Congratulations to Hull Pride on celebrating its
tenth birthday and I am certain celebrate is the
right word. When our family came to Hull in 1984,
it appeared on the surface to be a very monocultural, mono-ethnic city, especially to someone
like me who had worked in places like London
and Bradford, so it has been wonderful over
the years to watch and be part of a wonderful
transformation.
One of the areas which has helped in this process
has been changes in the law regarding racism,
homophobia, women’s issues and the elderly and
Hull Pride, Hull Pride Guide, © 2011 Pride Events Ltd
...one and all, to this the 10th Hull
Pride. I can’t believe it really has
been 10 years since that first, fairly
modest start in Queens Gardens.
The fact we are still going strong
is testimony to all who have
supported it over the years. Thank
you! Is there still a need for events
like this? I say, YES! For every single
individual who has ever felt like they
were the only one in the world, this
is an opportunity to celebrate the
fact you were born this way! This
is the first time we have worked
independently to make this
wonderfully important celebration
happen thus allowing the Lesbian,
Gay, Bisexual and Trans community
and their families and friends to be
together. We have had to make
some changes in the way Hull Pride
happens. We have some amazing
opportunities now and have
increased our capacity and ability
to entertain, help and celebrate
with more people than ever before.
Thank you to our sponsors who have
helped us to get this incredible
party shoehorned into Hull’s West
Park. It truly is the best line-up of
acts we have ever had and we
have some super surprises and a
finale like nothing before. Amongst
our well wishers we can boast the
Lord Mayor of Hull, Councillor Colin
Inglis who has also agreed to fly an
8ft rainbow flag from the Guildhall
and a slightly smaller one on his
official car! This will be something
as Humberside Fire & Rescue are
all the many hate issues, some of which we know
still need further work. In the very early days of
Cornerhouse, when the ‘Safer Sex Campaign’ was
a very pressing issue, the local gay community
led the way for change and those involved in
health caught up.
Hull is now a very much more liberated city, we
are welcoming refugees and asylum seekers from
some of the very trouble torn, dangerous areas
of the world. In 1984, the main group seeking
asylum was from Chile with their wonderful
music, most of the early Chilean residents have
doing the same as last year from
all the Hull Stations. The BBC’s Mrs
Brown from “Mrs Brown’s Boys” has
also sent us a message which we
will play during Pride and you can
access it via www.hullpride.co.uk
We have lots of entertainment for
you this year both on and off the
main stage and we are so excited
about the big 4: Nicki French, Kelly
Llorena, The Reason 4 and of course
The Vengaboys!
The Pride Bar is our’s this year so
please go exchange your cash for
pride money and enjoy a beverage
or two but please drink responsibly
as we want to see as many of you
as possible at the Official Afterparty!
KC: the C’s for Community.
We want to inspire young people.
Get them interested in, and excited about, the future. And encourage them to do
the best they can.
We’re putting local people first.
This isn’t just another company ‘giving back’. We’re from here. We live and work
here. And we want our people to get involved in local activities and projects that
matter to everyone in the area.
For more information please contact KC’s Community Relations Manager
Anna Millar on 01482 602831 or email [email protected]
Thank you to all the businesses who
have once again advertised in this
Guide, to all the venues displaying
our posters and making the 2011
silicone wristbands available and
of course thanks to the many
volunteers and performers that give
their time for free.
Please visit all the stalls and
organisations that support us and
have the most wonderful time ever!
If you didn’t come this wouldn’t
happen, so thank you.

Rape and sexual trauma centre
Survivors (Hull & East Riding) is a rape and sexual trauma
centre which provides therapeutic counselling and support
to people affected by or living with the traumatic effects of
childhood sexual abuse and sexual exploitation. They also
offer a rape crisis service for male and female victims of sexual
violence. They are committed to promoting the prevention of
sexual abuse and have a range of highly specialised services to
assist and help survivors through their healing process.
They believe that a trauma such as rape and or childhood
sexual abuse can have short and long lasting effects and
that there is no set time when survivors should be ‘over it.’
There is no maximum number of sessions. Their specialist
counsellors can help you understand how this experience has
affected you and how accessing therapy will enable you to
cope with the changes and difficulties that can result from this
experience. They cannot change what has happened to you
but they can help you adapt to life afterwards.
Their appointment times are flexible and they offer you a
choice of either a male or female counsellor and they provide
a welcoming and safe environment to deliver their gentle and
affirmative style of therapy.
They also provide counselling, support and practical advice
for partners and other family members over the age of
16, who may be experiencing relationship difficulties or
domestic violence.
They provide further information, advice and links to other
resources on their website at www.survivorshull.org.uk
Survivors also offers a similar service in Grimsby in North
East Lincolnshire.
Survivors will soon operate from two separate locations
in Hull but their main suite of counselling rooms will be
housed in the city centre, two minutes walk from the local
bus and train station – in the meantime, if you wish to make
an appointment or need immediate support please don’t
hesitate to call them on:

30 Years on – HIV & AIDS
On 5 June 1981, five young ‘homosexual’
men in Los Angeles were reported to
have Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia.
These men were the first reported cases
of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome
(AIDS). Ten days later, the first UK case
of AIDS reported in a young man with
haemophilia followed by further reports
among homosexual men. In 1984, the
virus that causes AIDS (known today as
the human immunodeficiency virus –
HIV) was identified and an antibody test
was developed.
Thirty years on, HIV & AIDS has had a
devastating effect on many communities
throughout the world. At the end of 2009
it was estimated that over 33 million
people were infected with HIV. With over
15 million children orphaned as a result
of their parents deaths.
We have moved on from the ‘Tombstone’
campaigns of the 80’s, and with highly
effective treatments for countries that
support HI/AIDS drug treatments and
therapies. Where it is widely available,
treatment has transformed HIV infection
from a fatal to a chronic, manageable
infection. Today, people diagnosed
and treated in the early phase of HIV
infection can expect a normal life span
with much fewer side effects compared
to the earlier drug regimens.
New infections reach an all time high
However; this can lull some people into
a false sense of security and there is
anecdotal evidence of people believing
that the treatments available equate to a
‘cure’. This is not the case, and the Health
Protection Agency (HPA) has recently
released figures for 2010 that show
the number of new diagnosis in the UK
as being 6750. This will bring the total
number of people living with HIV to
around the 115,000 mark. The HPA have
also stated that the estimated number
of new diagnosis in Men Who Have Sex
with Men is 3080 – the highest ever
number of new infections in this group.
In Hull and the East Riding the number
of people living with HIV is over 250
– which may not seem many, but if
compared to the figure in 2001 of 45
this is a huge percentage increase.
Play safe – be safe
It is important that people still practice
safer sex – not only to prevent HIV but
other STI’s. It is important that if people
think they may have been at risk then
they should get tested as soon as possible.
It is important that we continue to
educate and raise awareness of HIV and it
is equally important that we continue to
support those living with HIV.
World AIDS Day takes place on 1st
December every year – the theme for
this year has not yet been released
– however; there will be a number of
events taking place to raise awareness
and to remember those who have died
and celebrate those still living with HIV.

The band launched in 1997 with their debut UK single “Up and
Down” which charted at number four, beginning a string of six
UK top five singles, including their massive number ones – “Boom!
Boom! Boom! Boom!” and “We’re Going to Ibiza” from their
double platinum selling debut album – “The Party Album”!
The group disbanded in 2001 following a hugely successful
international career. However, in 2007 the group returned to the
club scene in the UK, performing to sold-out crowds around the
country. Rumours began to surface that the group were working
on new material, those rumours were confirmed on their official
website in the spring of 2010.
Their comeback single, which is yet to be released in the UK is
called “Rocket to Uranus” and features Dead or Alive icon Pete
Burns and blogger Perez Hilton, who co-wrote the song, is sure to
be a huge hit with the crowd on the day.

As the band took to the stage during their X Factor audition, viewers
were quite literally blown away as the boys brought accapella
harmonies, intertwined with hints of barber-shop, bang up to date,
zooming the genre back into cool relevance. Simon Cowell was so
taken by their charismatic image and distinctive lyrical style, that he
dubbed them, “One of my favourite groups this year”.
When the boys merge their spectacular vocals with their jaw-dropping
looks, it results in superstar quality. OK magazine said they, “were
not quite prepared for the gorgeousness that is THE REASON4.” The
Reason4 have already captivated their national audience, now, as
they unveil their debut single and album, the band are guaranteed to
bring a totally new, and much needed, dimension to male harmony

Zara’s first stage appearance was at the age of three, since then competitions
have led her to become a champion in dance, competing at the famous Blackpool
Tower Ballroom, in the IDTA all England finals! In 2009 she won Blackpool’s biggest
talent contest, She sang at Hull’s Freedom Festival, alongside JLS, The Saturdays and
Chipmunk. Zara was asked to sing at this years Blackpool Pride, she is Hull’s version of
a Lady Gaga tribute, she is Lady Zaza! Amazing lighting, costumes, 4 stunning dancers
from the Hull dance troup, Fuse and amazing vocals and dance routines! the Lady
Zaza show is a show to remember !
Peter has become a real Hull Pride tradition and has always opened proceedings
with a song! He’s an international vocalist and performs throughout the region.
Peter and his partner, Carlton were stars of the BBC series, “Wedding Stories” and,
one of the first gay couples in Hull to have a civil partnership at the Guildhall.
Musical Express
The Mr Men
After wowing the crowds last year with their rendition of the Cell Block Tango,
Musical Express are back again. This time it’s Abba’s turn to get some Razzle Dazzle
and you will not be disappointed. With six of Abba’s greatest hits all rolled into one
Sooz, Rosie, Chrissy, Rachel, Gary and Nikki will have your feet tapping and your
booty shaking.
The Mr Men are a 5 piece Rock / Indie band from Hull who have been enjoying
their recent success after supporting Lee Ryan from Blue at the Brid Bash Launch
at the Bridlington Spa. Covering songs by The Killers, Kaiser Chiefs, Kings of Leon,
Stereophonics, Lenny Kravitz, Franz Ferdinand, Rage Against the Machine and
many more.
You may have seen frontman Russ performing at the Freedom Festival in 2009 where
he opened the Viking FM’s show forJLS, Taio Cruz and many more A list Stars.

Lucy Garter
Street fx
She’s loud, she’s rude and she’ll get you if you wander into The Star & Garter on a
Friday night. She loves slimming cake, twiglets and thinks wagon wheels have shrunk
over the years. She worries sheep and shepherds alike. Her favourite place is the
non-fiction section of Hull’s Central Library. Today she’s going to ‘learn’ you those
camp, joiny in songs that we do every year. Smile and wave, smile and wave!
Street fx are a local street dance act who are all based in and around the Hull
area. They formed whilst studying at Hull College on various dance courses. This up
and coming act choreographed by David Danville are hoping to put Hull on the
map for a contribution to modern dance!

Performers...
Roxanne
“Fun Time” for you to join in!
Roxanne Cooper is a Hull-born singer. After starting singing at the age of 14,
becoming a local favourite on the club scene, she entered the national tv program
Pop Idol, where she eventually placed 6th out of tens of thousands who entered.
After the success of the show, she took part in a national UK tour, performing at
venues including Manchester MEN and Wembley arena...
achieving all of this by only 17 years old! After the Pop Idol experience was over,
Roxanne concentrated on singing and eventually moved to London, and Malibu,
California, where she lived and worked with some of the worlds top producers.
Andy, Sooz and Simon / Lucy will be sending out the
mahoosive rainbow flag over the crowd, doing the “camp
dances” and perhaps this year getting a little help from
some very good friends.
Perry Pulman
Since being a Michael Jackson fan at the age of 4 Perry has never looked back
and is now pursuing his career carrying on the KING OF POP’S legacy, travelling
all around the UK to promote the man he looks most up to most. Perry is looking
forward to sharing his talent with the Hull Pride audience this year and thanks
everyone who supported him at Viking FMs Pride Starz - L.O.V.E
Miss Understood
The Miss Understood Pink Tribute Show has been running for approximately 2
years now and wow what a rollercoaster ride it has been for me!!! I’ve had some
amazing experiences, touring the UK with Mike Tyson and working on shows for
Roberto Duran, Thomas Hurns, Frank Bruno, Nigel Benn and many other boxers,
supporting Diversity on their Diversitoys Tour, not to mention performing at the
Lowry Theatre Manchester for the Ben Roe fundraiser, along with X Factor finalists
Andy Abraham, Bad Lashes and the cast of Hollyoaks.
I take pride in my work and love doing Charity work. I’ve supported Help for Heros,
Breast Cancer and many more. But up and coming things on the agenda include
working closely with T-Rex drummer Paul Fenton, and having the pleasure of rerecording Hot Love which was a big hit for T-Rex in the 70’s in aid of Yorkshire Air
Ambulance, in October I will be supporting Jason Manford in a charity event for
Childline at Batley Frontier.
Burlesque Style Performers
We are (some of) the Scarlett Belles and we represent Studio Boutique dance &
fitness studio. Whilst we are not professional dancers we always do our best to
entertain our audience, however big or small. We can’t wait to dress up and shake
our feather boa’s at Hull Pride this year!
You are invited to join in as this bit of the show is now
officially traditional.
Signing Ladies
Being an all inclusive event
is very important. Since Lizzie
and Karen became a regular
feature of our main stage their
talents have ensured that the
show is enjoyed by all. We are
pleased to welcome them back
as our resident signers
Kingdom
Girl power is back in the form of completely unique and unrivalled new girl band,
Kingdom! Charlotte, Jade, Leanne, Romy & Sophie are set to kick all the other up and
coming girl bands into touch with their attitude filled, no-nonsense live show fusing huge
vocal ability and energetic dance routines to some of the chart’s hottest tracks.
Kingdom have chosen to raise money for the Katie Piper Foundation with the release
of their single ‘Echo’ as they were touched by the story of Katie and want to help other
inspirational people who need the help and support of the charity.

Pole dancing is a fantastic way to get fit
and healthy; it changes not only your body
but the way you perceive your body. We
have women of all age’s shapes and sizes
who can do amazing things on a pole.
The Georgian Couple.
This larger than life aristocratic Lord and
Lady Pompous, straight out of the 18th
Century (c. 1760) are all dressed up to
the nines, with their fabulous sculptural
hair styles, powder faces and gorgeous
gowns. They are totally aghast at their
surroundings and lost in their own pompous
aristocratic world. They mostly bitch about
each other, but also relish the opportunity
to comment on other people. Nobody
escapes from their scathing remarks! You
will find them strolling around the park
entertaining the crowds as they go.
At Pole 4 Fitness we pride ourselves in
our ability to get the best from every
individual that trains with us, working in a
group you discover how you bounce off
each others enthusiasm, you motivate
each other and celebrate each stage
you complete together. Suddenly you
have a whole new group of friends who
are just as hooked as you!
Hustle
HUSTLE are an energetic, all-girl street
dance team, full of attitude and made
up of dancers between 13-15 years.
Performing locally for events and charities,
HUSTLE also compete nationally and
were recently awarded first place in the
‘National Street Dance Championships
2011’ and as well as winning trophies
in solo and duo competitions, HUSTLE
came home as the under 18 newcomer
champions. Emilee is also our Zumba
demonstrator on the day.

After substantial public consultation with members of the
local LGBT Community, the two Hull based organisations
known as LGBT Centre and GenderShift are to combine all
their services at the Centre on Portland Street, next to the
Star & Garter and the Yorkshireman pubs (near the back of
St Stephens Shopping Centre and Hull Truck Theatre). This
will happen over the next three months, making it the only
dedicated LGBT Resource Centre in the City, and the largest
centre in Yorkshire. It is to be run mainly by volunteers from
the Community and will be supported by a number of staff.
It is a space available for use by LGBT Groups and clubs for
meetings and socials. Social space. Training rooms, meeting
space, cyber cafe, wifi access, counselling rooms, community
kitchen and office space are all available, making it the perfect
place to access services, meet new friends, get some support
and get involved in your local LGBT Community. It is there
for you to use, and there are lots of opportunities to volunteer.
To find out more, just pop in to the centre at anytime and have
a chat with the staff.
