Construction of the $9.5 million
Franklin D. Roosevelt Senior High
School in Greenbelt is moving on
schedule and about 17% of the work
has been completed. Most of the
footings have been poured, and
work Is progressing on the building's exterior walls. . Sle.ted for
_opening in-19'l'5-76,--the school-willhave a capacity of 2400 students.
Roy Parker, Director of Plant
PlaDning and Construction, tOld the
. News Review that there have been
no signlfi~ant problems. Erosion
control measures have been accomplisl)ed, and grass should soon be
sprouting on the baseball fiekl adjacent to Greenbelt Road and on
the east slope of the parking Jot
along Hanover Parkway. An earlier
concern about the availability of
structural steel is no longer a prob-'
lem. There is enough material to
. complete the structure.

or building one in the
basement? There's an excellent ·
reason not to cut into your walls·
and existing ductwork It'would
only steal heat from the rest of the
house and still might not heat
your new room adequately. Instead,
PEPCO recommends a couple of
electric heating systems especially
suited to a new room.
Consider first the electric
baseboard heating system. Compact
units, available in many different
lengths, fit along the outside walls
on the floor. They generate heat
and transfer it to the living area
.by radiation and convection. All it
takes is a little wiring and
installation of the units themselves.
You get-temperature control right
in the room, and you can save
money by simply turning off the
heat when the room

is not in use.

Al~ough fuel oil costS are uncertain, th'1 proposdd budget as of now
calls for expenditures of $2,943,000
· In 197,, Of tills amount, $27,000
would come from reserves, and
· $241,000 from income other than
monthly charges, leaving $2,875,000
to be raised threugh monthly charges.
The latter tl.gure represents an
Increase of $289,000 from the cur_ _ _ l't!Ut year's monthly chargesof
$2,388,000. In terms of Individual
bol:li.eowners,-the- average Increase
would be 12.1 percent, a little more
for frame homeowners, a little less
for brick homeowners.
If amortization payments are
subtracted_out, the increase In op81'atlng charges would be 14.6 percent (13.7% for brick, 111.• % for
frame).
Souroos of Income
Income other than from monthly
charges Is expected to be up some
$26,000 ·In 1974. Higher Interest
rates on reserves are expected to
yield $11,000 more. Charges to mem• bers for services not covered by
the contract and charges to the
GDC apartments for services rendered by the corporation are expected to be UJ>"by $6,000. This Is due
to Increasing the fees charged for
eervlces (from $9 to $10 per hour,
