have been made by so many in conflicts across the world. We also had a visit from Arthur Martin this morning to discuss further the extension of our tuckshop which we hope to progress in 2016. We have applied for funding support from the State Government along with many other schools across Qld. We think of course that Dalby South’s needs far out way any other project being proposed by other schools! We are certainly keeping our fingers crossed that we might be successful with our application. Tonight is our annual Performing Arts evening that will take place in Dalby State High’s Performing Arts Complex. We certainly appreciate their allowing us the use of their venue for this event. Students from both our choir program and our instrumental program will be performing and we welcome one and all to this event. Things begin at 6:30 pm and we look forward to seeing you there! Til next week This week our Positive Behaviour for Learning topic is: Be Safe- Use Equipment the Right Way. Our PB4L lessons have focussed on teaching students to use equipment the right way in all areas of the school. Students are expected to use equipment as intended, in the right way as they have been taught, in all areas of the school. Teachers regularly prompt students with statement such as: “We are going to be safe today by using all equipment properly.” They have also discussed with students some examples of using equipment at school the right way. Examples 1. Using a ruler to draw a line. 2. 3. Placing headphones on head Using a microscope, camera etc. Dave for the Admin Team DATES TO REMEMBER 12 November 16 November 18 November 19 November 24 November 25 November 26 November 1 December Performing Arts Night 6.30pm (Dalby State High School Hall) P & C Meeting 7.30pm Golden Letters : 3C, 3D, 4A, 4B, 4C, 4/5D Junior Swimming Carnival (P-2) 2016 Prep Orientation (9:15-10:45) Student Leadership Speeches—2016 Christmas Service—Baptist Church 2 December Golden Letters: 5A, 5B, 5C, 5/6E, 6A, 6B 3 December Christmas Bash 7 December Year 6 Graduation 11 December Last Day of School 18 January School Office Opens 25 January Student Free Day 26 January Australia Day 27 January FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL FOR 2016 Year 6 whole day visit to DSHS Owen St Dalby Q 4405. This Prep Enrolment Interview is a time for parents to complete all of the required permission forms and questionnaire (as well as enrolment forms if necessary). If you have not already provided a copy of your child's birth certificate, it would be appreciated if you could bring along a copy to the interview. It is also a time for parents to receive all of the necessary information to help their child get started in Prep for 2016 (e.g. uniform requirements, book lists, countdown calendar). We encourage you to ask us any questions that you have about enrolment at Dalby South. You are welcome to bring along your child to the interview, but this is not essential. P&C NEWS CHRISTMAS BASH Christmas Bash and end of the school year is fast approaching. This year we will be running a multi-draw raffle and ask parents if they would donate items for this. Anything nonperishable would be suitable from books, stationary, gift vouchers, hats, anything you would be excited to win. We will be asking for helpers on the night, 3 December, so please put it in your diary and notices for this will come out closer to the time. We have been working very hard to develop our reading skills and strategies every day. We have been building our ‘reading stamina’ and can now read independently from our individual book box for 20 minutes! We have also been completing purposeful reading activities to ensure that we are putting our comprehension skills and ‘fix-it’ strategies into practise. 1B have been using the Seven Steps to Writing to ‘think, talk, sketch and write’ about interesting personal experiences in our Good Writing Books. Our focus has been on our use of adjectives and the ‘Show Not Tell’ method to make our writing much more exciting for the reader. In Science, we are currently exploring light and sound. We have been busy presenting persuasive orals in English and 1B have been learning about digital and analogue time in Maths. There is lots of fun and learning to be had in our classroom! ALL SCHOOLS TOUCH Dalby South State School put together two magnificent touch teams whom were ready and raring to represent our school at All School Touch held in Redlands last weekend. 24 students along with coaches Kasey White, Sarah Dodd and managers Miss Moore and Mrs Ackery attended the carnival and played valiantly. After a few wins on Saturday, both teams secured a place in the quarter finals, but alas were knocked out. Coaches and Managers are immensely proud of the students, who showed respectful behaviour and great sportsmanship across the weekend. A great weekend had by all. Great Work Dalby South. Our Year 6 students participated in a Remembrance Service at Anzac Park yesterday morning. The students represented our School tremendously by laying a wreath and listening intently to the amazing stories. We all learnt how to work as a team and communicate with others, some games. We played swamp grid, spider web and toxic waste. All of these games involved trust, courage and teamwork. We all participated in fun and exciting activities like feeding birds, looking for fireflies and we saw a red belly black snake during the nature walk. The kitchen provided us with yummy food to eat like pancakes, brownies and watermelon for morning tea, salad and lasagne for dinner. For breakfast we had a choice of egg, bacon, toast or cereal. The students and staff enjoyed their stay. We are now ready to be leaders for 2016! Written by Mc Kenzee Hale and Shayneka Steinohrt
