They provide access to applications running elsewhere on a network and have a keyboard, mouse and user experience just like a PC. Thin clients can be used for a wide variety of tasks including word processing, email, data processing, voice and multi-media. They are available as desktop, mobile and all-in-one LCD integrated devices. Unlike a PC, thin clients do not run applications and store no data; they simply collect key strokes, mouse clicks or audio/video input from the user and display the application interface. Thin clients have major advantages over PCs and Terminals: a a 4 a a a a a Since applications are deployed centrally on a server, the whole IT infrastructure becomes far easier and less time consuming to manage. There is far less to manage or misconfigure on a thin client and their remote management software dramatically reduces IT support desktop visits. The total cost of desktop ownership is dramatically lower and IT budgets can typically be reduced by 25 % or more since less “fire fighting” is needed. Data is far more secure since it is centralized and backed-up, thus offering compliance with many data protection regulations. No moving parts and no local hard disk make thin clients resistant to viruses and very reliable. The average lifetime of a thin client can be up to eight years with dramatic return of investment (ROI). Organizational and IT change becomes much easier due to the speed and ease of rollout and deployment. Thin clients use much less energy than PCs and can cut CO2 emissions by up to 77 %, even if the additional server capacity and data center cooling is considered (Fraunhofer research paper). In some cases, energy savings can become an important ROI driver. Modern Requirements of Thin Clients Traditionally, thin clients have been used to connect to server-based Windows® applications running on Citrix® or Microsoft® using an architecture called Terminal Services. The server acted as an enormous “PC mainframe” that could share applications with many users concurrently. Today, there are far more ways to deliver applications than Terminal Services. A modern thin client should be able to deliver any server-based application, from old to new, and could include applications based on: a a a Mainframe Blade PCs Virtual PCs (VDI) a a a Web, Java Voice over IP Multi-media This ability to access any network application, regardless of how it is delivered, is at the core of our design philosophy and is why we call our range of thin clients the IGEL Universal Desktop series. 5 IGEL Thin Client Infrastructure Design Transmission Access Server Network Applications are stored and run on a server or central server farm Only screen contents, mouse and keyboard commands are transmitted through any type of network IGEL Universal Desktops and converted PCs and TCs IGEL offers a variety of hardware solutions, here you see the thin clients UD2, UD3, UD5 plus UD9 (all-in-one). Server-based Apps: Microsoft® Terminal Services Citrix XenApp Linux etc. Virtual Desktops: VMware View Citrix XenDesktop Microsoft® VDI-Suite etc. Web-based Apps: Internet Java etc. Direct Access to: VoIP SAP Multi-media etc. Examples for file formats: DOC XLS JPG PDF Management of hardware and session settings IGEL Universal Management Server and database (Windows and Linux) Left page: from above IGEL UD2, UD3 and UD5 (black) IGEL Universal Management Console (Java and Web) Thin client computing with virtual desktops – both standardized and flexible at the same time! Thin client computing with IGEL Universal Desktops and virtual desktop infrastructures (VDI) is an unbeatable combination; it’s flexible and efficient as well as secure and economical. You can have the right desktops available for your users at any location. What’s more, you can do all this without having to sacrifice the convenience and security of a centralized computing environment. VDI allows you to standardize your desktops with commonly used desktop pools or by desktop cloning. Beyond this, you can even provide high-performance workstations for knowledge workers or power users, such as those for use in R&D or in graphic, web and product design – including CAD applications, image editing and graphic-design layouts. In view of these new and powerful options, the IT-sector analysts at Gartner predict that the market share of virtual hosted desktops will grow to 40 % by 2013. 6 IGEL’s VDI Strategy: more freedom to configure things exactly the way you want them IGEL Universal Desktop thin clients closely follow the roadmaps established by leading providers of virtualization technology, such as VMware®, Citrix® and Microsoft®. Our core competency is provisioning these solutions in an economical and flexible manner that is both easily managed and secure. IGEL thin clients support numerous connection brokers such as VMware View™, Citrix XenDesktop™ as well as hypervisor-independent solutions like Leostream®, Quest Software® vWorkspace and Ericom® PowerTerm WebConnect, which are compatible with all commonly used hypervisors, including Citrix XenServer™, Microsoft® Hyper-V™ and VMware ESX Server™. IGEL supports VDI in all three thin client operating systems: IGEL Linux, Microsoft® Windows® Embedded Standard and Microsoft® Windows® CE. The Portfolio: IGEL Technology’s thin client hardware and software. Many functions – One device! Only the top 25 % of the market fulfill the criteria, ensuring the energy consumption is in accordance with the Energy Star 5.0 specifications. These specifications include: less than 15 Watt in idle mode and less than 2.7 Watt in Standby/sleep mode and Wake on LAN functionality. Also, power management is included in IGEL firmware for operating systems Windows® Embedded Standard and Linux. The UL / CUL mark of conformity is the most accepted proof that a product complies with the American and Canadian safety requirements. This represents the most recognized symbol for product safety. IGEL thin clients with the TÜV/GS mark of conformity are checked with regard to the safety-related requirements of the low-voltage guideline of RWTÜV. In addition, the GS mark of conformity certifies the high ergonomic requirements of all IGEL thin client products. 26 The “CE mark of conformity” stands for “Communauté Européenne” (European Community). IGEL Technology guarantees that the production of the IGEL thin clients complies with the “EMC” (electromagnetic compatibility) guidelines and that the low-voltage guideline applies to equipment safety. Within the framework of EMC testing, the CE mark guarantees that our products do not generate any electromagnetic interference and are adequately protected against external cross interference. The FCC mark of conformity confirms that an electronic device has been tested by the Federal Communications commission (USA) for compliance with admissible high frequencies. This mark is mandatory for electronic products that are sold in the USA. This affects all devices that are equipped with a microprocessor. Frequencies that are not shielded by means of an appropriate casing or other measures may cause faults in other equipment. There are two categories of FCC mark: • Class A: For equipment that will be used exclusively in an industrial and commercial environment. • Class B: For equipment that will also be used in residential areas. DE 79295479 According to this EU regulation, the “Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment” (WEEE) directive, the manufacturers are responsible for the redemption and disposal of their old equipment. As one of the first manufacturers IGEL offered immediate, cost-free (member states of the European Union only), and easy redemption service for thin clients purchased after 8/15/2005. With this, IGEL complies with the EU law for the disposal of old electronic equipment. The RoHS directive (Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances) requires companies to forgo the use of heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium, chromium and brominated flame retardants in the production of electronic or electric equipment. Every IGEL thin client in the UD2, UD3, UD5 and UD9 series is being produced according to the RoHS European Union directive. The European Union Regulation REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of Chemicals) shall improve the protection of human health and the environment from the risks that can be posed by chemicals. IGEL fulfils this regulation by informing customers and partners about materials on the Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) in our products in a concentration above 0.1 % weight by weight (w/w). IGEL Universal Desktops – The Green Alternative For organizations looking to reduce their carbon footprint, electronic waste and energy bills, thin clients have strong credentials when compared with PCs. The prestigious Fraunhofer Institute in Germany found that, even when the additional server electricity and data center air conditioning is factored in, thin clients can cut CO2 emissions by up to 77 % compared with an average desktop PC when using 64 bit Windows® Terminal Services (Citrix®) for server-based desktop hosting. These energy savings can offer a six year payback or less on electrical energy costs alone (US Department of Energy commercial electricity costs per KWh 2009 in the NE United States). In addition to reducing CO2 and energy, thin clients generate 66 % less electrical waste. We were one of the first thin client vendors world wide to ensure all our devices were WEEE and RoHS compliant. Every device bought in Europe can be recycled free of charge at end of life upon customer request.
