We want youth and family ministers and their families to know that Faulkner University values their contributions to the Lord’s church. As you may be aware, Faulkner University has a beautiful and growing campus. Enjoy your stay, enjoy the fellowship, and enjoy the spiritual feast. Dr. Billy D. Hilyer, President Faulkner University WELCOME MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN Welcome to the beautiful campus of Faulkner University, a Christian university. We seek to be biblical in doctrine, conservative in practice, and liberal in love. As our dean emeritus, Dr. Cecil May, likes to say, “We are determined to stay ‘in the middle of the Bible,’ which is where we believe the majority of our congregations and members are to be found.” The university is pleased to offer the 70th annual Faulkner Lectures as a service to the Lord’s church—leaders, teachers, and members all! The event provides an opportunity for instruction, inspiration, and fellowship for Christians throughout the southeastern United States and beyond. This year’s theme, “Women Empowered by God,” addresses a delicate, controversial, and contemporary issue. Our purpose is to encourage, motivate, and inspire not only Christian women but also Christian men as we all seek to be Christians empowered by God. We have packed full this year’s event with themed topics, special tracks, and entertainment for all. 2 G. Scott Gleaves, Dean of V. P. BLACK PREACHER CHALLENGE Twenty-one years ago the beloved V. P. Black began the Preacher Challenge. Donating the revenue of two of his gospel meetings to the training of young men to preach and teach the Gospel, brother Black offered the challenge to other gospel preachers and leaders to raise or to give $1,000 or more to the Bible department. The V. P. Black College of Biblical Studies has received more than $1,000,000 in the 21-year history of the challenge. Anyone can be a part of the new challenge by simply giving or raising $1,000 or more by May 31, the end of our fiscal year. Contact Sam Long for more information at [email protected] or at (334) 386-7256. HONOR TO WHOM HONOR IS DUE Donnie and Sherrie Hilliard are a wonderful Christian couple, indelibly associated with “Marriage and Family” through the Cloverdale Center for Family Strengths, Our Families magazine, and the Tower of Strength Marriage Award. Sherrie is Donnie’s wife. She is never less than that and is always gloriously conscious of that, but she is more than that in her own right: An accomplished artist, a musician, and a horsewoman. She painted the portraits that hang in the atrium of the HarrisParker (Bible) building. Donnie was a successful coach at Faulkner University in his early years. Sherrie said, “I thought I was marrying a coach. I didn’t know I was marrying a preacher.” But she obviously feels blessed to be married to this preacher. Donnie earned his Ph.D. in Family Studies from University of Alabama and in collaboration with his major professor and mentor, Nick Stinnet, researched and wrote Magnificent Marriage. He serves as director of the Cloverdale Center for Family Strengths at Faulkner University, which focuses on strengthening marriages rather than intervening in problem marriages. He is a powerful and effective teacher and preacher and has held many seminars on home, dating, and family issues, combining clear biblical teaching with practical experience and wisdom. Donnie and Sherrie have two children: Sarah, married to Allen Roberts, and David. Both live in Nashville and are involved with the Antioch church of Christ. FRIENDS OF THE RESTORATION The American Restoration Movement continues to impact the churches of Christ in general and Faulkner University in particular. All Bible majors are required to study this important period of religious history when minds awakened to the possibility of Christian unity through the restoration of primitive Christianity as practiced and taught in the New Testament. The principles inherent in the American Restoration Movement continue to play a major role in the V. P. Black College of Biblical Studies. Friends of the Restoration is an association of individuals who are passionate about the history of the churches of Christ in America. Faulkner University hosts the Friends of the Restoration series each year during the lectureship.
