Old Greenbelt Theatre Grand Opening Events begin Friday, May 29th
with A 1938 Evening at the Pictures
Greenbelt, MD – May 20, 2015
Old Greenbelt Theatre, a historic one-screen movie theatre in Greenbelt, Maryland, will
celebrate its Grand Reopening on Friday, May 29th after a 10-month renovation. The
celebration will continue through the weekend with special events.
Grand Opening events begin on Friday night with A 1938 Evening at the Pictures, screening
the Theatre’s first film, Little Miss Broadway (1938) starring Shirley Temple. Admission
includes popcorn and will reflect 1938 prices, with 50 cents for adults and 25 cents for
children. Entertainment activities will begin in Roosevelt Center at 6pm, with the box office
opening at 7:30pm and the program commencing at 8pm. Attendees are encouraged to
wear vintage accessories.
Saturday, May 30th will include circa 1938 children’s cartoons and a double feature of The
Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) starring Errol Flynn and Bringing Up Baby (1938) starring
Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn. On Sunday, May 31st, the Theatre will show The City,
a 1938 documentary featuring Greenbelt and an encore performance of Little Miss
Broadway with open captions.
The Theatre was recently renovated by The City of Greenbelt. The project was completed
by GTM Architects, Gardiner & Gardiner Contracting, EHT Traceries, and Cardinal Sound &
Motion Picture Systems, with funding provided in part by Partners in Preservation, a joint
grant program of American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, The
Maryland Historical Trust, and private donors. The renovation includes new digital projection
equipment, 35mm projectors, a restored lobby and ticket booth, restroom improvements,
and an enhanced concession area. Community leaders will be present for the celebration.
Friends of the Greenbelt Theatre was awarded a contract by the City of Greenbelt earlier
this year to operate the Old Greenbelt Theatre as a non-profit community movie theatre. Old
Greenbelt Theatre, ca. 1938, is at the center of the National Historic Landmark district of
Old Greenbelt, significant for its history as a planned community and a favorite project of
President Franklin D. and Eleanor Roosevelt.
