A rich territory to share and preserve for our children
The environmental value of such a park is enhanced by the conservation of a great area in its entirety. If fragmented, it will lose
its value as a natural habitat for many species.
The findings of the botanist André Sabourin (free translation):
• “ In twenty years of professional experience in field botany, I have rarely
surveyed comparable territories so rich in rare plants or plants of interest.
It is therefore a forest or ecosystem of a Sanctuary for Species
at Risk* status ”.
• “ The Greenbelt should be designated as a conservation area, protected
by the zoning plans of the towns of Châteauguay and Lery ”.
• “ In summary, as these plant communities are close from one another and
sometimes connected, we can say that the Châteauguay-Lery Greenbelt
is an exceptional forest ecosystem “.
* This comprehensive inventory is available for consultation

A recognized economic value
Outdoor enthusiasts:
An annual spending of 1, 3 billion dollars!
Only 10% of nature trails are in the Montreal area, yet 50% of the
population of Quebec resides in this area.
The Parc du Mont Saint-Bruno, of comparable size (790 hectares), welcomes
750 000 visitors per year.
While being near Montreal, we have so much to offer:
• 125 species of birds observed, including 71 breeding species in the
unprotected parts of the Greenbelt.
• Several species of birds using the forest as a breeding site or staging area.
• A mature hemlock grove occupying a rare sandy deposit. This stand
represents a suitable winter shelter for the White-tailed Deer and a refuge
for birds of prey.
• A large number of tree species of great interest such as the hornbeam
(ironwood), the Shagbark Hickory, the Bitternut hickory and the Butternut.

THE CHATEAUGUAY-LÉRY GREENBELT
Investment for an Entire Community
Only 1% of southern Quebec is protected from development.
Protection of natural areas will help strengthen the positive image of the
Roussillon RCM and:
• will contribute in the enhancement of the real estate value of houses
(think about the value of houses adjacent to Parc Saint-Bruno for example),
• will become a regional tourism and recreation asset,
• will have significant benefits on the quality of drinking water in Chateauguay,
Mercier, Léry and Sainte-Martine.
Should we not seize the opportunity presented to us? Are we to entrust
our valuable natural heritage to property developers? What are our
options and what resources can we develop?
Because nothing grows on concrete!
Dear neighbours, as concerned citizens believing in the green future of
our town and our region, we ask our Mayor, Mr Yvon Mailhot, and our
City Councillors to act definitely in favour of the total conservation of
the Chateauguay-Léry green corridor.
Come hear their responses to you! It’s a rendezvous at the
next City Council on June 14 at 8pm at the Léry City Hall.
For the future of our town, and the benefit of our children...
