F RESNO C YCLING C LUB T HE R OUGH D RAFT V OLUME XXXXII , I SSUE 5 M AY 2012 S PECIAL T HE P REZ S EZ ! Happy 50th Anniversary Fresno Cycling Club! We have been enjoying some incredible bicycling weather so far this year, it is great to see so many bicyclist out riding and so many newbies taking up the sport. We enjoy a lot of diversity in the Valley. We have charitable organizations that recruit and train bicyclists to do Century rides while helping raise funds for good causes, we have racing teams that serve to foster the appetites of competitive bicyclists; there are the triathletic organizations that build the total athlete where bicycling is just a portion of their sport. There are BMX groups, Bike Polo groups and Mountain bike groups, all with the same goal - to provide an outlet for people to get out and exercise, have fun and be a part of all things bicycling. To that end the Fresno Cycling Club is here for all bicyclists whether you’re involved in a specialty group or not. The Fresno Cycling Club is the longest standing group of Bicyclists in the Central Valley and hopes to be here for many years to come. Club membership is important for uniting the Bicycling Community to provide a conduit for communication and education, as well as provide more bicycling opportunities and a stronger voice when dealing with legislation and infrastructure issues. FROM PAGE 1 2012 FCC President Dennis Ball voice within the community we can have a greater impact on how drivers come to understand how to share the roads with us. Always ride safe and follow the rules of the road, ride like you would want others to ride when you’re driving your car, don't run red lights or stop signs in front of other traffic, and don't ride two to three abreast when traffic is behind you. Be courteous to drivers and they will tend to be courteous back. Remember there are always a few bad apples in every group whether bicyclists or motorists but don't let them influence your behavior. I can't help but notice the increase in Bicycle vs Auto/ motorcycle/cow accidents lately. Fortunately most of the injuries have been survivable. But it does bring up the point that Bicyclists must ride defensively and be alert at all times and most importantly ALWAYS wear your helmet. Several of the surviving Bicyclists would have had much more severe, if not fatal, injuries had they not been wearing their helmets. Don't be afraid to make your presence in the roadway obvious. It is better to be seen and avoided than to not be seen and run over. Be safe! Our ACSL rides continue to be a big success with April's ride being the largest as well as the hottest. It is great to be able to do these rides as they give us a chance to meet other club members and develop new riding groups. Spread the word and get all your riding buddies to come out and join us for our great rides. May is National Bike Month and there will be a multitude of opportunities to get out and ride your bike starting off with the Clubs own Kirch Flat Century and Metric Century on May 5. Then the Clovis Centennial Century and rides on May 12th, the California Classic Century and rides on May 19, and the May ACSLR on May 26th. Plus the ride calendar is full of great rides, like the monthly Belmont TT on May 10th. Have a month, great A LL L EVEL C LUB R IDE - CONT . By Dennis Ball P AGE 3 V OLUME XXXXII , I SSUE 5 B LOSSOM TRAIL CAFÉ TO BALCH CAMP This past month, I had the pleasure of riding with a group of friends who are training for the Tour de Cure in Napa. Our group leader, Jerry Ferdolage, decide a ride to Balch Camp would be a great climbing workout, so without knowing the exact mileage or the elevation gain, we followed our fearless leader, upward and onward. We started our trek with 10 riders: Diana Durham, Kelly Pebbles, Mike & Peggy Murphy, Nancy Ellis, Stephen Lewis, Susan Smith, and Lillian. Approx. 25 miles into our ride, a few of the cyclist decided to turn back due to time constraints. The five remaining cyclist were Jerry, Lillian, Nancy E, Stephen, and m y s e l f . The ride followed the Kings River and had some amazing views of Left to right: Stephen Lewis, Mike Murphy, Peggy Murphy, Kelly Pebbles, Nancy Ellis, Jerry Ferdolage, and Nancy Sumaya. the snowcapped mountains to the east. Atop one of the longest climbs, we discovered “Cell Site.” We were all quite happy that Jerry had a signal because he was able to call his wife, Katherine, to SAG and bring us some extra water and snacks, as we were unprepared for such a long ride. After 60 miles in the saddle, Katherine came to our rescue with lots of goodies and w a t e r . This ride will be a memorable one for me because the climbs were great for training, I spent the day with great cycling friends, the views were amazing, and I had the pleasure of riding with Nancy Ellis for her first century!! I was looking forward to the Climb to Kaiser that year after a good climb in 2010. Bob Lindsey Stats: Cycling since … 2005 Longest one day ride … 200 miles (Davis & Solvang Doubles) Favorite local ride…….. C2K (2010 12:08) Current cycling goal….. C2K 2013 Lead 1983 Boston Marathon First 5 miles Marathoner Turned Cyclist A sore left calf was the only symptom other than I could no longer hold the line cycling with my friends. In Jan 2011, I came down with pneumonia. No big deal, I could rest a few weeks and back to cycling, LOL. In March 2011, I did the Solvang double in the rain riding with Ron Q and Tom April 2011 I did some Old Tollhouse and 4 lane rides with Tom Brainer and Bob Hervatine. I was having a sore left calf but this is training for CTK, let’s do it. I noticed I was now the weak link of the group in training. I did the CTK Climb Trial in less than 53 minutes in 2010. NOW, I couldn't stay in my friends wake on Tollhouse or the 4 lane? I didn’t seem to have any lung capacity? “What's going on?” I wond e r e d . I went out on a Wednesday (APRIL 20) with Tom and Dennis to Shaw and Academy, then up towards the corrals to wildcat. I could not keep up. I was eating their dust and I couldn't even keep them in sight. I called my wife Marjorie and asked her to call my doctor to set up an appointment for me. I was concerned my pneumonia was back. She asked to come and get me, I said, “No! It's only 30 miles home, no problem.” I didn’t have any pain, only a sore calf. I had run 117 marathons, sore calves were normal for me. I went home and took a shower and then looked down at my left calf. “That can't be good?” I thought. It looked like a football! “I should probably ask the doctor if that is serious”, I thought to my self. It was serious, as a heart attack! My life had just stopped o n a d ime . I was diagnosed with a Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) in other words; I had a blood clot in my left femur vein. This doesn't happen to aerobic types! This only happens to couch potatoes”, or so I thought, until I Googled D V T . I spent 331 days out of commission. It was very serious because the choices are: Coumadin (Rat Poison) 331 days for me, if the clot breaks away and goes to the lungs, I would suff er a pulmonary embolism (best chance). If it were to go to the brain, the result is a stroke. If it goes to the heart, it’s game over! I converted a cycling bike so I could at least do aerobics using my arms, hey, it was better than nothing! I thank God I was able to do t h a t . I wasn't cleared for golf for 4 months. You don't realize how much you miss something until it’s gone. I missed the Prather Rides, Humphrey Station, Old Tollhouse, Spring Valley, Walker Grade, Davis and the Climb to Kaiser, and just riding with my friends! Today, I am free of my DVT and do not have the DVT gene. (Thank God) The doctors think I pushed myself too hard after pneumonia and dehydration coupled with my 37 BPM resting heart rate increased my risk factor for DVT. They don't really know why it happened to me. It is only their theory. However, they are probably on the mark! My advice, it is better to overhydrate than take a chance with dehydration. I'm feel lucky and am looking forward to cycling and getting back in shape. I hate being at square one, but, square one is better than square zero, if you catch my drift! Hey the weak link is back? Climb to Kaiser 2013! If you’re on a bike I'll ride with you, don't ever take cycling for granted. If you ride you're a winner! Remember, everyone is faster than the weak link! It isn't how fast you ride, it is the fact that you ride! Let's Rock and Roll! See you on the road! By Bob Lindsey P AGE 5 V OLUME XXXXII , I SSUE 5 F RESNO CYCLING CLUB — THE BEGINNING : P ART IV As mentioned in last month’s installment, we’re still covering the club’s activities during it’s earliest years. This month we’ll be covering activities listed in my two newsletters from 1963. The following article titled “Touring,” was on page 2 of Volume 2, No. 1 of The Grapevine. “Sunday March the 3rd. The unconquerable Tour De Friant was held. As usual, after twenty miles of sweat and blood, everyone stopped at the café in Friant. As everyone left, the group spread out again. On the long way around, at the top of the steepest grade, Bob Leach, Kenny Hanna, Ron Sevier, John Albright, Steve Young, Jim McCrory, and a few others lined up for a coasting contest. John Albright led off fast and led all the way until the uphill after the store on the Auberry Road. The final winner was not decided. Everyone was happy to see Tony Zulim following us, so we stopped to talk to him and wait for the rest of the riders. Everyone went their own way after Danny Jelladian won the sprint to Norm’s drive-in and as usual ate the most.” On the same page was an article titled “SAN JOSE TRACK OPENS,” and since I once raced on that same track in the late-70's, it holds particular significance for me. But we’re trying to cover the Fresno Cycling Club’s activities, so I’ll save that one for another time. The next article was titled “MONTHLY CLUB MEETING.” And as usual, the following is a complete quote from that page: “It was decided that quarter mile sprints would fill the vacant spot in the club schedule for Sunday the 24th. The sprints last week proved to be quite a success. Directions - Go west on Bullard Ave. till you get to the Santa Fe railroad tracks! Turn right just after you cross the tracks and go North about two blocks. This will be the starting spot. Meet at 10:20 AM. B.A.R. [best all round?] points will be awarded.” “The Fresno Cycling Club’s Kearney Park Picnic was rescheduled for March 31, 1963. Games for the entire family will begin at 11:00 AM, and the potluck dinner will start at 3:00 PM. Prices are $.25 per club member. Bring the rest of the family for a lot of food and fun.” “The highlight of the meeting was a story by Bob “Speedin’ ” Weedin entitled “The Auberry Road Adventure.” Although the following column’s article titled “WEEDIN ON RACING,” is about racing, it still gives us more of a picture of what the club’s activities were like in ‘62 & ‘63. I think you’ll see what I mean: “Racing is an individual sport where the best man wins. The best man doesn’t win by “sitting in” on the pack and then taking the sprint in the last hundred yards. I am making specific reference to the club races at Fort Washington. “Sitting in” and taking the minimum of pace has no place in the club races. Each and everyone of the boys should give a 100% maximum effort all through the race. These club races are for the benefit of the individual improvement of each rider. This method I have just described will put you in top shape for the ABL of A races.” And that little statement was followed by the following: “Notice! 1. AS OF MAY 1, 1963 ALL RIDERS PARTICIPATING IN CLUB RACES MUST WEAR A CRASH HELMET! 2. NO RIDER WILL BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN A RACE AS OF MAY 1, 1963 IF HE HAS NOT TURNED IN AN ENTRY BLANK SIGNED BY A PARENT!” Sound familiar? Remember that the helmets mentioned were what we call “hairnets” and were made of padded leather straps. These helmets were still all that was available when I began racing 10-years later in ‘73. By Mark Perkins P AGE 6 V OLUME XXXXII , I SSUE 5 M EMBER RIDE REPORT : S OLVANG D OUBLE On Friday, Karen and I headed off for the Solvang Double. So excited to attempt our first double; we were all giggles. Full of advice from friends, plans were made. We even filled the hotel frig with takeout for a late night pasta feed after the event. We met up with Kim, Nick & Chris and 50 -100 other riders for the 5 a.m.start. What a sight! All those bikes -- headlights and red taillights in the dark of night. The group stayed together, at a nice safe pace, 14mph, until we hit the climb on Foxen Canyon Rd. Dawn brought gray skies, green hillsides and vineyards. Nick & Chris, picked up the pace. Before long our average speed was over 15mph. At mile 39, 7:30am, drafting behind the tandem, going 24mph, I broke a spoke!@#*! The sag truck hauled me the next two miles to CP1. Karen & Kim proceeded on, drafting behind the tandem. Karen had brought an extra spoke, but it didn’t fit my bike. Turns out the spoke nipples are inside my rims, so we couldn’t even attempt to straighten the wheel. Julie, a sag driver, used her iphone to search for bike shops. The shops, 10 miles down the road in Santa Maria, didn’t open till 10am. There was a shop in SLO that opened at 9:30, but if she sagged me that far forward, I’d be disqualified. By 9:15 I was sitting in the sun, outside Main Street Cycles, a nice looking shop. However, it didn’t seem to have a huge inventory and wasn’t going to be open on Sunday. I thought my best bet, was to borrow a wheel and return the next day to exchange it. To complicate matters, I only had $20. A guy walking down the street, stopped, listened to my dilemma. He felt another shop, about a mile across town might be more flexible. Off I went, walking in my cleats, carrying the bike since the rear wheel wouldn’t roll at all. Before long, a small pickup stopped and asked if I needed a ride. He told me my shoes were hard to walk in. LOL The donut box was moved to the back seat, I jumped in. The next bike shop was going to be open on Sunday, but didn’t look like they’d be able to help me, mostly kids bikes and cruisers, only a few road bikes. Donut dude knew of another shop that had worked on his mtn bike. We arrived at Pedal Power at 9:45. I could see someone it the back of the shop. The owner, Chuck, open the door to my plea “Can you HELP ME, please!!!" He fabricated a spoke that would fit my bike and by 10:15 I was back on the road. I returned to the course. Was there any chance of drafting the R Hoff / Ron Q tandem which started at 7:30? No! 3hrs for 50 miles! I was DFL but not DNF, with 150 miles to go, just over 11 hrs to get there. Weather forecast of headwinds and possible rain. Time for Plan B, just haul ass! If I stuck with an easy, ride all day pace, I’d never make the 10pm cutoff. I was going to have to push myself. The road into SLO must have been downhill with a tailwind. I passed 4 riders and managed 17-24mph to CP2. Gray clouds in far off distance. From there the route went west to Morro Bay, then turned south to Los Osos into the headwind, with a mix of head and cross winds back to SLO for the lunch stop at CP3. Inhaled a sandwich, portaloo, more Hammer go juice in water bottle. Just as I was ready to get back on the bike, a girl I had passed at Cuesta College came up to me and said she was going to drop out of the event and "would I ride with her friend?" !!!! I hate to think of what the expression on my face must have looked like. I informed her I was ready to leave. 2:30pm, 90miles, 7.5hrs to go = 2.5 hrs for each 30 mile section. I continued on, passing riders here and there. Remember, after my mechanical, the entire field was in front of me. Beautiful view of Pacific Ocean and cross winds thru Shell Beach and Pismo Beach, where I caught up to 4 guys from So Cal. I thought I might have finally found someone I could ride with. But they were having trouble holding a pace line, kept getting strung out, I passed them too. Shortly after that, 3 of them passed me on a big climb into the headwind. They must have dropped their weakest link. HWY 1 dropped down into this huge valley. You could see for miles, nothing to block the wind. NWS recorded sustained winds of 15-20mph, with gusts to 26. Reached Gonzales CP4, 4:45. So Cal boys were still here. I had 60 miles & 5hrs to go, which usually would be a piece of cake. However, with the headwind, I’d only been able to do 810mph. More math -- at this pace I needed 6 hrs to finish! Gray clouds were moving in. My solo slugfest into the wind continued. Never did find a rider to draft with. Sag van passed, loaded with bikes. Were the So Cal boys inside? Speed dropped to 6mph P AGE 7 V OLUME XXXXII , I SSUE 5 Cont. from page 6 A PRIL C LUB M EETING R ECAP climbing a hill. Pedaling downhill, into the wind, I was able to do 15mph -- felt like I was flying. Getting concerned about being on the road, alone, after dark. When I rolled into CP5, 7:00 pm, was happy to see tons of people. The most I’d seen since CP1. Started the final leg as the sun set. Climbing back up Foxen Canyon I was in a group of a dozen riders. 8:30, 20 miles to go. Wouldn’t check time or distance again until the finish. Winds weren’t as bad in the hills, but still present at the crest of climbs. Scary descent down Ballard Canyon. My helmet light was starting to dim. Got dropped by the large group. With about 5 miles to go, my helmet light went out. I still had a headlight, but it wasn’t near as bright as I needed. A rider came up behind me and was kind enough to guide me thru the remainder of the ride. Three miles to go, downhill, Garmin signals right turn. Someone next to me mentioned they missed this turn last year. Finished 9:43, 188.7 miles, 14 hrs, excluding the mechanical. Back at the hotel; champagne, more giggles, hot shower, lasagna, red wine, lights out, sound of rain drops falling. My thanks to God, Julie, donut dude, Chuck at Pedal Power, guiding light guy, Garmin and all those rooting for me! 1 DOWN, 2 TO GO! By Ann Heniniger Also speaking at our last club meeting, Tom Cotter and Sam Geil presented the National Bike Ride for Sustainable Solutions, Climate Ride of California. If you can shine a light on the origin of the name, please send me a note. I got the name from its Strava segment and have heard a number of other cyclists use the name as well. I recall my first trip up this hill many years ago. It was on a borrowed bike and I had no clue how to shift the gears. It was a steel Peugeot and the gear shifters were on the down tube, you know, where the water bottle is supposed to go! Looking back I realize I rode up the hill in the big ring. With a compact crank and a 28 in the back most cyclists can make this climb without too much trouble but only the fittest of cyclist would want to try it in the big ring. [email protected] and mention Woogie Hill in the subject. Cycling Etiquette So you’ve come to a four way stop at the same time as an automobile, who has the right of way? Sure, the CA Vehicle code says the person on the right, but the correct answer is “the person in the 2 ton automobile”! Part of etiquette is common sense and in this case common sense tells us that when a 2 ton vehicle meets a 21lb vehicle in the middle of an intersection, the car wins! Safety first!
