CRNA Newsletter Summer 2014 - TMC School of Nurse Anesthesia
TMC School of Nurse Anesthesia Alumni Newsletter FROM THE DIRECTOR’S DESK by Sherry Pilsl, CRNA, DNP As most of you are aware, we have had a change in the leadership of the school. After almost 14 years as the school director, Mark Lipari has decided it’s time to get back to clinical. Mark has weathered the stress of the last 14 years pretty well, but not without some sleepless nights and a loss of hair! Thank you to Mark, for your leadership as a student advocate these past 14 years. The average CRNA serves as a program director for five years. Mark has certainly dedicated much of his professional life to assuring that the students we serve receive a top notch education. Anyone close to Mark knows how personally he took his position, and that was not without his share of headaches! The fact that we continue to graduate sought after providers is a credit to Mark’s dedication. As we begin a new chapter in the life of Truman Medical Center School of Nurse Anesthesia, please join me in welcoming Amber Davies, CRNA, DNP, Program Director and Kelli Pryor, CRNA, DNP, Assistant Program Director. Under their enthusiastic leadership there is no doubt that the transition of the school will be flawless. Both Amber and Kelli are working furiously as we approach accreditation this fall. There’s nothing like jumping right into the fire. We are fortunate to have such passionate leaders to usher us into the future! I’m Amber Davies, CRNA, DNP, graduate of the TMC SoNA Class of 2007. In 2010, I completed my doctorate of Nursing Practice degree at the University of Missouri Kansas City. I’ve been serving as your assistant director of education since May 2011 and I am grateful for this opportunity to lead the TMC School of Nurse Anesthesia. Let me also take this opportunity to introduce and congratulate our new Assistant Director of Education, Kelli Pryor, CRNA, MA/DNP (class of 2005). Keep us updated… Stay connected We’re always happy to hear how our alumni are doing. By updating us on your current education or career, we can better connect you with other alumni. We will also be able to invite you to our alumni events and keep you informed of the latest news at TMC School of Nurse Anesthesia. Share New Address/Contact Information Update your contact info so old friends and new network contacts can reach you. Help stop wasted postage and paper. Update your info by emailing us at [email protected] or call 816-404-1100. We have many exciting things underway: DNP transition, accreditation, change in leadership, and increasing CRNA awareness inside and outside the walls of the operating room. Foremost, we strive each day to foster competent and professional future CRNAs. Additionally, one of our initiatives this year has been to renew (or strengthen) relationships with YOUour esteemed alumni. Share Your Photos with the Alumni Gallery E-mail your Anesthesia related photos to [email protected]. Be sure to include details about when and where the photos were taken. Also, e-mail links to photos in your Facebook, Flickr and Picasa photo galleries. Here are some highlights from the past few months: TMC SoNA has its first AANA Health and Wellness Student Liaison, Lindsey Schroeder. In the spirit of wellness, Lindsey and fellow classmate, Kelly Dunn, led the entire anesthesia department in adopting a family through the Salvation Army for Christmas. It was inspiring to see the students’ involvement. In January, Lindsey led a group of SRNAs and CRNAs in the Children’s Therapeutic Learning Center’s Groundhog 5K/10K Run and in February, we de-stressed in the lounge by making Valentine’s Day cards for inpatient children at Children’s Mercy Hospital. Share Your Success Stories/Testimonials Had a great anesthesia experience? Recently married, engaged, promoted? Share your story with fellow TMC Alumni. E-mail us NOW!! [email protected] In January, we enjoyed celebrating National Nurse Anesthetists week. Public awareness was coordinated throughout the entire institution and the week concluded with our fourth Annual CRNA Week fundraiser at Quality Hill’s Club 1000 in Kansas City, MO. It was an eventful evening and included a silent auction, 50/50 raffle and sexy-leg contest (courtesy of select men within the department). The funds raised support student scholarships to medical missions and national professional association conferences. This year we presented three medical mission scholarships and two professional conference scholarships. The final medical mission recipient from 2013, Justin Lee, went to the Dominican Republic in January with Paul Gass, CRNA instructor. It is so wonderful that so many of our staff and alumni give back through medical missions; we’d love to highlight anyone from the TMC family that participates in medical missions. Drop us a line and we’ll post it in the next alumni newsletter! Finally, we have a new website. Check it out: http://crna.tmchost.com/. Warm wishes to each of you. I’ll see you October 11! Note: personal information other than your name will not be made public. CRNA Week Celebration and Fundraiser The date is set for next year’s National Nurse Anesthetists Week Fundraiser on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at Club 1000 in Kansas City, MO, at 6 p.m. Be sure to mark you calendars now, as it will be a great time to celebrate our profession. Something new… We would like to honor area CRNAs for outstanding service to our profession. Do you know of a CRNA that is retiring? Or a CRNA that has a remarkable story to share with other professionals? We would like to help honor CRNAs throughout the city that help promote our profession and further the success of our practice. Please don’t be shy…self-nominate yourself, or your coworker if they deserve recognition. Our January Fundraiser event would be the perfect venue. Being an alumni is not required….so please suggest this idea to all CRNA professionals. Contact Mary Elizabeth Monnig, CRNA for more details or to be included during the event as we celebrate CRNAs. [email protected] or 816-404-1100. Terry Piere, CRNA for more than 30 years, retires Terry Piere is leaving TMC after more than 30 years in healthcare. “As I retire it seems rather surreal something one thinks and talks about, but not really sure how to feel when it actually comes,” he said. “TMC has become a part of my family for the past 30 years. I won’t miss the occasional long days and difficult cases but I will miss the students and my fellow CRNA instructors.” “I have seen and learned so much at Truman over the years. I will never forget my experiences and friendships that I have made. I leave with a bit of sadness and excitement as I move into another phase of my life.” © 2014/Truman Medical Centers/#4229/HH/Anes Dept./7-2014
