n November 26, in Philadelphia, the Postal Service issued
a First Class Kwanzaa stamp
(Forever® priced at 46 cents) in one design in a pressure-sensitive adhesive
pane of 20 stamps.
This new stamp design from the
USPS celebrates the annual non-religious holiday of Kwanzaa, which takes
place over seven days from December 26
to January 1. Kwanzaa derives its name
from the phrase “first fruits” in Swahili,
a widely spoken African language. Created in 1966, the holiday honors the African-American family, community, and
culture. The stamp art features a stylized
depiction of a man, woman, and child
dressed in traditional, African-inspired
clothing joined together in a unifying
embrace. The seven candles, known as
the mishumaa saba, are a centerpiece of
the Kwanzaa table. An open book symbolizes the holiday’s emphasis on knowledge and cultural history. The bold colors in the stamp art represent the colors
of the Kwanzaa flag — green for growth,
red for blood, and black for the African people. Artist R. Gregory Christie
worked with art director Antonio Alcalá,
who designed the stamp.

On November 19, 2013, in New York
City, the Postal Service issued a First
Class Hanukkah stamp (Forever® priced

Hanukkah, the joyous Festival of Lights,

began at sundown on November 27. The
stamp art is a photograph of a contemporary forged-iron menorah created by
Vermont blacksmith, Steven Bronstein.
Nine lighted white beeswax candles top
the branches. “Hanukkah” (the Hebrew
word for “dedication”) is spelled out
across the top of the stamp in yellow letters. Art director Ethel Kessler designed

The Star-Spangled Banner
On January 28, in Independence,
Missouri, the U.S.P.S. issued The StarSpangled Banner First-Class Mail stamp
(Forever® priced at 49 cents) in one design in a pressure-sensitive adhesive
booklet of twenty stamps, produced by
security printer Ashton Potter, and a coil
of 100, produced by security printers
Ashton Potter and CCL Label, Inc.
This stamp commemorates the 200th
anniversary of The Star-Spangled Banner
with a photograph of the flag that flies
over Fort McHenry National Monument
and Historic Shrine in Baltimore. This
flag is a replica of the one that inspired
Francis Scott Key to write “The StarSpangled Banner” after realizing that
Fort McHenry had withstood the British attack of September 13–14, 1814. The
picture of the flag was taken against a
backdrop of fireworks during an annual
celebration of Defenders’ Day. Photographer Gary Clark said it was a challenge
to get the fireworks and the flag in the
same shot and that “the wind picked up
quite a bit that night.” Art director Phil
Jordan designed the stamp. [Image unavailable at press time.]

n September 13, in Baltimore,
Maryland at the Anniversary
Festival at Fort McHenry, the
U.S. Postal Service issued The War of
1812: Fort McHenry (Forever® priced
at 49 cents) commemorative First-Class
Mail stamp, in one design, in a pressuresensitive adhesive pane of 20 stamps.
The $9.80 pane may not be split, and the
stamps may not be sold individually.
In 2014 the USPS continues its commemoration of the War of 1812, a conflict
with Great Britain that many Americans
viewed as the nation’s “Second War of
Independence.” The stamp subject is the
bombardment of Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland, in September 1814.
Illustrated with mixed media by noted
historical painter Greg Harlin, the stamp
art depicts the battle from the vantage
point of a group of soldiers manning a
cannon in defense of the fort. The stamp
art also gives prominence to “the rockets’
red glare” that Francis Scott Key wrote
about in The Star-Spangled Banner. A
portrait by Rembrandt Peale of the fort’s
commander, George Armistead, appears
on the reverse of the stamp pane (courtesy of the Maryland Historical Society).
The selvage engraving on the front of the
pane is a black-and-white version of a
painting by Percy Moran depicting Key
aboard the ship from which he witnessed
the battle. The stamp pane includes verso
text and selvage text. Art director Greg
Breeding designed the stamp and pane.

Poinsettia (Forever® priced at 49 cents)
First-Class Mail stamp, in one design, in
a pressure-sensitive adhesive booklet of
20 stamps.
The Poinsettia stamp features a
bright, cheerful rendering of America’s
favorite holiday flower. Introduced in
2013, the stamp is being reissued in
2014. The stamp art depicts the rich red
and vibrant green leaves surrounding
the flower — the cluster of small, rather
modest cup-shaped structures in the
center. The red “petals” that we think of
as the flower are actually modified leaves
called bracts. The art reference for this
stamp was a potted poinsettia. Designed

Winter Fun
On October 23, 2014, in New York
City, NY, the U.S. Postal Service will be
issued the Winter Fun stamps (Forever®
First-Class Mail priced at 49-cents) in
four designs, in a pressure-sensitive adhesive booklet of stamps.
With four playful designs, Winter
Fun stamps celebrate some of the sea-
son’s most enjoyable activities: iceskating, making snow angels, building snowmen, and bird-watching.
The art for the ice skaters stamp was
painted with acrylic on plywood
with a dry brush technique to give
the illustration a textured, folk-art
feel. The art for the other three stamps
was hand-sketched and then digitally
manipulated. Art director Ethel Kessler
designed the stamps using existing illustrations by Janet Atkinson (ice-skating),
Jing Jing Tsong (building snowmen and
making snow angels), and Christine Roy
(bird-watching).

Breast Cancer Research
On September 30, in Sacramento,
California, the U.S. Postal Service reissued the Breast Cancer Research semipostal stamp priced at 60 cents, in one
design, in a pressure-sensitive adhesive
pane of twenty stamps.
Semipostals are stamps sold at a
surcharge to raise money for a particular cause. Originally issued in 1998, the
stamp art depicts a woman standing with
her right arm raised, reaching behind
her head in the position recommended
for breast self-examination. The drawing of the woman’s body is set against a
background of pastel colors from yellow
to violet that cover the entire face of the
stamp. Across the top of the stamp are
the words “Breast Cancer.” Circling the
figure’s right breast are the phrases, in all
caps, “FUND THE FIGHT” and “FIND
A CURE.” Art director Ethel Kessler designed the stamp using original artwork
by Whitney Sherman.
