Stitch and Flip Improvisation - San Diego Modern Quilt Guild
Stitch and Flip Improvisation Instructor: Jacquie Gering Email: [email protected] Website: www.tallgrassprairiestudio.blogspot.com Class Description: This class will focus on the improvisational stitch and flip triangle technique. Students will learn basic stitching and flipping as well as several stitch and flip variations. Students will learn how to manipulate the blocks to form many unique designs. Students can choose to make the Blind Co-Pilot quilt shown above or learn the technique and variations and create a unique stitch and flip triangle design. Multiple design options will be shared in class and the design possibilities are endless! Two sets of materials are listed, one for the Blind Co-pilot quilt and the other for a quilt of your own design. Materials: Sewing machine in good working order Neutral thread for piecing Basic sewing/rotary cutting/pressing/quilting supplies Cutting mat and 24" acrylic ruler (mat should be at least 24" to cut width of fabric) Pins Optional: Quilting Modern: Techniques and Projects for Improvisational Quilts Each student will need a personal design wall. Bring 1 yard of white flannel, a flannel backed tablecloth, or a portable design wall if design wall space is not available in the classroom. Project Options: Blind Co-pilot quilt (64" x 72") or Original Stitch and Flip design *For any improvisational class it is always better to have more fabric than not enough. The more variety you bring, the more flexibility you will have in your design. Copyright ©2013 Jacquie Gering, Tallgrass Prairie Studio, All Rights Reserved. Blind Co-Pilot Quilt Option #1 Fabrics: For a lap sized quilt top approximately 64" x 72" • Standard quilting, pressing and rotary cutting supplies • 4 ½ yards of background fabric • 2+ yards of scraps in a variety of colors and values (below is the color chart for the Blind Co-Pilot quilt with the specific scrap colors/amounts required for this quilt.) You can use this or bring scraps in colors in quantities that you would like to work with. Color Teal Dark Pink Medium Pink Light Pink Red Light Red Light Turquoise Dark Turquoise Yellow Orange Green Dark Purple Light Purple • • Quantity 10 8 20 24 22 4 12 14 16 40 32 16 4 Scraps should be a MINIMUM size of 2 ½" x 4" rectangles. I find larger scraps (4" x 4") or larger can be cut into 2 triangles and work the best for this technique. If you don't have scraps, as an alternative bring a set of fat eighths or cut 4" or wider strips from fabrics you have in your stash. Finishing Materials: • 5/8 yard of binding fabric • 4 yards of backing fabric • 73" x 80" piece of batting Design as You Go Quilt – Option #2 • 2 - 4 yards of background fabric. Background can be one solid, tone on tones, a set of low volume prints, or multiple solids. • ½ yard cuts of 2 to 4 coordinating solids (if you'd like to do the half square triangle version) • 2-gallon ziplock bag stuffed (and I mean stuffed!) with solid and print scraps. (the size of the scraps needed will depend on the size you choose to make your background squares.) The larger the background square, the larger the scrap Copyright ©2013 Jacquie Gering, Tallgrass Prairie Studio, All Rights Reserved. will need to be. As an alternative bring fat eighths or 1/8th yard cuts of as many print/solid fabrics as you can. Try to bring enough scraps so that you have many scraps of the same color so you have color options for your design. For example, 10–15 orange scraps, 10-15 red scraps etc. Option #3 Feel free to bring materials for any of the other stitch and flip projects that are in Quilting Modern. Size of Background Squares The Blind Co-pilot quilt uses 4 ½" background squares with 4" x 4" or larger scraps. If you use larger background squares you will need larger scraps for the stitch and flip triangles. I recommend 2 ½" to 4 ½" squares for your background squares. You can also use rectangles for a different look and new design options. If you'd like to cut background squares in advance, you may, but remember, once they are cut, it's more difficult to change your mind or move in a different direction. **The more fabric you bring the more flexibility you will have in your design. Backing, batting and binding will be determined later depending on the size of your quilt top. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at [email protected].
