Juniors:
The American Kennel Club Awards the
2013 Junior Scholarships
New York, NY Nineteen outstanding students from 14 states have been awarded American Kennel
Club® (AKC®) Junior Scholarships for 2013. The scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $2,000 are
offered annually to high school, college and graduate school students.
This years scholarship recipients have distinguished themselves through their commitment to
academics, their dogs and participation in AKC events and clubs, said Mari-Beth O’Neill, AVP of Sport
Services. It’s wonderful to be able to reward the accomplishments and the enthusiasm of the young
people in our sport through the AKC Junior Scholarship program. We wish them well as they complete
their education and move onward to even greater success in their careers and the dog world.
Applicants were evaluated based on academic history and involvement in the sport of purebred dogs
with special consideration for those who were active in AKC clubs and events. In addition, applicants
were required to submit an essay describing their future involvement in purebred dogs and with the AKC.
The 19 recipients represent a cross section of the fancy today, with participation in many different AKC
events. Students range from second and third generation exhibitors to those who found their way to their
first dog events by chance.
Their accomplishments include achieving conformation, agility, obedience, AKC Rally®, tracking, hunt
test and therapy dog titles on their dogs, qualifying for the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship Junior
Showmanship Competition, becoming a Junior Showmanship judge, competing at the AKC National
Agility Championship, winning first place and a Gold Medal at the FCI Agility World Championships, and
becoming Honor Society members, Dean’s Lists members and Class Valedictorians. Future aspirations of

Dear valued CERF client,
As you may already know, OFA’s new registry went live on November 1st. CERF is
NOT affiliated with their new system, nor have we partnered with them or been
acquired by OFA. There is no “transition plan” in place. CERF and OFA are two
different systems, and we are now competing for your valued business.

CERF will continue to operate independently as we have done in the past.
We’re not planning on closing the doors anytime soon. We have the longest
history and greatest experience with operating an established canine eye
registration database.
You still have the right to use a CERF form and submit your data to CERF, if you
so choose. I sincerely hope that you continue to do so. If you sign an OFA
“release form”, they will attempt to add your information into the new, unproven
OFA registry. It will NOT be added to CERF if you sign this form. There is no
“combined registry” or “transition” from one registry to the other.
I urge you to request an original CERF form, make your check payable to CERF,
and avoid signing any type of “release form” from OFA.
If you are given an OFA form in place of a CERF form and your intent is still to use
CERF, you may still send in that form for registration into the CERF registration and
statistical database. Please note on the form that you wish to add the registration
paperwork to CERF’s database and make the payment payable to CERF. Any
OFA forms received by CERF with payment to OFA will be returned back to the
owner.
CERF has not changed any procedures on our part. We still continue to send a
weekly submission to OFA so our breeders can qualify for their CHIC number.
CERF is now accepting forms via email and fax for your added convenience.
Please contact CERF and let us know your email address to facilitate future
communications.
If you have any suggestions for how we can serve you better, please feel free
to contact me at any time. Thank you for your continued support of CERF.
Check us out on Face Book and visit our website often for any further updates.
Sincerely,
Robert Malinowski, DVM, MA, PhD

THE FACTS THE TODAY SHOW DIDN'T TELL YOU
(Wednesday, May 01, 2013)
The AKC is extremely disappointed that The Today Show was given all of the information below but chose not to
include any of it in their segment this morning. We met with the producers for an hour prior to the taped interview which also lasted nearly an hour – and we provided them with supporting documentation, and they chose only to
include less than 1 minute of airtime for AKC. They disregarded important facts that should have been told. In fact, we
requested to receive a copy of the tape of the entire, unedited interview with Jeff Rossen so that we could show you all of
the information we gave them, but their lawyers refused to provide the footage to us. Here are some top facts that The
Today Show didn’t tell you:
1. They didn’t tell you that no other organization does more to protect dogs than the AKC and that
“being the dog’s champion” means, among other things, donating more than $24 million to canine health
research, conducting kennel inspections, and offering more educational programs for responsible dog
owners than any other organization.
2. They didn’t tell you that when an AKC inspector finds substandard kennel conditions they must
immediately report it to the appropriate federal, state and local authorities to take action.
3. They didn’t tell you that, in many instances, the highly publicized raids for which animal rights groups
take credit in the media have come about as a direct result of AKC's reporting to law enforcement.
4. They didn’t tell you that, as we explained to Jeff Rossen and his producers numerous times, there are no
“AKC Registered Operations” or “AKC Registered Breeders” and that breeders use AKC services
voluntarily.
5. They didn’t tell you that less than 5% of AKC’s registration revenue comes from commercial
breeders or that the AKC is a not-for-profit organization whose total revenues are less than the total
marketing budget of the HSUS.
6. They didn’t tell you that AKC saw substandard breeders leave the registry in droves in the mid1990's when we instituted an inspections program. We did it anyway, even though it affected our
bottom line negatively, because it was the right thing to do for dogs. And, more breeders left when we
began DNA testing.
7. They didn’t tell you that when AKC has concerns with legislation, it publicly puts legislative alerts on its
website where anyone can learn about how a bill may potentially affect responsible breeders and dog
owners’ rights and not do anything to protect dogs.
8. They didn’t tell you that AKC works to ensure the enforcement of cruelty and neglect laws, as well as
the provisions of the federal Animal Welfare Act. As a result, AKC has a productive working relationship
with local animal controls, state and local law enforcement, state departments of agriculture throughout
the country, as well as the USDA.
9. They didn’t tell you that AKC is well respected by lawmakers who consider us credible experts on dog
issues, and rely on our thoughtful and considered advice when it comes to legislation that will impact dogs
and their breeders and owners.
10. They didn’t tell you that the purebred rescue groups they referenced are actually AKC breed parent club
groups and affiliates that make up the largest dog rescue group network in the country.
11. They didn’t tell you that The Today Show’s Natalie Morales made a TV public service
announcement in conjunction with the Ad Council and the HSUS.
Please send your comments directly to the Producer of the Today Show Don Nash [email protected] and the
President of NBC News Phil Griffin [email protected].
Watch the segment on the Today Show website and then go to Rossen Reports and Today.com and NBCNews.com to
post your comments in support of AKC and all the responsible dog owners and breeders in this country.
