CLCB Newsletter Winter Highlights 2016
VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 NEWSLETTER: WINTER 2016 HIGHLIGHTS Community Living Campbellford/Brighton Recommended for Accreditation Community Living Campbellford/Brighton is very pleased to announce that we have been recommended for a four (4) year Accreditation through the Council on Quality and Leadership (CQL), a recognized international leader in defining and measuring quality of life for people with disabilities and those organizations who support them. Community Living Campbellford/Brighton has been accredited by CQL at the highest level possible since 2000. We were the first North American organization to be awarded a four-year accreditation in 2011 and we pride ourselves in a culture that fosters high performance. Although Accreditation is not yet mandatory in Ontario, Community Living Campbellford/Brighton chooses to have an independent body measure the quality of our support to continually enhance the services we provide. The Accreditation review conducted October 26-29, 2015 provided Community Living Campbellford/Brighton the opportunity to evaluate and assess supports provided through Person Centered Excellence® and the impact of these supports on the personal quality of life of the people receiving them. Accreditation also brought together employees, people receiving support and their families, volunteers, community supporters and board members for interactive dialogue, debate and action planning. Community Living Campbellford/Brighton concluded the four (4) day onsite review with an organizationwide plan, identification of resources, timeframe for implementation and measures of accomplishment. Executive Director, Nancy Brown extends her thanks and appreciation to everyone who took part in the Accreditation and contributed to its success. Proudly inspiring possibilities throughout Northumberland County for over 55 years!! NEWSLETTER - WINTER 2016 HIGHLIGHTS PAGE 4 Helping others is what it’s all about...the best of Christmas 2015 Santa Claus made two stops to mark the official Toy and Food Drive Kick-off event on November 3, 2015. A group of elementary students from Kent Public School joined him at the Campbellford Community Resource Centre bearing their unwrapped gifts and non-perishable food items to drop in the Jolly One’s sleigh. Before heading back to class, they were treated to hot chocolate and cookies provided by the Trent Hills Fire Department. After wishing everyone a Merry Christmas, Santa headed to Hillcrest Public School where Mayor Hector Macmillan dropped the ceremonial “first toy” into Santa’s sleigh. Students of all ages were more than happy to add their gifts and food items. Afterwards, they too enjoyed hot chocolate and cookies with Santa. All of these students are learning at a very early age that Christmas is about giving and their participation also helps to reinforce the need for helping others in their community. Community Living Campbellford/Brighton and the Municipality of Trent Hills Fire Department joined forces in 2010 to conduct their Annual Toy and Food Drive and the results continue to speak for themselves with overwhelming support received from the community. Also partnering in this initiative are Ontario Power Generation, Campbellford Veterinary Services and Campbellford District High School Youth Council. Boxes were in place throughout the community for people to drop their toy and food drive donations off until December 11, 2015. The number of families that this joint initiative helps continues to grow year after year and 2015 proved no different with a record number of 70 families being helped. Key to this year’s success was the 3rd Annual Motorcycle Toy Ride held in September 2015 organized by John McEvoy, Murray Kirkland and The Trent Hills Fire Department during which the community again showed their tremendous support by donating toys and financial contributions along the route. Thank you for the donations, Campbellford Lion’s Club! Santa’s sleigh is full and ready for pick-up! NEWSLETTER - WINTER 2016 HIGHLIGHTS PAGE 6 “Community Living Fridays” was a win-win with the 2015 Salvation Army Christmas Kettle Campaign in Trent Hills! Community Living Campbellford/Brighton was extremely pleased to work in partnership with our local Salvation Army branch during this past Christmas season to help with their annual Christmas Kettle Campaign. Members of CLC/B, both employees and people supported, volunteered to man the Kettle for five (5) Fridays from November 20 through to December 18th from 10am to 4pm outside our front door at 65 Bridge Street East. In retrospect, this partnership could have easily been called “Feel Good Fridays” as it was an amazing opportunity for the organization and for each employee as citizens to give a little back to the wonderful communities of Trent Hills. In total, “Community Living Fridays” raised $1,758.20 with all monies raised in this campaign staying within Trent Hills. Many initiatives including, but not limited to Family Services, the lunch program, and Christmas Assistance will benefit - this Holiday Season alone, the Salvation Army helped over 260 families with Christmas hampers. Needless to say, Community Living Campbellford/Brighton looks forward to partnering with the Salvation Army again for the good of the greater community! Thank you for your support, Trent Hills!! Photo courtesy of “WATERSHED - Life in Northumberland, Prince Edward County and Quinte” Did you know that on any Sunday through January and February, the slopes at Brimacombe play host to skiers with various disabilities? Located at 4098 Ganaraska Road in Clarington, this family-sized ski hill welcomes a chapter of the Canadian Association of Disabled Skiing (also known as CADS). The group at Brimacombe calls themselves CADS-Durham. The club has a capacity for 35 students and about 75 volunteers with newcomers always welcomed to join. At Brimacombe, it’s a noncompetitive environment where the object is to learn a new skill and make new friends. Shown to the left are Jeff and his dad, Colin, an experienced CADS volunteer. Community Living Campbellford/Brighton Receives Support from RBC for 7th Annual Golf Tournament and Employee/Retiree Grants After entering a team in the 7th Annual Community Living Campbellford/Brighton Golf Tournament last July, RBC made a further donation in October of $1,000. Shown here accepting a cheque from Gabrielle Hess, Manager of the Warkworth, Hastings and Norwood branches is John Mood, President, Board of Directors, Community Living Campbellford/Brighton. Since 1999, the RBC has made over 29,000 grants and donated more than $14.5 million in celebration of their employee and retirees’ volunteer efforts. Community Living Campbellford/ Brighton remains appreciative of the grants received this past October through RBC retirees Elizabeth Park and Marlene Mood totaling $1,000.00. More recently, a cheque in the amount of $500.00 was presented by Board Member Stacey Dello, an RBC employee, in the amount of $500.00. These donations were directed towards Community Living Campbellford/ Brighton’s Outcome Sponsorship Fund…a fund which provides people with an intellectual disability the financial assistance to achieve their personal outcomes and realize their life goals and dreams. For some people, reaching their goals is sometimes unachievable due to lack of resources.
