You are having behavior or other issues with your dog or cat Never strike or hit/abuse an animal out of anger for bad behavior; this does nothing to fix the problem, makes matters worse, and constitutes cruelty. Before you consider giving up on the companion who loves you and relies on you for their lifelong care, try to understand the behavior from their perspective. Unlike humans, pets do not act out maliciously to annoy or hurt their guardians. They have simple motivations that sometimes collide with what is important to humans. Many times, there are actions you can take to help modify the behavior. You might need to make some simple changes or do a little detective work to get to the bottom of the issue, or you may have to compromise with imperfection to a certain extent when all is said and done. The biggest problem is that most people are not very well-versed in how to deal with behavioral issues, and animal behavior is not taught to us. Please seek the help of a behaviorist/trainer for a detailed plan of action. There are many free behavior resources available online or via the free national telephone behavior help lines listed in the previous section. A local pet help line is available via the Humane Society of Southern New Mexico as well; call them at 575-523-8020. Or, if you can afford to do so, hire a professional local trainer. They are all listed earlier in this guide. There are also national behavior help lines listed in the guide. You encounter a loose dog or are approached by a dog you don’t know (bite prevention) Because we are not taught about dog behavior nor language, we don’t often see the bite warning signs, nor do we act in a safe way around unfamiliar dogs to deter a bite/attack or reduce the severity if attacked. To help prevent children, especially, from being bitten by dogs, teach the following basic safety tips: • Do not approach an unfamiliar dog. • Avoid direct eye contact with a dog. • Do not run from a dog or scream. • Remain motionless (e.g., “be still like a tree”) when approached by an unfamiliar dog. • If knocked over by a dog, roll into a ball and lie still (e.g., “be still like a log”). • Do not play with a dog unless supervised by an adult. • Immediately report stray dogs or dogs displaying unusual behavior to an adult. • Do not disturb a dog that is sleeping, eating, or caring for puppies. • Do not pet a dog without allowing it to see and sniff you first. • If bitten, immediately report the bite to an adult. 50 Doña Ana County / Las Cruces Animal Resources Guide What To Do If... You find a dog or cat Hold onto the animal for as long as you can to look for the owner; assume the animal is lost, not a stray. Caring humans assume the worst and fill in blanks with negative stories, but the truth is the cat or dog may have an owner who loves and misses him/her. No matter the condition you find the animal in and even if they are acting skittish/scared, it could be that the animal has been lost for a while or has traveled a long distance, and it is not necessarily a reflection of a bad owner. Many animals also have these skittish characteristics outside of their comfort zones. Look for ID tags or see if a dog “leads” you to his/her home. If not, immediately fill out a “Found” report at the local animal shelter and check their “LOST” reports; if possible, take a picture to place with the report at the shelter. Have the animal scanned for a microchip at a vet’s office or the shelter as well. Additionally, free classified ads are offered by most newspapers for lost and found animals, so call the Las Cruces Sun-News (541-5400), The Bulletin (524-8061), and American Classifieds (527-3463) to ask them to run a free ad; American Classifieds will post it also at www.dogcruces.com. Also check the LOST reports online at www.hssnm.org and www.actionprogramsforanimals.org, and report your lost pet to both organizations. Put up a few big, bright posters at key locations where the dog was found, preferably on poles near stop signs or traffic lights (though local ordinances may prohibit this). An alternative is to use your car’s back windshield for this signage with washable window markers you can get at Wal-Mart, Hobby Lobby, etc. The poster should be readable from the street by passing cars, but you can also paste a detailed flyer to it if you wish and post those around the area you found the animal, too. Sample words for the big poster are as follows: FOUND DOG Black Lab Mix 555-5555 If the owner does not claim the lost animal, consider trying to find the dog or cat a new home yourself if you can hold onto and care for the animal in the meantime. See the “What to do if … you need to find a new home for your dog or cat” section for advice on re-homing animals. If at all possible, please hold onto the animal until the owner or new home can be found because our municipal shelter is already overburdened as it is. Doña Ana County / Las Cruces Animal Resources Guide 51 What To Do If... You lose a dog or cat Start searching for your lost pet immediately in your home (to make sure they are not hiding) and in your neighborhood. Ask family members and neighbors questions about when they saw the pet last, etc. Depending on your dog or cat’s personality, they may be closer to home than you think. Indoor-only cats usually don’t travel too far but may be hiding and may not come out when you call, and gregarious dogs who love people will not travel as far as those weary of strangers. Create flyers and big posters to put up around your area (though local ordinances may prohibit this). An alternative is to use your car’s back windshield for this signage with washable window markers you can get at Wal-Mart, Hobby Lobby, etc. Big posters with basic information should be posted at stop signs and traffic lights or anywhere cars traveling in the area can read them from inside their cars. You can also create smaller, detailed flyers with the pet’s name, and offer a reward if you can afford it. Tape flyer copies to the bigger posters, post them all around your neighborhood, and use a message as follows on the bigger posters/your car windshield: LOST CAT Yellow Tabby REWARD 555-5555 Check your local shelter(s) daily (in person) for at least one week, and fill out a LOST report with them. Be persistent because some animals can hide a long time, be picked up by people, or travel far distances. It is a good idea to keep checking back at your shelter at least once a week for up to three or more months. Check the FOUND reports at the shelter, in all the newspaper classified ads, and on the online postings at www.hssnm.org, www.actionprogramsforanimals. org., and www.dogcruces.com; submit your lost reports to these online sources as well. Additionally, free classified ads are offered by most newspapers for lost and found animals, so call the Las Cruces Sun-News (5415400), The Bulletin (524-8061), and American Classifieds (527-3463) to ask them to run a free ad; American Classifieds will also post it at www.dogcruces. com. Also keep an eye out for flyers posted at vet offices and newspaper ads featuring adoptable pets. Check online pet adoption sites, such as www.petango.com, where your pet could end up being listed. Consider hiring a professionally-trained pet detective. A Missing Animal Response technician is available in our area. That contact information is as follows: Renee Waskiewicz • 575-312-1741 • [email protected] For more information and great online tips on lost pets and missing pet behavior, visit the Missing Pet Partnership online at www.missingpetpartnership.org 52 Doña Ana County / Las Cruces Animal Resources Guide What To Do If... You need to find a new home for your dog or cat If you can’t keep your pet for whatever reason, the last thing you should do is relinquish the pet to a shelter. The sad reality is that our shelter still puts down more than 60% of the animals it takes in, and if you can find a more appropriate home or other option for the dog or cat, that would be worth your WE NEED time and effort. Cats are especially at risk because the kill rate at our shelter for them is more than 80%. NEW ask your friends, family, and co-workers if they HOMES! knowInstead, anyone who might want your pet or be a better lifestyle match for them. Create a flyer for your pet, and post it throughout your community where there are boards that allow you to do so (vet offices, pet businesses, public offices, coffee houses, etc.). Send the flyer to all your contacts via e-mail, asking for them to forward it on to their contacts. Post flyers to target your intended audience. For example, if you are looking for a home for an active dog, post the flyer where active people shop and carry out their activities. Lastly, run ads in your newspapers’ classified sections for the pet as well. Call all local rescues, sanctuaries, and animal-welfare non-profits or some of those in the state of NM to see if they might accept your pet or offer re-homing assistance. All these references are listed in this guide. Give it some time, and try to find an appropriate match for your pet. It is not a good idea to simply give the animal to anyone who comes along. Interview and talk to the person to ensure your pet is going into a good home. You think your pet ingested something toxic or got bit by a rattlesnake Contact the ASPCA’s National Poison Control Center, 1-888-426-4435, for advice. Seek immediate medical attention for your pet at your veterinarian office or the emergency vet clinic if after hours or on a holiday. Some toxic human food and beverage items to keep from pets include the following: • Alcoholic beverages • Substances containing caffeine, such as coffee • Chocolate • Fatty foods, especially drippings and grease from cooking • Chicken and turkey bones • Grapes and raisins • Onions • Macadamia nuts • Salt and sugar • Yeast dough • All medications (aspirin is especially harmful to cats) Many other things in or around your home can cause serious illness or even death in your pet. Here are some examples: • Antifreeze • Bait for rodents • Batteries (they can contain corrosive fluid) • Car care products, such as cleaners or oils • Fertilizer • Household cleaners • Ice-melting products • Nicotine products • Pesticides for insects • Plants that are toxic to pets • Pool or pond products • Poisonous snakes Doña Ana County / Las Cruces Animal Resources Guide 53 What To Do If... You want to add a new dog or cat to your family Consider rescuing a dog or cat from a local animal shelter or sanctuary instead of buying from pet stores or other sources. Studies show that of the 165 million pets in homes in the U.S. today, only 20% of those were adopted from shelters. Yet, our country’s shelters put about 5 million pets to death each year. In our area, check your local shelter first, the Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley. You can also search on the Internet at sites such as www.petango.com for a specific type of animal. Check online postings for animals needing rescue or homes at www.safehavenanimalsanctuary.net, www.hssnm.org, and www.actionprogramsforanimals.org. Make sure you pick an animal that fits your lifestyle and family/home environment, and that could very well be an older, mellow dog versus a puppy. When you get your new furry family member home, remember that it takes time for them to settle in and time for existing family members to get to know the new pet. If you have existing pets, introduce the new member slowly and safely, such as introducing new dogs to pack members one-at-a-time and keeping the new member in a kennel the majority of the first week and not leaving the pets unsupervised at first. Just like people do, many animals need time to warm up to new members of the family, and issues you experience in the first days or weeks may subside or disappear later. Give the situation time and the new pet a real chance to become part of your family before exchanging or returning the animal to the agency from which you adopted. You want to adopt a pure breed dog These days, about 25% of the animals that end up in shelters are pure breeds, so check your local shelters and sanctuaries first. Then, if you can’t find the breed you are looking for there, look to a breed rescue instead of buying a dog from a pet store or off the Internet, etc. Many of these animals come from puppy mills, which are not only cruel but do not produce healthy animals. All of the NM breed rescues are listed in this guide, and you can also search for others on the Internet. Be sure to do your research on breed characteristics and needs before you adopt. Oftentimes, people pick a certain breed based on looks, popularity, or cute Hollywood films, but that’s not necessarily the right match for your lifestyle. You want to help a cat stuck in a tree or other high area Cats can easily get themselves stuck in a tree or on top of a light post, but then fear sets in and they can’t come down as easily. These days, AC departments and fire departments do not come out to rescue cats in this situation. Usually, if the cat made his/her way up, they can make their way down on their own. Some cats have been known to stay put for days, so the best thing to do is leave them alone instead of call to them and scare them more. If you do call to the cat, be sure the person doing so is the one who is the cat’s main caretaker. You can also place food at the base of the tree or pole to try to lure them down, preferably something aromatic like tuna or sardines. If the cat does not come down after a few days, try calling the local news outlets to see if media attention will get someone out to help bring the cat down. 54 Doña Ana County / Las Cruces Animal Resources Guide What To Do If...
