Fairway Vinyl Railing meets or exceeds ASTM F964-02 and is approved to meet Boca Building Code Section 1615.8, IBC Section 1607.7.1 and IRC Section R316, requirements pertaining to railing, in accordance with ICC Evaluation Report 22-33. Always use safety equipment when installing our maintenance-free railing. Step 2 Mounting Surface Preparation (see Photo Assist page for examples) Install and prepare all mounting surfaces and posts to which your new maintenance-free railing will be installed. We suggest covering wood posts with our matching-color vinyl post sleeves or wraps. Finish with one of our many styles of post caps and base trim rings. Step 3 a) Bottom Rail & Bracket Preparation Determine the level placement of bottom rail. This should be no more than 4" and no less than 2½" for 36" high railing and no greater than 2" for 42" high railing. (2½" or less use a Universal post trim ring.) Make a pencil mark at the bottom of the lower rail on the post. Measure up 3/8" above previous mark, then square and center the bottom of the black mounting bracket. Mark screw holes in the four (4) corners of the bracket and then pre-drill four (4) 5/32" holes. Screw the bracket base into place with four (4) #12 x 1¼" pan head screws. Repeat on opposite post. After the bottom black mounting bracket is in place, measure from bottom of bracket up and mark with pencil. Please use the following measurements in accordance with product style and height: 36" Standard Rail = 31¾" • 36" Contour Rail = 31¼" • 42" Standard Rail = 38" • 42" Contour Rail = 37½" This will be the mounting mark for the bottom of the top bracket. Square and center the top black mounting bracket on mark and pre-drill four (4) 5/32" holes. Screw into place using four (4) #10 x 1¼" for Standard Railing or four (4) #10 x 1½" pan head screws for Contour Railing. Repeat on opposite post. Cut bottom rail to length. Measure span between the inside black mounting brackets for bottom rail. (Make sure you have equal and maximum amount of spacing between baluster and post on each end.) Cut rail squarely with a power miter box or hacksaw. You may cut vinyl and aluminum insert at same time. (See saw blade manufacturer’s specs for proper blade.) b) c) Step 4 a) b) Step 5 a) b) c) Mounting Bottom Rail With bottom rail cut to length, slide bracket trim ring onto each end of rail, flat side towards end, facing post. Set rail into place and align bottom rail with level placement mark from Step 3b. With the bottom rail set in place, use the #10 x 1" self-tapping pan head screw through one of the holes along the side of the black mounting bracket through the rail and into the aluminum insert. Only one (1) screw per side is needed. Slide trim ring onto black mounting bracket. Installing Balusters & Top Rail Measure distance from bracket to bracket where top rail will mount. Cut top rail to length to match bottom rail. If post is plumb, top rail should be same length as bottom rail. Make sure distance from post to baluster is the same both top and bottom. Place a baluster in each hole. Slide bracket trim ring on both ends of top rail (flat side towards end of rail). From one end, begin to insert top of balusters into corresponding pocket holes. Once all balusters are in place, the top rail will rest in the black mounting bracket. Using a #10 x 1" self-tapping pan head screw, align rail and the black mounting bracket appropriately and mount screw into the bracket holes provided, then through the side of the rail and into the aluminum insert. One (1) screw per side is needed. Make sure all four (4) bracket trim ring covers are snapped over black mounting brackets. NOTE: If ring will not snap on black mounting plate, make sure mounting screws are not over-tightened. Step 6 Cutting Vinyl Post Sleeve to Height After your railing is installed, you may need to trim the top of the vinyl post sleeves before installing post caps. We recommend measuring up 2½" to 3½" from the top of the mounting bracket trim cover and making a pencil mark prior to cutting. NOTE: Finished post height with post cap may be adjusted for personal preference and appearance. Once all marks are satisfactory, cut the vinyl sleeve using a hand or power saw. (Be sure to cut top of post square.) You are now ready to install your post cap. Apply a small amount of PVC glue or silicone caulk to the inside lip of the cap and mount in place. Step 7 Cleanup Your job is now complete. If your railing has any loose dirt on it from the installation, simply hose it off or wipe with a soft cloth. To remove any stubborn dirt or stains use Fairway Vinyl Cleaner and #0000 steel wool. see photo assist > [[[JEMV[E]ZMR]PGSQ Standard & Contour Vinyl Railing LEVEL Installation Instructions Step 2 Step 3a Step 3a Step 3b Step 3b Step 3c Step 3c Step 4a Step 4b Step 5a Step 5a Step 5b Step 6 Step 6 [[[JEMV[E]ZMR]PGSQ Standard & Contour Vinyl Railing STAIR Installation Instructions (Part 1) It is the responsibility of the installer to meet or exceed all code and safety requirements, and to obtain all required building permits. Always use safety equipment when installing our maintenance-free railing. Step 2 Mounting Surface Preparation (See Rise/Run for proper angle) Install and prepare all mounting surfaces and posts to which your new maintenance-free railing will be mounted. We suggest covering wood posts with our matching-color vinyl post sleeves or wraps. Finish with one of our many styles of post caps and base trim rings. Step 3 a) Bottom Rail Preparation With posts and mounting surfaces prepared, you are now ready to mark and cut bottom rail to length. First, place the bottom rail on the deck surface and the other end on the last stair tread nosing. (Baluster pockets up.) Next, you need to check the distance from the mounting surface to the first baluster. Make sure you have maximum and equal distance at both ends of the bottom rail. With the bottom rail set in the proper location, make a vertical pencil mark on the inside of the mounting surface where the post and rail meet. With bottom rail marked, deduct ¼" from each rail end to allow for black mounting bracket. You may cut both aluminum and vinyl at the same time with a power miter box or hack saw. (See saw blade manufacturer’s specs for proper blade.) b) c) Step 4 a) b) c) d) Step 5 a) b) c) d) e) Mounting Bottom Rail, Bracket & Top Rail Preparation With bottom rail cut to length, slide the black mounting brackets onto the ends of the bottom rail and center on end of rail. Set rail with black mounting bracket between posts. Set to proper height off deck and bottom tread nosing and mark the top of the brackets on post. (Check with local building code for height requirements.) Remove the black mounting bracket from the ends of the bottom rail and square and center brackets with the mark on the posts. Mark the screw holes in the four (4) corners of the black mounting bracket. Pre-drill four (4) 5/32" holes. Install black mounting brackets with four (4) #12 x 1¼" pan head screws. With both black mounting brackets screwed to mounting surfaces, slide trim covers on ends of rail, flat side towards mounting surface. (TIP: If pitch is greater than 32° cut along marks on inside of bracket.) Set bottom rail into black mounting brackets making sure rail is centered. (TIP: You may want to cut blocks to proper height for rail to rest on.) Make sure mounting screws are not over-tightened, this may prevent trim covers from properly snapping onto bracket. With bottom rail set in place, you may now install one (1) #10 x 1" selftapping pan head screw into one (1) of the holes along the side of the bracket. Only one (1) screw per side is needed. Insert a baluster into the baluster pocket closest to the post at each end of stair. Set top rail in place over balusters. With top rail in place, measure the distance from baluster to post at bottom rail and adjust the top rail to match. Make vertical pencil mark on top rail where mounting surface and top rail intersect to denote stair angle. (If you wish to adjust the height of the top rail by cutting balusters, you may do so now.) Installing Balusters & Top Rail for “Standard Vinyl Railing” (Skip Step 5 if using Contour Rail.) With top rail marked, deduct ¼" off both ends of top rail. Cut the top rail same as in Step 3. With rail cut to proper length, slide black mounting brackets on each end of rail. With two (2) end balusters inserted in bottom rail, match up with top rail and align top rail in between posts. With top rail in place and black mounting bracket centered on rail ends, mark bracket position on post. With this marked, remove rail and brackets. Square and center black mounting brackets to mounting surface and mark the four (4) screw holes in the corners of bracket. Drill four (4) 5/32" holes, set bracket into place and screw in place with four (4) #12 x 1¼" pan head screws. With black mounting brackets in place, you may now insert your balusters in bottom rail baluster pockets. With balusters in place, slide trim ring covers on each end of top rail, flat side towards mounting surface. Starting at the bottom of stair run, slide top rail into bracket. Insert balusters into baluster pockets as you work upward to top of stair. Continue up to top of stair run. With top rail in place, install four (4) #10 x 1" self-tapping pan head screws in the same manner as Step 4. Make sure all four bracket trim ring covers are snapped over black mounting brackets. NOTE: If ring will not snap on black mounting plate, make sure mounting screws were not over-tightened. Skip to Step 10 continued > [[[JEMV[E]ZMR]PGSQ Standard & Contour Vinyl Railing STAIR Installation Instructions (Part 2) It is the responsibility of the installer to meet or exceed all code and safety requirements, and to obtain all required building permits. These instructions are only a guide and may not address every circumstance. The deck and railing installer should determine and implement appropriate installation techniques for each situation. FAIRWAY Vinyl Systems shall not be held liable for improper or unsafe installations. NOTE: Steps 6-9 "Contour Stair Railing Installations" only. Step 6 Cutting “Contour Top Rails” With both ends of top rail marked, place the bottom (baluster pocket side) against the back stop of the miter box. Match up miter cut with line marked on top rail and cut. You may cut both aluminum and vinyl at the same time. Step 7 a) Cutting “Contour Stair Bracket” With top rail cut to length, measure the distance from the end of rail to the baluster pocket (so mounting bracket will not cover baluster pocket). Mark bottom of bracket with this measurement. Make sure mounting screws are facing towards balusters. Slide bracket onto a piece of scrap contour rail and cut at same angle as top rail. (TIP: Use another bracket to hold railing level in miter box for a correct angle cut.) b) Step 8 a) b) Step 9 Installing “Contour Stair Bracket” & 3/16" S.S. Pins With both brackets cut to match top rail, you will need to install pins. (Pins keep rail from pulling out of bracket under load.) Slide bracket onto top rail and hold flush with end of top rail. With bracket flush with end of top rail, make a mark on both sides of bracket. With top rail marked, remove bracket. Measure from marks toward the end of the top rail ½" and down 1/ 8" from bottom of bead on the side of top rail. Where the lines intersect, drill a 7/32" hole through the vinyl and aluminum (make sure aluminum is flush with vinyl) on both sides of top rail. Slide bracket onto the top rail, insert 3/16" S.S. pin and engage pin into the bracket. Installing Balusters & “Contour Top Rail” With top rail brackets mounted to top rail, install all balusters into bottom rail. Start at the bottom of stair run and one by one insert balusters into the top rail. With balusters inserted in top rail, set rail in place and center on mounting surface. Insert two (2) #10 x 4" pan head screws into bracket. While keeping bracket square and centered on mounting surface, start screw enough to mark mounting surface. Push top rail to one side and pre-drill a 5/32" hole at same angle as mounting screw. Set rail in place and install mounting screws. With screws in place, insert fill plugs (two (2) per bracket) using PVC glue or silicone caulk to hold in place. Step 10 Cutting Vinyl Post Sleeve to Height After your railing is installed, you may need to trim the top of the vinyl post sleeves before installing post caps. Step 11 Cleanup Your job is now complete. If your railing has any loose dirt on it from the installation, simply hose it off or wipe with a soft cloth. To remove any stubborn dirt or stains use Fairway Vinyl Cleaner and #0000 steel wool. [[[JEMV[E]ZMR]PGSQ Masters/Legends Vinyl Balustrade STAIR Installation Guide It is the responsibility of the installer to meet or exceed all code and safety requirements, and to obtain all required building permits. These instructions are only a guide and may not address every circumstance. The deck and railing installer should determine and implement appropriate installation techniques for each situation. FAIRWAY Vinyl Systems shall not be held liable for improper or unsafe installations. Step 1 Safety Precautions Check all local building codes for design load requirements. Fairway Masters Vinyl Balustrade is compliant with Section 4.2 Guardrail System Structural testing of IBCO AC174 (April 2002) Acceptance Criteria for Deck Board Span Ratings and Guardrail Systems (Guard and Handrail). Always use safety equipment. Step 2 Mounting Surface Preparation Make sure all mounting surfaces are plumb. You may use a 54" vinyl sleeve in square or raised panel (Legends also has a Turned Newel). Wood post will need to be built out to match the inside measurements of post sleeve or you may use our Stainless Steel Structural Post. (Structural Post required with Legends Turned Newel Post). NOTE: Base Trim Rings may need to be modified for stair rail. Step 3 Lay Out Bottom Rail With all mounting surfaces prepared, remove bottom rail from carton (Legends Top & Bottom Rails are the same profile) and remove aluminum insert. Rest bottom rail on deck and bottom stair nosing. (See Figure 1.) Make sure distance from baluster to newel is equal on both ends. Make a vertical mark along bottom rail. Step 4 Cut Bottom Rail and Aluminum Inserts With bottom rail marked, deduct ½" off both ends of rail to allow for mounting brackets (see Figure 2). You may cut with a power mitre box or power saw. Next, cut the aluminum insert 3-1/2" shorter than vinyl rail length. Use a power mitre box or power saw (see manufacturer specs for saw blade). Step 5 Step 6 Mark angle of stairs Step 8 Set Top Rail in Place With top rail cut to length and mounting brackets in place, insert all balusters in bottom rail with wide part of turned baluster toward the bottom (see Figure 4). Slide top rail in place, starting at bottom baluster and working your way up to the top baluster. With all balusters in place, screw top mounting brackets in place the same way as bottom mounting brackets (see Step 5). Figure 2 Aluminum Reinforcement Bottom rail with Sleeve Over and mounting bracket Mark angle of stairs Lay Out Top Rail With bottom rail in place, insert one baluster in bottom rail closest to mounting surface. Pulling over to one side, insert baluster in matching hole in top rail (see Figure 3). NOTE: At this time if you wish to adjust the height of your railing, you may do so by cutting even amount of top and bottom baluster (maximum adjustment 5"). (TIP: On steeper pitch stairs, it may be necessary to cut the bottom & top of balusters at same pitch of steps to allow for deeper baluster insertion). Make sure you have equal distance from mounting surface to baluster at top and bottom rail. Make a vertical mark where rail and mounting surface meets (see Step 3). Cut Top Rail and Insert Mounting Brackets Procedure for cutting top rail and installing mounting brackets will be the same as bottom rail. Repeat Steps 3, 4, and 5. Plumb all mounting surfaces before marking rails Deduct 1/2" from mark to allow for mounting bracket Install Mounting Brackets With rail and aluminum insert cut to length, slide Sleeve Over over both ends of bottom rail. Insert mounting bracket in end of bottom rail, hold flush with rail end and adjust so all screw holes are accessible. Slide Sleeve Over forward so it is flush with mounting bracket flange. At middle mounting bracket screw hole, measure over ¾" on Sleeve Over and drill a 1/8" hole through Sleeve Over, rail and mounting bracket (see Figure 5). On one side of both Top and Bottom mounting brackets install one (1) #8 x 1" self-tapping screw with clear plastic cap retainer. Snap cap over screw to cover screw head. NOTE: do not over tighten screw, the retainer may "cup" and the cap will not snap on. Set rail in place between mounting surfaces, center mounting bracket and adjust height. Mark screw holes in mounting bracket and remove from opening. Next, pre-drill six (per bracket) 5/32" holes in center of mark. Set bottom rail in place and install six #12 x 2" SS white head screws through bottom bracket into 5/32" hole. Step 7 Figure 1 Equal & Maximum Distance on both ends of rail Proper Baluster Orientation Figure 3 Figure 4 Figure 5 #8 x 1" self-tapping screw into 1/8" hole Step 9 Install Post Caps With railing screwed in place, you are ready to install post caps. If you need to trim the tops of newel posts you may do this now. To install post caps, apply PVC cement or Silicone Caulk to the inside lip of cap and seat in place. Step 10 Cleanup You may clean up your vinyl railing with a mild household cleaner. For any stubborn stains, use #0000 steel wool and mild household cleaner. NOTE: Depending on the pitch of the steps, it may become necessary to notch out bottom and top rail Sleeve Over if they cover baluster pocket, and top and bottom of baluster if it is in contact with internal stair bracket. It may also be necessary to cut the top and bottom of baluster to match the pitch of the steps to allow for deeper insertion in top and bottom rail. Fairway Railing is manufactured in requirements of ASTM F964-02 and is approved to meet Boca Building Code Section 61 615.8, IBC Section 160.7.7.1 and IRC Section R316, requirements pertaining to railing. Always use safety equipment when installing our maintenance-free rail system. Step 2 Prepare Mounting Surface Install and prepare all mounting surfaces and posts to which your new maintenance-free railing will be installed. We suggest covering wood posts with our matching-color vinyl post sleeves or wraps. Finish with one of our many styles of post caps and base trim rings. Step 3 Mount Bottom Brackets Determine level placement of bottom rail. This should be no greater than 4" and no less than 2½" for 36" high rail. No greater than 2" for 42" high rail (below 2½" use a low profile base trim ring.) Make a pencil mark where rail will be mounted. Measure up 3/8" above previous mark, square and center bottom of black bracket. Mark and pre-drill four 5/32" holes in corners of black mounting bracket. Screw bracket into place with four (4) #12 x 1¼" pan head screws. Step 4 Mount Top Brackets After bottom mounting bracket is in place, measure from bottom of bracket up (36" height: Standard railing 31¾" – Contour railing 31¼" or 42" height: Standard railing 41" - Contour railing 37½") and mark with a pencil. This will be mounting mark for the bottom of the top bracket. Square and center top black mounting bracket and pre-drill four (4) 5/32" holes. Screw into place (on Standard railing use four (4) #12 x 1¼" - Contour railing install four (4) #10 x 2" S.S. pan head screws). Step 5 Cut Rail to Length Measure distance from inside black brackets for bottom rail. Remove top and bottom rail from acrylic glass panel by pulling rail off of acrylic glass panel. Remove aluminum insert from vinyl and measure the distance you need. Measure from one end (left or right) and mark. Peel off and align two (2) of the ¼" x 1" x 2" neoprene pads for acrylic glass panel to rest on. Make sure pads are equal distance from each end (4½" from end of rail). Install middle pad in the center of the rail. Cut the aluminum insert with a hack saw or power saw. Insert the aluminum back into the vinyl rail and trim vinyl rail to the length of the aluminum insert. Repeat this step with the top rail. Step 6 Cutting Acrylic Glass Panel Once top and bottom rails are cut, measure the distance from inside post to inside post and deduct 7½". This will be the width of the acrylic glass panel. Make sure protective covering is still on acrylic glass panel before cutting. From one end (left or right) lay panel on a flat solid surface, mark and cut with a fine tooth blade. After cutting is complete, you may use a file to clean the cut edge of the acrylic glass panel. After acrylic glass panel is cut to length, remove protective covering. You will need to drill and reinstall three 1/8" x ¾" pins. On cut end, measure 2" from top and bottom of acrylic glass panel. Now measure over (from cut edge) 13/16" and mark. This will be the center mark for 1/8" hole. Drill an 1/8" hole and install the 1/8" pins. For the middle pin, center between top and bottom pins and repeat drilling process. Step 7 Mounting Rail to Bracket With top and bottom black brackets installed on mounting surface and top and bottom rails cut to length, you are ready to install railing to black mounting brackets. Set acrylic glass panel in slot of bottom rail, making sure you have an even spacing on both ends of rail. Slide balusters over the ends of acrylic glass panel with 1/8" pins seated inside of baluster. You should have equal distance on both ends from edge of baluster to end of rail. Install top rail same as bottom rail. With even spacing on both ends, insert ¼" vinyl gasket in ¼" slot on both top and bottom rails. Using a rope or nylon strap, wrap around rail section and secure. Slide mounting bracket trim ring covers on ends of railing. Measure the distance from bottom rail to finished deck surface and cut (2) two blocks. With blocks in place, set rail section into brackets. Using #10 x 1" self tapping screw, install one (1) screw per side of mounting bracket (8 screws per section). Slide trim ring over black mounting bracket and snap into place. Step 8 Cleanup Your job is now complete. If your railing has any loose dirt on it from installation, simply hose it off or wipe with a soft cloth. On Vinyl Railing, remove any stubborn dirt or stains using Fairway Vinyl Cleaner or “0000" steel wool. NOTE: Please take caution when cleaning the acrylic glass panel. Some household cleaners contain ingredients that are harmful to the acrylic glass panel. We recommend using a solution of warm water and liquid detergent with a soft cloth for cleaning. [[[JEMV[E]ZMR]PGSQ Secondary Round Vinyl Railing Installation Instructions (1.5" & 2") It is the responsibility of the installer to meet or exceed all code and safety requirements, and to obtain all required building permits. These instructions are only a guide and may not address every circumstance. The deck and railing installer should determine and implement appropriate installation techniques for each situation. FAIRWAY Vinyl Systems shall not be held liable for improper or unsafe installations. Sketch a layout of the new secondary railing in relationship to the existing railing noting the various pieces you will need and where you will need them. Check to see if you have all the pieces that you will need. Determine the height of the railing (35" to 38" to the top, for commercial applications) and check how the height works coming down or up the steps. Establish a place to begin. Usually, that will be an inside corner. Bit Recommendations: Into Post (A, Step 1) Screw #14 x 1½" – Pilot Bit 3/16" – Phillips Bit P3 Into Hand Rail (A, Step 3) Screw #14 x 1-1/14" – Pilot Bit 3/16" – Phillips Bit P3 Into Connector (B, Step 3) Screw #8 x 1" – Pilot Bit 5/32" – SQ2 Bit CORNER A 2" Diameter Shown CORNER B CORNER C CORNER A Measure from the floor to the top of the bracket. Height should be railing height less 2". Mark posts and install brackets. Align elbow so that there is equal distance from one side of the elbow to the existing railing, as with the other side. Make sure that the elbow is flat, drill pilot holes and secure with screws. CORNER B Install elbow using the same instructions as in Corner A. Hand Rail: Measure distance between Corners A and B. Add required pieces to corners using connector. Pump pliers or vise grips can be used to fit connector into the hand rail as well as tapping, as required, with a heavy rubber mallet. Final length may need to be cut for exact fit. Remove Corner B and fit together with handrail. Return Corner B to bracket and secure with screws. NOTE: Wherever two ends of secondary handrail are joined, either to each other or to elbows, tighten the joint by drilling and securing with screws. Don’t forget to use washer and plastic caps with screws. CORNER C Making outside corners is best accomplished using a modified 90° post return. Cut a piece of aluminum that has been removed from scrap handrail to a length of 2". This piece is then inserted into the post return enabling the use of a connector to make the corner. Determine the length to cut the handrail which is joined to the modified post return, by inserting the next piece of railing or elbow into the corner and laying it over the adjacent piece on the other side of the corner. This will establish a mark to cut the railing. Using a connector, join the corner with the railing cut in previous step and secure to the bracket as shown. “P” LOOP INSTALLATION 1. With corner now in place, determine the height of the in-line brackets on a step railing installation by holding a piece of railing in line with the elbow and parallel to the primary railing. Typically, the secondary railing will be below the level of the primary railing. 2. Install in-line brackets with screws, putting brackets on every post. Continue until ground level post is reached. At this point railing will be terminated in one of a number of ways: either by end capping a straight rail, end capping an elbow, or by using the “P” loop return to meet certain municipal requirements. These instructions are only a guide and may not address every circumstance. The deck and railing installer should determine and implement appropriate installation techniques for each situation. KIT CONTENTS 1 - VINYL PORCH POST FAIRWAY Vinyl Systems shall not be held liable for improper or unsafe installations. Step 1 a) Check Local Code Requirements Before you begin, check with your local building code official or structural engineer to determine the quantity and spacing needed and the vertical load requirements for your overhead structure and climate zone. Step 2 a) Porch Preparation Install suitable temporary supports to the overhead structure to carry the load during installation of the Vinyl Porch Post. Using a level and string line, level the porch roof beam. (See Fig 1a) b) Step 3 a) b) c) Determine Center Lines & Height Measurement (See Fig 1b) With the roof beam level, determine center-lines where post(s) will mount to the roof beam. Use a plumb bob to transfer the center-line mark from the roof beam onto the porch deck. Measure the distance from the bottom of roof beam to the finished porch surface. Step 4 Cutting Porch Post With the height measurement obtained in Step 3, deduct 3/8". Cut the post to this calculated length. You may cut the porch post vinyl and aluminum at the same time using a fine tooth blade such as a hacksaw. Caution: We recommend you do not lay the post on a rough surface when cutting or measuring. We suggest the use of the cardboard it was received in to protect the surface from damage. NOTE: Plan ahead prior to cutting the porch post to length. If you are using porch railing, verify your railing height and ensure that once the post is cut to length, you have sufficient length of the square portion of the shaped porch post to mount the top railing bracket. The shaped porch posts are designed to support a 42" railing installation out of the box. If you are installing a railing that is 36" in height, you would typically cut up to 4" from the bottom of the porch post with the balance being cut from the top. Step 5 a) Mounting Plates & Porch Post Installation With the post cut to length, insert mounting plates in ends of porch post, slide the porch post into place and align with center-line marks from Step 3. Do not apply the load of the overhead structure at this time. (See Fig 1c) With the porch post set in place, rotate the porch post 45º to expose the mounting holes in the corners of the mounting plates. Screw the mounting plates to porch deck and roof beam. NOTE: Four (4) screws per mounting plate should be used. For masonry surface applications, use supplied Tapcon screws. (See Fig 2) With mounting plates secured to the beam and deck, rotate the porch post 45º so the porch post covers the mounting plates. Transfer the load from the temporary supports onto the newly positioned and installed porch post. Measure and mark 3/4" from both mounting plates on two opposite center-faces of the post (right and left side). Pre-drill four (4) 11/64" holes and install the (matching) colored head screws through the porch posts and both the top and bottom mounting plates. (See Fig 3) NOTE: Installation of the screws will insure the porch posts do not rotate on the mounting plates and provides standard resistance to wind up-lift. To insure maximum uplift resistance, we recommend our Fairway Storm Kit Plate System. Always check your local building code requirements. b) c) Step 6 Cleanup Your job is complete. You may clean up any dirt or marks with a hose and soft cloth. For any stubborn stains, use Fairway Cleaner and #0000 steel wool. 2 - MOUNTING PLATES 8 - #10 x 1½" SCREWS 4 - COLORED SCREWS 4 - 1¾" TAPCON SCREWS MOUNTING TO WOOD: Install four (4) ea. per bracket (top and bottom) #10 x 1½" Stainless Steel Flat Head Screws. These instructions are only a guide and may not address every circumstance. The deck and railing installer should determine and implement appropriate installation techniques for each situation. FAIRWAY Vinyl Systems shall not be held liable for improper or unsafe installations. NOTE: Before installing column, you will need to modify the height of the base trim to allow proper clearance between bottom rail and finished deck. Typically, the center of the carrying beam is determined along with the location of each post on that line. Mark the location of the center of each post. Using a “plumb bob”, determine the center of the post at the floor level and mark that spot. With all post centers marked, snap a line the length of the project through the center marks. Step 2 Using the template that is provided with the post trim, mark the center as established from the previous step. Align the centering marks of the template with the project center line from the previous step. Mark the position of the holes for the bottom bracket and the trim locator pins (bottom side of trim ring). Likewise, mark the position of the top bracket mounting holes (there are no locator pins on the top). Care in establishing the top and bottom bracket locations will enable the post to be installed plumb. This is especially important when installing tapered columns. [[[JEMV[E]ZMR]PGSQ continued > Vinyl Round Column Installation Instructions (Part 2) It is the responsibility of the installer to meet or exceed all code and safety requirements, and to obtain all required building permits. These instructions are only a guide and may not address every circumstance. The deck and railing installer should determine and implement appropriate installation techniques for each situation. FAIRWAY Vinyl Systems shall not be held liable for improper or unsafe installations. Step 3 Using a hammer drill, pre-drill ¼" holes for the bottom bracket at an angle that will be convenient to drive the screws into the concrete when the post assembly is placed (see Step 11). Drill ½" holes, straight into the concrete, for the trim locator pins. Typically it is not necessary to predrill the top bracket holes. However, to ensure the most correct placement of the bracket, you may wish to provide pilot holes. Step 4 If adjusting the length of the post is required, slide the aluminum insert and spacers out of the post from the base (straight) end. Measure and mark the amount to be removed and cut the aluminum insert with a fine tooth carbide blade on a chop saw. Step 5 Step 8 Step 11 Slide the assembly into position aligning the brackets with the holes drilled in Step 2. Using a hammer drill, drive the Tapcon screws into the concrete deck. Likewise, affix the top bracket to the carrying beam. Step 12 Spacers need to be fixed in place using #8 x 2" self-drilling screws. Slide inner pipe with spacer into column. If a railing system is being installed with the lower rail at 2" off of the deck, the base trim ring will need to be cut to provide room for the lower rail mounting bracket. See the instructions included with the trim. Step 9 Using a “T” square, mark the outer post (bottom straight end only). In areas where uplift from high winds is considered a problem, pre-drill ¼" holes through the column and bracket ears at the position of the bracket mounting tabs into the post approximately 1" from the bottom and 1" from the top. Step 13 Step 6 Slide the mid-trim ring onto the post, as shown. 8" and 10" tapered posts have an offset on which the ring rests. The location of the rings for straight posts should be predetermined (typically, 8" from the top on the 8" post) and marked. Step 10 Drive #14 x 4" screws into the post securing the post to the bracket top and bottom. Placement of the top and bottom trim will hide the screws (2 screws per bracket). Remove the unwanted amount using a saber saw with a fine tooth blade. Step 7 Step 14 With the rings properly positioned on the 8" straight post, drive #8 x 2" self-drilling screws into the post through the holes in the top of the ring, as shown. Slide the top and bottom trim over the post, followed by the top and bottom mounting brackets. Before pre-assembling column, you must determine the placement of the spacers. Measure from the bottom of the aluminum insert (34" for 36" high railing and 40" for 42" high railing). This will be the placement of the bottom of the aluminum insert spacer. Top trim is now fixed to the carrying beam as shown using #8 x 2" self-drilling screws. Determine property boundary lines. Check with utility company before digging. Step 2 a) b) c) Fence Layout With string and stakes, lay out perimeter of fence to be installed. Mark post holes with pins or paint. The space from inside of post to inside of post will be 69". 4" x 4" post needs a 8" diameter hole and a 5" x 5" post needs a 10" diameter hole. Drill or dig the holes, 30" to 36" deep, depending on the frost line in your area. Step 3 a) Set Fence Posts With all post holes ready, start with a end or corner post. Set post in hole and back-fill 4" to 6" of fine gravel and tamp enough to keep post steady. Square post with line and plumb. Bottom rail holes in post should be set no greater than 2" off of ground. With first post set in place, measure over (from bottom of post) 69" from inside of post to inside of second post. Set second post in place, square with line and plumb. Repeat until all posts are set. NOTE: You may insert bottom rails while setting post to insure that the width between post are correct. If so, be sure to tape the ends of rail going into the corners and end post. With all posts set in place, double check your measurements (69" inside face to inside face) from post to post. With all posts square and plumb, fill post holes with concrete. b) c) d) Step 4 a) b) Installing Bottom Rails With all posts concreted in place, start at the corner or end post. Take a bottom rail (tape ends of rail going into corner and end post) with picket pockets facing up and insert the crimped end of rail into the bottom routed hole of the post. (Bottom rail is routed on top of rail only.) Push bottom rail into post far enough to clear second post. Then pull rail forward and snap into second post. With all bottom rails snapped in place, check post for square and plumb. Step 5 Installing Top Rails The top rail is routed both top and bottom. The bottom side of the top rail has a wider slot to allow for fencing to be installed at a slight incline. NOTE: Make sure the wider slot is facing down! Insert top rail same as bottom rail. Step 6 Installing Pickets 3’ Level Fencing: With top rail in place (wide slot facing down), you are ready to install pickets. First, note that one end of the picket is crimped. This end will insert into the bottom rail. Start picket, crimped end first, through the top rail and insert into bottom rail. 4’ Scalloped Fencing: With top rail in place (wide slot facing down) you are ready to install pickets. First, note that one end of picket is crimped. This end will insert into the bottom rail. First lay pickets out and note the different lengths. The longest pickets will go in the picket pocket closest to fence post. Start from one end and work towards center. Place picket, crimped end first, through top rail and insert into bottom rail. (See picture above for picket layout.) Step 7 Installing Picket Caps With all pickets in place, you are ready to install picket caps. You will note that the sides of the caps are spring loaded and no cement will be needed. Line the cap up with the inside of picket and push into place. Step 8 Installing Post Caps With all caps in place, clean top of fence posts and inside of post caps with a damp cloth. Apply a small amount of PVC glue or silicone caulk to inside of cap where it comes in contact with fence post. Push in place and let dry. Step 9 Cleanup Your job is complete. You may clean up any dirt or marks with a hose and soft cloth. For any stubborn stains, use Fairway Cleaner and #0000 steel wool. Step 10 Gate Mounting Recommendation With all posts square and plumb, it is recommended you add additional support to the gate mounting posts. Concrete and rebar are suggested for added strength. Cut (2) two ½" rebar 6" shorter than post. Fill inside of post about 1/3 full of concrete and insert rebar in opposite corners of post. Fill with concrete to rebar height. Tamp concrete with a round rod throughout process to make sure there are no voids in cavity of post. Allow to set prior to gate installation or use.
