Dear Olympia Film Society Friends and Members, Last year we celebrated 90 years of the Capitol Theater and we continue to honor the stage and screen through the non-­‐stop myriad of films and concerts that happen throughout the year. We also put into motion our strategic plan to STABILIZE, BUILD, and GROW our future. We will continue to focus on protecting and saving our extraordinary Capitol Theater, upgrade our presentation technology, improve our operations and create solid plans for fundraising. With our strategic road map in hand, we can see many challenges to come. But also many opportunities. We are a tenacious group capable of conquering these challenges with your continued loyal support. We hope you will enjoy learning about the remarkable activities that our stalwart group of staff, volunteers, and community have produced and supported. Olympia Film Society
The Olympia Film Society (OFS) was founded in 1980 by a local group of film enthusiasts who sought to share their love of cinematic art with the community. Now, more than thirty years later, OFS has grown to become a beloved organization to film, music, and art lovers, and is regarded as the première presenter of independent and underrepresented art in the South Sound community. OFS is the sole caretaker of the historic Capitol Theater, a 1924 silent era movie palace located in downtown Olympia, Washington. OFS takes pride in preserving the historical purpose of the theater through a variety of programming. Although the “F” stands for film, OFS is known for producing unique, award winning concerts and performances by international, national, and local musicians and performers. Film Programming - Year Round
Throughout the year, our weekly film series showcases independent, popular, and local films that engage our community in dialogue about social, economic, and cultural ideas and issues from around the world. Sometimes it’s just about pure fun and escape. You can enjoy animated family-­‐
friendly titles (Kids Club), revival movies (Silver Screenings) silent films with live musical accompaniment (Silents!), and cult classics (Fright Club). This year our schedule was packed with Academy Award winners; Selma, Birdman, Whiplash, Theory of Everything as well as provocative documentaries Seymour: An Introduction, Jordorowsky’s Dune, Finding Vivian Maier, bridging film and music with The Beatles: Hard Day’s Night and The Alloy Orchestra performing live to the silent film, The Son of the Sheik. Included in our repertoire is our Local Filmmaker’s Spotlight. In 2015 OFS presented The Barefoot Bandit, by local documentarian Carly Bodmer, The Grand Rescue with local Grand Teton rescuers, and Return of the River by filmmakers John Gussman and Jessica Plumb. Many of these events emphasized interactive and educational opportunities through panel discussions where viewers could share ideas and ask questions of the filmmakers and guests. “...OFS is a steady place in my life to return to again and again to indulge my imagination and be around the community.” – OFS Member 3 2014 – 2015 Annual Report Concerts and Performances
It was a record-­‐breaking year for live events at the Capitol Theater! We were fortunate to welcome some world-­‐class talent to our stage, including two massive SOLD OUT shows from Grammy Award winners Lucinda Williams and Neko Case. Other illustrious acts included Cat Power, Mudhoney, Jonathan Richman, La Luz, Greg Brown, Rodrigo Amarante, Hell's Belles, Ex Hex, John Doe, Speedy Ortiz, Girl Trouble, Hari Kondabolu, Sandra Bernhard, Mike Watt, Survival Knife, The Mattson 2 and Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls. We've seen 200+ performers on our stage. Live show attendance is booming and the community is loving it. The message they're sending is loud and clear: More live shows! It should come as no surprise that our annual events are only improving with age. Repeal Day, Night of the Living Tribute Bands, Duck the Malls and the Academy Awards Oscar Party never fail to excite and delight. These beloved events enjoy consistently strong attendance, year in and year out, with fresh surprises and good times guaranteed. True to form, the fine members of our community partnered with us in presenting their own unique and popular events, bringing to the stage a wide variety of top-­‐notch entertainment, such as Stonewall Youth's Queer Rock Camp, Olympia Comics Festival, Elvis Birthday Bash, Capitol Comedy Festival, TUSH! and Gritty City Sirens Burlesque, Daniel & the Lion, The New Old Time Chautauqua vaudeville show and the United Way’s presentation of the Black Lillies. November 2014 marked our 31st Olympia Film Festival, continuing one of the nation’s longest running film festivals, packed with 10 days of exciting, cutting edge, educational, and memorable movies and concert events. Some of our favorite guests included Matt Smith (My Year with the Nuns), Mary Woronov (Eating Raoul, Rock n’ Roll High School), Ian Svenonius (Soft Focus), Seattle rock legends Mudhoney and Girl Trouble who helped to kick off our opening night fest. Over the next few months, you will begin to see exciting updates on the 32nd Annual Olympia Film Festival. So far we have more than 35 films that cover a diverse spectrum and will appeal to many of you. As the festival grows ever closer, our focus will turn to arranging print traffic to ensure that all the films arrive well within their screening dates. All of this will go forward powered by the positive momentum of the supportive OFS staff, volunteers, and sponsors, and the synchronistic alignment of the stars! Community Groups Benefit at OFS
OFS offered dozens of community non-­‐profit organizations the opportunity to raise money and awareness for their group or cause through our non-­‐profit benefit rate. Stonewall Youth, Planned Parenthood, KAOS 89.3fm Community Radio, United Way of Thurston County, Garden Raised Bounty, Temple Beth Hatfiloh, local schools and colleges benefited more than $20,000. Education
OFS plays an important role in developing community interest in the art and beauty of film. In the spring of 2015, “OFS Film School”, was launched. We kicked it off with "35 is ALIVE!", a hands on experimental project lead by local filmmaker and former programming director of the Boston Video and Film Foundation, Devon Damonte. Devon is a longtime OFS member, volunteer, and faculty at TESC whose expertise in experimental animation, filmmaking, and visual arts is nationally praised! These are “no skills required” workshops for budding filmmakers and curiosity crafters of all ages. 5 2014 – 2015 Annual Report Mezzanine Art Space
The Art in the Mezzanine program provides a space for local visual artists to present their work in the mezzanine, alcoves and hallways of the Capitol Theater. Some highlights include Rick Perry’s illustrations of kooky characters, mixed media pop-­‐art from artist Mark Randall, and 31st Film Festival artist Anna Firth. The Mezzanine Art Space program has served over 200 local artists, with artists featured on the walls of the theater, and participating in our annual Duck the Malls Arts and Crafts Bazaar. Local artists benefited over $35,000 in total sales from 2,200 shoppers who attended Duck the Malls. Volunteerism
We depend upon the efforts of the OFS volunteer community -­‐ some 200 active, community minded cinephiles who give their time in service of film, music and art. The spirit of volunteerism remains strong and vibrant at OFS! We are seeing new faces weekly, and long time volunteers are evolving their roles through cross training and taking on leadership duties that help to support the staff in their daily work. We continue to work towards simplified and streamlined processes and operation of the theater. We engage in active recruitment campaigns and have seen a new round of volunteers rapidly climb the training ladder to become new leaders in the volunteer community. We have made a point of honoring and recognizing the vital role of volunteers in our mission and are pleased to report that sign ups have increased along with scheduled coverage over the last quarter. Olympia is a town that chooses to be more spectacular than mere demographics and economics would suggest it could be. OFS volunteers secure the Capitol Theater for future generations of Olympians with their selfless labor and dedication!
6 2014 – 2015 Annual Report Technical & Facilities
Over this last year we have put some much-­‐needed work and time into the historic stage of the Capitol Theater. It has become increasingly necessary because of our continuing commitment to host quality local and national stage events, shows, and movies while offering a space that is functionally modern, yet aesthetically inspiring. This year we have focused on planning for future upgrades, general housekeeping, addressing issues with safety, and the functionality of both the space and our audio system. We have started to remove, recycle, and repurposed some of the theaters outdated unused or nonfunctioning stage clutter. This has opened up some much needed space and vastly improved the reliability and safety of the stage. A very exciting and very necessary first step in our upgrading of the audio system was the addition of three new QSC audio amplifiers and 25 microphone cables. These few minor and affordable upgrades have already improved our ability to reliably put on events and will integrate seamlessly into the future audio plans. There is a lot more to be done, but it's an exciting time as we bring back the quality and beauty to such a historic stage and theater. In the projection booth, it has been another great year that has seen a new diversity in programming. From archival 35mm to Direct Animation Film Loops to 4K Digital restorations of classic films and new digital format from local and international filmmakers. This dynamic programming provides a welcome challenge to our great all-­‐volunteer projection staff and we have risen to the challenge. We have heard from audiences and filmmakers, some literally in tears, saying they have never seen or heard their movies look and sound so good! That said, we still have many new improvements in mind, which are currently in the works. We are currently planning a Phase 2 and even Phase 3 Cinema Upgrades involving audio improvements, Grand Drape repair and deployment, masking system upgrades and other surprises that will take OFS to the next dimension…if you catch our drift. We hope to implement these new improvements as soon as we have plans and funding solidified so stay tuned and involved! 7 2014 – 2015 Annual Report The People
