Annual Report - Haven of Grace
serving young families
why we support the haven
July 1, 2013 – June 30, 2014
“Our church supports the Haven because it operates in a faithbased manner to build long-term relationships with the families
they serve providing education, safe housing, and ongoing
support for their families.”
Mission Ministry, Bonhomme Presbyterian Church
The Haven is special. It helps these young pregnant women
understand their situation, and provides support and tools
necessary for them to begin taking responsibility for their own
future. The Haven of Grace offers no guarantees, but good
example, that can lead to a promising, fulfilling life. We support
and applaud the Haven for their unique hand-up sustainable
efforts.
Vince Mannino, President, R.G. Ross Construction Co., Inc.
•In all, 94 individuals were served in the Residential
Program—35 mothers and 41 children were served in
the Shelter; 7 mothers and 11 children were served in
the Transitional Apartments.
•94% of the babies born to mothers residing at The
Haven were of a healthy birth weight, requiring no
additional hospitalization. One child went home with
his mother after a brief hospital stay. (The Haven
has maintained strong outcomes in this area, when
compared to the City of St. Louis and the State of
Missouri, which have shown an 11.9 % and 8.3% low
birth weight rate, respectively.)
compassion
and respect
•7 mothers worked toward their GED, while 7 attended post secondary programs at Saint
Louis Community College, Vatterott College, Brown-Mackie College and Saint Louis College
of Health Careers.
•10 mothers secured their own apartments (24%); while others moved into shared
housing with family or friends; or into other transitional programs.
•59 families were served through our Aftercare Program, through case management,
community referrals, Adopt-a-Family and emergency financial assistance.
•A recent survey of Aftercare participants showed the following: Of 33 mothers surveyed,
88% were in stable housing; 9% were in temporary housing. Of those living in stable
housing, one third reported living in market rate housing; 42% lived in subsidized, public
or Section 8 housing.
Michael H. Moisio
President of the Board
We assist each young mother we serve in
strengthening the knowledge, skills and resources
she needs to deliver a healthy baby, successfully
parent and provide for the needs of her children,
achieve educational goals, secure employment,
and establish stable housing for her family.
Our goal is to help each mother recover from
homelessness and the negative circumstances of
her past so that she and her children can enjoy
a healthy and productive future.
Blessings to you and yours in 2015!
We, the Board of Directors, the staff and our many volunteers thank you for your continued support of The Haven of Grace and
its mission: “Serving women who are young, pregnant and homeless, we provide a safe, nurturing home, educational programs
and long-term support for mother and child. Founded in faith, we instill hope, dignity and the pride of independence, one
family at a time.”
The Development Committee and special event committees are implementing strategies to grow the two major fundraisers: the
Fall Festival Trivia Night, and Field & Farms – a signature event offering a Friday evening cocktail party & auction, followed by a
Saturday morning clay shoot and awards luncheon. If you have an interest in becoming involved with either of these special events,
or with The Haven of Grace in other ways, we welcome the opportunity to share these and other volunteer opportunities with you.
The Haven provides a safe, nurturing grouphome facility as well as furnished transitional
apartments, nutritious meals, case management
and a comprehensive life skills curriculum
focusing on seven core areas: Parenting,
Housing, Independent Living, Physical and
Emotional Health, Education, Employment and
Spirituality.
From a financial perspective, 2013-2014 was a challenging fiscal year. The Development Committee has recruited additional
volunteer support for donor events in the coming year, and, as in past years, we are encouraging donor awareness of the
Missouri Maternity Home Tax Credit – a wonderful benefit to our donors.
In addition, a long-standing policy which stated that mothers who once resided at The Haven could not reside on the
campus again, was reversed. Now, Quad Apartments are open to former residents of the Maternity Shelter, affording them the
opportunity to live on campus for up to two years, while paying an affordable rent and contributing to a matching savings
program. Contributing to a savings fund can help a family to avoid a repeat episode of homelessness. This new program
initiative is helping mothers to improve their credit scores, build their savings, and enabling them to prepare for their future.
One mother has purchased a car, which allows her to work more hours and still get to her child’s daycare on time for pick-up.
Our History: Established in 1988 by members of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, The Haven of
Grace has served homeless, pregnant women, ages 18 to 24, and their small children, for over
25 years.
integrity
and trust
A Haven priority has been to strengthen the participation in, and overall experience of, our Quadrangle Transitional Apartments.
Young mothers residing in the apartments experienced a sense of isolation, of not belonging. A decision was made to refurbish
and re-purpose one of the Quad apartments. That unit is now a well-used community space which offers laundry facilities for
Quad residents, a television, kitchen and social area. Our Live-In House Parent organizes community-building activities there
for the Quad families.
Our Strategic Plan for 2014-2017 contains a strong program component. Along with two full Board retreats, surveys and
interviews were conducted with current and former residents, board members, volunteers, staff members and collaborators. The
Strategic Plan provides a road map and priorities for the coming years, methods and actions to accomplish these priorities, tools
to measure progress, and a basis upon which to allocate resources of all types.
The Haven of Grace is the steward of your gifts and contributions. We continually monitor
the progress of the women residing on our campus as they learn to stabilize their lives, have a healthy pregnancy and gain the
knowledge, tools and resources to live independently. We have bi-weekly case review meetings for each client. The Program
Committee meets monthly to assess and determine if current programs are meeting the changing needs of the women and
children we serve. The Committee worked diligently this past year to establish new program objectives and expected outcomes.
Additional measures were developed to track client progress.
Our Values:
Integrity, Trust, Compassion,
Respect, Accountability, Responsibility, Dignity,
Diversity, Spirituality, Service, Industriousness and
Excellence.
Our Mission: Serving women who are young,
pregnant and homeless, we provide a safe, nurturing
home, educational programs and long-term support
for mother and child. Founded in faith, we instill
hope, dignity and the pride of independence, one
family at a time.
Our Vision: Providing strong leadership and
enriching programs, The Haven of Grace empowers
young pregnant women to overcome obstacles and
achieve stability. Through community resources,
coaching and a family-like support network, young
mothers achieve self-sufficiency, obtain safe
housing in the community and secure a bright,
healthy future for themselves and their children.
The Board of Directors and employees of The Haven of Grace are pleased to provide our
2013-2014 Fiscal Year Annual Report for you. This report includes highlights from our
audited Financial Statement and a summary of our accomplishments, challenges, and
opportunities. We thank you for your contributions, whether financial, in kind, volunteer
time or service on the Board and its committees. All contributions, regardless of type,
allow The Haven of Grace to better serve the needs of our clients – young, pregnant,
homeless women. Your generosity in all ways makes a meaningful difference in the lives
of these women and children.

She moved back with her mother for a while, but there were times
when she didn’t feel welcome. She would sleep in her car. When she later got pregnant and told her
baby’s father, he fled. Her uncle encouraged her to take charge of her life.
She reached out to The Haven of Grace, and was invited for an interview with the programs team. When
she arrived at The Haven, she was surprised by what she found. “My idea of a shelter was different.
When I got there, I thought, yes, this is where I need to be. It didn’t feel like a shelter, ever. It felt
like a dormitory. I liked having my own space and a place to put my things.”
Alicia participated in The Haven of Grace Residential Program. Like the other mothers in the program, she
lived on campus, attended weekly life skills classes, and worked with The Haven’s Transition Specialist
to develop a personal goal plan focused on parenting, employment and housing. She attended House
meetings and helped with chores. She delivered a beautiful, healthy baby girl named AnnaLisa. Soon
after, she landed a job as a hostess at a St. Louis hotel.
After seven months, Alicia graduated from The Residential Program. “I left The Haven, ready to tackle
life,” she says.

Our work at Moneta Group revolves around family—Haven of Grace also focuses on families—
the single mom who needs help to start fresh with a new child—we are aligned with and
embrace this fundamental service and support the Haven’s mission both financially and through
volunteering.

As a mother myself, I understand the desire to make the best possible life for your children.
The Haven of Grace gives mothers a chance to do just that. I’m proud to be able to help in the
pursuit of giving mothers a chance to redefine their lives – and ultimately their children’s lives,
too. Kimberly D. Tuck, President and CEO, NurseWise, a Centene Company
Our employees really believe in the mission of The Haven of Grace and want to support it. We
participate in The Adopt-a-Family program
every year because we feel that we are helping
to create happy memories for the mothers and
children. That is very fulfilling. Our teams are so
energetic, taking each family into their hearts.
Most employees would say that they benefit
from the experience as much as the mothers and
children… by adopting a family and buying them
gifts, we are actually giving ourselves a gift.

Annual Report
Emerson is proud to support organizations in the St. Louis area that provide services to those
in need. We’re pleased to partner with The Haven of Grace to give women a safe and supportive
environment, educational opportunities and career assistance—leading to a better future for
the young mothers and children in our community.
Patrick J. Sly, Executive Vice President, Emerson
She and her daughter lived with Alicia’s mother for a short time, allowing Alicia to work at her hostess
job while saving money for her next move. She landed a better-paying job at a major prescriptions
benefit provider, which enabled her to get her own apartment. Since that time, she suffered a threemonth period of unemployment, worked two jobs for awhile to make ends meet, and now works as a
claims analyst for an auto warranty company. She has held this position since March 2014.
Alicia says she learned so many things while living at The Haven of Grace. “I learned patience. I learned
compassion. I learned to open up. I learned that sometimes you have to do things you don’t want to
do.” When other young women ask her about The Haven of Grace, she tells them, “They don’t give you
a house, but they give you the tools you need to get your own house.”
Alicia is proud to have her own place, and she says keeping that roof over her daughter’s head is priority
one. AnnaLisa is now two years old. “She looks up to me. She makes me want to work harder. I’ve set
my mind to growing and avoiding the situation I was in previously. I’ve learned to prioritize, and I feel
validated when I pay my rent and other bills. “
Building her savings and reducing debt are her goals for 2015. She is working on a 52-week savings
plan. Doing so will allow her to move to a bigger apartment. She would like to return to school someday
as well, to pursue her nursing degree.
In the meantime, she uses her experience to encourage others. She visits The Haven periodically to
prepare breakfast for mothers in the Residential Program. “I remember how meaningful it was to me when
I lived at The Haven of Grace and others came to cook meals or donate clothing and such. Now I do the
same. It is humbling. I am reminded that I was homeless once. If I can inspire a young mom to complete
the program, then I want to do that. I want her to know there is light at the end of the tunnel.”
