Stinger herbicide. ™ Your economical first strike on blackberry. Solutions for the Growing World Your economical first strike on blackberry Stinger™ Herbicide is the new solution to large blackberry infestations. If you’re planning a serious war on woody weeds then Stinger Herbicide provides your economical, first strike. There’s less to retreat and better secondary weed control. % Visual Control blackberry 677–770 days after treatment (mean of 5 TRIALS in New South Wales) Visual % Visual% Regrowth Suppression Regrowth Control 70 6080 5070 Brush-Off ® 80 Stinger 69 Stinger provides: • Superior control of secondary weeds • Retention of grasses Stinger contains 375 g/kg aminopyralid and 300 g/kg metsulfuron-methyl. Aminopyralid selectively controls broadleaf weeds in grasses and works better to suppress regrowth of secondary weeds. • Faster brownout • Less to retreat 20 2040 10 30 0 20 677 – 700 DAA Mean of 8 Trials 10 0 Stinger was significantly superior in 4 out of 5 trials. 58 4060 3050 The aminopyralid in Stinger makes all the difference Stinger 20 g + BS1000 100 mL/100 L Fast Brown out Metsulfuron 10 g + BS1000 100 mL/100 L Using Stinger means you can see where you have treated within days. Trial 112001CP Blackberry Trt 2 41DAA Blackberry treated with Stinger, 41DAA Why Stinger Herbicide? 1. No more of the “year two metsulfuron regrowth blues”. Stinger is proven to reduce regrowth. 2. Get faster into productivity, Stinger Herbicide protects grasses and is tough on blackberry and other key woody weeds. Key benefits metsulfuron + glyphosate mixes Stinger Why? Works better on key weeds o o o o p p p p Includes aminopyralid - less regrowth to follow up in the second and third year Doesn’t kill grasses Much quicker brownout Control of more weeds including thistles Retains pasture competition and smothers invading secondary weeds like Paterson’s curse and thistles Easy identification of where you’ve treated Thistles are often the first to return when weeds are controlled Trial 112001CP Blackberry Trt 2 41DAA Blackberry treated with Brush-Off, 41DAA Tough on secondary weeds Visual % Regrowth Suppression Stinger vs metsulfuron regrowth control after two years (cost comparison over two sites) 60 50 40 30 20 70 60 50 69 Brush-Off ® Stinger Stinger (20 g/100 L) + wetter Brush-Off (10 g/100 L) + wetter 40 30 20 10 0 677 – 700 DAA Mean of 8 Trials 10 0 Initial cost ($) incl. time and labour Criteria Initial spray volume was 130 L per treatment over two sites. The graph at left shows the comparative treatment costs at two sites at Tenterfield and Wallabadah in New South Wales where an initial total spray volume of 130 L was used over the two sites. The initial cost was more expensive with Stinger when compared to metsulfuron. Stinger gave much faster brownout than metsulfuron and better control 24 months after application. When the bushes were retreated 24 months after initial application with Grazon Extra at 500 mL/100 L there was 3 times more regrowth from the metsulfuron treated bushes and 2 times more re-spray volume needed for the metsulfuron treated bushes. The respray cost was more expensive for the metsulfuron treatments ($11.50 vs $6.74). The total cost from start to finish was similar for both metsulfuron and Stinger treated bushes. Using Stinger means you get into productivity faster. Stinger provides: • Superior control of secondary weeds • Retention of grasses • Faster brownout • Less to retreat Area inside the broken line = treated with Stinger Area outside the broken line = treated with metsulfuron Trial details. Aerial trial sprayed in Orange NSW 11 May 2013 from a Bell Jet Ranger Helicopter using a 15 metre boom. Stinger 320 g/ha in 100 L water/ha + BS-1000 100 mL/100 L. Image taken 6 months after application. Secondary weed control Often the biggest failing of weed control programmes is the invasion of secondary weeds. Removal of the primary weed often results in another weed filling the vacated space. Seedbeds under the controlled weed often harbour the seeds of thistles and other invasive weeds just waiting for the opportunity. In this trial conducted in Orange, NSW activity on St John’s wort was observed. There is no registration on St John’s wort and further trials will be undertaken to understand rate and timing needed. Follow-up applications over at least two seasons will be required for complete control. Water volumes of 500 to 800 L/ha are recommended to minimise the risk of damage to native vegetation. Spray after full frond expansion. Spray to thoroughly wet all foliage but not to cause run-off. Spray to thoroughly wet all foliage but not to cause run-off. Extra care should be taken to get good spray penetration when spraying bushes situated in thickets. Best results obtained on younger plants. Quarter fill the spray tank, maintaining agitation, then: 2. Add STINGER (as described below left). 3. Add water to half fill the spray tank. 4. Add wettable powders, water dispersible granules or suspension concentrates. Grazing for milk production: DO NOT graze for 3 days after application. 5. Add emulsifiable concentrates. Cutting for animal feed: DO NOT cut for 56 days after application. 6. Add the surfactant when spray tank is half full. General mixing instructions Stinger Herbicide is a water dispersible granule to be mixed with water. STINGER should be added to the spray tank with simultaneous agitation. If ability to agitate the spray tank is limited, premix the STINGER in a bucket before adding to the main tank. Once diluted correctly, STINGER remains dispersed. The material must be kept in suspension at all times by continuous agitation. Thoroughly re-agitate if left standing When prepared spray solution has been allowed to stand, thoroughly re-agitate before using. In tank mixes STINGER must be in suspension before adding the partner product or surfactant. Before Treatment AFTER Treatment 7. Add water to bring to the final spray volume. Use of Surfactant/Wetting Agent Only BS1000® Biodegradable surfactant, Chemwet 1000 Wetting Agent, Uptake™ Spraying Oil or Pulse® Penetrant are recommended for use with STINGER. Not all surfactants or crop oils are of equal quality. Dow AgroSciences does not support the use of products other than those listed above. See the label for more instructions. Restraints DO NOT spray if foliage is wet from rain or dew or rain is likely to occur within one hour or if heavy rain is likely to occur within 48 hours. DO NOT store a suspension of Stinger or tank mixes for more than1 day otherwise significant breakdown will occur. DO NOT treat newly sown pastures as severe damage may occur. DO NOT apply more than one application of STINGER either alone or tank-mixed per season. DO NOT apply to blackberry bushes bearing mature fruit. DO NOT burn off, cut or clear blackberry or other woody weeds for at least 6 months after spraying. DO NOT apply by aerial application in wind in excess of 15 km/hr or air temperatures above 35ºC (except when applying to Mimosa pigra) DO NOT apply to crops or weeds which may be stressed due to prolonged periods of extreme cold, moisture stress (waterlogging or drought) or previous herbicide treatment as reduced levels of control may result. When treatment is followed by a severe stress such as drought, prolonged cold, water logging or frost condition, growth retardation may occur. In areas prone to flooding, treatment should commence after any annual flooding, as such areas flooded within 9 months following application may have reduced results.
