Forgotten Harvest 2012
201 2-2013 Annual Report OUR COMMUNITY ENGAGES TO END HUNGER All In: This Year’s Story Forgotten Harvest recorded another historic fiscal year in 2012-2013 with the rescue of 45.5 million pounds of fresh, healthy food; food that would have gone to a landfill, but instead found its way to the tables of those in need. As we reflect on the significant achievements of Forgotten Harvest in recent years, we recognize our strong growth is a function of a truly engaged community-a community that is “All In” and shares our vision of ending hunger. Over the past four fiscal years, our base of dedicated volunteers has grown from 1,000 to 12,000 dedicating 66,000 hours last year. During that four year period, our donor base grew from 16,000 to over 92,000 individuals, companies and organizations. Significant engagement this year came in the form of a one million dollar gift from Art Van Furniture and the donation of 92 acres of farmland from the Moroun family where we will grow and harvest fresh Michigan produce for years to come. This report celebrates the thousands of individuals and organizations that have engaged in our mission. Together, they comprise what we have branded as the Forgotten Harvest Rescue Team. The support we have received over the past few years represents a state of mind and level of commitment that, we believe, is unparalleled across the country and unique to Metro Detroit citizens. Thanks to your generosity, we move forward confidently in our relentless commitment to drive hunger from Metro Detroit. David Nicholson, Chairman, Board of Directors Susan Goodell, President and CEO Sincerely & Proudly, David Nicholson Chairman | Board of Directors Susan Ellis Goodell President and CEO Meet some members of the Forgotten Harvest Rescue Team It’s our Community All In to End Hunger Heart and passion for the unique Forgotten Harvest mission, the gratifying reward that work done today will help someone in need of food the next day... Most importantly, the confidence that a commitment today, be it time, talent or treasure, will drive our community further down the road to the day when no one will face hunger or a lack of fresh healthy food in Metro Detroit--all combine to serve as the common denominator and bond that ties our Forgotten Harvest Rescue Team together. The Forgotten Harvest Rescue Team is Metro Detroit at its finest, it’s most generous, rolling up our sleeves and working together in all kinds of ways to end hunger. We feed thousands of people in neighborhoods throughout the tri-county area. Every person has a different story, a different reason they stand in a line for food. All are assured that one of our 33 Forgotten Harvest trucks will arrive with fresh healthy food. Our mission is to relieve hunger and eliminate food waste in the Detroit metropolitan community by “rescuing” surplus, prepared and perishable food which is delivered daily, free of charge, to emergency food providers. 2012–2013 Annual Report Food Donors Forgotten Harvest is metro Detroit’s only food rescue operation. We rescue surplus, prepared and perishable food from a variety of sources such as grocers, major entertainment venues, dairies and area farms. 455 Food Donors Making a Difference Our food donors may be business competitors but that competition stops in their commitment to end hunger. Jayne Homco, President of Kroger Michigan Division and Doug Busch, Co-Owner Busch’s Fresh Food Market and Forgotten Harvest Board Member, stand together in their commitment to our mission. The Forgotten Harvest rescue model ensures our food donors will reduce waste costs, enhance profitability thorough valuable tax credits and demonstrate great corporate citizenship. Forgotten Harvest Farms We are not an organization afraid to try what others think can’t be done. During 2012, we launched an initiative to grow our own produce. Working with local farmers and the Oakland County Parks & Recreation Department, we planted and harvested over 440,000 pounds of produce on 37 acres of donated land. We also planted 500 apple trees in 2012 at Blake’s Farm which are expected to produce 125,000 pounds of apples annually by 2015. Inspired by her participation in a volunteer farm harvest event, Nora Moroun and the Moroun family donated the use of 92 acres of land to us. We celebrated our first harvest in mid-June 2013. We will be able to produce millions of pound of fresh produce in the future because of this generous donation. Food Processing Center We began a new era in our efforts to provide fresh, healthy food with the launch of our new food processing center. Physical facilities were donated by Garden Fresh Gourmet. We are now able to process and freeze significant volumes of vegetables and fruit that will allow us to store and distribute it during the winter when those foods are more difficult to procure. The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) and Eastern Market were critical partners in the development of our processing competency, providing grant funding for equipment and expertise. At the end of the 2012-2013 fiscal year, we were prepared to leverage our processing capabilities for commercial clients, a social enterprise, which will generate an additional revenue stream and add value to the services of Eastern Market by processing the produce that commercial food manufacturers and retailers have purchased through the Eastern Market food hub. Nora Moroun, Forgotten Harvest Board Member, (L) Jack Aronson, Founder and CEO of Garden Fresh Gourmet and (R) Dan Carmody, President of Eastern Market and Forgotten Harvest Board Member are committed to ending hunger in our community. America’s Most Efficient Food Rescue Organization Ninety-six percent of every dollar donated is spent on program services, a level of efficiency that has earned Forgotten Harvest a four-star rating from Charity Navigator for seven consecutive years. Only 2% of the organizations rated have achieved that record, indicating that Forgotten Harvest outperforms most other charities in America. In 2010, Forgotten Harvest embarked on an ambitious, three-year plan to double the organization’s distribution of fresh, healthy food to better meet the needs of our most vulnerable neighbors. The “Hunger Has an Address” Capacity Campaign allowed us to facilitate the development of infrastructure and program expansion needed to achieve this rapid growth as well as invest in the branding and marketing activities required to sustain our expanded service long-term by attracting new donors. Our original goal was to increase the amount of nutritious food rescued from 19.4 million pounds for FY 2009-2010 to 36 million pounds for FY 2012-2013. We surpassed that goal by rescuing and distributing 45.5 million pounds of food in FY 2012-2013. Campaign Impact • Oak Park facility expanded from 20,000 to 30,000 square feet. • Crumbling parking lot completely rebuilt including all underlying drainage infrastructure. • Expanded our refrigerated fleet to 33 trucks. • Expanded our clean repack room. • Constructed bathroom facilities to accommodate our rapidly increasing number of daily volunteers. • Increased our number of partner agencies to 280, including 69 mobile pantry partners in under served neighborhoods that lack traditional bricks-and-mortar agencies. • Launched Forgotten Harvest Farms to provide farm-fresh produce to help feed metro Detroit’s hungry. •E scalated marketing and development efforts, resulting in the addition of 60,000 new donors who will support our increased service capacity for years to come. • Raised the profile of the Forgotten Harvest brand in households throughout Metro Detroit.
