Rarely a week goes by without a popular event being held. 24 25 WHERE WE COME FROM… The advantages Al Akhawayn offers you today – interfaith tolerance, an international focus, and liberal arts methodology – are the same principles the university was founded on in 1993. Created as a joint program between the kingdoms of Saudi Arabia and Morocco, from its inception Al Akhawayn was designed to facilitate an intercultural exchange of ideas in a university based on the North American liberal arts model of higher education. 2009 1995 King Hassan II of Morocco and then Crown Prince Abdallah of Saudi Arabia, representing King Fahd, inaugurate 1999 First class of 172 students graduates from the university. Al Akhawayn University. 1993 Royal decree establishing Al Akhawayn is published in the Official Gazette. 26 2000 Total enrollment reaches 1,000 students. The Executive Education Center opens in Ifrane. 2004 H. M. King Mohammed VI visits campus and bequeaths his name to the university library. The Intensive English language program of the Language Center becomes the first such program in Africa to earn accreditation from the Commission on English Language Education. Today, Al Akhawayn stays true to its roots in order to provide you the same modern, world-renowned, and successful education that we have been offering for over 20 years. 2010 The Bachelor of Business Administration degree earns EPAS accreditation. 2011 OUR LEADERSHIP SINCE 1995 2013 The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science degree earns accreditation from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Total student enrollment surpasses 2,000. Driss Ouaouicha President since 2009 1999 Hillary Clinton delivers graduation keynote address and opens the Hillary Rodham Clinton Center for Women Empowerment. 2002 The Azrou Center for Community Development opens. The Executive Education Center opens second branch in Casablanca. 2005 The Community Service Program begins, requiring all undergraduates to complete 60 hours of community service before graduation. 2010 The first female dean at Al Akhawayn is appointed in the School of Business Administration. 2011 Astronaut Buzz Aldrin gives the keynote address at commencement. 2012 Al Akhawayn earns candidacy status for accreditation through the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. 2017 March 2017 Last visit by review team from NEASC. WORK STUDY In addition to scholarships and financial aid, Al Akhawayn University also offers its students a work study program to help them pay for school.
