The Amphitheatre
of Nîmes is
the best preserved
amphitheatre of the
Roman era. Visit this
impressive monument
built in the 1st century
A.D. and relive the
circus games of
Antiquity in the
gladiators’ section.
The Maison Carrée
(Square House)
is the only perfectly
preserved Roman
temple in the world.
Don’t miss the 3D film
on the giant screen
inside. Discover from
the top of the Tour
Magne a thrilling view
over the city of Nîmes.
Three great
monuments in one
fascinating visit
to Antiquity!
Supervised by cultural specialists trained in Antiquity, the
children can immerse themselves in the fascinating world
of art of the gladiator, attend a real combat in the Arena
and try out the equipment:
• History of the gladiators: the children are immersed
in the first century A.D. through the presentation of the
world of the amphitheatre and the lives of gladiators in
Nemausus (the old Roman name for the city of Nîmes).
They discover how one became a gladiator, what different
tools and equipment gladiators used.
• Combat: the children watch a reconstruction of a gladiator
fight that’s larger than life!
• Gladiators’ equipment: the children discover how the
gladiators’ equipment was designed to prolonge combat,
protecting the fighters and making the fights as exciting
as possible. After this presentation, the children are invited
to touch and try on the different helmets and other types
of equipment: shields, breastplates, chain mail… (Groups
of fewer than 50 children).

This interactive workshop presents two types of emblematic
warriors: the Roman legionnaire under Julius Caesar and
the Gaulish warrior. The workshop has three parts:
• History and introduction: through a detailed
presentation of Roman legionnaires, the children discover
their equipment, their preparation for combat as well as
the military tactics used during an attack. For Gaulish
warriors, the children also discover their equipment, but
also their way of life and the types of combat developed
by these peoples.
• Comparison: after an explanation and a comparison
of the techniques of the Gaulish and Roman peoples, the
children attend a real life combat demonstration. Then,
the children are invited to touch and try on the different
helmets and other types of equipment: shields, breastplates, chain mail… (Groups of fewer than 50 children).
• Legionnaires’ training: the children enter into the
skin of a legionnaire and receive real training (Groups of
fewer than 50 children). A unique experience that is both
entertaining and educational!
