We realize how difficult it can be trying to caravan with such a large number of Corvettes. It is recommended
that you form a partnership and partner with one another or with your Corvette Club. Should you find yourself separated from the larger Caravan, for whatever reason, look to the Route Book to find the next location
where the Caravan is going to stop and plan to meet up with everyone there.

The Gulf States Region Route Book is divided into sections. Each Section covers a specific Caravan topic.
Some sections are further divided into shorter lengths and contain specific instructions for that section.

INTRODUCTION
Your 2014 Gulf States Region Caravan Captains, Glenn and Andrea Johnson, the State Regional Leaders, all of
the Local Leaders and host committees welcome you to the Gulf States Region of the 2014 National Corvette Museum Caravan. This event will be celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the NCM. Planning has been
ongoing for over four years resulting in twenty-nine United States, and four Canadian, Regional Caravans
converging on Bowling Green, KY with approximately 10,000 Corvettes. You are among this fortunate group,
which will participate in this once in a lifetime event.
The purpose of this Route Book is not to plan your time minute-by-minute, but to let you know what is happening, where it's happening and when it's happening. It will be your choice to participate, bypass or improvise. No matter what choice you make, you will know the status of the Gulf States Region Caravan.
Please take every opportunity to thank the hosts, sponsors and organizers, at every location, for their involvement and their efforts to make this one of the best caravans ever. Gulf States Region Caravaner's Guide
The Gulf States Region Caravan will begin its journey to Bowling Green at Birmingham, Alabama with approximately 200 plus Corvettes. If you have never been in a caravan this large, read this article...twice. If you
have been in a big caravan before, read it at least once because you will find something new.
If you remember only one thing, from this article, please... make it this one: If you use your head before you
use your right foot, you'll end up being a courteous, safe and (reasonably) lawful National Corvette Caravaner. Some of us like to get out on the back roads by ourselves once in a while and let her rip, but with a group
as large as this Caravan, we are going to have a better time if we try to not drive aggressively.
The National Corvette Caravan, the Gulf States Regional Caravan, the Gulf States Region Captains, the State
Regional Leaders, Local Leaders and Organizing Team are not responsible for your actions. If you drive irresponsibly or violate the law, in the process of caravanning to Bowling Green, you shall pay the consequences. We do not insure your vehicle and we do not post bail.
The Caravan is not a race.
There is no prize for getting there first.
On the Road
Most of the time, on the highway, the Caravan Leader will hold a speed to within 5 mph of the posted limit
We know there are drivers who want to run faster. If you believe the Caravan is moving too slow, exit the
main group and run at a speed at which you are comfortable, however, keep in mind: law enforcement will
be aware of a group of Corvettes as large as we will be and they will be out there.
There will be those who like to travel well below the speed limit, if that's you, just slow to a speed you
choose. We're all going to the same place. If you get there a little later, it won't matter. Once we depart the
Interstate Highways, the pace will slow down a bit.
On multi-lane highways, generally, the Caravan will "drive right and pass left". Exceptions might be if the
Caravan Leader needs to move into left lanes to stay on the route at an interchange or intersection or pass
a line of slower moving, non-caravan vehicles. We suggest entering the left lane only to pass slower moving
vehicles and stay, most of the time, in the same lane as the Caravan. If you are in the left lane and another
car wants to overtake, move right allowing it to pass. You must allow cars to pass across the caravan as they
merge into or out of other lanes. Please be most vigilant of this on the Interstate, near interchanges, and
entrance and exits.
Caravanning in a manner that has cars following each other close enough such that non-caravan vehicles
cannot pass through, or across the caravan, (besides being arrogant and unfriendly) is illegal. If you still want
to caravan to keep others from invading your space....the cops are out there waiting for you.
There's another unattractive aspect in this issue. There are dangerous drivers on the road and nothing angers a Type A personality more than a bunch of Corvettes, slowing and/or blocking traffic. Aggressive drivers
can be provoked into doing something dangerous like cutting off Caravaners or running them off the road.
Please avoid situations where the closeness of Caravan vehicles could set-up these types of problems.
Truckers: Most are Courteous Drivers But...
The trucking industry is enhancing our nation's economy through interstate commerce. Truck drivers do that
in vehicles, which weigh as much as 80,000 pounds and are not capable of Corvette-like passing and braking
maneuvers. For our own safety, let's cut the truckers some slack, but if you decide to cut them off, instead; be
careful ...you might find yourself looking up at the front axle of a Peterbilt.
Experience in National Caravans and in other events involving large caravans tell us that while most professional truck drivers drive in a safe, prudent and understanding manner, there are some who do not.
A few incidents were unprovoked, but others were provoked by Caravaners who cut-off, blocked or otherwise impeded trucks moving on the road. If you find yourself in a situation where you're considering driving
with intent to harass truckers, keep this thought in mind; such action may provoke retaliation and those
truckers who decide to retaliate might do so against other, innocent Caravaners not involved in your harassment campaign. Bottom line: leave the truckers alone, even if they make you angry.
The Danger of Rubber Banding
Long caravans of cars running close to each other have a tendency to change lengths when the Caravan
Leader or other Caravaners make speed changes. This action is called "rubber banding". As the caravan
speeds up, the distance between cars increases. As the speed change migrates rearward, the rate of the
increase will, also, increase. The first car speeds-up. The next speeds-up a little more to catch the first. The
third car speeds-up even more to catch the second and, well, you can see where this is going. Once the
mid-sections notice the speed change, they end-up accelerating briskly.This can end with the rear-most cars
having to rapidly increase speed by 40-50 mph after the leader's speed only went up 10 mph. Once mid and
back-runners get the speed change accomplished, they immediately have to slow down to avoid running
into the back of each other once they decide they've "caught-up".
The reverse of this is also true and potentially more dangerous; the lead car slows, the next car takes a split
second to react, then slows more. The third car uses up distance in reacting, and then slows even more
abruptly, and, well you get the idea. In short order, if people are following closely, you've got drivers way into
ABS trying to stop and even people wrecking.
The Caravan Leaders are aware of the rubber band phenomena and will always make speed changes slowly.
If the Caravan is running tight, drivers in the middle and rear portions of the caravan must be acutely aware
of this rubber band phenomena and learn to anticipate its effects.
Because "rubber banding" is part of normal Caravan movement, we advise against attempting to follow
another caravan car too closely. Most accidents, which occur in caravans, are rear end collisions caused by
following too closely combined with "rubber-banding".
Two-Way Radios, Radar Warning Receivers
The Caravan Team leadership will be using professional grade radios for communication. We know that most
in the caravan will be using GMRS and Family Radio Service (FRS) equipment along with some Citizen Band
(CB) units. The caravan leaders will monitor those frequencies as time permits and pass along pertinent
information.

Some of the fun of caravanning is to get on the radio and converse with your friends, however, when you're
on the official Caravan frequencies we ask that you observe some radio discipline.
1) Listen first, then push-to-talk. When you go to transmit, before you key the mic, listen a bit, if someone is talking, wait until they are done, then transmit. This keeps us from "stepping" all over each
other.
2) When you key-up to transmit, remember that the radio takes a split second to switch from receiver
to a transmitter. If you key the mic and immediately start talking, the first part of your words will
often be cut-off.
3) The official FRS/GMRS "Caravan Channel" will be 7.0. This will be the radio frequency used by
Caravan Captains to broadcast official Caravan information. The Organizing Team asks that you
keep non-official communication on that frequency to a minimum.
4) "Smokey reports"; Caravaners want to know where the cops are hiding, however, if you are in the
main group, keep in mind; a few reports of the same law enforcement unit are good, but scores
of people, all on the radio talking about the same cop, ties up the channel and is confusing. Once
Smokey Bear is located, it's not necessary for everyone passing that cop make a report.
Radar Detectors
The Lead Cars will be equipped with detectors, however, as the Lead Cars will run close to the speed limit;
radar enforcement will probably be a moot issue.
Stops on the Way
There will be a rest stop en route to Bowling Green on Wednesday. The caravan will stop at Athens, AL for a
rest stop. If there are any other stops, they will be announced at the driver's meetings.
Who's Leading and Are Their Lights On?
While some participants in the Caravan may want to run faster or slower than the main caravan, or travel, in
their own group away from the Caravan Leaders, there will be some caravaners'wishing to form-up on the
Caravan Leaders. To make identification of the Lead Car easy, it will be marked in a distinctive manner with
marking visible from the rear.
If your car has DRLs, your parking lights will be on, if you don't have DRLs you can turn your headlights or
parking lights on, if you want. However, "lights-on" is not a Caravan requirement.
Car Preparation
You'll drive a minimum of 1,000 miles on the National Corvette Caravan, so do some preventative maintenance to your car before you leave. Make sure your tires are in acceptable condition and properly inflated for
the trip. If your oil change interval will come up on the trip, change your oil and filter before you go. Lube the
chassis, service the transmission and axle and change the fuel filter, if necessary. If you haven't had the frontend aligned in a while, do that, too. If you're driving a pre-'84 car and you haven't adjusted the steering box
in a long time, or it's never been done, do that. Inspect the front of your radiator to insure it's not blocked
with debris. If your car has electric cooling fans, make sure the system works properly.

Terry McManmon suggests the NCRS establish a common library or archive for Corvette
materials.
November 1984
John Amgwert presents a plan to the NCRS for a technical library that could become a
museum.
July 1985
Some library materials gathered - Amgwert proposes the library/museum be incorporated as a separate entity for tax purposes.
July 1986
NCRS Board appoints McManmon chairman of the Library/Archives and Museum Committee to explore a foundation separated from the NCRS.
June 1987
Ray Battaglini volunteers for the committee
January 1988
opular opinion is the NCRS turn toward a museum versus a library/archive to obtain
501 (C)(3) status,
May 1988
McManmon meets with Bowling Green Assembly Plant personnel, Paul Schnoes and
Darrel Bowling, and agreement is reached that the NCRS is to lead the museum effort.
July 1988
McManmon's final report results in the formation of the NCRS Foundation.
November 1988
Bylaws and Articles of Incorporation filed. Ray Bataglini elected President of The Board of
Directors.
January 1990
City of Bowling Green proposes the museum be located near the Assembly Plant. An
offer of 32.9 acres and complete infrastructure at no cost to the Foundation is offered
along with a $4.3 million tax-free bond issue to help with the financing. The Board accepts the offer.
January 1990
To broaden support for the museum, the foundation's name is changed from the NCRS
Foundation to the National Corvette Museum Foundation. Four NCRS board positions
are eliminated and allocated to leading Corvette club umbrella organizations
November 1990
The NCM Annex is opened in a strip mall.
January 1991
Ray Battaglini steps down as Foundation President and Dan Gale is elected to take his
place.
March 1992
A fund drive begins with the UAW Assembly Plant workers authorizing payroll deductions. A total of $170,000 is raised.
June 1992
The Ground Breaking Ceremony is conducted
June 1993
A $6.6 million loan is secured from local banks.
September 1994 The National Corvette Museum opens. The first caravan is conducted.
December 1996
Wendell Strode becomes the Executive Director of the NCM.
September 1999 The 2nd NCM Caravan is held to commemorate the 5th Anniversary of the NCM.
June 2003
The 3rd NCM Caravan is held to coincide with The 50th Anniversary of the Corvette.
April 2008
A 47,000 square foot addition is started.
September 2009 The 4th Caravan to celebrate the 15th Anniversary of the NCM and The Grand Opening
of the expanded museum.
August 2014
The 5th Caravan to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the NCM and NCM Motorsports
Complex Official Opening.
