Australia is the world's smallest continent and the
largest island in the world. The people in
Australia are called Aussies.

Only 1 % of the people of Australia live in the
Northern Territory.
The Western Territory is the biggest part of

playing basketball and playing football.

Ayers Rock (Uluru)
The English name for Uluru is Ayers
Rock. The Aborigines call it Uluru.
Uluru is a big island mountain, in the
middle of the desert south-west of
Alice Springs. Uluru is 3 km long and 2
km wide. Uluru is 863 m high and so
the biggest island mountain in the
world. The neighbouring mountain from
Uluru is the Kata Tjuta. They are both
500 million years old.
The Great Barrier Reef
The Great Barrier Reef is the biggest coral reef in
the world. The Great Barrier Reef is one of the seven
world wonders. On July 11th, 1770 the British sailor
James Cook discovered the Great Barrier Reef. The
Great Barrier Reef is 18 to 20 million years old. About
2 million tourists come to the Great Barrier Reef each
year. In 2003 tourists spent four billion Australian
dollars.
The Sydney Opera House
The Sydney Opera House is a famous
building from the 20th century and the
landmark of Sydney. It is a draft from
the architect John Utzon. The Opera
House has 5532 seats. The Concert Hall
has 2679 seats, the Opera Theatre has
1547 seats, the Drama Theatre has 544
seats, the Playhouse has 398 seats and
the Studio Theatre has 364 seats. The
Opera House is 183 m long and 118 m wide.
The Harbour Bridge
The Harbour Bridge opened on March 19th, 1932.
It unites the north and south coast of Sydney.
The Harbour Bridge is the second landmark of
Sydney. The Harbour Bridge is 1147 m long and
so one of the longest bridges in the world.

Canberra
The capital of Australia is Canberra and it is the eighth largest city in Australia.
Canberra is the biggest city in central Australia
and it is in the Australian Capital Territory.
Canberra is 268 km south-east of Sydney and
669 km north of Melbourne. Canberra is a
favourite place for tourists because there are
many things to see, such as:- the old Parliament
Building, the National Library, the National Zoo
and Aquarium, the Black Mountain, the
Australian National Botanic Gardens, Mount
Ainslie, the National Dinosaur Museum, the
National Museum, the Australian War Memorial
and Australians favourite sport rugby.
Sydney
Sydney is the largest city in Australia. Sydney
is also the city with the largest population.
There are 3,64million people living in Sydney.
Sydney is the capital of New South Wales.
Sydney was founded on 26thJanuary 1788. In
the centre of Sydney there are 156,571
inhabitants. There are many universities and
museums in Sydney. Port Jackson is the name
of the harbour in Sydney and it is the biggest
natural harbour in the world. One sight of
Sydney is the Sydney Opera House from the architect John Utzon. It was built
in 1959. It is the landmark of Sydney. In Sydney there are also many museums:
the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Australian Museum and Hyde Park
Barracks. Other sights in Sydney are the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Sydney
Tower, the Queen Victoria Buliding, Fort
Denison, the Cadman's and the Kirribilli House.
The Royal Botanic Gardens is the biggest
National Park in Sydney. On the east bank of
Lavender Bay is the Launa Park. The Launa Park
is a leisure centre, but the Launa Park is only
open on holidays because people complain about
the noise. The most famous sport in Sydney is
rugby. Because of all these things Sydney is a popular place for tourists.

Melbourne
Melbourne is the capital of Victoria in Australia. There are 3,37million people
living in Melbourne. Melbourne is the second largest city in Australia. Melbourne
was named after the Premier Minister Lord
Melbourne in 1837. In the centre of
Melbourne there are 71,380 inhabitants. In
Melbourne there are many immigrants:
Chinese, British, Greek, Italian, Irish and
Croatian. Melbourne was voted in the years
2002, 2004 and 2005 the most popular city
to live in, in the world. Melbourne has two
big universities: the University of Melbourne
and the Monash University. These
universities were opened in 1958. In
Melbourne there are also many museums:
the Royal Exhibition Building, the Science
Museum and the Immigration Museum. Another museum is the Museum of
Victoria.
Alice Springs
Alice Springs is in the centre of
Australia in the Northern Territory.
Alice Springs has 22.000
inhabitants. For about a hundred
years Alice Springs was just a small
group of houses. Then Alice Springs
grew larger because it became a
centre for
tourism due
to the
outback. In
Alice Springs
there are many museums about fossils: meteorites,
minerals and aboriginal remains. The Stuart Town Jail is
the oldest building in Alice Springs. Alice Springs also has
a desert park, which is a country park with desert
animals. Alice Springs also has a School of the Air.

Kangaroo
The kangaroo is the most famous Australian animal in
Australia. People love them because they like to watch
the kangaroos when they are boxing. There are about
65 different kinds, and three kinds are already
extinct. Kangaroos are herbivores. Kangaroos are
nocturnal. Kangaroos also live in New Guinea, which is
north of Australia. Kangaroos have a pouch for their
babies. Here is a picture where you can see the
kangaroos fighting.
Koala
Everyone knows the lovely sleepy koala. Like the
kangaroos they have also a pouch for their babies.
They live in eucalyptus trees. Koalas like to eat
leaves, tree bark and fruit. They are also
nocturnal. They only eat 200 to 400 grams of food
in one day and they sleep for 16 hours in one day.
They are good climbers and really muscular. Here
you can see a picture of a koala with its baby.
Wombat
Like the koalas and the kangaroos, wombats also have
a pouch for their babies. They look like a cross
between a pig and a bear but they live in burrows.
Wombats weigh between 20 to 40 grams. The name
wombat comes from the Aborigines in New South
Wales. The English name for it is Native Badger.
Wombats live in the south and east of Australia. The
dingo is the main enemy of the wombat. Dingos are
dogs. Here you can see wombats asleep.
Tasmanian devils
You can find the Tasmanian devil only in Tasmania.
Tasmania is an island south of the mainland of
Australia. The Tasmanian devil is a carnivore. The
Tasmanian devil is nocturnal.

Music

Didgeridoo
The didgeridoo is a wind instrument. The
didgeridoo is a traditional instrument
from the Aborigines in Australia. The
didgeridoo is a wood instrument, usually
made from bamboo. The didgeridoo is
between 1 m to 2,50m long.

The Bullroarer
The bullroarer is the oldest musical instrument of the
Aborigines. The bullroarer is a shallow, usually oval
musical instrument. It is made of wood or bone. It is
between 15 to 25cm long with rounded edges. It is
between 1,25cm to 5cm metres wide and attached to a
long rope which is swung in a large circle and this makes
a tone, which can be heard over a long distance.
The Gumleaf
The gumleaf is a simple music instrument of the
Aborigines. In Australia the gumleaf is played in
traditonal music of the Aborigines,
but non-Aboriginal people can also
play the gumleaf. Non-Aboriginal
people have been playing the gumleaf
since 1977. The exact age of the
gumleaf is not known, but it is likely
to be very old. The first report about gumleaf music came
from the 18th century. Guboo Ted Thomas was an Aboriginal
tribal chief. He was a known Gumleaf musician. He was born
in 1909 and he died in 2002. He played the gumleaf at the
opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Euchalyptus leaves
are used as the instrument. This instrument can be played
by everyone. To make the sound you have to put the euchalyptus leaves between
your lips and then you must blow and then the leaves vibrate and create a tone.

Waltzing Matilda:

Waltzing Matilda is Australia's best-known folk song and
has often been proposed as the official national anthem.
The text was written in 1895 by the Australian poet Banjo
Paterson, who enjoys widespread support in Australia for
his numerous other popular poems. It was set to music by
Christina Macpherson to the music of the Scottish song
Thou Bonnie Wood of Craigielea, written in 1818 by James
Barr.

Captain Cook

James Cook was born on November7th, 1728, in Middlesborough in England.
James Cook was born under the sign of Scorpio.
At the age of eighteen, he went to sea, and he worked for ten years on a coal ship on the
east coast of England.
In 1755 he joined the Royal Navy. He was appointed captain of the 'Pembroke' and got
the job to measure the St. Lawrence River in Canada.
He acquired knowledge of mathematics and astronomy. He was a highly skilled
navigator, cartographer, explorer, and sailor.
Cook's first voyage to the Pacific took three years from 1768 to 1771.
James Cook was a prominent British sailor and explorer and was the first European to
discover the east coast of Australia and Hawaii.
He died at the age of 50 on February14th, 1779 in Kealakekua, Hawaii in the United
States.

Aborigines

The Aborigines are the indigenous people of Australia.
They settled about 40,000 to 50,000 years ago on the continent.
Aborigines are not a unified people, but consist of tribes.
The word aborigine means in English, an original inhabitant of a land.
With the arrival of white settlers in 1788, the number of Aboriginal people fell from an
estimated 300,000 to 60,000 in 1920.
About three-quarters of today's Aborigines live in cities.

The Outback (written by Hüseyin)
The flat, hot centre of Australia is called
the outback. The outback is more than
two-thirds of Australia, but its population
is less than 100,000.
Many people live on sheep or cattle
stations, which are enormous farms. There
are a few cattle stations in Australia which
are each as large as the country of
England.
The nearest neighbour is perhaps a
hundred kilometres away, the nearest city
1,500 kilometres away.
People travel by road or by air. On the
roads you can often see road trains
carrying cattle from the cattle stations.
Small aeroplanes are used to take people, food, post and machines to places that are far
away from the towns.

School of the Air

The School of the Air is a special school for the sparsely inhabited areas of
Australia. The teachers send the work to the students by post. Today students
learn with the help of the Internet. The material and homework are sent by email. The first School of the Air was a school near Alice Springs. The School of
the Air in Alice Springs had 120 students. The school has an area of
1.000.000 km². 15% of students at this school were Aborigines. At the moment
about 220 children visit the School of the Air. They learn from the Primary
School to the 10th grade. The subjects which are taught are languages, maths,
information technology, biology, geography and art. German is the second
language. The students spend one week every year in Alice Springs and during
this time they can physically meet with their classmates and their teachers. In

Aussie slanguage (written by Oliver)
It is not known, how many languages the Aborigines spoke before the settlers
came. It is said that between 200 to 300 languages were spoken, but
Ethnologists believe that there were about 250 languages. Half of the languages
are now extinct and about 20 different languages are learnt by Aboriginal
children, but these languages are in danger of extinction. The remaining 100
languages can only be spoken by elderly Aborigines in Australia. Today the
Australian language which is generally spoken is the so called Aussie-English. The
Australians speak English just like you and me, but there are some words we do
not understand. Here are some words in English and in Australian English.

Chloe: In a small city called

Chloe: My nearest neighbour lives next door to me.
I: How many children use the School of the Air programme?
Chloe: There are only two kids who use this programme.
I: How many children are in your class?
Chloe: There are about 22 kids in my class.

I: Do you see many animals?
Chloe: I see lots of different animals like crocodiles, kangaroos, dogs, cats,
parrots, and many more.

Chloe: Here in Borroloola it is very warm in the morning then it gets
hot between 11a.m. to 3p.m., when it is usually 40 degrees

Oliver: Aktekin Serafettin your work is not so good I think. You should do more,
if you want to get a good mark in English.
Fabian: You don't really have much hope of getting a good mark.
Raphii: Serafettin your work is not good.
You have not worked much. If you want to get a good grade you have to do
much more.
Can: Serafettin your work is not good. You started with animals and stopped. If
you want to have a good mark then you have to do everything!
Mrs Richter: You have failed to answer any of the questions. You have not provided
any information about the subject. In Captain Cook you only wrote that he was a British
sailor, you could have found out much more information about him had you tried. In the
animals section you only named the kangaroo, there are lots of different animals you could
have written about such as koalas, emus and wombats for example. There is insufficient
information in all of the sections. You should have done much more.
Mrs Exenberger: You did not write any text about your portfolio in 'Question' and
'Information'. Your ‘Final Thoughts’ are not okay. The layout in 'Sights' is terrible. The texts
you have wrtten in each topic are very short. You did not put the addresses from the texts
and pictures under 'Website Credits'. You did not try to make a nice portfolio. Your portfolio is
really the worst of all. I think a pupil from Primary School can find out more about Australia
than you did.
Oliver: Can Aydemir I think your work is okay for a 3rd level group. But I don't
understand many of the words, for example: I don't understand what you did in
Cities or in the Outback and so on. But other things are okay. I hope you'll get a
good mark for your work.
Fabian: You did not do very much but for a third group it is good.
Raphii: Should I think your work is really good? It is good for a third level
group.
Dodi: I think your work is okay for a third level group. I think you will get
a good mark.
Mrs Richter: It would have been better if you had not taken so much text direct
from your internet sources. You should have read the text and put it into your
own words. I am not convinced that you fully understand all that you have put
into your portfolio.
Mrs Exenberger: Your layout in 'Cities' looks terrible. It's a pity, you didn't work
more carefully. Searching for information is okay but you did not write the texts
in your own words.

Mrs Richter: Your portfolio would have been better if you had not copied text direct from
the Internet, you should have read it first and then put it into your own words. In
addition, using an on-line translater does not mean that the text is correctly translated.
You often lose the true meaning. You obviously did not read translated texts or you
would have found out the mistakes. I don't believe you fully understand what you have
presented.
Mrs Exenberger: It' a shame, you copied all your texts instead of putting them into your
own words. It was a good idea to put the manuscript paper of Waltzing Matilda in your
segment 'Music'. Why didn’t you write all the topics in English?
Rinroe: Tuba your portfolio is really great, it is perfect.
Nikol: Your portfolio is good. You have many pictures. It's great. =)
Melisa: Tuba your portfolio is perfect. I love the music, because it is very interesting and
I love the didgeridoo.
LaLa: I like it very much and your pictures are beautiful.
Mrs Richter: In the section on sights you have the word Canberra but no picture. In the
section on music you have basically lifted text from the Internet without reading it and
then putting it into your own words. You could also have said much more about Captain
Cook and his importance to Australia. The text about the School of the Air was a direct
lift from the Internet. Again you should have put it in your own words. I don't believe
that you understand everything that is in the text. It would have been good to read your
final comments about your RPI portfolio, it's a shame you didn't include them.
Mrs Exenberger: The layout in 'Animals' is not very nice. Some texts are too long and all
of them are copied. You did not write your final thoughts. Your work is really not well
done.
Dodi: Fabian I think your work is not okay, because I don't understand your words.
I think you have taken these words direct from the Internet.
Seroo: That was really good but I don’t understand the words. I hope you
will get a good mark.
Oliver: Fabian your work is from the Internet I know that because I found the
same text on the Internet.
Can: Your work is not good for a 2nd level group. You haven't written very much.
Mrs Richter: It would have been interesting to know your thoughts at the beginning of
the project and at the end. You too have made the mistake of sometimes copying text
direct from your Internet source and not putting it into your own words.
Mrs Exenberger: Your document 'Start' is very short. You have forgotten to write some
texts in 'Question' and 'Final Thoughts'. You also have not found English titles for each
topic. I like your page in 'Informaton' although you should write there what you have
already known about Australia and where you will get the information from. It's a pity
your music examples cannot be heard.
