Edisto Island offers a variety of locations that are
easily accessed year-round for bird watchers of all
skill levels. Whether birding from the front porch,

or in one of the many natural areas, visitors will be
rewarded throughout the summer and winter months
and during spring and fall migration. With multiple
public beach access points, viewing beach and surf
birds with binoculars, or a spotting scope, is easily
accomplished. Brown pelicans, ring-billed gulls,
herring gulls, laughing gulls, willets, sanderlings,

and ruddy turnstones are commonly observed.
Winter birding near the Pavilion will provide looks
at red-breasted mergansers, red-throated loons,
northern gannets with the occasional scoter and
scaup. Access points near Big Bay Creek are a
great place to see black skimmers, Forster’s terns,
marbled godwits, dunlin, plovers and dowitchers.
9. Northern Parula
Bay Creek Park and Edisto Beach State Park provide
access to saltmarsh habitats where great blue
herons, tri-colored herons, great egrets, snowy
egrets, swallows, marsh wrens, and clapper rails
can be observed. Forest and scrub habitats, which
occur in abundance along the Edisto Beach bike
trail and Edisto Beach State Park, are great places 10. Northern Pintail
to see painting buntings, blue-gray gnatcatchers,
vireos, warblers, and woodpeckers. The many golf
course ponds and the lagoons are good spots
for the American anhinga, black-crowned night
heron, green heron, hooded merganser, and belted
kingfisher. Birdwatchers should also plan a trip to

Botany Bay Wildlife Management Area. Only five
miles away from the beach, this 4,687 acre public
tract provides easy access to forest, field, marsh,
and beach habitats. In addition to what can be seen
on Edisto Beach, birds that can be viewed here
include bald eagle, osprey, wood stork, white ibis,
wild turkey, Wilson’s plover, buntings, sparrows,
and a variety of other shore and songbirds. Those 12. Osprey
planning a day trip from Edisto Beach should
also visit the ACE Basin National Wildlife Refuge,
Donnelley Wildlife Management Area, and Bear
Island Wildlife Management Area. These public
areas lie within the Ashepoo, Combahee, and Edisto
River watersheds (ACE Basin), a region renowned

Kosher Salt
Set oven to broil. Trim the ends off the asparagas and lay the stalks on a cookie sheet in a
single layer. Pour a small amount of the olive oil over them and roll them around until
they are lightly coated. Then sprinkle the lime juice and kosher salt over them. Place in
the oven and broil for 3-5 minutes depending on the thickness of the stalks.
Ann Carol's Southern Pecan Pie
1 9 inch deep dish pastry shell, thawed
3 eggs
2/3 cup sugar
1 cup dark corn syrup
1/3 cup melted margarine
1 cup pecans
Preheat oven to 350˚. Combine all ingredients, place in pastry shell and bake for 50-55
minutes or longer if necessary.
Crock Pot Rotel Chicken
3 boneless skinless chicken breasts
2 cans of Rotel tomates (with or without chiles, do not drain)
8 oz. cream cheese
noodles or rice (of your choice)
Place the chicken and Rotel into the crock pot. Set your crock pot to low and let cook for
about 4 – 6 hours, until chicken shreds apart with a fork. Shred all the chicken, add the
cream cheese and cook for another hour. If it looks too soupy add some more cream
cheese. Cook noodles or rice. Then serve the chicken over it.
Mimi's Quick Biscuits
2 cups Bisquick
1 cup sour cream
1 stick melted butter
Hand mix ingredients. Spray mini muffin pans with Pam. Bake at 350 for 10-15 minutes.

Banana Bread
1 3/4 cups of all purpose flour
1 1/4 teaspoons of baking powder
1 1/4 teaspoons of baking soda
3/4 teaspoon of salt
1/3 cup of shortening..solid not liquid
2/3 cup of white granulated sugar
2 eggs slightly beaten
1 cup of mashed bananas -- 2-3 bananas needed
Sift the flour and then add the baking soda, salt, baking powder and sift one more time
Cream the shortening; add the sugar gradually and continue beating until light and fluffy
Add the eggs and mix until smooth
Add dry ingredients alternately with the mashed bananas stirring just enough to combine
thoroughly...Do Not Beat
Turn into a greased loaf pain about 9 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches
Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour or until a knife or toothpick comes out clean when inserted in
the center of the loaf

Homemade Fruit Snacks
1/3 cup 100% frozen fruit juice concentrate thawed (will not work with pineapple)
2-3 25 oz. envelopes unflavored gelatin (2 for softer fruit snacks and 3 for firmer ones)
molds or rubber ice cube trays
Pour the thawed juice into a small saucepan. Sprinkle the gelatin over the juice and let it
sit for a few minutes. Put the pan over medium heat and stir until all the gelatin is
completely dissolved. Pour the mixture into a measuring cup with a spout so you can
easily fill your molds. Fill the molds and allow to set at least 20 minutes. You can speed
up the process a bit by putting them in the refrigerator.

1 box/bag of your favorite chocolate chip cookies
Milk
Your favorite whipped topping
Pour the milk into a small bowl. Take your cookies and dip them in the milk one at at a
time and quickly (you don't want them soggy). Place them in a single layer in a big bowl
or container till they cover the bottom. Next place a layer of whip cream over the
cookies. Repeat these layers ending with a layer of whipped cream. Take the crumbs
from the cookie box/bag and sprinkle over the whipped cream. Refrigerate 10 minutes
and then dig in.

National Scenic Highway 174. The
non-developed road leads visitors

through the giant oaks, magnolias,
and palms.
On the south end of Edisto Beach you will find the beautiful Plantation Golf
Course which dates back to 1974 when Sam Snead and Bob Goalby played the
first round.

The new Plantation Course
is a par 70 layout measuring

fairways, plentiful lagoons, and
occasional ocean breeze.
The course is always
maintained in a player friendly
condition and is continually
applauded for its excellent
greens. The picturesque holes

the abundant wildlife. Several alligators call the course home as well as deer and a
variety of coastal birds.

Do not carry, guide or help sea turtle hatchlings to the ocean.
Do not shine any lights on the hatchling regardless of the color of the light.
Do not turn on your cell phone.
Do not take any pictures of the hatchlings; flash photography is harmful to
the hatchling.
Any disturbance to a sea turtle nest or emerging hatchlings is

Protected as private lands handed down through centuries by planters made
rich by Edisto’s slave laborers working its fertile ground, Civil War and
Reconstruction led to industrial tycoons discovering the natural treasures of
South Carolina’s Lowcountry. Plantation after plantation, bought for getaways
and recreation, evolved into the conservation ethic of “This is my land and
it shall be Forever Wild.” Those last words, “Forever Wild,” today appear
on bumper stickers provided by the S.C. Department of Natural Resources
(DNR), which oversees Botany Bay. Read about how this land came to be part

2 The Edisto Beach State Park
An oceanfront campground on a palmetto-lined beach famed for its shelling
is just one highlight of Edisto Beach State Park. The park also offers another
campground deep in the maritime forest full of live oaks and some of the
state’s tallest palmetto trees, as well as a row of comfortable cabins nestled in
the woods but with a front-row view of miles of pristine marshland. The park
also has an environmental education center, a “green” building full of exhibits
that highlight the natural history of Edisto Island and the surrounding ACE
Basin, one of the nation’s largest preserved estuaries.

Scenic Hwy 174 App is a self-guided tour along
the National Scenic Byway 174. “Since starting my
business in 2008, I’ve met so many people who are
annual visitors to Edisto. They love this island and
the community. The island also attracts first-timers
who feel that it’s love at first sight. I created the
App with both clients in mind” says Meg Hoyle, the
App’s creator and owner of Botany Bay Ecotours.

Murder on Edisto
Author C. Hope Clark met her husband on a federal investigation;
he being the agent and she the cooperating individual. Not long after,
she determined that her love of writing might blossom best in the
mystery genre, involving the intellectual twists and turns of novels
that kept her up late at night, and a career was born.
Hope has authored two series, The Carolina Slade Mysteries and
The Edisto Island Mysteries, all of which take place in South Carolina
settings, but she professes that Edisto is her favorite locale for
suspense. The history of Gone with the Wind type plantations, ghost
tales of heart-broken lovers, and the constant roll and call of the sea
beckon for stories. Moss draping from ancient oaks, white crested
egrets eying trespassers with suspicion, crab nets, surf fishing, and the
air so thick with humidity one could drink the air. It doesn’t take long
for such a setting to become part of one’s DNA. Using that
environment, Murder on Edisto fell into place and took on a
personality that readers seem to adore.
Hope grew up in the Lowcountry, and spent many moments on
Edisto Beach, a place she views as a second home and heaven on
earth. When her publisher asked for a second series, suggesting that
the setting be an entrancing one, Hope saw Edisto Island the only

knows no violence other than that of the Mother Nature variety

Murder on Edisto, Bell Bridge Books
Her husband is murdered by the Russian mob, Boston detective
Callie Jean Morgan suffers a mental break and relinquishes her badge

who’s turned the coastal paradise into a paranoid patch of sand where
nobody’s safe. But what will it cost her?

An explosion shot flames out of the roof. She pulled against the
officer. “John!”
Fire fighters labored to unravel more hoses. In the background, she
heard Jeb screaming for his father above all the sirens and people
hollering.
A deafening blast. The force hurled her and the cop backward across
the lawn. Air whooshed from her lungs as her back slammed into the
grass. She lay half-dazed, but pain still tore through her left forearm.
Two fire fighters lifted her and smothered her burning sleeve, careful
not to hit the jagged piece of half-embedded shrapnel that had ripped
open her arm.
She stared numb at the burning wreckage of her home as someone
fussed over her. No one could have survived that explosion. Then, as if
to confirm the terrible finality, she caught the reality of John’s death
in the sorrow of a fire fighter’s eyes, the slow shake of his head to his
partner. Their glances back at her.
Jeb beat his way through the throng and threw himself into her arms.
At first she didn’t hear his sobs, then her son’s deep wrenching cries
reverberated against her collarbone. She dug her fingers into his hair,
her injured arm around his trembling body.
“Shhh,” she said against Jeb’s shoulder. She couldn’t bring herself to
say everything would be all right. Nothing would ever be right again.
As she stroked his head, she squeezed her eyes shut, and her tears
leaked into his shirt. She could pray John was kidnapped, but her
heart told her it just wasn’t so.

Dianna Kilpatrick are photographers and owners of
Colorful Things Photography. Their business specializes
in family, wedding and portrait photography where
Steve is the photographer and Dianna is the image

much of their travel time is spent on landscape and
nature photography. Steve and Dianna's work can

Dianna is an artist and photographer,
utilizing her talents to edit images and
create beautiful custom albums and
coffee-table books. Although she enjoys
photography, her first love is painting. In
the off-season she focuses on adding to
her series of beach themed, hand-painted
Christmas ornaments. The series, entitled
Coastal Collection Ornaments, is in its 13th
year. Her ornaments are in demand by
collectors throughout the Carolinas.
