Ki-lympics wins Gold for Club
Over 50 members and guests attended the Ki-lympics
fundraiser on July 21st at the Depot at Five Parks. The
evening was full of fun activities while raising nearly
$2,000 to help fund AJK-supported charities.

Arvada Beer Company and Primo Vino, both located in
Olde Town Arvada, provided a sampling of beer and
various wines while guests enjoyed food prepared by club
members.
A drawing for various donated items including a weekend
at a mountain home, certificate for 3 credit course at Red
Rocks Community College, restaurant gift cards, 60minute massage, and more brought in over $300 as
guests increased their odds of winning with the purchase
of additional tickets.
Team Captain Joel Folk with team members Jan Folk,
Steve Close, Clark Morrell and Duane Youse entertained
the crowd with their rousing rendition of Olympic Rings
Routine. The audience expressed their support as the
Synchronized Ring-Leaders received their gold medals.

Away
On June 22nd, Rocky
Mountain District Kiwanis
and Arvada Jefferson
Kiwanis club lost a true
friend of all things Kiwanis.
Fred Paige, a long time
member of our club, was
also a Distinguished Past
Governor. Fred’s commitment and dedication will
be truly missed.
Additionally,
Former AJK member, Jay
Myers, husband of current
club member, Beth Myers,
recently passed away from
brain cancer. In lieu of
flowers, Beth requests donations to the Food Banks’
Backpack Program.

Kiwanis Conventions Update
New Orleans, LA
Alamosa, CO
Dick Feuerborn attended the Kiwanis International convention in New Orleans in late June.
Dick, along with in-coming club
Secretary, Brad Rupert, traveled to
Alamosa for the RMD Kiwanis annual
convention in August.
The “hot topic” was the
proposed increase in
international dues. It
was referred back to
the KI finance committee for further
review.

The Board recently announced the beneficiaries of this year’s fundraising efforts - the melodrama and the Ki-lympics event.
$300—Angels Unaware: provides support and
programs to help meet the nutritional needs of qualifying
residents of Arvada and surrounding communities for
emergency food
program and the only community-service club for
adults living with disabilities
$277—Lucky 7: a District supported program that
$500—Ralston House: provides a friendly and safe
supports Circle K Clubs at the District and International level and minimizes the out of pocket dues for
college students participating in Circle K. Our Gold
Level Banner Patch recognizes our club as a supporter of this program
$1,500—AWRSAY (Arvada Wheat Ridge Service Ambassadors for Youth): program that recognizes youth who have overcome a major obstacle or adversity by providing recognition, programs and in the case
of seniors, scholarships to Red Rocks Community College
$250—Cystic Fibrosis Foundation—Colorado
Chapter: is dedicated to finding a cure for cystic fibrosis.
Don Wick, with group of friends, started the Ride For 65
Roses seven years ago to raise money to fund the continuing research needs.
$250—Second Wind Fund of Metro Denver:
mission is to decrease the incidence of teen suicide by
removing financial and social barriers to treatment for
at-risk youth.

$500—Kiwanis International Foundation
$250—Arvada Community Food Bank: provides
place for children and teens who have been sexually
abused to tell their stories and begin to heal

$300—Aktion Club: a Kiwanis-sponsored
encouragement for children living with or affected by HIV/
AIDs through connecting families with each other
We’re on the Web
Both Dick and Brad attended leadership training. Other sessions
covered risk management and
fundraising ideas. One topic was the
issue of background checks on all
Kiwanis members. There has been a
lot discussion about this but no
decision has been made at the
district, division or club level.

KIWANIS
The Key Clubs at Arvada High School,
Standley Lake High School, and Jefferson
Academy will all receive support from our
club as well.

make the Arvada Harvest
Festival a success again
this year. A special kudos
goes to Renee who
played such a critical role
in the success of the festival.
§ Brad Rupert will soon
be looking for volunteers
to help with the Habitat
for Humanity pumpkin
patch. Pumpkins are being delivered midOctober.
§ Duane Whisler invites
club members to recommend students who have
overcome adversity to
AWRSAY for consideration of a scholarship.
The 1st Annual Tom
Leeper Memorial Golf
Outing was held Sept. 5th
at Ute Creek Golf Course
in Longmont. 25 Kiwanian's and guests played.
Steve Close had low score
of 75. Kelly Posiviata’s
115 was low score for the
women.

The golf group is planning on planting a tree at
Indian Tree Golf Course
in Tom's memory. The
tree will cost $300. An
envelope will be sent
around for donations next
Wednesday.

Installation Dinner
The annual installation dinner
will be held on Saturday,
September 29th at DiCicco’s
(5660 “Olde” Wadsworth
Blvd.) starting at 6:30 pm.
Cost of the dinner is $27.00
per person. Please pay by
check.

“Being good
Food Bank Backpack
Program
The Backpack Program is
already back in swing this
school year at Thomson
Elementary. Volunteers are
always needed on Thursday
mornings starting at 8 am.
Sorting, packing, and delivering the food to the classrooms takes less than an
hour.
Donations are also needed to
support the program. Beth
Myers has also requested
that in lieu of flowers for
Jay’s memorial service, donations should be made to the
Backpack program.

Swanson Elementary
Reading Program
“The most important skill
you can teach a child is to
read” - Roy Knight
AJK members have started
back at Swanson Elementary
reading to young students. Roy
recently asked for more volunteers to meet the requests
from teachers for this valuable
adjunct to their classroom
teaching. The commitment is
one hour per week.
