MARCH/APRIL 2016 - Buchanan High School
For The Parents, Students, Staff and Community of Buchanan High School Principal’s Message “Building Unity, Committed To Excellence” Office Hours 7:15 am – 4:30 pm www.clovisusd.k12.ca.us/bhs 327-3000 ADMINISTRATION Principal Deputy Principal Ricci Ulrich Richard Sarkisian Learning Directors Counselors Jennifer Bump Jennifer Carter James Gambrell Daryl Katoch Debi Kelly Aaron Morgan Saul Salinas Jeff Hodges -Head Counselor Tracy Brandon Daniel Felix Denae Hansen Maxx Her Shari Tolbert Troy Wagner MARCH/APRIL 2016 Volume XXI Issue 5 To download a PDF version of this newsletter, go to http://academypublishing.com/schools/buchanan/buchanan.php ‘BEAR TRACKS’ Mar/Apr 2016 Published Six Times Per Year Clovis Unified School District 1450 Herndon Avenue Clovis, CA 93611 Issue #5 The registration process has begun for the 2016-2017 school year. While the registration process will be completed by the end of March, our counseling team works with students and parents on any necessary program changes up until the walk through registration process in August. Please take time to look at the Clovis Unified Course Catalog which is located on our district website if you search the quick links. It is good review your student’s four year plan. There are many opportunities for juniors and seniors to take career related classes through our electives and pathway programs along with their college preparatory courses. School Assessment Review Team is a parent forum that meets monthly with school administration and staff. All parents are welcome. The annual SART survey is available this month. This year parents will be able to go online to take the SART survey. Please check our website or contact the Deputy Principal’s office for more information. The survey is anonymous and we appreciate your feedback. Another important exam is the Advanced Placement (AP) tests occurring in the first two weeks of May. Students and teachers have worked extremely hard to prepare for the College Board Exams. If students achieve a passing mark and the college or university accepts AP tests, this will save your student a substantial amount of money in college tuition fees. Students completing AP courses and scoring successfully on tests often enter college a semester or more ahead. Last but not least, eleventh grade students will take the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium test (SBAC) for language arts and mathematics. The test is administered on a computer. It is important for students applying to the California State University or CSU to complete this assessment. The university system uses the state test for Early Assessment Program or EAP. The EAP gives the CSU system data for college readiness and class placement. Buchanan High School receives data as well and will place students accordingly in classes that continue to support students accessing the CSU system after graduating from high school. If you have any questions on any information please contact your student’s counselor or visit our website. https://sites.google.com/a/clovisusd.k12.ca.us/buchanan-counseling-center/ Sincerely, Mama Bear Ricci Ulrich Our Mission — Buchanan High School will graduate productive citizens by teaching the California State Standards, teaching appropriate academic and social behavior and providing interventions until all students achieve and maintain proficiency. 2 Buchanan Registration for the 2016-2017 School Year Registration paperwork was distributed to all students in grades 9-11 on Monday, February 28, 2016, through physical education classes. Notes from Nurse Wendee Teens Coping with Grief and Loss Grief is the term used for the many feelings and behaviors we experience when we are faced with loss. The loss may be from the death of a significant other, relocation, or divorce. Grief is a natural and normal reaction to loss and change. Teens experience grief as they have feelings and are aware of losses. However, everyone experiences grief differently. Some feelings you may have due to grief: You may feel abandoned or left alone, anxiety, confusion, anger, guilt, fear, rejection, sadness and panic. It is very important to identify, name and talk about different feelings with your parent, teacher, counselor, or a trusted adult. Some behaviors you may notice due to grief: You may experience temper outbursts, panic attacks, immature behavior, lack of interest in usual activities, increased dependency on adults, stomachaches, headaches, silence, withdrawal, over-activity, and taking on adult activities. Some teens try to be the “perfect child.” Again, it is very important to talk to a trusted adult if you or others notice these changes in behavior. Grief or Depression? The symptoms of grief and depression are similar. If you are concerned about how you are adjusting to your loss or wondering if you are depressed…TALK TO SOMEONE! Nurses, doctors, school counselors, psychologists are trained professionals who can help you. Teens grieve differently from adults: Adults often feel sad over an extended period of time, whereas a teen’s grief tends to come and go. Your expression of grief may flare up and then be over quickly as you move on to the next activity. This “rollercoaster” feeling is a normal grief pattern for teens. There are certain tasks that help people adjust to a loss. Below are a few suggestions that may help: 1. Understanding: facing the reality of death • Take the time to talk about death and loss as you experience it in everyday life. • Find someone who will listen – a trusted adult. • Find someone who will listen long after you think you should be moving on. • Ask questions about death and loss. 2. Identify and express feelings • Notice how other people talk about feelings. • Try to identify and express your feelings. • Try an activity: writing about feelings; talking to someone about feelings; arts and crafts; physical activities; singing; walking; meditation. 3. Honoring/Remembering the person who died • Create an ongoing list of “Things I remember about ______.”Put it on the refrigerator. • Write a story, poem, song or prayer for the loved one. • Create a memory book or box with photographs and/or special mementos. • Plan a visit to the cemetery with family or friends. • Plant a tree or plant in honor of the loved one. 4. Going on – not “getting over” • Create a ritual to say good-bye to the loved one and to remember them in the future. • Create a collage of the things that make you happy to be alive. • Talk about your mixed feeling about “going on.” Call Nurse Wendee Winter at 327-3077 for questions. This marks the 10th consecutive year the Buchanan ‘A’ Band has represented the Central Valley in a field of some of the best high school big bands in the United States. The band has been a winner 3 times and has played at the Monterey Jazz Festival in 2008, and 2014. In 2009 the band was the overall winner and played the historic main stage at the Monterey Jazz Festival. That same stage has featured some of the greatest ever including Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, and even Jimi Hendrix, just to put things into perspective! The Festival now features over 120 back-to-back performances from over 80 groups. This year’s Next Generation Jazz Festival will take place April 8-10 at the Monterey Conference Center Pavilion, and in locations throughout downtown Monterey. The festival will feature the three-time GRAMMY Award-winning drummer, composer and bandleader, Terri Lyne Carrington. 3 Literature Comes to Life for Buchanan Juniors The English 11 students recently had the opportunity to travel to the Dan Pessano Theater at the Performing Arts Center to watch literature come to life. Many of us can look back at our time in high school and remember fondly the sporting events and dances, the friendships and the homework. But there was that one novel we all read that challenged us to think and reflect on life and the American dream. When F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote The Great Gatsby in 1925, he could not have foreseen that his work would become a staple of high school English courses throughout America. This year, the Bear Stage drama program produced the Simon Levy adaptation of the novel for their spring show. Through a highly coordinated effort by the English teachers, the attendance office, transportation, campus catering, and the Bear Stage performers and production staff, students in English 11 and AP Composition were able to attend special performances of The Great Gatsby. Ms. Abigail Paxton, the drama director for Buchanan High School, organized her students to perform four additional shows that mesmerized the audience. Students watched as the words of F. Scott Fitzgerald rolled off the lips of Jay Gatsby and Tom Buchanan as performed by Leif Bramer and Dayne Sorensen, drawing them into the moving scenes of societal troubles and disturbing reality of the American dream during the time of prohibition. Music from the period, as designed by student Nicholas Crespin, surrounded students as they watched spirited dancing routines by the ensemble in period appropriate costumes that captured the essence of American Jazz and a world of malleable prosperity. Hailey Ernst, as Daisy Buchanan, Natalie Nielsen, as Jordan Baker, and Gianna Console, as Myrtle, brought three of the most well-known fictional female characters into the spotlight with their incredible performances. But it was Jared Serpa who performed the role of Nick Carraway who drew the elements of the story together as he narrated the events and became the voice of the author cautioning the reader and audience about the dangers of the American dream. The four performances were a remarkable display of the creativity of our Buchanan students and the collaborative efforts of our educational team to make learning relevant and accessible. As students left the performances they were amazed by the quality of the production by their peers and gained a new appreciation for a classic piece of American literature. Certainly, The Great Gatsby is a novel that has left an impression on the many students who have read it through the years. But this year it became more than a novel, it became an extension of who we are as a society and how we continue to pursue the American dream with newfound wisdom gained through our shared experiences. Buchanan Bird Brains Building Season After the reveal of our new game for the season, the Buchanan High School robotics team, the Bird Brains, have been hard at work prototyping, designing, and building mechanisms for our robot. With all of our members trained and ready, the Bird Brains have been powering through our season, working late nights at the Energy Academy. The first week of build season, the Bird Brains brainstormed ideas for the robot. We first outlined the main goals for the robot and designed a drive base to withstand the demands of this year’s field. While the Computer Aided Design team, or CAD, worked hard on the designs, the rest of the team assembled the field elements. Next, the Bird Brains finished building the field elements and sent out robot parts for manufacturing. The CAD team also designed parts for the shooter and intake and sent them out to the manufacturer. Team sponsor, Harris Manufacturing, delivered the drive base parts during the third week of the season, and after assembly, we crossed our first obstacle! We then started working on parts for the intake and got the parts and pieces for the electronics board. As the fourth week approached, we finished the electrical components for DOC XII, our competition robot. Soon we will bag up the robot and wait for competitions. While waiting, we will create a robot that is identical to DOC to practice with. The Bird Brains first competition, the Central Valley Regional, takes place on March 11-13 and is located at Madera South High School. We would love to have Bear Nation come out to support us at this local event! We will also attend the Sacramento Regional at UC Davis (March 24-26). The team will soon be hosting our 9th Annual open house event to reveal our completed competition robot to the whole community. This event is free for anyone to join and will include a silent auction, raffle, and a chili cook-off. The event will take place on February 21 at the Buchanan High School MPR. Feel free to come join us, we are extremely excited to show off our new robot!
