The Importance of Network Traffic Monitoring to Maximize Revenue and Profits for Current and NGN Networks NAB Show April 18-23, 2009 LasVegas, NV Maximizing SS7 & Next Generation Networks Who Is Tekno Telecom? The Company • • • • • • • • • • Profitable Corporation with Zero debt In business 40 years Network Management Experts Specializing at monitoring and extracting data from networks and turning it into valuable information Over 130 + customers in North America and Internationally 14 patents awarded and more pending Customer & market driven – 10,000 systems sold and installed Fast & Agile development with no corporate bureaucracy Focuses on SS7 & IP with xCDR generation and reporting for Network Monitoring & Revenue Assurance Functions Most recent product introduction – NetInterConnect – SS7 feeds to CABS (Carrier Access Billing) systems. Maximizing SS7 & Next Generation Networks Why should Network Monitoring Technology be important to You? • • • • • • Telecom carriers with unprotected legacy TDM networks are experiencing network traffic revenue losses as high as 45%. Key billing fields such as CPN, CIC, OCN, traffic originator are missing or damaged in the switch CDRs (Call Detail Records). If your carrier partner or service delivery agent cannot adequately monitor, identify, and measure network traffic then you and your carrier agent or partner will not receive revenue for the services or content that you deliver to their network or subscribers. Your content can be stolen and mass delivered by an unscrupulous carriers to subscribers or end users with no compensation to you. In the near future content will be increasingly delivered to multiple carriers, multiple carrier network types and topologies, multiple switch/router vendors, and switch/router technologies. Network monitoring will be required to obtain service revenue/QoS (Quality of Service). Maximizing SS7 & Next Generation Networks Background: Telecom Inter-Carrier Billing Major Causes of Lost Revenue… • Phantom Traffic • Traffic terminating on your network without compensation • Information required for billing cannot be determined • Switch billing CDRs (Call Detail Records) are damaged, this may or may not be intentional due to myriad of switch vendors and introduction of new switch technologies (e.g., IP softswitch) • By-Pass Traffic • Access traffic terminating on your network without compensation • Traffic is disguised to appear to be a local call • Is intentional to avoid access charges • Internal Problems – Switch vs Billing System • Switch/Trunking errors, Switch Translation Table errors • Outdated dial plan data • Switch CDR and Exchange Data Mediation Issues • Faulty Business Logic, etc. Maximizing SS7 & Next Generation Networks How many Telecom Switch Revenue Leaks are there? Switch too busy to generate CDR’s Billing turned off for Trunk Group Direct Trunk Reduce Tandem Cost Toll Bypass Access ISP Traffic Wireless - Bill on MTA – all calls local? Avoidance Data Base Dips Capital $ Avoidance No Intercarrier Agreement Dipper of Last Resort Network Optimization Maximizing SS7 & Next Generation Networks Phantom Traffic Multiple Systems involved in Billing Fraud VOIP Solution: Carriers use Signaling Network SS7 CDRs Maximizing SS7 & Next Generation Networks Solution: Carriers Use SS7 CDRs & SIP xDRs Maximizing SS7 & Next Generation Networks How Carriers use SS7 CDRs to solve the problems of Phantom, ByPass, Unidentified Network Traffic, etc. Inter-Carrier Billing Revenue Assurance Global Call Trace To recover revenue carriers should use SS7 CDRs to: • Monitor Network Traffic – Track all traffic using SS7 CDRs. Use SS7 CDRs as an independent data source to track all inbound and outbound network traffic. • Measure Network Traffic – How big is the problem? Use SS7 CDRs to properly jurisdictionalize all network traffic. • Manage Network Traffic – What to do about problem? Use SS7 CDRs to identify and isolate lost traffic for billing. • Monetize Network Traffic – What steps to recover revenue? Properly rate and invoice all lost traffic for billing. Maximizing SS7 & Next Generation Networks Protocol Analysis Quality of Service SS7 to AMA Compare Troubleshooting Fraud Reciprocal Compensation Maintenance Traffic Engineering Billing Capacity Management Importance of Network Monitoring Technology Next Generation Networks As a Telecom manager everyday you swim in a sea of risky waters. Your Company's survival depends on your knowledge of what is lurking below the surface in your network. New advanced network technologies and protocols will bring to your Company new opportunities and new threats. The store, which initially launches in the UK, and will be rolled out across Europe in stages, debuted with 10,000 movies and television shows to buy to own, or to rent for a 24 hour period, including blockbusters from Hollywood studios Warner Bros., Paramount, and Universal, as well as content from independent distributors. “Download to own” costs between £6.99 ($9.95) and £16.99 ($24.23) depending on the title, while a 24 hour rental costs between £2.49 ($3.55) and £3.99 ($5.69). Both services will gives users a PC version and a version especially formatted for mobile. The store will initially be available on Samsung’s flagship phone the Tocco Ultra Edition—which is also its best selling device in the UK, and will be rolled out to more models in the upcoming months. Samsung’s ultimate goal, however, is to give consumers access to their movie store on any of its electronic devices that are IPenabled, including its notebooks, music players and televisions. The testing took place in the Special Ubiquitous Zone, an area of the northern Japanese city of Sapporo in Hokkaido, designated by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications in 2008 as a wireless communications testing area, and used prototypes of the wireless LTE base stations developed jointly by NTT DoCoMo, Fujitsu and Fujitsu Laboratories which, with the use of MIMO technology, resulted in high-speed wireless transmissions in the range of 120 Mbps (using 10 MHz bandwidth) in Sapporo’s urban environment. Vehicle to prevent network traffic fraud and lost revenue in real time. Vehicle for inter-carrier billing (CABS) to augment/enhance/replace switch billing data with superior SS7 to completely bill all revenues. Vehicle for known certainty when to negotiate Interconnection contracts, Reciprocal Compensation. The right contract with the right partner! Vehicle for accurate End User billing. Vehicle for correct PIU/PLU (percent interstate or local) percentages. Vehicle to track LNP (local number portability) dips. Vehicle to track and measure wireless network traffic. Vehicle to identify network traffic from all network types and/or sources. Maximizing SS7 & Next Generation Networks Network Monitoring Technology: Best of Breed What to look for: “The best and most precise SS7 probe systems are based on a hardware platform system designed for internal correlation of SS7 data.” On board intelligent program software with algorithms that process SS7 call data in real time in nano-second intervals. Non-Performance Impact on Switch or STP. Topology and methods that derive accurate reporting & billing information that are Carrier Grade and scalable. Analyzes every single call and transaction into a success or failure. Pre-Correlated & Bi-Directional CDRs Generated for all Complete & Incompleted Calls including SNM messages for network sanity. Maximizing SS7 & Next Generation Networks Network Monitoring Technology: Best of Breed What to look for: Multiple CDRs for Same Call or transaction (Different Needs: Billing, Network Ops, Fraud, Marketing, SS7 to AMA compare, etc...). High capacity processing (not just sampling or sniffing). No Mediation Devices Required. Ability to generate Standard file formats (CSV). Monitoring & Alarming of Probe Internals/Externals. Imbedded alarming and reporting to monitor the internals with direct feeds to back end applications. NEBS Compliant/Carrier Grade.
