Volume 26, Issue 08 August 2013 Hampton Roads Chapter #5300 Can you believe it is Already August? This year has flown by so far. I guess that happens when you have a lot of things to do. But the year’s not over yet and there are even more great activities and events on the horizon for all Chapter Members to participate in. Rides, the Chapter “Fall Into Harley” Picnic and so on. But before we move on to what the Chapter has coming up, let’s take a trip back to July 5th and 6th. Those were the dates that the Battlefield H.O.G. Chapter from Gettysburg, PA came down to pay us a visit. They arrived on Friday July 5th bringing with them 26 of their Chapters Members ready to have a great time down in the Hampton Roads area with the Hampton Roads H.O.G. Chapter. And we did not disappoint them. The Chapter arranged a meet & greet ride to their hotel to get to know each other and drop off a little goodie bag that the Chapter put together for them. A little something to welcome them to our neck of the woods. A big thank you goes out to Donna Delaune for putting the bags together for the Chapter. They were definitely a hit. After we discussed the ride we had planned for them Saturday morning we departed and headed home. The morning would be here soon and we had a 250 mile ride planned for them. Saturday July 6th was upon us. The Battlefield H.O.G. Ride was on. All we needed now was riders. And riders we had….64 total riders and passengers were ready to hit the open road. There were 250 miles awaiting the group that would take us through the Virginia countryside, over cool bridges, down scenic by-ways onto a ferry and a trip down the Colonial Parkway. It sure was a great ride. The ride had a lunch stop included as well. It was not your ordinary lunch stop either. The Double “D” Lunch Wagon was waiting for us in West Point. Double “D” you say? We called the lunch wagon that to refer to the two lovely ladies that put it all together. Donna Delaune & Debra Paulus. The lunch wagon was full of sub sandwiches, chips, water, soda and even a large water cooler full of ice water and wash clothes to cool us down. What a relief that was as it had turned out to be a very warm day. All in all it was a fantastic ride. We could not have pulled off such a ride if it weren’t for the great group of Road Captains we had and the way they handled situations on the road. A gigantic thank you goes out to all! This was possible because of all the volunteers that helped set up, arranged to pick up and deliver the food and decorating the HOG Pen. And let’s not forget the time and effort put forth by our sponsor HRHD and Chad Cox. Chad not only provided the BBQ Butts, he actually slow cooked them all day, on his new giant grill/ smoker, while we were out on the ride. Boy was it delicious. Without the help and support of our Chapter Members and sponsor we would not have been able to have such an event. I cannot express my Thank You enough. We have a great Chapter!!!!! All in all, the Battlefield H.O.G. Chapter had an incredible experience and probably won’t forget it for a long time, if ever. That’s Southern Hospitality for you. The Hampton Roads H.O.G. Chapter has been invited up to Gettysburg in the Spring of 2014. The dates are to be determined but the first part of May is looking good. Stayed tuned for the exact dates. Now let’s move into the future. Please take a look at the August Chapter calendar and see what the Chapter has planned for rides and other events. There are plenty of items to choose from. If you have any ideas of any events or rides you would like the Chapter to set up, feel free to contact me or any of the Chapter Officers and we will see what we can do. But the one major item we have coming up quick is the 5th Annual “Fall Into Harley” Picnic set for Sunday, September 8th, 2013 from 12-4pm in the HOG Pen. The picnic gets better every year and this year is no different. Tickets are only $10. Where else can you go and have a heck of a lot of fun and have a delicious meal catered by Whisky Hill BBQ? There will also be a new event this year you won’t want to miss. It is something that involves our guests, Tidewater H.O.G., and requires strength, will power and no fear of water. Got you interested? You have to come to the picnic to find out. Tickets will be available at the August Chapter meeting and at HRHD until Wednesday September 4th. See the picnic flyer in this newsletter and at HRHD for more details. There is plenty more I could write but I think it is time to go Ride and Have Fun!! Hope to see you at the next Chapter ride or event. Keep the shiny side up and the rubber to the road!!! Jim Paulus, Director, Hampton Roads H.O.G. I admit, I had to smile, and chose my answer carefully: “It’s a great place”, I said. Lisa and Don Pritt, and Steve and I, set out Friday, June 28 to head up north to Pennsylvania’s Amish Country. It was a beautiful day. That lasted until we crossed over into PA. The temperature dropped from in the 90’s to into the 70’s and big storm clouds rolled in. We seemed to be riding right between the storms. We passed an area where there had been rain and gusty wind; branches, twigs and leaves were down everywhere. We were very fortunate to have missed that. But we didn’t miss the rain. Up ahead, I could see it moving across in front of us. It lasted for about 15 minutes. Upon arrival at dinner, we were dry and it was wet, but sunny again. We ate at Plain & Fancy Farm Restaurant family style. That means we sat at a table of 10 (including us) and passed the food around like you would do at a family gathering. There was fried chicken, roast beef, sausage, mashed potatoes and gravy, fresh green beans, cooked dried corn, chicken and dumplings, ice cream, shoe fly pie, apple pie, chocolate cake and apple crisp. We definitely didn’t leave hungry. After dinner, we headed down the road to the Orchard Inn, our accommodations for the 2 nights. The Orchard Inn is a family owned place situated between the towns of Bird-in-Hand and Intercourse and gets its name from the surrounding peach orchard. After settling in, we gathered up some chairs and sat outside to talk. There were fire-flies by the hundreds across from us setting the field aglow. By then the sun had set. I noticed after a bit that it was VERY quiet. No bug sounds, no frogs, no birds or owls, no traffic, just the faint clip-clopping of a horse and buggy in the distance occasionally. It was very relaxing. (Continued on next page) HR HOG EVENT LINE: (757) 872-0955 HR HOG WEBSITE: http://www.hrhogchapter.com Volume 26, Issue 08 August 2013 Hampton Roads HOG Chapter #5300 Yorktown, VA Our Sponsor: Hampton Roads Harley Davidson Saturday morning dawned bright and sunny. After a light breakfast provided by the Inn, we rode over to Kitchen Kettle Village in Intercourse. It’s a shopping area filled with a variety of little specialty stores. Lisa and I did most of the shopping, while the men sat in the shade. The Village also offered buggy rides, so we signed up for that. Our Amish driver was quite knowledgeable of the Amish and Mennonite history’s as well as the history of the town of Intercourse. We toured an Amish farm that had dairy cows and we were led into the original farm house also. It was quite an experience to be IN a buggy and see just how the other traffic treats the horse and buggies that are so common on the road. We ate lunch at the Kettle Café then did some more shopping in the surrounding area. After we were all shopped out and our bikes bulging, we headed back to the Inn for some down time before dinner. The Historic Revere Tavern dates back to 1740. At one point in its history, it was owned by President James Buchanan. The food was very good. It was dark by the time we left for the Inn. As we were riding back to the Inn, we could see fireworks off in the distance. We could still see them once we reached the Inn, so we watched for a little bit then sat around outside and talked again, enjoying the quiet night. We were told conflicting weather reports about Sunday. Some said sun, some said rain. We were in and out of the sun most of the day. We rode over to Battlefield Harley in Gettysburg, PA and had the chance to look around a little. It seems to be a really nice dealership. Of course I had to buy a shirt with ‘Battlefield Harley’ on it. Then we went on our way. We stopped for lunch at Famous Dave’s in Frederick, MD. It was a nice break and the food was good too. We proceeded on and were hit by a surprise shower near Fredericksburg, VA. I say it was a surprise shower because it really didn’t look like it was going to rain: no dark clouds, etc. It only lasted about 5 minutes. Unfortunately, we ended up behind 2 hog filled tractor-trailers. You say appropriate? I say smelly! We were glad when they went a different way. We continued on down Route 17 into Tappahannock to the Sheetz gas station. We said our good-byes there because we weren’t stopping anywhere else until we reached home. A safe ride to and from our destination with good friends, an awesome road captain (Lisa), great food and beautiful scenery: What more could you ask for? Our ride took us through Deep Creek, past the Great Dismal Swamp, and down a nice set of twisty roads to Pungo and the museum. We made our way inside and did a little walking around and looking before meeting with one of the guides. After a short stroll, we found ourselves inside a replica of a World War I French aircraft hangar. There were only a few of the museum’s aircraft in the hangar as there had been a wedding reception there the night before. That's right, you can rent parts of the museum for your special occasion. From here we walked past the maintenance hangar where many aircraft were stored. We were unable to go in because it was Sunday and the mechanics don't work on Sundays. They are one of the few paid employees of the museum and most of the people there are volunteers. Warbird - any vintage military aircraft After a peek through the windows, we moved on to the now operated by civilian organizations. WWII German hangar. The steel structure was bought, disassembled, shipped here and reassembled. They were designed and manufactured to be erected and covered with local materials. There are still bullet marks and the signature of a Polish prisoner/ slave visible on it. From here we made it back to the main building for a little more self guided touring and then on to lunch. We made the short ride to the Del Rican Restaurant for some Puerto Rican cuisine and then returned home. One small sad note about the ride is if anyone wants to go to the museum they need to do so soon because the man who owns it may be selling his aircraft and closing it. That's right, it is privately owned by one man. Donna and I have been doing the Motorcycle Grand Tour of VA which is a passport contest comprising of 45 stops around the state. Since we were heading towards Roanoke we figured we would get some stops on our way out. Jim Paulus, Bobby Strickland and Scott Smith are also doing the passports so we decided to meet at Fred’s Restaurant in Franklin since they were a stop we needed and we could also eat breakfast. Larry and Monica Snow, Chester Snody, and Frank Dixon decided to ride with us also. We ate, got our passports stamped and headed out on Rt. 58. We went to South Boston and picked up 3 more stops and then to Danville before heading to Roanoke. We had a couple of unexpected stops on the way to take care of such as a loose shifter on Bobby’s motorcycle but it gave us a few minutes to stretch while Scott fixed it. After we got to Danville, Donna decided to ride with Debra Paulus and Ron Segal in Debra’s Tahoe since her ankle was still not back to 100%. We stopped for gas and ice cream and got about 35 miles from Roanoke and we hit rain, not just a light rain but a heavy rain with lots of wind so we stopped at a gas station to let the worst past. After about 15 minutes we decided to continue on. We got pretty wet and cold for a little bit but we have been in a lot worse. We got to the motel and the rain was pretty much gone and I had found that Donna had already got us checked in so I went and changed into some dry clothes. On Thursday Donna and I decided to ride to Bristol and work on a few more passport stops. We got on the road about 7 am and had to stop before we got to Bristol to put on our rain gear. We had some very hard rain near Bristol and there was a lot of water on the road. As we got near Black Wolf H-D we had to stop at a intersection that had several inches of water. As we were waiting for the light to change we had not one but 3 trucks go by us and they sprayed so much COLD water on us that our helmets got filled with water! We stopped at Black Wolf long enough to dry out a little and most of the rain stopped as we headed toward Chilhowie for our next stop. One of the places we rode to is a small town on Route 58 called Independence. To get there we rode down Route 16 and it is one of those fantastic roads I would recommend if you enjoy some twisty roads. If you have the chance to ride Route 16 north toward West Virginia you should do that also, you won’t regret it. Donna and I managed in getting another 7 passport stops by the time we got back to the hotel. The NASCAR simulator Chapter Challenge was going on when we got back so I gave that a couple of tries and managed in getting the best time before the opening ceremonies started. On Friday we got the chance to practice for the Skilled Rider Competition that was called the VA Pathways event. This is a combination of 4 different skill games all in one and it relies on you doing the course in a certain time to win. You try to complete the course in the same time so it is about being consistent and not fast. It was made up of a Snake Bite (Double S Turns), Slow Race Lane, Rock & Roll Pull Out, (135 deg turn) another Snake Bite and the Figure 8 box. I practiced a bunch and was not as consistent as I wanted. Friday evening was the escorted Parade to downtown Roanoke. Our Chapter was responsible for supplying the volunteers for the landing of the Parade Friday evening. Donna and I and lots of other HRHOG’s along with East Coast HOG headed downtown to get our assignments. (continued on next page) HR HOG EVENT LINE: (757) 872-0955 HR HOG WEBSITE: http://www.hrhogchapter.com Volume 26, Issue 08 August 2013 Hampton Roads HOG Chapter #5300 Yorktown, VA Our Sponsor: Hampton Roads Harley Davidson Donna and I had to help direct the parade participants to the parking area and also keep the area clear of traffic until the parade arrived. It turned out to be a lot of fun to see the hundreds of motorcycles come down the street and we all got to help out in getting volunteer points for the Chapter Challenge. On Saturday we had some light rain in the morning but it did not stop the Biker Games. They had 3 different games this year. All of the winners of the games got points for the Chapter Challenge. The first one was the Ball Drop; this requires the passenger to place tennis balls on top of some highway cones as you ride next to them. Donna and I have had fantastic success in this game in the past, not this year, I felt unstable and put my foot down near the last cone, game over! The next game was a Slow Ride but with animal cutouts placed in the lanes that you had to avoid. My results were not good on this, I put my foot down again! Game over. The game after that was the Barrel Roll. You have to get an empty beer keg down the slow ride lane first while keeping it in your lane. At least in this game you keep your feet on the ground as you are pushing the barrel so putting my feet down was no problem. I should have been able to do this but I was slower than my opponent so I lost and game over! At least Tracy Spencer got a 3rd place in the Barrel Roll for the Chapter. After the Biker Games was the competition phase of the VA Pathways. They gave us as much practice as we wanted and I kept having problems on the Rock & Roll Pull Out with running over one of the cones. Most everyone had already posted their times and the co-leaders were 2 seconds off their time with no penalties and 3rd place was 3 seconds off their time with no penalties. I finally figured out what I was doing wrong with my path and was ready to try it for my posted time. Well, I managed in being within 1 second of my time BUT I had a penalty on the Snake Bite which added a 3 second penalty to my time so that was the end of that! Game over! The next event was the dinner and then the closing ceremonies. The dinner was spaghetti and it was pretty good. The closing ceremonies started smoothly but then we got a little thunderstorm that made most of us get under the big tent they had set up. My time for the Chapter Challenge on the NASCAR simulator managed in winning HRHOG first place but the overall Chapter Challenge went to Roanoke HOG. We left Sunday morning and got 3 more passport stops that we needed and Donna and I ended up with about 1186 miles for our trip but the best part was all the great memories that were made. Looking forward to next year’s Rally already!! Remember the HOG motto, Ride and Have Fun!! Terry sent me an email stating that we would leave promptly at 0700 on the 26th. It always takes a little work to get a group moving so we left a little late – 0700 and approximately 37 seconds give or take…..We had six riders and five bikes. I am always grateful for the safety briefs during our meetings, if nothing else as a reminder. However, I don’t remember them covering what to do when a cage passes you on the shoulder of an exit ramp only to enter the line of bikes in the middle when the shoulder ran out!!!! This happened twice, once on the way out and once on the way back. Nor has it been covered what to do when involved in a high speed chase when the ‘victim’ attempts to scrape the pursuing trooper off his tail by pulling directly in front of the lead bike (Terry’s). Of course, these are not your typical topics when speaking of safety either. The ride was fantastic! We covered about 2,500 miles in 3 days. We started the Dragon’s Tail at Deals Gap that included several dragon sculptures and the Tree of Shame. In lieu of providing fruit from the Tree of Shame there hangs a few of the parts from some of the unluckier riders’ bikes. If you ever make the trip keep in mind they have a couple of professional photographers along the way. You can purchase the photos on line for as little as $6 each. They are definitely good quality prints. I always heard that the Dragon was crowded on the weekends but we arrived early at about 0930 and managed to escape the crowds. It was a good run. On Saturday we not only ‘slayed’ the dragon but also went on the ‘Moonshine Run’ and many twists in between. The day took us by some very scenic countryside including some rushing white water creeks, rivers, dams and a couple of fantastic waterfalls. Oh…. and Dead Man’s Hill? We would have made it if it wasn’t for the road block near the top. Terry or Ronnie Mayo can fill in the details so ask them about the next time you see them. Tree of Shame Fantastic water falls...and motorcycles! It is believed that the first use of the term "hog" in relation to Harley-Davidson traces its origins to the early 1920s. The official company racing team of that era was known as the "Wrecking Crew" because of their nearly total domination of the dirt track races they entered. An additional non-racer who was a member of the team was a small pig. Whenever a Harley-Davidson team member won a race, he stopped to pick up the pig and took it with him for a victory lap. After a while, race fans and some in the media began to informally refer to the team as the "Harley Hogs." However, the "Wrecking Crew" moniker was the one that persevered over time. As the "Harley Hogs" nickname faded, the word "hog" endured as the slang term among enthusiasts for a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The 3rd Edition of the Dictionary of American Slang even contains an entry for "hog" as being a "1960s motorcycle or motorcyclist" with a following entry mentioning HarleyDavidson by name. The word then became more official when the world's first factory-sponsored motorcycle club appeared.
