A Message from our President...
Fall is upon us! I love this time of year…….the cooler days and the
beautiful hill sides with the leaves changing color….we live in such a
pretty area!
Please keep in mind….October is Domestic Violence Awareness
Month and Breast Cancer Awareness month---WEAR PINK!

Wow….What a busy and exciting September! We had an awesome
turnout at our Membership Drive/Program meeting on Wednesday
September 24th. Thank you to everyone that invited a guest, we had
12 new prospects/potential members attend. The presentation that Kodi, Lynn and Bonnie
worked on was wonderful and reminded us of all the amazing things we have accomplished last
year and what we continue to do.
We had a great turnout to our 1st After-Hours event at LaComida’s Thursday September 25th and
a huge Thank-you goes out to Laurie Ash and Judy Wichern for taking the lead of this committee
for the upcoming months. We are looking forward to some fun evenings that are being planned!
District Conference was held in Powell Saturday and Sunday September 27 th and 28th, we had 19
members from our club in attendance! That is awesome! Our club did not let anyone down….we
attended the banquet with open hearts and open ‘WINGS’. It was a great time! Thank you for
taking the time out of your weekend and attending and supporting the Powell club. District and
Regional conferences are great opportunities to get re-energized and ready for the year and learn
what is happening in our district/region along with nationally. The regional conference will be
held next April and is in Ogden, Utah….more information to come as time gets closer.
And finally we ended the month and started October with our 6 th Annual Run For Hope. The
weather was beautiful and we had a great turnout---runners, walkers and volunteers! Huge thank
-you to Theresa Gunn and Dawn Odasz for taking the lead with this year’s event and guiding us
and thank-you to those that helped with set-up, kids race, manning the race route and tear-down.
Once the dust settles we will have the results from our hard work to share with everyone.
I’m looking forward to the coming month…….learning what our wine tasting theme is going to
be and sharing our financial successes from last year’s event with our community grant recipients.

Few dates to keep in mind……….Wednesday October 22nd Program Meeting/Grant recipients
will be in attendance. Saturday November 1st is the Cody Cupboard food drive, Linda Olson
will be looking for volunteers to help with the food drive. Saturday November 22nd is the
Crisis Intervention Craft Fair; we will have a booth and need volunteers to man the booth
throughout the day.

Founders Day
Soroptimist celebrates Founders Day on October 3, which acknowledges the day in 1921 when
the first club in Alameda County, California, called to order its first business meeting. Clubs can
celebrate the founding of the organization with activities to promote the organization and its
early mission to “foster the ideal of service” through programs that now focus on improving
the lives of women and
girls in local communities
and throughout the world.

Her mother passed
away October 3.

Morrison-Maierle has hired engineer Theresa Gunn for its newly opened
office in Cody. She will join Frank Page as a senior engineer.
Gunn comes to Morrison-Maierle with more than 25 years of experience
providing project management and leadership on a number of projects
related to water, street, storm drain, sewer, and site plans.
She is a 1988 graduate of the University of Wyoming, from which she holds a
B.S. in civil engineering with an emphasis in architecture. Gunn also
graduated from a certificate program in engineering management from the
University of California-Irvine in 1994.
Gunn is involved in several Cody organizations. She is a graduate of the Park
County Leadership Institute, is actively involved Soroptimist International of
Cody and was a former board member of the Riley Arena Board and
Absaroka Figure Skating.
Lori Swanton is a physical therapist in Cody who has
been skiing for 12 years and, in her profession, she’s
seen many people come in for skiing-related injuries.
Her knowledge of physical therapy combined with her
love for skiing led her to start a ski conditioning class
at the rec center.
“Seeing a need for it working in physical therapy I saw
many ski accidents that could have been prevented
with some ski conditioning,” Swanton said.
The class holds 30 people, but Swanton said the rec center might have to start a new class due to high
numbers.
The class is 7-8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Sessions will continue until Nov. 13 and the price is $65 for
members and $95 for non-members. For information, call the rec center, 587-0400.

CIS Press Release - Date: September 23, 2014
Annually in October each year Crisis Intervention Services (CIS) and domestic violence agencies around the
nation, celebrate National Domestic Violence Awareness Month by engaging in various awareness activities.
This October, Crisis Intervention Services has partnered with The Thistle to start a “CIS’ters Book Club” on
Facebook. The CIS’ters Book Club will be a reading-for-fun group to empower and challenge its members
with thought and discussion provoking materials. CIS executive director, Lisa Peterman states that “We hope
to be able to share some books that have helped a number of our clients throughout the years, in addition to
some books that may touch on abuse issues, but also entertain while providing illumination.”
Anyone can join “CIS’ters” via PayPal on the CIS website www.cis-park.org or at the CIS’ters Facebook page.
Cost to join CIS’ters is a $50 non-refundable donation, plus the cost of books which will be made available for
purchase at The Thistle 1243 Rumsey, in downtown Cody. Once payment is received, CIS’ters will then send
you a Facebook friend request. Every 3 months (3 books annually), CIS’ters will post the name of the book
that we will be reading and discussing over the 4 month time-frame. Members may read as many or as few
books as they would like, read at their own pace and then post comments for discussion. “Suggested reading
from CIS’ters members will be encouraged as we hope to make this a fun and interactive experience for our
members, stated Lisa Peterman, Executive Director.”
CIS staff will be monitoring the CIS’ters page and will delete any comments deemed abusive or in bad taste.
Additionally, CIS reserves the right to “de-friend” anyone who uses the site in a manner that is deemed
inappropriate or abusive.
The first book will start on October 1, 2014 and will be up for discussion on CIS’ters Facebook page until
December 31, 2014. CIS’ters book club will be starting with:
One Thousand White Women – by Jim Fergus is the story of May Dodd and a colorful assembly of pioneer women
who, under the auspices of the U.S. government, travel to the western prairies in 1875 to intermarry among the
Cheyenne Indians. The covert and controversial "Brides for Indians" program, launched by the administration of
Ulysses S. Grant, is intended to help assimilate the Indians into the white man's world. Toward that end May and
her friends embark upon the adventure of their lifetime. Jim Fergus has so vividly depicted the American West that
it is as if these diaries are a capsule in time.(less)
The first year of CIS’ters Book Club membership will run for 12 months starting October 1, 2014 and ending
on September 30, 2015 at which time current members will have an opportunity to re-join for the next 12
months. New members will be accepted at any time. Prior to Domestic Violence Awareness month in
October each year, members will be encouraged to make additional contributions to Crisis Intervention
Services via PayPal, as they participate in book discussions for continuing CIS’ters Book Club years.
