Once again its time to cast your vote for the VADA SHEL GAFFORD MEMORIAL AWARD for EXCELLENCE in SPORTSMANSHIP. Please take a minute or two to read through the following nominations and vote for the one you feel best exemplifies the qualities of good sportsmanship and dedication to the advancement of the sport of Dressage. Each Chapter is to determine how they will collect the votes of their members. The Chapter representatives will then report their Chapter vote tallies to the Shel Award Coordinator. Vote tallies must be reported by December 15th, and the results will be announced at the VADA Awards Banquet in January 2007. The recipient of the Shel Award will be presented with a commemorative plaque and a check for $250.00. THE NOMINEES ARE: Peggy Minnich, VADAF I would like to nominate Peggy Minnich for the Shel Gafford Memorial Sportsmanship Award for 2006. Peggy exemplifies dedication as a rider, trainer, coach, judge, club president and mentor. She is an achiever and her years of training her horse Fearless Legend from training level through I1 show her dedication and love of the sport. With Fearless retired, she has partnered with a four year old Dutch Warmblood mare, Vinca, and continues active involvement in the show ring. Her sportsmanship is evident as a competitor, trainer and coach. She willingly shares her years of experience as a rider in and out of the show ring with her students and fellow club members. Peggy has served as president of VADAF for three years. Through her encouragement and enthusiasm, membership and interest has grown. Under Peggy’s direction, the club has sponsored a recognized show the past three years and volunteer involvement has expanded. Her leadership and knowledge of our beloved sport is a wonderful example of willingness to give ones time and talents. Submitted by Barbara Ellis, VADAF Abby Zezeski, SVDA I’d like to nominate Abby Zezeski for the Shel Gafford sportsmanship award. Abby is a 16 yr. old dressage rider with the SVDA. She enjoys showing with her horse, TOT, and win or lose, is able to always point out the positive in herself and in her horse. I’ve never seen her upset by her instructor’s criticism, nor the judges’. Prior to each riding lesson she takes, she pores over her previous score sheets to apply the judge’s feedback to her teacher’s instruction. Being a public high school teacher myself, this is a quality not seen often enough. Abby often attends schooling shows with friends she’s made through her interest in riding. She never hesitates to offer helpful pointers and assistance even though she’s aiding those whom she’ll be competing against! When Abby attended the Jr. National competition in Leesburg this summer, I watched her help her fellow riders with their tack, braiding, and grooming, even though she was ready to call it a long, hot day. Such unselfishness is hard to find among our teens of today. These are but a few of the excellent sportsmanship qualities I’ve seen Abby display in the past, and I’m sure, will continue to display in the future. She is trained and ridden by Paige Nuckols of Merry Point and owned by Carol Dawson of Morattico. This is the second year of showing for Morning Glory and Nuckols. Competitors must earn qualifying scores in BLM classes at recognized dressage shows in Region 1 throughout the year in order to compete in the finals. Twenty-six horses competed in the First Level, Senior Rider A Finals in at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington. Judges were Dianah Babcock and Joan Humphrey, both “S” dressage judges. Morning Glory placed first with a score of 70.286%. She and her rider Paige Nuckols were honored at an awards ceremony held at the Anderson Coliseum at the Virginia Horse Center on Oct. 21. The pair also was awarded cash, and a quarter sheet embroidered with the BLM logo. “We are proud of Glory and I am so impressed with the skill Paige showed in giving this mare the opportunity to be her best,” said owner Carol Dawson. 7 BLM photos from Cheryl Painter and Jody Swartz CONGRATS TO ALL OF OUR MEMBERS! Paige Nuckols won the First Level A championship riding Morning Glory (70.266%). Cheryl Painter took third place in the Training Level A championship on Tjerk L (65.833%). Jody Swartz tied for 8th place in the Training Level A championship on Rainbow’s Radiant Apollo (61.667%). April Trimmer finished third in the Third Level Junior/Young Rider Championship with Herwim (60.833%). 8 My Life with Savvy – Part 4, Cheryl Painter If you recall in last month’s newsletter the vet and farrier decided to put a metal plate to hold and stabilize the inside and outside hoof wall. That metal plate lasted two shoeings, now the metal plate was low enough that it needed to be removed so the hoof could be trimmed. It took Dan and Erik about ½ hour to remove the epoxy and plate. Everyone was concerned as to the integrity of his foot. The first picture above is before the trim; the second is after the trim. And as you can see the laminae has completely cornified. I know it’s hard to believe but Savvy was putting his weight on this hoof we had stopped nerve blocking him a couple of shoeings ago. Now Eric had to build a hoof wall and he needed to allow for drainage. Eric said he was embarrassed at his first attempted, but it looked great to me, my horse had a shoe and was walking. 9 Eric used epoxy to build the hoof wall and he had some tape, which contained nylon to help stabilized the front of the hoof. Dan used a small plastic straw, which he inserted in the front for drainage. Editor note: The final part of Cheryl’s story will be in the December newsletter. VADA Central Chapter October 16, 2006 Minutes Participants: Alison Douglas, Mary Shipman, Ann Draine, Lynn Whiteside-Jones, Capri Winser, and Karen Bell The meet was held via teleconference at approximately 6:30. Old Business: Treasurer Report Alison gave the treasurer’s report as follows: The club has between $2,500 and $3,000 in the account. Planning Committee Report Lynn reported the following: The schooling show at Campbell Springs was discussed. Feedback was very positive. Lynn discussed using the facility again. Lynn to check to see what the total facility fee will be for 2007 and availability dates. Lynn is trying to rotate show locations to make it convenient to all members. The plan is to schedule 2007 in time to be able to put in Purple Book. Lynn inventoried ribbons and it was decided to order next year’s show ribbons with year end award ribbons to save on shipping. Lynn got approval to purchase the new tests for 1st year. The are twenty-five cents each , so she estimated a total cost of around $150. Capri has confirmed the use of Aria Farm for our 6/16/07 licensed show. The November General Membership Meeting will be held on Monday November 13 at 7:00 pm at FasMart in Mechanicsville. The speaker will be Dr. James Casey on Lameness and joint disease. We will also be voting for officers for 2007. Ann will ask Tracy Spinelli to speak about Conditioning the Dressage Horse at our February General Membership Meeting. It was scheduled for Friday, February 16 at 7:00 pm at Ann’s house (Edgehill Farm) in Aylett. Volunteer vouchers/scholarships – historically, the board voted funds for the scholarships for the year and gave out scholarships as long as the money lasted. The funds came from our recognized show proceeds. This year, the board never allocated funds for the scholarships, and no applications have been received so far this year. Since we didn’t have a recognized show this year, it was agreed not to allocate any funds for scholarships this year, and to resume the program next year. It was also noted that the club bylaws state that members cannot be awarded scholarships two years in a row. Membership Report Mary reported eleven 2007 membership renewals, (actually only 9 renewals, because I counted our 2 life members). Mary to revise the membership form to include committee volunteer options. Mary to draft a welcome package with the membership committee. Capri to draft a renewal reminder letter announcing free Club Polos will be given 10 to the first to join or renew. First come, first serve. So far the membership committee is Ann Draine, Janet Rivara, and Mary Shipman. Anyone is welcome. Capri to work with Karen on Direct mail for this letter. New business: The nominating committee for 2007 VADACC officers is: Alison Douglas, Lynn Whiteside-Jones and Ann Draine. Capri will write an announcement for the newsletter. Officers will be voted on at the November meeting and 2007 officers installed at the December meeting. Ann Drain will be on the Awards Committee but prefers not to chair it. Board members volunteered to ask various members to serve on this committee. The Banquet date is tentatively Jan. 13, to be confirmed or changed by the Awards Committee. Lynn is coordinating Silent Auction for State Banquet (January 21, 2007) and was asked to write something about this for the next newsletter.
