A word from the Chairman
Hi to all members old and new. I do hope most of the old
membership have renewed their subscriptions for another
year, many I know cannot always get to meetings. We are
trying to address this issue by trying various days and
times, the AGM turnout was poor; so Saturday mornings
are obviously difficult and the turn out for the Volvo
presentation was only saved by the intervention of Darren
Bemrose bringing along 6 guests to the presentation.
I do urge members that have renewed to try and get to as
many meetings as possible the subjects are varied and
quite enlightening also a chance to meet other members
and discuss work related issues, we are a plant orientated
association some among the gatherings maybe able to
help with a particular problem.
Your committee is continuing to work hard to provide up
to date presentations on a variety of subjects, but if you
feel you may be able to provide a presentation ( this is
aimed at those members that provide services /
consumables) please contact one of the committee, or you
have an idea for a meeting all help is appreciated.
I hope to see many of you at Hillhead where CMPE have
a stand at which I shall spend some time.
I shall also be attending the national AGM in June to get a
flavour of what direction the CMPE as a whole is going.
Once again do try to attend business meetings at some
point I’d like to see Yorkshire branch prosper

Case opens industry-leading customer demonstration centre
Case Construction Equipment opened a dedicated global customer centre in
Monthyon, north of Paris, on 16 October 2009. It has been my privilege to visit the
€3 million Case Customer Centre Paris which provides an opportunity for customers
from around the world to
experience the full range of Case construction equipment, in real job site working
conditions.
The centre includes 1,900sq m of showrooms, an auditorium, a
restaurant and workshops, and is set in the heart of 16ha of
specifically designed working zones. It will allow customers a unique opportunity to
find ideal equipment solutions to meet the needs of their individual job site
requirements. Customers will be able to try the full range of Case construction
equipment in four working zones,
dedicated to compact machinery, materials handling, mass excavation and quarrying.
“The customer will never leave this site with unanswered questions”, says general
manager Tony Walton.
Rather than simply demonstrating machinery in a show format, Case will put the
equipment to customer specific uses, demonstrating model
suitability for individual tasks. Customers will be able to try the
equipment themselves, simulating their job site needs and finding the right machine
for the task. At the heart of the new centre is an 80-seat glass fronted auditorium that
faces onto the main demonstration area. This will allow comfortable viewing in all
weather conditions, throughout the year.

Working together to provide your ideal machinery solutions
The Case Customer Centre has been designed around you, the
customer.
Whatever your jobsite requirements, Case Construction Equipment can
provide tailored solutions to suit your specific applications. With a range of
four industry-specific demonstration zones on site, the full line of Case
equipment, qualified demonstrators and product specialists, we can recreate
your jobsite and demonstrate how working in partnership with Case can save
you time and money.
As part of the Case family, we want you to benefit from a truly productive
and enjoyable visit. Whatever the application, wherever you need productive
and innovative machinery solutions, Case has the equipment, the attachments
and the experience to meet your needs and exceed your expectations.
On a more personal note I'd like to thank dealers Warwick Ward, especially
Simon Causier for inviting me along for the 2 day trip. Thoroughly
recommended and the night cruise along the river through Paris whilst dinning
was exceptional. Finally to all the staff at Monthyon and the case
representatives congratulations on providing an entertaining hands on
experience

New Volvo Immingham
Customer Support Centre opens
The expanded Volvo Construction Equipment facility in Immingham has been officially
opened by Chris Rees, the President of Volvo CE in Europe and Anders Barreng, the VP
of Sales in Europe. Volvo customers in the Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire
and Yorkshire area can now benefit from having a much-improved Customer Support
Centre situated on the same site as the company’s established New Machine Preparation
Centre.
The smart new Customer Support Centre at Immingham now sets the standard for the
planned upgrading of other Volvo CE support facilities in Great Britain. It represents a
vast improvement over the previous facility in Barnsley which it has replaced.
Having decided that its Barnsley base was no longer appropriate for the future business,
Volvo looked at alternatives and decided that expanding
Immingham to become a
fully-fledged Customer Support Centre was the best option from both practical and cost
perspectives. Ten office-based positions have transferred to the new facility in order to
maintain operational continuity and, most importantly, local back up continues
unchanged through the established network of field-based service engineers.
Volvo’s National Service Manager Glynn Redshaw says, “The telephone has moved but
field support is unaltered because our strategically placed mobile service engineers
continue to travel to jobs from their homes within the area.” It is indicative of the
importance placed by Volvo on providing good technical expertise that the headcount at
Immingham includes twelve mobile engineers. Amongst the personnel based at the
Immingham depot are two Service Co-ordinators whose duties include monitoring
CareTrack equipped machines in their area. The CareTrack telematics system, now
included as standard on all larger Volvo excavators and wheel loaders as well as
articulated haulers and graders, provides invaluable management information, security
features, remote troubleshooting, alarms and warnings. The Service Coordinators find the
system invaluable in ensuring that scheduled services are always carried out on time.
13
The man in charge at Immingham is Kevin Stones who has moved from Barnsley to
continue as Customer Support Centre Manager – a role he has held since 2006. Kevin
first joined Volvo’s Barnsley depot in 1987 as a workshop engineer. After promotion to
workshop supervisor he was selected to establish and run the new Immingham facility on
a green field site only five miles from the docks where the majority of Volvo machines
now enter Great Britain.
The enhanced dual-purpose facility at Immingham covers a six-acre site with a nine bay
workshop and two internal wash bays – one for new machines and the other for ‘dirty’
units coming in for repair. The three bay repair workshop is equipped with a 6.0 tonne
capacity overhead crane to handle components such as engines and transmissions during
machine overhauls.
There is also a parts store with some 1000 line items. This provides fast-moving parts to
local customers as well as the items such as tool kits and beacons needed to complete the
inventory on all the new machines being prepared on the site.
To equip the building for its enhanced role as the local Customer Support Centre, Kevin
Stones supervised the erection of a front extension that provides extra office space, a
proper reception area and a trade parts counter. In carrying out this work, he and Glynn
Redshaw paid particular attention to creating a pleasant working environment for the staff
and a welcoming atmosphere for visitors.
Within the extended office complex is a fully equipped conference room that can
comfortably seat up to 20 people. Customers wanting to hold their own management
meetings in the area have already booked this useful facility. It has also been used most
effectively as the venue for a business meeting staged by the Yorkshire branch of the
Contractors Mechanical Plant Engineers (CMPE). The office complex has a Compass
Training Room where Volvo staff can carry out self-learning as part of the company’s
online training scheme. This is particularly useful for engineers who need to keep abreast
of the latest machine developments.
14
Immingham is the central holding area for buckets and attachments for Volvo
Construction Equipment in the UK. All attachments are fully tested and the engineers at
Immingham are well versed in carrying out all the thorough examinations required under
current legislation. The company is particularly proud of its ability to conduct testing and
inspection in accordance with the demands of both LOLER (the Lifting Operations and
Lifting Equipment Regulations) but also PUWER (Provision and Use of Work
Equipment). This work can be done either at the depot or on site - a big benefit to many
customers.
The expanded Immingham facility has been fully operational since the end of last year.
Staffed by a total of 43 people (including the field-based engineers) it has all the
resources needed to fulfil its twin roles as the local customer support centre and the
national new machine preparation centre. Glynn Redshaw says, “We have made a big
investment in this site and that clearly sends out the strong message we are here to stay
and that we continue to provide full product support.”

CMPE Certificate of Competence
for Plant Operators
What is the CMPE Certificate of Competence?
The CMPE Plant Operators' Certificate of Competence was introduced in 1983 to
promote the safer use of plant and is the only independent and traceable system which
acknowledges an operator's ability and experience.
Why was it developed?
The introduction of the CDM Regulations placed duties upon clients, designers and
contractors which have highlighted the importance of competence. Site Agents and
Managers now demand proof of competence before allowing any activity to commence
on site. A plant operator with a CMPE Certificate of Competence and a current Safety
Awareness Certificate gives confidence on site that every reasonable effort has been
made to ensure that the work they are being employed to do will be carried out SAFELY.
Why you should choose the CMPE Certificate of Competence
There are a number of reasons why you should choose to join the CMPE CoC Scheme,
even although there are no mandatory card schemes in the UK or Europe, the CMPE
COC will ensure you comply with your legal obligations under European law.
What are your Legal Obligations to train?
Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (HASWA 1974), it is the responsibility of
all employers to ensure that their plant operators are trained. And, under the Provision
and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER 1998) it is the responsibility of
employers to ensure that their plant operators are competent.
Who runs the CoC Scheme?
Unlike other many card schemes, the CMPE COC is run for the benefit of the plant
operator; financial gain is very low on the list of priorities! The scheme is run by a
sub-committee of the CMPE National Council with the National Registrar acting as the
sub-committee's chairperson.

Yorkshire branch News
Yorkshire branch would like to express their thanks to Leon White for arranging
our visit to the new site Volvo CE Immingham depot/MPC. The visit I know took
some arranging due to the constraints of Volvo wanting to have there own grand
opening. It was worth the wait. On arrival drinks were provided followed by a brief
insight in to Volvo and all its businesses around the world. Following a brief break
Martyn Brawn gave an in depth look at what Volvo are doing to meet the next
stages in engine emission controls an interesting and very informative
presentation. Following on was the customer support centres manager Kevin
Stones with an over view of the development of the site and its purpose within
the Volvo Construction group.
He then went on to give us a tour of the facility and future developments of the
site.
A very good buffet style lunch was laid on followed by a more informal discussion
between CMPE members and the presentation team.
Once again thanks to Leon for arranging the day and Kevin for allowing us an
insight in to his domain

THE FINAL INSPECTION
The soldier stood and faced God, Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining, Just as brightly as his brass.
'Step forward now, you soldier, How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek? To My Church have you been true?'
The soldier squared his shoulders and said, 'No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry guns, Can't always be a saint.
I've had to work most Sundays, And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I've been violent, Because the world is awfully rough.
But, I never took a penny, That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime, When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help, Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God, forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place, Among the people here.
They never wanted me around, Except to calm their fears.
If you've a place for me here, Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much, But if you don't, I'll understand.
There was a silence all around the throne, Where the saints had often trod.
As the soldier waited quietly, For the judgment of his God.
'Step forward now, you soldier, You've borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets, You've done your time in Hell.'
