Message from Principal
I am very pleased to be providing this annual progress report to our school community.
The 2013-2014 school year was another excellent one at Clarenville High School. To this
end, I feel our school is a place of life-changing possibilities where we have the
opportunity every day to change the trajectory of our students’ lives. Our students
build successful relationships with their teachers and peers and these connections give
our Cougars the necessary foundation on which to build lives of good character,
intellectual curiosity, and kindness. We have a real sense of community here at
Clarenville High School that has allowed all students to thrive regardless of their
background and interests.
This past year, we made several key strides in completing our school development goals.
We have four years left to meet our goals and are very much enjoying the process. Our
key goals are:
1) To develop and employ academic interventions to support the 21st Century
learner.
2) To enhance learning through an inclusive environment.
3) To foster wellness and create a positive school environment where teachers,
parents, and students collaborate.
Our school is a wonderful place for staff and students. Each year when I reflect back on
how fortunate I am to be the Principal of a school like Clarenville High, I feel humbled.
Staff and students at CHS are second to none and our community stakeholders are very
supportive. To close, we hope you enjoy our annual school report. We enjoyed creating
it and are so proud to share it with our stakeholders. Go Cougars!

Message from School Council
Our School Council has had one meeting to date this year where we successfully got our
council up and running. We have decided to meet the first Monday of each month this
year. A big thanks to Rodney Short for his wonderful work as council chair over the past
four years, he will be missed. To date, we have reviewed achievement data, approved
fundraising endeavors for the year and were informed of key events coming up at CHS
this year.
To close, our school council is very much looking forward to our role at CHS this year.
Our goal will be to continue working with staff, students and parents to ensure we
maintain the positive culture of collaboration at CHS.

Key Highlights/Special Projects
In June of 2014, our school became World Champions when they won the MATE
International Robotics competition in Alpeana, Michigan. They finished first out of six
hundred teams! In addition, our senior choir attended the Stride Music Festival in New
York City and won gold medal status! They were also given the “Spirit of New York”
award for being the most spirited choir. Our Varsity Boys volleyball team won the 4A
provincials for the 3rd consecutive year, won the Dalhousie Classic in Halifax for the 2 nd
year in a row and attended Nationals in Edmonton. We raised over $20,000 for young
adults with cancer via the YACC Shave for the Brave event.
Our school holds two major student recognition events throughout the year. In
December we hold the CHS Scholarship Trust Foundation Awards presentation at the
Clarenville Events Center. In May we held our annual recognition night at the high
school and both events were successful.
CHS also offers a number of co-curricular opportunities to our students including:

Partnerships
CHS is blessed with excellent support from the business and service sector in the
Clarenville area. The CHS Scholarship Trust Foundation raised in excess of $18,000 this
past year and has holdings in excess of $75,000 in its investment fund. At our annual
Awards Presentation in December we presented over $16,500 to deserving graduates.
We are especially proud of this partnership as the Foundation’s focus is on recognizing
and rewarding as many deserving students as possible.
Each fall our Guidance department plans a Post Secondary Forum for our students. This
project is a partnership between the school and post secondary institutions and other
agencies such as the Canadian Forces and RCMP. The experience gained by our students
through this partnership is invaluable to them as they plan for their future after High
School.

Clarenville High School students do very well in public exams each year. Our teachers are providing high level instruction
and our students are rising to the challenge. The transition to the new Level 3 math program has resulted in an overall
average decrease but this was a common experience provincially. A more detailed analysis of this data follows in the section of
this report titled: “Analysis of the School’s Most Current Data”.

For a school our size, our ratio of advanced/academic/general is right on target. We offer a successful program in each
of these levels and students enjoy their program. Of particular note is our success at getting students through the
academic English program versus their peers across the province. Additionally, our participation in advanced
Mathematics is growing rapidly each year. Our students are experiencing academic growth through a challenging and
appropriate program of studies at CHS.

Graduation Status
Clarenville High School is doing a wonderful job graduating students in the appropriate program of studies. We have
a higher graduation rate than the province and the distribution of students across honours, academic and general
programs puts us well ahead of our peers provincially. We work really hard to place the students in the appropriate
program for them and set them up for success in post-secondary studies and life.

Analysis of the School’s Most Current Data
Public Exam results were excellent again this year for Clarenville High School. Our students scored above the province on all exams
and had an adjustment value of “0” in all courses. We successfully finished up the pilot program for World Geography 3218 this
past year. Our students tremendously enjoyed the 3218 course and did very well with it. Also, our English 3201 and Earth Systems
3209 students performed significantly higher than the province this past year and we are very proud of them for that. Again this
year, the shared evaluation marks in all courses indicated our belief that our students would outperform the province and their
teachers were correct. At CHS, we feel that our students are well prepared to write public exams and believe, going in, that they will
do well.
Through a detailed analysis of exam data, each department reviewed their results and the following courses outlined some key areas
in the data they would like to improve. These were as follows:
English 3201 – Prose and Poetry
Math 3200 – Trig Identities
Math 3201 – Exponential Functions & Logarithms
Biology 3201 - Nervous and the Endocrine System
French 3202 – Listening and Writing Skills
Chem 3202 – Electrochemistry
Physics 3204 – Horizontal & Vertical Components of Projectile Motion
Earth Systems – Rocks and Minerals
We also completed an exhaustive review of our internal data (general and academic courses) to see how we compared to the rest of
the province. These results were also very good and confirmed that we have a high standard of expectations, and student
achievement, in these courses also. Through following the objectives necessary to complete our school development goals, we hope
to achieve more success in the key areas identified in each course above.
Our data is clearly showing again this year that our students are meeting with success on provincial and internal assessments.
Through our work on our school development goals, we are creating an environment more conducive to 21st century learning
Clarenville High School Annual Report 2013-2014

directives as outlined by our school district. Our results are excellent and the atmosphere of learning is apparent at Clarenville High
School.
