2012 annual report - The League for People with Disabilities
HERE FOR GOOD THE LEAGUE FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES Annual Report | 2012 FROM THE BOARD CHAIR & CEO DEAR FRIENDS, Here at The League, our mission is Independence. Through therapeutic programming, we nurture strengths to help our participants live their best life possible. Every day, we strive to help individuals focus on putting their abilities first. THE STORY OF OUR MISSION Founded in 1927 based on the progressive ideas of Isabelle Kann Frank, The League for People with Disabilities celebrates its 85th year of providing life changing therapies for people living with disabilities in our community. We strive to continue the pioneering spirit of our founder, to foster independence and ensure the best lives possible for all we serve. Today, The League offers a full continuum of therapeutic, vocational and rehabilitative services, which include: Medical Day, Day Habilitation, Vocational, Camping, Therapeutic Recreation, Wellness Center, League Industries and Autism Services. The League is a vast community of partners, volunteers, participants and staff that work together to ensure the pioneering mission of our founder is here for generations to come. The year 2012 was a year of milestones, marking the 75th summer at Camp Greentop as well as the 85th year of The League. To celebrate these tremendous milestones we unveiled a special fund raising initiative, The Fund for Camp, to ensure camping and respite programs are here today, tomorrow and for future generations. The Fund will also help enhance the year-round Recreation and Respite Program and develop staff dedicating their careers to working with our people with disabilities. Our Annual Awards and Advocacy Dinner, entitled “Milestones”, honored those who have made significant and lasting contributions in helping us reach these milestones. On the Anniversary of Camp’s 75th summer, we celebrated at Camp, inviting past and present campers, directors, counselors, volunteers, staff and supporters who shared stories, laughed a lot and reminisced about summers gone by. Thanks to our generous donors, we provided 38 camperships to send financially disadvantaged individuals to Camp Greentop and significantly supported the operating costs of the vital therapeutic recreation programs at The League. Annually, we serve over 2,000 individuals with disabilities including autism, brain injury, cerebral palsy and many other challenges. Our participants strive to achieve their highest level of independence and live productive lives. We invite you to see our mission at work. Whether you’re an old or new friend, we appreciate your interest in our organization and we hope you will want to learn more! We thank our community of volunteers, partners and friends who help make up The League for People with Disabilities; you ensure our mission of independence and quality of life is here for good. Thank you for a momentous 85th year and many more to come. Andrew Slutkin Chair Board of Directors 1 FRONT COVER: Annual Rotary Day, June 26, 2012 | ABOVE: Past and Present Camp Directors David A. Greenberg President & CEO 2 CHAMPIONS FOR GOOD Renee Gordon and Michael Hettleman Co-Chairs, Fund for Camp Throughout its 75 year history, Camp Greentop has provided life changing experiences for tens of thousands of individuals with disabilities. Board Member Renee Gordon knows first hand the therapeutic benefits that a program like camp provides. “I know that Camp Greentop transforms lives…the smile that lights up Alex’s face as we round the bend to Camp Greentop each summer says it all! That Alex, who has Autism and cannot speak, can express such happiness is truly a gift to me and my husband Barry.” Cara, the mother of another camper attests that when her son, who also has Autism, comes home from camp, “he has an easier time socializing with us, his family. He interacts more, he smiles more and just seems happier.” To celebrate Camp Greentop’s 75th milestone, The League’s Board of Directors launched an initiative to establish The Fund for Camp, that ensures recreational and respite programming like Camp Greentop is here today, tomorrow and for future generations. This past summer, thanks to the generous assistance of our donors, The League was able to provide 38 individuals the financial assistance needed to attend a camp session or assisted travel trip. “Camp Greentop stands today, not because of the efforts of one organization, but rather as a culmination of a tremendous wave of effort from many charitable individuals and civic organizations” says Michael Hettleman, dedicated volunteer for 45 years, member of the Board of Directors, and co-chair of the Fund for Camp. Though the 75th year has come to a close, the Fund for Camp continues, as a sustaining fund used to provide financial aid to our participants, support the Endowment for Camp Greentop, and to enhance the Therapeutic Recreation and Respite programs at The League. We would like to once again extend our most grateful thank you to our Fund for Camp donors, who have helped to ensure the friendship, fun and magic of Camp is and always will be… here for good! She was eager to take part in all of the life enriching activities The League has to offer, including Camp Greentop. Limited resources prevent some individuals from taking part in therapeutic recreational activities like Camp and Assisted Travel. The Fund for Camp ensures people like Jackie can participate in these programs through special funds called Camperships. Camperships help support campers who otherwise would be unable to attend camp and enjoy its fun and adventure for financial reasons. For someone like Jackie, who may be limited in terms of mobility, but not in spirit, the fun is endless! When asked what she liked most about camp, Jackie said “I forgot about my health problems, I had no worries or cares. I was with people like me. The League is the only place where people don’t make me feel different.” Perhaps the most powerful of her words were, “I never knew I could do that.” Jackie received assistance through the National Park Rangers Campership, funded in tribute to the Bush Family, that was established this year. Camp Greentop ensures that no camper is turned away because he or she cannot afford camp. In fact, approximately 75 percent of our campers receive financial support of some type to attend. She didn’t attend the following year, but came again in 1964, and has returned every year since. If you ask Judy what’s changed since her first summer at camp in 1962, she would say hairstyles and music, but not much else. Over the past 75 years, Camp Greentop, nestled in the majestic Catoctin Mountains, has preserved much of its rustic charm and tradition of the days of old. Many campers return to Greentop year after year, hoping 7 to reunite with old friends and staff of summers gone by. Judy quips, “My favorite things about camp are friendship, fresh air, and the pool.” We look forward to 2013, when Judy celebrates her 50th summer at Camp Greentop, and many more to come!
