When our family came to Hull in 1984, it appeared on the surface to be a very monocultural, mono-ethnic city, especially to someone like me who had worked in places like London and Bradford, so it has been wonderful over the years to watch and be part of a wonderful transformation. One of the areas which has helped in this process has been changes in the law regarding racism, homophobia, women’s issues and the elderly and Hull Pride, Hull Pride Guide, © 2011 Pride Events Ltd ...one and all, to this the 10th Hull Pride. I can’t believe it really has been 10 years since that first, fairly modest start in Queens Gardens. The fact we are still going strong is testimony to all who have supported it over the years. Thank you! Is there still a need for events like this? I say, YES! For every single individual who has ever felt like they were the only one in the world, this is an opportunity to celebrate the fact you were born this way! This is the first time we have worked independently to make this wonderfully important celebration happen thus allowing the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans community and their families and friends to be together. We have had to make some changes in the way Hull Pride happens. We have some amazing opportunities now and have increased our capacity and ability to entertain, help and celebrate with more people than ever before. Thank you to our sponsors who have helped us to get this incredible party shoehorned into Hull’s West Park. It truly is the best line-up of acts we have ever had and we have some super surprises and a finale like nothing before. Amongst our well wishers we can boast the Lord Mayor of Hull, Councillor Colin Inglis who has also agreed to fly an 8ft rainbow flag from the Guildhall and a slightly smaller one on his official car! This will be something as Humberside Fire & Rescue are all the many hate issues, some of which we know still need further work. In the very early days of Cornerhouse, when the ‘Safer Sex Campaign’ was a very pressing issue, the local gay community led the way for change and those involved in health caught up. Hull is now a very much more liberated city, we are welcoming refugees and asylum seekers from some of the very trouble torn, dangerous areas of the world. In 1984, the main group seeking asylum was from Chile with their wonderful music, most of the early Chilean residents have doing the same as last year from all the Hull Stations. The BBC’s Mrs Brown from “Mrs Brown’s Boys” has also sent us a message which we will play during Pride and you can access it via www.hullpride.co.uk We have lots of entertainment for you this year both on and off the main stage and we are so excited about the big 4: Nicki French, Kelly Llorena, The Reason 4 and of course The Vengaboys! The Pride Bar is our’s this year so please go exchange your cash for pride money and enjoy a beverage or two but please drink responsibly as we want to see as many of you as possible at the Official Afterparty! KC: the C’s for Community. We want to inspire young people. Get them interested in, and excited about, the future. And encourage them to do the best they can. We’re putting local people first. This isn’t just another company ‘giving back’. We’re from here. We live and work here. And we want our people to get involved in local activities and projects that matter to everyone in the area. For more information please contact KC’s Community Relations Manager Anna Millar on 01482 602831 or email [email protected] Thank you to all the businesses who have once again advertised in this Guide, to all the venues displaying our posters and making the 2011 silicone wristbands available and of course thanks to the many volunteers and performers that give their time for free. Please visit all the stalls and organisations that support us and have the most wonderful time ever! If you didn’t come this wouldn’t happen, so thank you. marketing & design Marketing & Design Centre Be safe and enjoy! Andy Train Director, Hull Pride 2011 now returned home. Members of the Kurdish community perform exciting rhythmic dancing. Recently, refugees who have formed the Choir for Hope performed at the Gig in the Gardens. They also offer a rape crisis service for male and female victims of sexual violence. They are committed to promoting the prevention of sexual abuse and have a range of highly specialised services to assist and help survivors through their healing process. They believe that a trauma such as rape and or childhood sexual abuse can have short and long lasting effects and that there is no set time when survivors should be ‘over it.’ There is no maximum number of sessions. Their specialist counsellors can help you understand how this experience has affected you and how accessing therapy will enable you to cope with the changes and difficulties that can result from this experience. They cannot change what has happened to you but they can help you adapt to life afterwards. Their appointment times are flexible and they offer you a choice of either a male or female counsellor and they provide a welcoming and safe environment to deliver their gentle and affirmative style of therapy. They also provide counselling, support and practical advice for partners and other family members over the age of 16, who may be experiencing relationship difficulties or domestic violence. They provide further information, advice and links to other resources on their website at www.survivorshull.org.uk Survivors also offers a similar service in Grimsby in North East Lincolnshire. Survivors will soon operate from two separate locations in Hull but their main suite of counselling rooms will be housed in the city centre, two minutes walk from the local bus and train station – in the meantime, if you wish to make an appointment or need immediate support please don’t hesitate to call them on: 01482 226677 www.survivorshull.org.uk [email protected] 30 Years on – HIV & AIDS On 5 June 1981, five young ‘homosexual’ men in Los Angeles were reported to have Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia. These men were the first reported cases of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Ten days later, the first UK case of AIDS reported in a young man with haemophilia followed by further reports among homosexual men. In 1984, the virus that causes AIDS (known today as the human immunodeficiency virus – HIV) was identified and an antibody test was developed. Thirty years on, HIV & AIDS has had a devastating effect on many communities throughout the world. At the end of 2009 it was estimated that over 33 million people were infected with HIV. With over 15 million children orphaned as a result of their parents deaths. We have moved on from the ‘Tombstone’ campaigns of the 80’s, and with highly effective treatments for countries that support HI/AIDS drug treatments and therapies. Where it is widely available, treatment has transformed HIV infection from a fatal to a chronic, manageable infection. Today, people diagnosed and treated in the early phase of HIV infection can expect a normal life span with much fewer side effects compared to the earlier drug regimens. New infections reach an all time high However; this can lull some people into a false sense of security and there is anecdotal evidence of people believing that the treatments available equate to a ‘cure’. This is not the case, and the Health Protection Agency (HPA) has recently released figures for 2010 that show the number of new diagnosis in the UK as being 6750. This will bring the total number of people living with HIV to around the 115,000 mark. The HPA have also stated that the estimated number of new diagnosis in Men Who Have Sex with Men is 3080 – the highest ever number of new infections in this group. In Hull and the East Riding the number of people living with HIV is over 250 – which may not seem many, but if compared to the figure in 2001 of 45 this is a huge percentage increase. Play safe – be safe It is important that people still practice safer sex – not only to prevent HIV but other STI’s. It is important that if people think they may have been at risk then they should get tested as soon as possible. It is important that we continue to educate and raise awareness of HIV and it is equally important that we continue to support those living with HIV. World AIDS Day takes place on 1st December every year – the theme for this year has not yet been released – however; there will be a number of events taking place to raise awareness and to remember those who have died and celebrate those still living with HIV. The Reason4 The band launched in 1997 with their debut UK single “Up and Down” which charted at number four, beginning a string of six UK top five singles, including their massive number ones – “Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!” and “We’re Going to Ibiza” from their double platinum selling debut album – “The Party Album”! The group disbanded in 2001 following a hugely successful international career. However, in 2007 the group returned to the club scene in the UK, performing to sold-out crowds around the country. Rumours began to surface that the group were working on new material, those rumours were confirmed on their official website in the spring of 2010. Their comeback single, which is yet to be released in the UK is called “Rocket to Uranus” and features Dead or Alive icon Pete Burns and blogger Perez Hilton, who co-wrote the song, is sure to be a huge hit with the crowd on the day. Simon Cowell was so taken by their charismatic image and distinctive lyrical style, that he dubbed them, “One of my favourite groups this year”. When the boys merge their spectacular vocals with their jaw-dropping looks, it results in superstar quality. OK magazine said they, “were not quite prepared for the gorgeousness that is THE REASON4.” The Reason4 have already captivated their national audience, now, as they unveil their debut single and album, the band are guaranteed to bring a totally new, and much needed, dimension to male harmony bands.
