CenterPoint Energy Gas Transmission Company (CEGT), an indirect, wholly-owned interstate natural gas pipeline subsidiary of CenterPoint Energy, Inc. announced the start of a non-binding, three-week open season to gauge market interest in an additional expansion of its nearly 1.9 billion cubic feet per day, 42 inch Carthage to Perryville (Line CP) pipeline. This expansion would support growing volumes of gas produced from the Haynesville shale for delivery into the Perryville Hub and to Carthage area delivery points. “Growing demand and expressions of interest Indicate 67 on Reader Information Card 12 www.pipelinejobs.com | July 2010 due to prolific natural gas production volumes, as well as forecasts from the Haynesville area in north Louisiana and east Texas leads us to believe that there’s an opportunity to expand Line CP,” said Cy Zebot, senior vice president and chief commercial officer for CEGT. “Assuming adequate expressions of interest, we’re prepared to execute binding precedent agreements and seek necessary governmental authorizations to place expansion capacity into service as early as the fourth quarter of 2012.” Potential expansion of Line CP could provide incremental supplies access to the interstate pipelines serving the Midwest and Northeast by utilizing CEGT’s Perryville Hub(SM) services where there could be interconnectivity and direct access to new storage facilities being developed near the Perryville Hub and Delhi, La. The expansion could also provide incremental supplies access to markets in the Southeast, through the Southeast Supply Header. Additionally, CEGT will evaluate options for deliveries and interconnectivity of natural gas to Carthage, which will provide Haynesville shale producers access to Texas markets. The specific facilities required will be a function of the location and volume level commitment of potential supply sources. Final pricing determinations will be based on the facility costs, the level of firm commitments and the amount of interest indicated in accessing downstream interstate pipelines. UPDATE! The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approved the Open Season Plan filed by Denali - The Alaska Gas Pipeline, LLC. Denali will commence its open season on July 6th, 2010. “We are pleased that the FERC has approved our open season plan,” said Bud Fackrell, Denali President. “This approval confirms that Denali’s plan is complete and consistent with FERC requirements. We look forward to beginning our open season in July of this year.” The U.S. open season process is overseen by the FERC, and is an important milestone in the development of the pipeline project. During the open season, Denali will PROPOSED PROJECTS & UPDATES be soliciting multi‐year, multi‐billion dollar financial commitments from its potential customers. These commitments are essential to a successful project, and indicate the level of market interest in Alaska’s North Slope natural gas. The Denali Project consists of a gas treatment plant (GTP) on the Alaska North Slope, transmission lines from the Prudhoe Bay and Point Thomson fields to the GTP, and a mainline that will cross Alaska and traverse through Yukon Territory and British Columbia to its terminus at Blueberry Hill in western Alberta. Also included will be delivery points along the route to help meet natural gas demand in Alaska and Canada. Denali’s cost estimate for the GTP and mainline is $35 billion dollars (2009 U.S. dollars). Denali Canada – The Alaska Gas Pipeline (West), Inc. will hold a contemporaneous open season for the Canadian portion of the mainline. The Canadian open season will be subject to review by the National Energy Board (NEB). Both the U.S. and Canadian open seasons are expected to end on October 4th, 2010. “We have invested over 670,000 man‐hours and $140 million dollars to develop a high quality cost estimate and execution plan. I believe our technical work and our commercial offer provide the best opportunity for potential customers to evaluate the competitiveness of Alaska North Slope natural gas,” said Fackrell. Denali ‐ The Alaska Gas Pipeline LLC and Denali Canada – The Alaska Gas Pipeline (West), Inc. are directly or beneficially owned by subsidiaries of BP and ConocoPhillips. NEW! EQT Corporation and DCP Midstream Partners, LP and its sponsor, DCP Midstream, LLC (together, DCP), announced they have signed a letter of intent to create a natural gas processing and related natural gas liquid (NGL) infrastructure joint venture to serve EQT and third party producers in the Marcellus and Huron shale areas of the Appalachian basin, two of the country’s most active shale plays. Under the letter of intent, EQT and DCP would pursue gas processing and related NGL infrastructure opportunities in the Marcellus and Huron shale areas through the joint venture. The joint venture will be the preferred processor for EQT’s wet gas in the Marcellus and Huron shale areas. EQT has an industry leading exploration and production position in the Appalachian basin with over three million acres of firmly held acreage, an industry leading cost structure and a rapidly growing natural gas production profile. EQT recently announced plans to spend approximately $900 million in 2010 to drill wells in the basin, including approximately 100 horizontal Marcellus shale wells and approximately 275 horizontal Huron/Berea shale wells. DCP has an industry Indicate 41 on Reader Information Card July 2010 | www.pipelinejobs.com 13 Serving the Pipeline Industry for over 20 Years ENGlobal Inspection Services Construction Management and Inspection Services provided for: • New Pipelines • Pipeline Integrity • Compressor and Pump Stations • Pipe and Coating Mills • Tanks • Terminals • Maintenance and Rehabilitation Projects Randy Byers Sr. Vice President/ General Manager Freddie McDonald Vice President Michael Frye Business Manager P.O. We are excited to be working with an experienced partner in EQT and believe the joint venture would facilitate additional investment opportunities to meet the rapidly growing needs of EQT and other producers, for processing capacity and NGL infrastructure in the basin,” said Tom O’Connor, chairman of DCP Midstream Partners, LP and chairman, president and chief executive officer of DCP Midstream, LLC. “This joint venture accomplishes three key objectives for EQT: it ensures the transportation and sale of EQT’s liquids through the addition of a highly capable partner; it reduces the amount of incremental EQT capital required for the investments in midstream projects necessary to support our growing volumes of produced natural gas; and it allows EQT to retain a financial stake, at least over the near term, in the profitable processing of EQT’s liquids-rich natural gas,” said David L. Porges, president and chief executive officer of EQT Corporation. As contemplated by the letter of intent, each of DCP and EQT Norman, OK (405)253-3700 (405)364-5433 would initially own a 50 percent interest in the joint venture. DCP would contribute approximately $200 million in cash in exchange for its 50 percent interest in the joint venture and would operate the new joint venture. EQT would contribute an equivalent value in existing assets consisting of its 170 million cubic feet per day (Mcf/d) natural gas processing plant and related NGL pipeline located in Southeast Kentucky serving EQT’s Huron shale production in exchange for its 50 percent interest in the new joint venture. The joint venture would use the cash from DCP to fund the initial expansion of the facilities to accommodate EQT and third party production growth in the Marcellus and Huron shale. Closing, which is expected to occur in the third quarter of 2010, is subject to finalizing definitive documentation for the joint venture and receipt of customary approvals, including board approval from each of the parties. It involves the looping of approximately 127 miles of 30-inch pipeline in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and the addition of approximately 55,000 horsepower with the installation of two new compressor stations and upgrades at seven existing compressor stations. NEW! Energy Transfer Partners, L.P. announced the construction of a 63-mile natural gas pipeline that will provide its customers additional transportation, gathering, and treating services in the rapidly expanding Haynesville Shale in East Texas. The pipeline project, which will originate in southeast Shelby County, Texas, traverse San Augustine County and terminate in Nacogdoches County, Texas, will consist of predominately 20- and 24-inch pipe and will have an initial capacity of 645 million cubic feet per day. The pipeline is supported by natural gas production from multiple 10-year agreements that encompass approximately 264,000 acres in the East Texas area. The pipeline will interconnect with two interstate pipelines in addition to the Partnership’s Houston Pipeline System, which provides producers the optionality to access numerous other interstate and intrastate markets including the Carthage, Waha, Katy and Houston Ship Channel hubs in Texas. Partial service is expected to begin on the pipeline in the third quarter of this year and the full in-service date is expected to be in the fourth quarter 2010. “This project shows our continued emphasis on developing organic growth projects and providing producers unparalleled access to markets throughout the country,” said Energy Transfer Partners’ Tim Dahlstrom, Senior Vice-President. “Our partnership is excited about this new opportunity to expand our pipeline network into a rapidly growing area of James Lime, Bossier and Haynesville production.” UPDATE! Energy Transfer Partners, L.P. announced that construction has begun on the approximately 175-mile Tiger Pipeline, an interstate natural gas pipeline to serve the Haynesville Shale and Bossier Sands producing regions in Louisiana and East Texas. The State Line infrastructure includes the Battlefield treating facility in southern DeSoto Parish, Louisiana that has the capacity to treat up to 180 MMcf/d of natural gas. As part of the expansion initiative, a new pipeline is being constructed that will have the capacity to deliver up to 250 MMcf/d of natural gas from the Battlefield treating facility to the 42-inch diameter Gulf South Pipeline at the Kingston Station in DeSoto Parish. Due to volume growth and demand for treating services, Enterprise is expanding its Battlefield and Keatchie treating facilities to add two amine units, each with a circulation rate of 700 gallons per minute. The units would provide up to 350 MMcf/d of incremental treating capacity to the system. These expansions are expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2010. “We are very pleased with our progress in contracting the Haynesville Extension pipeline,” said Michael A. Creel, president and chief executive officer of Enterprise. “With producers’ success in developing the Haynesville and Bossier Shale plays, the expanding footprint of the play, and based on current discussions and negotiations with producers, we are on track to quickly have the Haynesville Extension fully contracted.” “We are also excited about the expansion of the State Line system. It will provide producers in southern DeSoto Parish with an immediate, interim pipeline solution to enable them to commence production and generate revenues from newly drilled wells,” continued Creel. NEW! Kinder Morgan Energy Partners, L.P. launched a 30-day non-binding open season to further gauge shipper interest for its Marcellus Lateral Project, which would enable the company to offer a new service for moving natural gas liquids (NGL) from the Marcellus Shale Basin to fractionation plants and petrochemical facilities near Sarnia, Ontario. The NGLs would be transported via approximately 230 miles of new pipeline and KMP’s existing Cochin pipeline system. Subject to regulatory approvals and necessary capital investments, Marcellus NGL shipments could begin as soon as mid-2012. Given appropriate levels of shipper support, Kinder Morgan could move over 150,000 barrels per day (bpd) at a rate as low as nine cents per gallon. “We have developed our proposal based on discussions with Marcellus producers and gas processors and believe that Kinder Morgan offers the quickest and most efficient solution for the delivery of NGLs to the premium Ontario market,” said Don Lindley, vice president of business development for KMP’s Products Pipeline group. “We also anticipate, at some point in time, reversing a section of Cochin to offer service to Chicago area refiners, fractionation plants and Indicate 75 on Reader Information Card July 2010 | www.pipelinejobs.com 21 PROPOSED PROJECTS & UPDATES petrochemical facilities.” Cochin is a multi-product pipeline consisting of approximately 1,900 miles of 12-inch pipeline operating between Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Windsor, Ontario. Cochin traverses three provinces in Canada and seven states in the United States, transporting propane, butane and natural gas liquids to the midwestern United States and eastern Canadian petrochemical and fuel markets. The pipeline includes 31 pump stations spaced at 60mile intervals and five U.S. propane terminals. Underground storage, owned by third parties and KMP, is available at Fort Saskatchewan and Windsor. NEW! MarkWest Liberty Midstream & Resources, LLC, a partnership between MarkWest Energy Partners, L.P. and The Energy & Minerals Group, and Sunoco Logistics Partners L.P. announced a combined pipeline and marine project for ethane produced in the Marcellus Shale Basin. The Mariner Project is anticipated to have initial capacity to transport up to 50,000 barrels per day of ethane to Gulf Coast markets as soon as the second quarter of 2012 and could be scaled to transport higher volumes to support additional ethane production in the Marcellus region. MarkWest Liberty has been working with key producers and petrochemical consumers since late 2009 and the project is supported by key produc- ers including Range Resources Corporation and Chesapeake Energy Corporation. The Mariner Project includes MarkWest Liberty making minor modifications to its processing facilities to recover sufficient ethane to allow the residue gas to meet interstate gas pipeline specifications and installing additional facilities at its Houston, Pennsylvania processing and fractionation complex to separate the ethane for delivery to downstream Mariner Project facilities. MarkWest Liberty will also construct a 45-mile pipeline from the Houston complex to an interconnection with an existing Sunoco Logistics pipeline at Delmont, Pennsylvania. The ethane will be transported to an existing East Coast facility where Sunoco Logistics will construct refrigerated ethane storage facilities. The ethane will then be transported via marine vessel to premium markets in the Gulf Coast. In addition, the existing Sunoco Logistics pipeline crosses many of the large pipelines transporting natural gas into the northeast, which will provide multiple ethane blending options. “We are excited to be able to participate in the Mariner Project and we are especially pleased to partner with MarkWest Liberty due to their extensive experience in the Marcellus Shale Basin,” said Deborah M. Fretz, President and Chief Executive Officer of Sunoco Logistics. “Our existing Pennsylvania active and idle pipeline infrastructure is well-positioned to provide Looking to rent vehicles and equipment for your next job? Semple, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of MarkWest stated, “We have been working with Sunoco Logistics and our producer customers for a number of months and we believe the Mariner Project provides the most efficient solution to maximize the value of Marcellus ethane, supports the development of more than 2 BCF per day of Marcellus rich gas, and significantly accelerates the in-service date to transport ethane compared to other pipeline projects. MarkWest and The Energy & Minerals Group are very pleased to partner with Sunoco Logistics because of their strong set of assets and significant experience in the storage and transportation of liquefied petroleum gas.” UPDATE! The 3090 offers more than just a comfortable ride: this unit was developed with the help of some of Bandit’s best track chipper owners, along with input from Bandit’s service and engineering staff. The company that received the first unit ordered two more units within the first 30 days, commenting that this was by far the best land clearing whole tree chipper ever produced. They insisted upon remaining anonymous, so that their competitors would not gain an advantage by purchasing a Bandit Model 3090T for themselves. For the logger, this high capacity chipper is a must-have for those workings in wet and steep logging conditions. Because of the ease in positioning and moving the chipper at the landing, the 3090 will fill a 30-ton chip trailer in less than 15 minutes. The 30” x 30” chipper opening is fronted by Bandit’s diagonal dual top feed wheel system, allowing it to process the toughest whole trees with limited trimming. Engineering at Pipeline Inspection Company states that, because there are few connections and no belt, the SPY Model 670 is very convenient for small jobs. For large surface areas, the Model 670 can be easily modified by simply changing out the electrode to a roller or wide sponge. By simply grounding it and wetting the electrode, inspectors can inspect any paint, epoxy and coating. The roller sponge electrode option streamlines inspections on large flat surface areas. Multiple rollers can be used to cover wide flat surface areas. For contoured surfaces and tight space inspections, the roller can be quickly replaced with a flat sponge electrode. Holidays on coatings as thin as one mil can be detected with high accuracy and without harm to the coating. One standard 9-volt battery powers these highly accurate detectors for hours. When a holiday is found, an electrical path is completed activating a signal light and horn. Water is used as a conductor on sponges for coatings ranging from 1 to 10 mils. Non-foaming wetting agents are recommended for coatings ranging from 11 to 20 mils. For more details visit www.picltd.com. Kevin and his wife, Ashley are expecting a baby on August 30th. Congratulations Kevin and Ashley! The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has issued their annual hurricane forecast, which is very similar to the forecast already released by AccuWeather.com Chief Meteorologist and Hurricane Forecaster Joe Bastardi in February. NOAA forecasts an “active to extremely active” year, while Bastardi said 2010 could be a “top ten year” in terms of storm frequency and strength, adding that the Atlantic basin looks “textbook” for a major season. “2010 will be above average,” Bastardi said, “and worst case scenario, it may be in the top 5 to 10 percent as far as impact to land areas in the western hemisphere.” NOAA predicts a 70 percent chance of 14-23 named storms. Bastardi narrows this range by projecting a total of 16-18 named storms, with 15 reaching the western Atlantic and at least six storms impacting the United States coastline, with a worst-case scenario of up to 10. NOAA states that the probability on the season reaching the higher end of the range will depend on whether or not a La Nina, or a cooling of the waters of the Tropical Pacific develops this summer. Mitchell HEARD ON THE LINE Petroleum Engineering Legend Honored in Amsterdam for Impact on Energy with Shale Gas Revolution Houston oilman George P. Mitchell has been awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Gas Technology Institute. The founder of Mitchell Energy & Development Corp., Mitchell received the prestigious honor for pioneering hydraulic fracturing and drilling technologies that created a shale gas revolution. Mitchell was given the award at the “Global Unconventional Gas 2010: Unlocking Your Potential” conference as energy professionals from around the world met in Amsterdam June 16, 2010. of gas, enabling a sustainable affordable energy source that provides new choices on how natural gas resources are used. Mitchell is an inspiration to all those who are building on his legacy to make the unconventional conventional. “I’m truly honored to be receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Gas Technology Institute. I believe that the United States should examine all forms of natural gas in order to ease our dependence on coal and foreign oil,” said George P. Mitchell. “It is my hope that my efforts will aid the search for new and unconventional energy sources that can be used by my grandchildren and great-grandchildren.” For 17 years, visionary Mitchell insisted the impossible was possible. A petroleum engineer with geology training from Texas A&M University, Mitchell believed natural gas could be extracted from shale when no one else did. Not wanting his oil wells to go to waste in the event of flow shortages, Mitchell had his employees drill into an area known as the Barnett Shale for hydrocarbons. Despite the cautioning of his engineers that the endeavor could prove futile, Mitchell gave the order to fracture the rock. The company invested more than 30 wells to test different processes of hydraulic fracturing, with some wells’ production barely even covering the cost of operation. Yet Mitchell remained steadfast, continuing to analyze test results that yielded the greatest return, and eventually completed the first successful instance of using hydraulic fracturing to drill into shale for natural gas. The results were staggering—many experts believe the Barnett Shale may be the largest onshore natural gas field in the United States, containing more than an estimated 26 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. In recent years, advances in drilling technology have made it possible for energy companies to extract large amounts of natural gas from the Barnett Shale. Devon Energy Corporation acquired Mitchell Energy & Development Corp. in 2002 and added the innovation of horizontal drilling to make shale gas wells even more productive. The two techniques have subsequently revolutionized the unconventional shale gas play. What started with Mitchell’s vision and passion for unconventional development has spread to application to other gas shales throughout North America and Europe. Embracing unconventional gas opportunities has transformed the U.S. energy picture. This is a great website ladies. If you haven’t had the chance to log on, please visit them at http://pipelinegrapevine.bravehost.com There are many things to read on the site and some great recipes. You can also keep up with your friends who are on other spreads. Hello Ladies, Work is finally beginning to kick off in different places. Many of you have already made it to the job or about to head to one. It seems like it has been a long time waiting since work last year. But, I think this is the typical life of pipelining. We have had a few extra exceptional years where there has been so much work that you could work twelve months out of a year if you chose to. Now, I believe we are back on the normal track of working pipeline - home most winters and working in the summer. I called my mother saying something to the effect of - you know you’re a redneck when you go to move your house with your truck and get it stuck in a huge pile of sewage. I was near tears when my husband who tries to be the comic relief steps on the gas and proceeds to throw sewage everywhere. I have learned to laugh now at everything. We have had so many fun experiences that my husband and I will look at each other when something like that happens and say, “We’re pipelinin’ now baby!” In this month’s column, I wanted to share a few “Best and the Worst” stories that have been shared by members of the “Pipeline Grapevine” message board: We were going to Bakersville, Caliornia. Just outside of Needles, there is a HUGE mountain you have to go up. Guess where his rig got too hot? That’s right, going up that mountain and not far from the bottom!! So here we sit on the side of a mountain, he with his dually welding rig and my daughter and I in a Ford Bronco. Now, guess what happened next? Yep, he hooks my Bronco to the front of the dually and I proceed to pull he and the RV up the mountain. After that, our daughter decided she wanted to ride in the big truck! OK, most everyone has been on the road long enough to have some stories! Years ago, we pulled into Thief River Falls, MN with dirt bikes on the back of the truck (pulling a bumper pull RV). We had enjoyed them all summer in Michigan. People in the RV park looked at us kind of funny, but being young, I didn’t think much about it - other than we were pipeliners who moved around and they were wondering about us. We had been there a week or so and decided to ride the bikes for a little fun. We rode around for about an hour and then went home. The next day, one of the people from the park commented that they were surprised to see us out riding the dirt bikes. We had been riding out on the frozen Thief River in the dead of winter! I guess that is why they had been looking at us so funny! It was great fun until the first blizzard hit and that was the end of the bikes for the winter. We lucked up and met an engineer that worked for Arctic Cat. All that winter, we had the use of a snowmobile and I must say it was more fun than the dirt bikes! It just goes to show, you can have fun where ever you live and with whatever you have. Also, you can meet good people where ever you go. We were on a pipeline job for Welded in 2007 and were staying at a small trailer park just outside of Moberly. We were one of two fifth wheels there, the rest were mobile homes. There was a sewage leak that was running out of the ground right in front of our trailer. It was a leak in the main line, so all of the sewage for the entire park was coming out in front of us. We notified the park owners about it. After about four days with it going unfixed my hubby decided we would just move. So rather than hook up to his welding truck he hooked up our Travel Supreme (which weighs 19,600 lbs empty) to my 3/4 ton Chevy. It pulls our fifth wheel fine but add the weight of it onto the back of my short wheel base truck right on top of ground saturated with raw sewage, well, I will let you do the math. This was the first job I went with him on. So about a week and a half into my new life as a pipeliner’s wife. 44 www.pipelinejobs.com | July 2010 When I was a girl we were moving our 10 x 50 trailer to New York from Houston. My Mom was pulling the boat behind Dad pulling our trailer. We got caught in an awful blizzard. The trailer hitch broke on the boat and it came off. Hours later when we could finally pull over, my Mom didn’t even realize we had lost boat. Dad had to unhook the trailer, leave us in a motel and back track to find the boat. He was not in great mood when he returned. There are so many pipeline stories to share. I am sure there are some of you who have seen and read the books, Heard It On The Pipeline, Volume I and Volume II. These were published by my father, Ike Stemmer. For many years I have wanted to publish a book of lady pipeline stories. To publish this book I will need 200 – 300 stories. If you have a story to share, please email it to me at [email protected]. Please include any photos that you may also have related to your story. If we can gather enough stories and get this book published, this would be a great keepsake memory for your children and grandchildren. Don’t forget, send photos of your family and your activities so we can share them in this column. Have a fantastic summer!
