Sells Scent Art in Berlin

BERLIN — Master perfumer Christophe Laudamiel has created hits in a bottle for Estée Lauder and Burberry,
conjured up ambient atmospheres for Belstaff and Ferrari, and directed a scent opera at the Guggenheim
Museum. His next incarnation? As a regular on Berlin’s gallery scene.
“Art is about provocation,” he said. “Provocation makes people think about a difficult problem. The fragrance
industry never does that — it’s not their thing.”
Laudamiel, who also shows at New York’s Dillon Gallery, has forged an ongoing partnership with Mianki Gallery
owner Andreas Herrmann. Herrmann will exhibit Laudamiel’s scent sculptures in conjunction with other artists
in his roster, be they painters, photographers or sculptors. Laudamiel will also have a solo show at Mianki in

“We specialize in artists who work with special materials or in a special way with materials,” said Herrmann, “so

his partner have their home and perfume lab nearby in the neighborhood of Schöneberg.
The arrangement kicked off with Laudamiel’s contributions to the March-April exhibit “Emotions,” which paired
scent works with digital color field images from Jakob Kupfer.
To display the olfactory artworks, Laudamiel and Herrmann developed several new exhibition forms, including
Scent Squares — empty pedestal-mounted frames that visitors press on to release puffs of fragrance while gazing
through them at different Kupfer works.
“I see this as an airy filter,” says Laudamiel of his almost silent, compressor-powered invention. “The point is to
look at a visual through two different scent lenses. And the brain is going to connect the dots differently. ”
Another new form was developed with porcelain maker KPM. Dubbed Scent Parabols, the large, white, lidded

“Emotions” exhibit featured five Scent Parabols — two relating to temperature (“Warm” and “Kalt”) and a
triptych playing on purity and femininity called “3 Shades of White.”
These new forms are helping formalize olfactory art as a collectable prospect, says Laudamiel, who says he now
spends 80 percent of his time working on ambient perfumery projects.
“What do people buy? Do they buy the formula? Do they buy the smell? Do they buy a concept? It’s a lot of
questions, and we’re answering them one by one. But I hope the art world jumps in it and defines some new
things for scents,” he says.
Though the technology is still in development mode, Herrmann estimated the pair of Scent Squares together
would carry a price of 6,000 euros, or about $8,300. Another two works released into the gallery using diffusers
from Prolitec are listed as selling for 1,800 euros and 3,600 euros, respectively, or about $2,500 and $5,000.
Laudamiel’s firm DreamAir sells a home fragrance kit via its Web site with a similar diffuser and set of three
scents for $399.
Laudamiel and Herrmann seem most pleased with the Scent Parabols, which allow a more controlled scent
experience. Signed and numbered in limited editions of five, each carries a price of 1,200 euros, or about $1,660.
The Scent Parabols come with enough scent oil to refresh the effect 600 times. If a collector runs out, refills can
be ordered using a personal-edition number and certificate. Laudamiel clearly wants these pieces to endure.
“After the artist’s death, there are some plans — this has to be archived to ensure the purity of the art form,” he
explains. Firmenich will record and hold Laudamiel’s scent sculpture formulae, as will the Osmotheque.
Monetizing this burgeoning art form should also help legitimize it. Yet Laudamiel insists his main mission in
Berlin is education.
“For me, it’s obvious that we should have a price list and also give a value of things, and especially in the
education part, because people think you buy a scent by the kilo, like potatoes. You never buy a Picasso or a Jeff
Koons by the kilo — and you don’t buy a piece of music by the length. It’s the same for us. We want to increase
the appreciation that people have for olfactory design or perfumery or anything that can be done with the nose,”

It seems Laudamiel’s hit the target the first time — Mianki sold one of the Scent Parabols from the “Emotions”
show, titled “3 Shades of White — Volatile Marilyn #15,” to a Swiss collector. “It’s fantastic for this exhibition and

Berlin catches whiff of olfactory art scentsation
Berlin is known as a hotspot for edgy creativity - from contemporary art to street art and
sound art. Now scent art is making a splash in the German capital, from the gallery to the
cinema.

"It's something intangible, something invisible, and something you cannot control. I cannot put the
scent on a leash," says perfumer and artist Christophe Laudamiel. But, as it turns out, he can put scent
in a gallery.
Laudamiel's olfactory art had its German debut at
Mianki Gallery in Berlin. "We specialize in artists
who work with special materials or in a special way with materials," said gallery owner Andreas
Herrmann, who paired Laudamiel's scent sculptures with works from self-dubbed "photo painter"
Jakob Kupfer.
French-born Laudamiel has 20 years of experience in the fragrance industry, where he developed topselling commercial fragrances for firms including Ralph Lauren, Burberry and Estée Lauder. These
days, he spends 80 percent of his time creating ambient perfumery with his own company, DreamAir.
Those ambient scents, custom made for hotels and stores, are released through hi-tech diffusers, as are
two of the scents he recently presented at Mianki Gallery.
Putting fragrance in a frame
For their exhibition, "Emotions," Christophe Laudamiel and Andreas Herrmann worked with several
local designers and installation experts to develop new ways of displaying olfactory art - and the result
is like nothing you've ever seen - or smelled.
In the main room of the gallery, what look like two empty white frames rise up from pedestals.
Looking closely, you can see the tips of four transparent tubes inside. Press on the top of the pedestal
and a dose of scent is released.
This particular scent is called "Gone with the Wind," but Laudamiel refers to the whole concept as
"Scent Squares." The idea is to sniff and simultaneously view Kupfer's work through the white frame.
The additional Scent Squares emit fragrances
that are not strong, but deliver evolving
impressions - orange trees, white flowers, the
seaside -, depending on the accompanying work
by Kupfer. Called "Fades," Kupfer's digital
prints are framed LCD screens with images that
slowly shift and morph colors and shapes.

Both Kupfer's visuals and Laudamiel's scents demand attention and time. Olfactory art doesn't lend
itself to the sort of rushed, glimpsed viewing many people are prone to in museums and galleries.
"With a scent, you cannot do that," Laudamiel insisted. "You can't breathe faster than you can
breathe." Also, he continued, biologically you can't accelerate how quickly your nose clears itself, so it's
best to wait between smelling his sculptures.
Smell a feeling
Working with porcelain manufacturer KPM, Laudamiel created another new kind of scent sculpture:
giant, covered white bowls inspired by the Japanese tea ceremony and connoisseurs that smell the tea
bowl's lid to take in its nuances. Inside Laudamiel's creations, dubbed "Scent Parabols," there are two
or three pieces of extruded white clay. They look like chalk, or calcified coral, and have been doused
with special fragrance oil.
Two placed next to each other are named "Warm
#3" and "Kalt #2," or warm and cold. For the
former, Laudamiel said he used materials
including sandalwood to evoke warm, brown and
orange smells - pumpkin, chestnuts, a touch of
cinnamon. Herrmann noted that "Warm" seems to
bring forth cozy feelings in gallery visitors, whereas
"Kalt" challenges people's minds as they try to
decode it.
To deliver a frigid frisson, Laudamiel used some of

the types of fragrance ingredients that make
laundry smell fresh. "Kalt" also includes molecules that evoke the cold wateriness of melon, though not
its fruitiness, and the cool element of spearmint, but without its mintiness.
"With a scent, I can make a room feel colder than it is," said the artist.
The Scent Parabols are limited to editions of five, and carry a list price of 1,200 euros. The pair of
Scent Squares, a more experimental project, would likely sell for 6,000 euros. Laudamiel agreed that
monetizing olfactory art is one way to help legitimize it.
While his main goal is educating people about how to consider and appreciate fragrance as an art
form, he says it's important to show that scent art has a value, and that it's not the same as what you
might pick out at a perfumery and spray on your skin.
Surround scent cinema
Across town, a different sensory experiment is making going to the movies a "surround scent"
experience. Le Cinéma Olfactif is a series of screenings at the Berlin club
house films with custom fragrances from independent perfumer
Soho House that pair art
Mark Buxton.
It's the brainchild of Kaya Sorhaindo, a creative director who has worked with
David Lynch and
Art Basel, but may be best known as a founder of Six Scents, a niche fragrance line that united up-
and-coming fashion designers with artistic perfumers. His new project, Folie à Plusieurs ("Madness of
Many"), will continue creative collaborations between
contemporary artists and perfumers.
"I'm hoping that through this experience people will be able to
connect with the film in a different way, see different things, tap
into different emotions," explained Sorhaindo.
For the premiere, Buxton developed a scent inspired by the film
"L'écume des jours" ("Mood Indigo" in English), Michel Gondry's
2013 retro-futurist romance based on Boris Vian's somewhat
surrealist 1947 novel of the same name. In the story, the
protagonist's beloved wife becomes ill with a water lily in her lung

and her treatment requires that she be surrounded by the freshest
of blooms.
But it was the jazz-tinged vibe of the film that resonated with
Mark Buxton, a music lover who has named several scents in his
perfume line after iconic songs. Along with lily and freesia, Buxton used notes of red pepper and
chamomile to evoke the madcap start of the film and its blossoming romance. As the story takes a
somber turn, so does its scented soundtrack.
"For me, jazz is smoky, it's incense, it's a bit mystical, it's dark," Buxton says, "And the film becomes
very dark at the end."
A scent diffusion unit created by Scentys Paris was used to release Buxton's fragrances into the Soho
House's small cinema during two screenings. The unit was operated manually to bring in the scents
according to the tone and plot of the film. During one joyful scene, a kaleidoscopic flower shape bursts
out over the dance floor while Duke Ellington plays. The Mood Indigo fragrance blooms at the exact
same time, completing the thrilling, sensual moment. At other times, the scent comes in and out, but
the audience is left wondering whether they missed the cue on screen.
Presentation will require some fine-tuning; some
viewers were perfectly perfumed, while others
sniffed the air in vain. But all the cinemagoers were
pleased with their parting gift - a small spray bottle
of Mood Indigo eau de parfum, along with a
porcelain diffuser strip they can use to recreate the
experience at home.
Commitment to a new kind of art
The times on the fragrance's label correspond with the two

critical moments in the movie that inspired Mark Buxton
concept was a hit. Kaya Sorhaindo and Mark
Buxton have decided to pick up the project again in June at the Soho Houses in both Berlin and
London. Le Cinéma Olfactif will also have a special run in December at Art Basel Miami. Additionally,
Mood Indigo raised enough interest outside Berlin that it and future Buxton film scents will be sold in
select shops in several key cities, including Paris, Tokyo and Los Angeles.
There's good news for Christophe Laudamiel's scent sculptures and the Mianki Gallery, too. The
exhibition resulted in the first sale of a Scent Parabol, to a Swiss collector. And Andreas Herrmann has
decided to keep Laudamiel on as a regular contributor - each exhibition at Mianki will be accompanied
by a related Laudamiel scent work and Laudamiel will have his first solo show at Mianki in 2015.
"The future will show us what comes, and I'm very open," said Herrmann. "I'm interested to see what
we'll say when we meet again here in one, two, or in five years - when we stand here again and look
back, to see how it went forward."

Perfume is also a type of performance art. First because, if it
has been conceived as fine fragrance, the heat of its wearer’s
body is needed for its form to become perceptible. Then, more
importantly, because it is our “reading” of it that materializes it
into words, images, stories.
Christophe Laudamiel and Jakob Kupfer’s joint exhibition at

supplied two types of images called FADES. The first are
photos of colored lights on waxed pigment prints that somehow
feel like they are moving, reproducing the unfocused gaze of a
newborn’s eyesight. The others are light-boxes in which many
pictures are layered: a mechanism within the box creates a
“motion picture”, so that the abstract colored spots are
constantly morphing.

The second type of installation solves the main commercial
issue of scent-art: its invasive nature. Here, the scents are
presented in “parabola”: concave porcelain dishes with a lid,
holding impregnated pieces of ceramic. You smell the “fumes”
in the lid. You put the genie back in the bottle when you set the
lid back on the dish. These can be experienced with or without
a visual “partner”: in the latter case, words (the titles) act as
hooks for meaning, though you are encouraged to smell first,
read later. Scent art is not a Greenbergian, intransitive “nothing
but the olfactory” form of expression: it always-already plays
on the words that inspired it or that it inspires.

constantly renewed pleasure of surprise. And because these
successive, instantaneous bubbles of see-smell-name play on
the most fleeting of perceptions, brought on by the most
ungraspable, indescribable elements – scent molecules and
photons --, they generate myriad immaterial, irreproducible,
ephemeral, individual artworks. Tiny synesthetic seizures; stopmotion brainwaves; pop-up memories.
And the beauty of it is that anyone can get it. This novel form
of show-and-smell manages to be pedagogical – the other
major hurdle of scent-art is that almost no one knows about

Sounds strange but normal: I have never met Christophe Laudamiel but I feel like I
have known him for ages. I like many of his works—he made all the great Humiecki &
Graef perfumes, he made some weird and attractive S-Perfumes, he followed
Grenouille's mad unscented path with the limited edition coffret Le Parfum launched by
Thierry Mugler. Before the interview I had explored everything about him on the
Internet, so I felt prepared when I got a chance to ask him my questions.

Serguey Borisov: Dear Christophe, I'm very happy to talk to you at last! I found
that you were born in not-perfume-oriented Clermont-Ferrand, far from Grasse or
Paris. Do you visit your hometown often?
Christophe Laudamiel: About once a year. My parents and grand parents still live
there.
Serguey: You have made a great career: from chemistry and flavors in P&G to fine
fragrances in IFF and artistic perfumes in your own company. Is there any essential
difference in the creation of flavors, fragrances and perfumes?
Christophe: My God, you have done a lot of research and reading about me. It’s
flattering.
The biggest difference is the dosing, the relative proportions of the ingredients.
Sometimes the proportion differs by 10 times, 100 times or 1000 times. Otherwise
most of the rest is about the same. Perfumers and flavorists understand each other
very well, and can adapt to each other’s job very very quickly. A perfumer in a flavorist
lab feels totally at home within a few hours to a few days. Well, a good and very
complete perfumer does, meaning a perfumer that knows a lot of ingredients.
Serguey: What's your opinion about the budget issue? Is it possible to make great
perfumes with deep emotional impact based on cheap ingredients only?

paint. Having said that, you limit yourself a lot if you create only good cheap scents.

Serguey: Tell us the story of your partnership with Humiecki & Graef. How did you
meet? Was it after your brilliant work on Le Parfum for Thierry Mugler?
Christophe: I’ve always come to Berlin regularly. Actually since I started perfumery.
Just a coincidence. In the early 2000s I wrote, unsolicited, to the University of the Arts
in Berlin to give some lectures and to do some projects for free there with the students.
The University sent Sebastian [Fischenich], who was a docent there in Product
Design, to discuss it with me. I started to give lectures, then began working with
students on THEIR projects. For free. Rare, rare in the industry. Usually students work
for companies. I was creating custom scents for their projects (product design,
architecture, fashion, depends). I did a lot there. For exmaple, a student wanted a
scent based on cactus and Converse shoes!!! You don’t practice that at perfumery
school. You had better be very sharp with your perfumery skills to do this quickly and
still meet the goal. And I did 10 scents for the 10 students in the class, all to show how
scent creation functions, to give them more ideas, even in their own fields, and to show
we create in perfumery just like they create in their own disciplines.
Serguey: Their (H&G) ideas are so abstract and emotional. How do you work
without meetings with art directors, as I was told?
Christophe: What do you mean no meetings? Sebastian is the art director. Their
concepts are short but strong. Always: one title, three image montages from Sebastian
and one or two ingredients. Then he allows us to interpret the concept, or to give extra
facets or extra inspiration, and then we check with him which inspiration(s) facet(s) fit
with his imagination, in concepts and in smells.
Serguey: To smell is so natural for all living creatures, but it seems that to analyze
smells and be emotional through scents is so human. It also seems like people
cannot feel the very same emotions, so how has it became possible to dissect
emotion into smelling molecules?
Christophe: It is just like how it is possible to distill emotions into a painting.
People have different reactions to single colors. Then, depending on how the colors
are put together—shapes, nuances and mixtures and justapositions, you create other
emotions. Some for which most people agree, some for which it speaks differently to
different people.

Serguey: Could you talk about the newest H&G perfumes of your creation: Abime
and Nouveau-ne? What is behind them?
Atkinsons
Christophe: The fragrances were created with Christoph Hornetz, my colleague and
“partner in crime” perfumer. One was about Pain—opulent, invasive, taking in the
entire body and mind, with dark elements in the back like Juniper, Blackberries, thistle
branches, but yet not suffocating. Pain is a transition, not death.

The other one is about Hope. This is a ray of light going through the fragrance—
optimism, with the brightness of honey from Provence, with Bergamot and Ginger and
a molecule quality called Paradisone®. I have not used the animalic elements of
honey. I don’t know one single bright fresh honey on the market. Hay Absolute in the
back is nice, as there are a lot of positive emotions with hay. And you can smell all
this. Not bluffing. !
You are a very active perfumer: perfumes and air-sculptures, Scented

Real art curators have to embrace olfactory art. Right now they still don’t know what to
do with it and how to display it and forget about how to sell it. That is a big issue in the
art world. We also have to have legal protection for perfume artists. There is next to
nothing right now. The latest decision of the French Supreme court is shooting
olfactory art in the foot. Crazy. We need real lawyers, and work on this subject will take
two or three years.

And we need to publish fragrance formulas. I am going to publish more and
more. That's when it will all be done, and then we can start talking about the more

interesting levels of perfume ideology that follow.
Serguey: The "perfume pyramid" (head-heart-base) is about a century old. The
monolithic perfume principle of Sophia Grojsman is 30 years old. Are there any
other new architectural approaches?
Christophe: There can be as many as there are graphic designers on this planet.
Mine is a star with the concept in the middle and the different elements that participate
in it as the branches. I hate this pyramid thing. It is valid maybe in 5% of the cases. I
like much better what the Fragrantica website does. It's true, and I'm not saying that
because you are writing for them. I told the owners last February. Its very clever and
more appropriate.
Serguey: In 1913, futurist Giacomo Balla have wrote a manifesto about the future
of clothes and mentioned “perfumed underwear and antiseptic socks will appear.”
And now perfumed clothes and socks are in production. Could you predict
something for the future of perfumery?
Christophe: I am working on two products for the future, so hush-hush-hush.
Serguey: You participate in so many art projects. What is your most futuristic
perfume project that you've realized so far? Is there someone or something with
whom (or what) you would never work?
Christophe: First question: Futuristic meaning what? Futuristic for the industry:
plenty, including the first open publication of the complete formula of a finished
fragrance that the industry officially published. But for me that is not futuristic; it is the
industry catching up after many years of being late. Otherwise, my Air-Sculpture
Spacewood exhibited by the Dillon Gallery in January 2013 was a transport into the
future.
Second question: too personal, and I don’t like to bad-mouth people, companies or
causes. However I do have my personal convictions and beliefs and it has happened
(just four or five times in 20 years) that people begged me to work on a project or for a
client and I refused.

Serguey: Could you tell us about your last perfumed project you are most proud
of?
Christophe: Paradise for Nest Fragrances. It is very rare to find a truly juicy citrus,
fresh AND sexy fragrance on the market. Why?
1. Citrus notes are very fragile;
2. Citrus notes can turn rapidly into floor cleaners or orange ice cream pudding;
3. Citrus notes take a while to incorporate into a fragrance, like a good white
wine;
4. Citrus notes are totally not long-lasting on skin. Orange and Lemon evaporate
within 30 minutes;
5. Citrus notes clash with a lot of sexy things in the background;
6. They are a pain in the neck for factories to handle.
Well, Paradise overcomes all that. It was a nightmare to create and make ready for
manufacturing. Most brands would have given up several times along the way in the
project. Thank you to Malinda Appel and Laura Slatkin for consistently believing in it.
Even Sephora had to be involved, to get their understanding, because it was such an
unusual project. It was a lot of know-how and experience put into one perfume on my
and Christoph Hornetz’s part, a lot of trials for the factory at Firmenich, and a great and
unusual project for Nest.
Serguey: Instead of a post-script, let's talk about the self-alternating scents you
created for the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art Biennale? What is the main
principle? Is it patented? Is it possible to try?
Christophe: Yes, of course. We programmed the Aromaco scent players to go on and
off at different times of day, so the museum was breathing one, then another one, then
back to first one, etc, with six switches a day. Shall we do it in Russia next time I am
there???? I can do it. !

Directed by Andreas Hermann, Mianki is an art gallery showcasing the work of artists who
have a peculiar use of material. Introducing art work made of light and scent, both
immaterial, “Emotions” encourages visitors to experience art through the dual sensory
modality of sight and smell together, provoking absolutely new, “private perceptions” in
visitors.
The work of Kupfer and Laudamiel finds common ground in the evanescent and ever-changing
nature of light and scent and the kaleidoscope of emotions they generate. What’s more, with
the introduction of specific objects carrying scent, this exhibition helps defining the way in

Light and scent are the most elementary and most
emotional phenomena in our culture. Christophe
Laudamiel‘s works speak directly to our emotions;
scent has a direct effect on our centre of emotion, and
is later joined by rational perception. Jakob Kupfer
circumvents the »rational filter« through the
complete non-objectivity of his work and so directly
penetrates the individual emotional level of the
beholder.

What both artists share is that they work with
supposedly intangible materials: scent molecules and
light. One could even go further and says that their
work is intangible, as the works only »exist« at the
moment of contemplation, during the subjective
experience of the beholder. The own emerging
internal images and fantasies are the actual »work of
art«.

Hereby Kupfer and Laudamiel define a new class of
»originals«. Pivotal is no longer just the uniqueness
of the pieces, but also the uniqueness and
irreplicability of the subjective experience.

The word »emotion« is derived from the Latin
»emovere« (out and move; stir up). Neurologically
our emotions are located in the oldest and deepest
part of the brain, the limbic system. They
can barely be controlled, but are easily influenced.
They let us feel life but escape specific
analysis.

Christophe Laudamiel both devote themselves in
their artistic work, although in very different ways, to
the exploration of these powerful but equally hidden
domains of our subconscious.
The works of the two artists are scarcely
interpretable, as it is almost impossible to describe or
allocate their content. This also lies in that they
become a »work of art« in the perception of the
individual; their meaning varies for every recipient
and in every circumstance. In this absolute privacy
lies great power. No-one is forced to conduct or to
express themselves accordingly unless they want to.
So the »beholder« discovers a moment of freedom in
the artworks, both against external conditions and
also against self-imposed internal restrictions.
The individual experience develops freely and
uninfluenced by the self. Therefore it is always
unique as it cannot be repeated, reviewed or
questioned. It appears and vanishes in the same
moment. It can always be experienced, but never be
repeated as it will always be different. It is only there
while experienced. It cannot be foreseen and
definitely not reproduced. It cannot be retained; time
to experience must be taken.
And suddenly it becomes clear:
Happiness can be bought, only then it is called art!
Christophe Laudamiel is the latest newcomer to the
Berlin mianki. Gallery. Jakob Kupfer has been
represented by the gallery since 2010. The
cooperation of the two artists for this exhibition will
enable completely new visual-olfactory experiences.

Das Wort »Emotion« entstammt dem lateinischen »emovere«
(herausbewegen, emporwühlen). Neurologisch werden unsere Emotionen
im ältesten und tiefsten Teil des Gehirns, dem limbischen System verortet.
Sie sind kaum zu kontrollieren, dafür aber leicht zu beeinflussen. Sie lassen
uns das Leben spüren und entziehen sich dennoch jeder konkreten Analyse.

widmen sich beide in ihrer künstlerischen Arbeit – wenn auch auf sehr
unterschiedliche Art und Weise – der Erforschung dieses gleichermaßen
mächtigen wie verborgenen Bereichs unseres Unbewusstseins.

Die Arbeiten der beiden Künstler sind kaum zu deuten, denn es ist
weitgehend unmöglich, sie inhaltlich zu beschreiben oder einzuordnen. Das
liegt auch daran, dass sie erst in der individuellen Wahrnehmung zum
eigentlichen »Werk« werden, ihre Bedeutung also mit jedem Rezipienten
und jedem Umstand der Wahrnehmung variieren.

In dieser absoluten Privatheit steckt eine große Kraft. Niemand ist
gezwungen, sich dazu zu verhalten oder sich dazu zu äußern, der das nicht
möchte. So findet der »Betrachter« in den Arbeiten einen Moment der
Freiheit, sowohl gegenüber den äußeren Bedingungen als auch gegenüber
den inneren selbst auferlegten Restriktionen.
Das individuelle Erlebnis entwickelt sich frei und unbeeinflusst aus uns
selbst. Dabei bleibt es immer einzigartig, denn es lässt sich weder
wiederholen, noch überprüfen oder hinterfragen. Es passiert und ist im
gleichen Augenblick vorüber. Man kann es immer wieder erleben, aber
nicht wiederholen, denn es wird immer anders sein. Es ist nur da, während
man es erlebt. Man kann es nicht vorhersagen und schon gar nicht
reproduzieren. Man kann es nicht festhalten, man muss sich Zeit nehmen,
es zu erleben.
Und plötzlich wird einem klar:
Glück kann man kaufen, nur nennt man es dann Kunst!
Christophe Laudamiel ist der jüngste Neuzugang der Berliner mianki.
Gallery. Jakob Kupfer wird seit 2010 von der Galerie vertreten. Die
Zusammenarbeit der beiden Künstler für diese Ausstellung wird völlig neue
visuell-olfaktorische Erlebnisse möglich machen.

Christophe Laudamiel both devote themselves in their artistic work,
although in very different ways, to the exploration of these powerful but
equally hidden domains of our subconscious. The works of the two artists
are scarcely interpretable, as it is almost impossible to describe or allocate
their content. This also lies in that they become a »work of art« in the
perception of the individual; their meaning varies for every recipient and in
every circumstance. In this absolute privacy lies great power. No-one is
forced to conduct or to express themselves accordingly unless they want
to. So the »beholder« discovers a moment of freedom in the artworks, both
against external conditions and also against self-imposed internal
restrictions. The individual experience develops freely and uninfluenced by
the self. Therefore it is always unique as it cannot be repeated, reviewed or
questioned. It appears and vanishes in the same moment. It can always be
experienced, but never be repeated as it will always be different. It is only
there while experienced. It cannot be foreseen and definitely not
reproduced. It cannot be retained; time to experience must be taken. And
suddenly it becomes clear: Happiness can be bought, only then it is called
art! Christophe Laudamiel is the latest newcomer to the Berlin mianki.
Gallery. Jakob Kupfer has been represented by the gallery since 2010. The

Das Wort »Emotion« entstammt dem lateinischen »emovere« (herausbewegen, emporwühlen).
Neurologisch werden unsere Emotionen im ältesten und tiefsten Teil des Gehirns, dem limbischen
System verortet. Sie sind kaum zu kontrollieren, dafür aber leicht zu beeinflussen. Sie lassen uns das
Leben spüren und entziehen sich dennoch jeder konkreten Analyse.
Der Lichtbildner Jakob Kupfer und der Duftbildner Christophe Laudamiel widmen sich beide in ihrer
künstlerischen Arbeit – wenn auch auf sehr unterschiedliche Art und Weise – der Erforschung dieses
gleichermaßen mächtigen wie verborgenen Bereichs unseres Unbewusstseins.
Die Arbeiten der beiden Künstler sind kaum zu deuten, denn es ist weitgehend unmöglich, sie inhaltlich

In dieser absoluten Privatheit steckt eine große Kraft. Niemand ist gezwungen, sich dazu zu verhalten
oder sich dazu zu äußern, der das nicht möchte. So findet der »Betrachter« in den Arbeiten einen
Moment der Freiheit, sowohl gegenüber den äußeren Bedingungen als auch gegenüber den inneren
selbst auferlegten Restriktionen.
Das individuelle Erlebnis entwickelt sich frei und unbeeinflusst aus uns selbst. Dabei bleibt es immer
einzigartig, denn es lässt sich weder wiederholen, noch überprüfen oder hinterfragen. Es passiert und
ist im gleichen Augenblick vorüber. Man kann es immer wieder erleben, aber nicht wiederholen, denn
es wird immer anders sein. Es ist nur da, während man es erlebt. Man kann es nicht vorhersagen und
schon gar nicht reproduzieren. Man kann es nicht festhalten, man muss sich Zeit nehmen, es zu
erleben.
Christophe Laudamiel ist der jüngste Neuzugang der Berliner mianki. Gallery. Jakob Kupfer wird seit
2010 von der Galerie vertreten. Die Zusammenarbeit der beiden Künstler für diese Ausstellung wird
völlig neue visuell-olfaktorische Erlebnisse möglich machen.
