June 9, 2015 Curriculum & Instruction Committee Meeting Minutes
Chairperson: Mrs. Liz Schneider
Board Members in Attendance: Tracy Barusevicius, Nancy Fronduti, Nancy
Mackrides, Sue Nolen, Bill O’Donnell, Liz Schneider
Also in Attendance: Anne Callahan, Grace Eves, Patti Linden, Steve Taylor, Jim Wigo,
and several members of the community.
Preview of Professional Development Contracts for 2015-2016. Dr. Taylor asked
the Board’s approval for a contract with The Educator Collaborative to provide four days
of professional development, each at $1,500 (plus travel) plus two additional hours of
online consultation, each at $250, for the Springton Lake Language Arts Department
during the 2015-2016 school year. Funds to pay for this professional development are
in the 2015-2016 budget.
Action: This item will appear on the June 25, 2015 Legislative Agenda for a vote of the
Board.
Dr. Taylor also previewed two other agreements that won’t become available until later
in the summer, but which will need approval at the August Legislative Meeting. These
are agreements with the University of Oregon to use DIBELS assessments in 20152016 and with HMH for professional development on September 2nd for the new Big
Ideas Math program.
Action: These items will appear on the August 27, 2015 Legislative Agenda for a vote
of the Board.
Update on Algebra II. Dr. Taylor informed the Board of the decision by the Penncrest
Math Department to hold off on the purchase of new Algebra II materials for another
year following a webinar last week on the series they intended to purchase. During the
webinar, they concluded the series would start beyond students’ level of preparation
and that it would be too difficult for the level 3 students. Given the new Algebra I
program, these issues should dissipate by 2016-2017. There were also some gaps in
the promised technology that concerned the teachers. They will reopen the search for a
new series in time for the 2016-2017 budget process. In the meantime, they will use
current materials, which they would like to supplement in 3 Algebra II with the online
program Math IXL for 2015-2016. The total cost is only approximately $382.
Action: This item will appear on the June 25, 2015 Legislative Agenda for a vote of the
Board.
Post-Graduation Plans for Class of 2015. Dr. Taylor shared a handout with plans for
each member of the Class of 2015.

Steinway Piano
Craig Synder gave a presentation on the purchase of a new Steinway piano.
The Save Our Steinway organization has raised $17,000 towards the purchase
of a new Steinway. They will continue to fundraise. Fundraising efforts by other
Delaware County school districts include a large donation to Upper Darby 10
years ago for the purchase of a Steinway. Marple Newtown is currently fund
raising for the full cost of a Steinway. Their district is not contributing. Radnor
Township school district had a Steinway donated to the school. Garnet Valley
school district had a fund raiser and paid for a portion for their non-Steinway
piano. The Board approved the purchase of a Steinway. The administration will
review bid requirements for this purchase with the District’s solicitor as the cost of
the piano will exceed $85,000.

Contracts
Verizon Wireless GPS
• The District currently has 40 GPS units installed on buses. The
contract is for the purchase an additional 34 units which will
complete the fleet for a total of 74 units. The monthly fee is $24.95
which is a $2.00 reduction from last years contract.
IM Pools
• The contract is for life guards and maintenance for the pool at
Springton Lake Middle School for 2 years in the amount of $40,800
per year. This represents an increase over their current contract
amount. The increase is mainly due to the cost of liability insurance
for the vendor. The contract is less expensive than hiring someone
to train life guards, schedule guards and run the pool.
Copiers
• The current 36 month lease with Xerox expires in August. The
administration received quotes from 3 vendors that participate with
cooperative purchasing agreements. Fraser Business has the
lowest lease for a monthly cost of $8,338.76 compared to Xerox’s
current rate of $10,594.
Heartland
• The contract provides the opportunity for parents to add funds to
their child’s food service account at 3.95%. Heartland will not
accept American Express. The District currently uses Global. The
fees the district pays have increased. The administration will review
the process for checks being deposited into student accounts.

Cades
• Provides transportation services for summer ESY program. The
rates are $71.22 per student/day for round trips and $40.50 for oneway trips. There is a 2% increase over last year.
Elwyn-The District has not received this contract at the time of the
meeting. Elwyn provides services to students that reside at Elwyn and
receive educational services. The District bills the sending school
districts. This is a pass through expense.
Be Proud- The District has not received this contract at the time of the
meeting. The Be Proud Day Treatment Foundation program is run by the
Delaware County Intermediate Unit and provides services to students.
The District bills the sending school districts. This is a pass through

Food Service Policy
In accordance with the US Department of Agriculture regulations the District is
required to have a charge policy. The District’s policy will allow the students to
have a negative balance of no more than $10. Students will be offered peanut
butter and jelly or cheese sandwich or an allergen free lunch and milk if there is a
negative balance. This policy meets the requirements and gives parents the
opportunity to keep their children’s accounts current and receive a few meals.
The District is required to make payment to the food service fund for any
negative balances. The district will bill the parents in an effort to collect the bad
debt. As of June 1st there was approximately $545 in negative balances in the
food service account. Parents receive email notifications when their child’s
account has a low balance. An effort was made to collect the negative balances
the fund during the last two weeks of school. Many parents made contact this
week to pay off their balances. This policy will become part of the District’s

The proposal for 2015 miscellaneous repairs at SLMS represents the incomplete
punch list items from the SLMS project for approximately $9,000. The proposal
for 2015 capital projects at SLMS for the guardrails and tennis court updates is
approximately $13,000 plus reimbursable expenses. The proposal for 2015

Currently, between meetings of the School Board, the Board Secretary has
authorization to approve change orders up to $10,000. Change orders between
$10,000 and $20,000 require the approval of the Board President, VicePresident, and Finance Chairman. The Administration is seeking an increase the
amount for approval between Legislative meetings from the Board President,
Vice-President and Finance Chairman to $50,000 for the time period between the
June and September 2015 Legislative meetings. This will help to ensure project
schedules continue during the summer months. The Operations committee
chairman will be advised on all change orders.
Action: This item will be moved to the June 25, 2015 Legislative meeting for a
vote of the Board.
5.
Use of Facilities –
a. Sundays- Policy 707 currently prohibits the use of facilities on Sundays
without Board approval. However, over the past several years the Board
has given approval for the rental of buildings on Sundays.
Action: This item will be moved to the June 25, 2015 Legislative meeting for a
vote of the Board.
b. Fees-Discussion was started for changing Policy 707’s fee schedule for
the use of the turf field and track after they are completed. The committee
reviewed the fee schedules from several other school districts in April.
Several factors were reviewed. Policy 707 lists Group C as a community
organization comprised of 75% RTMSD members/residents that is a nonDedicated to Excellence
profit and group D as a non-community organization comprised of less
than 75% of RTMSD members/residents or is organized as a for-profit.
The current schedule lists the other fields as daily or seasonal. All groups
will be charged a fee based on 30 minute increments. Group C will be
charged at a lower rate than Group D. The field will close at 6:30 for
rentals. There will be limits on sound systems and music.
There is a $25 fee for field clean up if the field is not cleaned up by the
organization. No one from the District will be required to be on site during
rentals. There will be a $40 per hour custodial fee for cleaning, opening
and closing the bathrooms. A custodian will be responsible for making
sure the bathrooms are locked at the end of the day.

seeking a different venue this year because they currently hold the
performance at Weidner University, but Weidner will be under
construction.
Action: The administration will show both sites to the ballet for the performance
in December.

I. Legislative Items
The Committee had questions about two items that appeared on the agenda appointing
teachers to lead clubs for the 2014-2015 school year. They wanted to know why we
were making this recommendation at this time. Mrs. Callahan told them that she had
not received the paperwork until last week and did not know the clubs were taking
place. The chair of the committee directed the Mrs. Callahan to speak with the
principals about getting paperwork in prior to the activity. In the future, if paperwork is
not submitted prior to the activity, the Board will not approve the payment.
Action: The committee agreed to place Resolutions for these items on the agenda of
the June 25, 2015, Legislative meeting for a vote of the Board.
II. MTS Contract
The administration had asked for approval of a contract with MTS Software Solutions to
digitalize archived personnel files. The item was tabled in May because the Committee
wanted more information on having searchable files.
Robert Iorio of MTS was present at the meeting to discuss with the Committee the
benefits and cost feasibility of creating searchable files. He did not recommend this
approach for the type of files we have and for our use. Members of the Committee felt
differently about the future needs for these files. Mr. Iorio stated that he could copy the
files to digital media now and would give the district a proposal to create searchable
files in the future. The Committee agreed to allow the district to move forward with the
alphabetical form of digital files and to seek a proposal to convert the files to searchable
files at a later date.

SCHOOL REPORT’S – June 25, 2015
GLENWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Kindergarten
The Kindergarten had fun at Letter People Day. They demonstrated all of the things they
have learned throughout the year. Two end of year field trips were when we visited a
working dairy farm (Milky Way Farm) and the Rocky Run YMCA, where we had our
Kindergarten “field day.”
First Grade
First grade just completed our “Reading Across Genres to Learn About a Topic” unit. We
formed book clubs to learn about different pets and zoo animals. As experienced readers
we used fiction, non-fiction, and poetry to learn new information. We crated posters to
display the new information that we learned. Then, we presented our posters to our
classmates. As a culminating activity we visited the zoo to see many of these animals in
person. Our zoo trip was a huge success!
Second Grade
We are anxiously awaiting the metamorphosis of our chrysalises to butterflies! It should
happen any day now. The students have been recording their observations of larval
growth as well as transformations to the pupa stage. We have discussed the reality of
less than 100% survival rate in all branches of the animal kingdom, as some of the
caterpillars do not fully develop.
Third Grade
The third grade is currently wrapping up our last unit of study in Reader’s Workshop that
focuses on Social Issues. Students thought about many different social issues, discussed
how empathy plays a part in their character’s development, and discussed how
characters change over time. We also reflected on how many of the social issues can be
found in our own world and how we can learn from our texts.
Fourth Grade
Fourth Grade has a inspirational and educational trip to Historic Philadelphia this
month. Highlights include going to the National Constitution Center and seeing the Liberty
Bell. We visited Betsy Ross, and learned about her life and what life was like in the late
1700’s. We visited Christ Church Cemetery, and learned about the Signers of the

Constitution that were buried there (including Ben Franklin.) It was an educationally
fulfilling experience for all.
Fifth Grade
In June, the fifth grade held its annual graduation ceremony and graduation party.
There will also be a “clap out” on the last day of the school year to honor fifth grade
students. Also, the fifth grade is finishing up its work on writing of memoirs in Writer’s
Workshop. In Reader’s Workshop, the fifth grade classes are finishing up work on the
reading of fantasy novels and also reading works by our favorite authors. In science, the
students are continuing to look at natural catastrophic events that occur on our planet, in
particular earthquakes, hurricanes and tornadoes. In social studies, students continues to
look at life in 19th century America.
Library
Students will be exchanging gently used books as part of the Glenwood Book Exchange.
Students will also be developing listening and focusing skills by playing Silent Pow Wow
in an inflatable bubble.
Glenwood Visits Lima Estates Retirement Center
Glenwood students and teachers in Betsy Hennessey’s class, along with Art teacher,
Keith Sharp, recently visited the residents and staff at Lima Estates Retirement Center.
Students and residents worked together to create flower wreaths while sharing stories
about their lives. Wreaths were used to decorate the resident's doors. The residents and
students also played trivia and sang songs together.
INDIAN LANE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Kindergarten
In Language Arts, kindergarten students continued to analyze the characters in their
stories. They read and retold the stories with expression based each character's
feelings. Students watched for changes in the character's feelings from the beginning to
the end of the book. They looked at the illustrations and thought about what the
characters might be thinking or feeling throughout the story. Q and U got married!
Students participated in the wedding. They dressed up in fancy clothes, carried flowers
down the aisle, and promised to always make words together like "quick", "queen", and
"quilt"! A celebration followed with dancing (brain breaks), treats (snack), and spelling! In
Math, students examined both 2D and 3D shapes. They identified the faces of the
shapes using geoblocks. Students also built and copied 3D shape structures. They
went on a 3D shape hunt in the classroom and played "fill the hexagons" with trapezoids,
rhombi and triangles.
First Grade
During Reading Workshop, students explored a variety of genres using fiction texts, nonfiction texts, articles, and even poems to learn more about a topic. Each classroom had
text set bins full of resources on topics such as weather, transportation, penguins, sports,
ocean life, cats, bats, and dinosaurs. Students met in small groups to practice skills such
as finding the “big idea” of a book and author’s purpose. They learned how to determine

2
June 25, 2015
what was important information and what were smaller details as they read.. They
learned that they can figure out trickier words by using the context of the sentence, using
the picture, and using text features such as the glossary. In Math, students learned
different ways to count numbers. They started with counting past 100 and then explored
skip counting by 2s. They continued this counting pattern with 5s and 10s. This helped
them with their next math skill…tens and ones. Students explored using base ten blocks
to make and count 2-digit numbers. They worked on putting numbers in order from least
to greatest and from greatest to least. They also learned how to compare numbers to see
which number is bigger. They learned how to use the symbols for greater than, less than,
and equal to as they compared two numbers. In Science, students finished a unit on
Organisms.
They observed both fresh water and forest habitats and learned how
pollution can affect them both. Students loved being scientists and learning how to use
observational skills to deepen their understanding of the natural world around them! In
Social Studies, students began working on Map Skills. They learned the difference
between a map and a globe. They learned about cardinal directions, and practiced
reciting their home address. Students learned about the different kinds of landforms that
are often represented on maps and map keys. They learned about our nation’s symbols.
They learned about the Statue of Liberty, the bald eagle, and the American Flag.
Second Grade
In Reading, students continued to make inferences and identify the main idea. They also
worked with homophones, antonyms, and synonyms. In addition, students had lots of fun
learning all about figurative language. Students read informational books and located
evidence in the text to support their learning. In Math, students experimented with
probability, found the perimeter of polygons, and constructed arrays and worked with
grids. In Writing, students wrote many forms of poetry and worked on a Native American
Unit. Students learned about the life cycle of caterpillars and the metaphoric process,
including a ceremony where the students waved goodbye to their butterfly friends as they
flew away to their new home in the beautiful courtyard! Second grade writers published
their poetry books!
Third Grade
What a thrill it was working on the Embryology unit! The eggs arrived and students kept
them warm and turned them daily. Moreover, they had an opportunity to handle the eggs
and some students were able to see the chicks move inside the eggs! As the chicks
hatched, students learned about their “egg tooth” and other aspects of hatching. In
Reader’s Workshop, students learned about crowning achievements and life lessons as
themes. In Writer’s Workshop, students continued to edit and draft their fairy tale
adaptations. In math, students were introduced to the concept of decimals. They
examined line plots and learned how to read, interpret data, and create line plots using
measures of temperature. In Science, students were excited to work on the Solar System
unit with a scavenger hunt.
Fourth Grade
Most fourth grade students worked on an informational reading and writing project for
language arts. They thought about how nonfiction text is organized into chapters and
ideas, different strategies for note taking, sorting information into categories, making
decisions about what books to read, and growing ideas about their topic. In Science,
students built their regulation vehicle and tested different questions. They recorded
School Reports
3
June 25, 2015
observations about movement, changes in weights, and problems they encountered.
Additionally, students learned how different forces affect the vehicles that they built with
K’Nex pieces. They initially learned that an increase in a pulling force should increase the
speed of the vehicle, when all other factors are kept constant. Fourth graders began
working with Mr. O’Neill to create an interesting technology addition to their science
research projects. Students created movie trailers to entice readers to read their
research papers. Mr. O'Neil came and gave the training to all the classes in iMovie
basics, and uploading images in Google drive.
Fifth Grade
Students participated in the annual Indian Lane Spelling Bee. Colonial Day research
was a recent focus with presentations on colonial trades, visits from special guests, and a
trip to historic Philadelphia. Students saw many historical sights and had a wonderful
colonial meal at The City Tavern. Fifth grade students visited Springton Lake Middle
School. They had a tour of the building. They saw some performances from special areas
groups. Indian Lane’s fifth grade recognition ceremony was held and students received
certificates of completion for their elementary school studies. Presentations were made
by Mr. Wigo and Ms. Seeley and the Student Council officers each had a part in the
ceremony. Students, staff, and special guests bid farewell to Mr. Woods, who will retire at
the end of 2014-2015 school year.
Art
First grade added clothing detail to their ripped paper portraits and assembled their
portraits to show growth and learned about seascapes. Second graders sketched their
homes for a community project. They formed and glazed clay houses in the likeness of
their own homes to highlight their study of communities. Next, they explored the butterfly
for its symmetrical design. Third graders reviewed Vincent Van Gogh. They sketched
outside to celebrate the Impressionists. Fourth graders completed their cake renderings
in tribute to Wayne Thiebaud. They also painted outside in the manner of Georgia
O’Keeffe. Fifth graders formed images in honor of the Willow Pattern Story and completed
a unit on colonial art.
Physical Education
Students worked on field day events in anticipation of the BIG EVENT! Despite the rain,
field day was a huge success. Events consisted of tug-a-war, an inflatable obstacle
course, water balloons and a water slide… just to name a few. The day ended with a
wonderfully choreographed dance by staff members and fifth grade students.
Music
First grade students continued to work on steady beat, pitch matching and rhythmic
dictation as well as composing with quarter notes, half notes and quarter rests. They
learned about and listened to Sergei Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf.” Second graders
finished the instrumental family unit with the woodwind and percussion families and also
sang and performed a (challenging) dance to a pentatonic song. They performed an
authentic dance from 19th century America - the Virginia Reel. Third and fourth grade
students completed their recorder performances to finish up Recorder Karate belt testing.
Fifth graders worked on chord building with chimes and square dancing.

All our classes participated in Poetry Café and did an amazing job. The Scholastic Buy
One Get One Free Book Fair was a HUGE success. It was a great opportunity to stock
up for summer reading. There was a “Book Swap” sponsored by our wonderful PTG.
During the Book Swap, students were able to take one book for every one they donated.
MEDIA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Kindergarten Community Members!
Kindergarten has been very busy studying Communities and recently created our own
“Media Community” out of covered boxes. The unit of study culminated with a walking
tour of “Everybody’s Hometown”. We had an educational visit to the Fire Station, MediaUpper Providence Library, and a fun stop at O’Malley’s Ice Cream. We were able to walk
right by some of the actual businesses/buildings that we designed and created in the
classroom!
First Grade Scientists!
This month first grade students have been learning about animal classifications. Students
have researched birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals. As a culminating
activity, students visited the Philadelphia Zoo where they were able to put their knowledge
to work by observing and interacting with live animals.
Second Grade Anthropologists!
During the month of May, the MES Second Graders participated in the second round of
MAPs. They also participated in the third DIBELS assessments. As a school-wide
reward, the classes got together to play kickball. It was an event enjoyed by all! Of
course, we can’t forget about participating in the Fox 29 Spring Fling! The Second
Graders showed their MES pride and were ready, respectful, and responsible during the
visit and filming. They had the opportunity to mix it up and sit with different people at
lunch for Mix-It Up Day. It was a fun way to be able to get to know a new friend or two!
The Second Graders visited Tyler Arboretum to learn about the Lenape tribe as part of
their Native American unit of study. They were impressed by the information they
received about a tribe that inhabited their “own backyard”! They also travelled to
Penncrest to see a wonderful performance of Law and Order Nursery Rhyme Unit!
Finally, the month of May ended with Field Day! It was a beautiful day enjoyed by all!
Third Grade Activists!
Students in Media Elementary School’s third grade finished their reading and writing unit
on biographies and literary essays. The culmination of the unit was a Living History
museum. Students, parents, and community members enjoyed walking through the halls
and learning about noteworthy people such as Rosalind Franklin, Jesse Owens, Juliette
Lowe, Theodore Roosevelt, and many more.
In their final reading unit of the year, students are reading books with a lens in search for
social issues that their characters may be facing. The students have learned about
themselves, their characters, what social issues are, and how they can help bring about
change in the world. The students will create action plans which they can choose to

community and world.
Fourth Grade Scientists!
Fourth graders are learning about ecosystems in science and how habitats work together.
Students created eco-columns, which consist of a terrarium and an aquarium. After they
build the terrarium and aquarium and add living creatures, they observe and record the
symbiotic relationship of pill bugs, crickets, elodea, duckweed, fish and snails. Student
also completed lab notes, scientific drawings and observe life cycles in action over
several weeks.
Fifth Grade Achievers!
Fifth grade students were recognized for their accomplishments at the annual MES Grade
Five Recognition Ceremony. We thank the Media Theater for hosting this wonderful
event. The fifth grade is preparing for our annual trip to Washington D.C. We have
studied American history this year, and we will be visiting the Jefferson, MLK, and Lincoln
Memorials as well as the WWII and Washington Monuments in the morning and the
Smithsonian Museums in the afternoon.
Artists!
A beautiful mosaic of hands on a vine weaves around the State Street doors of Media
Elementary and was unveiled after a recognition ceremony for the fifth grade class of
2015. Students in fifth grade worked with professional mosaic artist and parent, Claire
Brill, to create this legacy project. Students used tracings of their hands and stained
glass as part of a collaborative mural for the State Street entrance of the school.
Media Elementary students spent their final weeks of class time reviewing art terms and
completing projects. Each student brought home a complete portfolio of two-dimensional
art projects, created during the course of the year, as well as themed booklets,
sketchbooks, or folders in which students reflected on their learning.
Library News
As the summer months approach, attention has turned toward summer reading. Miss
Brittany, children’s librarian from the Media-Upper Providence Library, has been visiting
with our Kindergarten, first and second grade students to introduce the summer reading
challenge entitled, “Every Hero Has a Story.” Kickoff is with an appearance by Batman!
Students in grade three recently visited the Franklin Institute. In preparation for that visit,
students have been reading, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, by Brian Selznick during
library time and learning about automatons. The automaton that inspired Selnick’s story
is displayed at the Franklin Institute. Students in grades 4 and 5 have been focusing on
summer reading as well, watching book trailers and listening to book talks by Mrs.
Matusow.
Music
Our fifth grade composers have written, edited, published and performed short songs for
either their band/string instrument or their classroom recorders. The compositions
synthesize musical knowledge gained throughout their elementary careers and provide a
strong foundation as they head to middle school.

ROSE TREE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Kindergarten
Kindergarten has been busy preparing for our end of year festivities! The wonderful
parent volunteers have planned a luau party for the children so as to celebrate their
accomplishments. The children are also practicing some Reader's Theater productions,
which they'll present to the parents before the party. It was a busy, exciting year and
we're all sad to see it ending!
First Grade
The end of the year was an exciting time for first grade. The students went on two field
trips. One was to the Delaware Museum of Natural History, and the other was to the
Elmwood Park Zoo. Each trip coordinated with two science units, namely, Animal
Classification and Organisms. The students also enjoyed finishing up the year with the
Balancing and Weighing science unit. They discovered that weight, and the way it is
distributed, affects balance. They constructed their own mobiles that balanced! Our
readers, writers, mathematicians, and scientists are looking forward to second grade.
Second Grade
Second graders at Rose Tree embarked on an Opinion Writing unit this month. Using our
new Units of Study, mini lessons and mentor text, students learned that their words can
truly make a difference and that we can persuade the reader to think like we think, and be
convinced by our words. Students learned the process of opinion writing, gathered ideas
in their writer's notebook and applied techniques and strategies to their writing pieces. A
student checklist guided their progress toward the goals of strong structure, development
and language conventions. Students spent time deciding how to deliver their opinion to
the targeted audience and enjoyed knowing that their voice counts.

Third Grade
The third graders of Rose Tree Elementary finished the school year with a flurry of
activity! The students ventured to the Franklin Institute for a field trip which reinforced the
many concepts learned through our science lessons this year. The children completed
their biography research projects and shared what they learned through speeches
delivered to their classmates. They read a variety of "fractured" fairy tales, making
comparisons between these creative versions and the original stories. The students then
had the opportunity to write their own versions of classic folk tales and fairy tales. They
were proud of the imagination they demonstrated as authors! The students enjoyed a visit
from local veterans and Honor Guard members who shared a history of the American flag
and demonstrated a flag folding ceremony, including the meaning behind each fold of the
flag. The students showed great respect for the flag, as well as our visitors. The third
grade students are off and on their way to the fourth grade! Submitted by Beth Hartert
Fourth Grade
Fourth graders at Rose Tree celebrated the beauty of the United States with their annual
State Fair. Each student chose a state to research. As part of the project, students had
to create a map of their state, write a speech, re-create the state flag, and design a hat
representative of their state. Many students also created a Google slide presentation
about their state. Each class presented their projects to their homeroom. Students were
then able to visit other classrooms to view the work of other students and ask questions
about each state. Submitted by Sara McKelvey
Fifth Grade
The fifth grade classes at Rose Tree Elementary are all Google Drive classes, thanks to
Mr. Evan O’Neill. Our most recent Google Drive project correlated our studies in reading,
researching, writing, and science. The students chose zoo animals to study and research.
Student choices ranged from the Bali mynah bird to the hippopotamus. Students found
information related to scientific name, anatomy and appearance, habitat and range,
adaptations, behavior, and survival status. Students created slide shows on Google Drive
with all the information gathered. Pictures and videos were embedded in the shows and
each student presented their project to the class. As a culminating activity, the fifth grade
visited the Philadelphia Zoo. Students toured the zoo and found the animal that each
researched. The students also participated in a zoo workshop entitled, Animal
Adaptations. Zookeepers presented activities and material that enhanced the leaning for
our fifth graders. Submitted by Holly Clark
Art
Students at Rose Tree Elementary presented an art exhibition featuring artworks
reflecting the Aladdin theme. First grade artists exhibited colorful elephants while second
grade artists exhibited cityscapes in the style of the city in which Aladdin lived. Third
grade artists displayed cartooning works created in the style of the Walt Disney studios,
while fourth grade artists exhibited "flying carpets" created from linen-blend cloth and
fabric crayons. Fifth grade students exhibited lamps in various media which captured the
magic of the genie lamp in the play, Aladdin. Family and friends of the student artists
attended the performance of the play and enjoyed viewing the artworks before and after
the show. Submitted by Dr. Meg Barney

Music
First and second graders discovered Camille Saint-Saen’s “Carnival of the Animals.” The
students identified the history behind the piece, and created a visual listening map
matching the animal with each of the 14 different movements. It corresponded well with
their trip to the zoo. Third graders completed all of the instrument families, woodwind,
brass, strings, and percussion. The students created their own instruments using one
piece from each family. They presented them to the class. Fifth graders completed a
successful spring concert and are prepping for the musical performance. They also
completed a unit using the iPad app Garageband. This furthered their learning on rock
and roll music and allowed them to create a composition using digital instruments. They
are all essentially “one-man” bands. At the end of the unit each student was given time to
explain their composition and present to a rubric. Students were able to export their song
and have it to share with family and friends in their google drive. The chorus theater club
had two successful performances of Aladdin. Submitted by Dave Sikorski
Physical Education
During the month of June, all grades participated in a variety of activities that included
skills learned this year, that promote cooperation, teamwork, and respect. Submitted by

SPRINGTON LAKE MIDDLE SCHOOL
Art
The art exhibit was a joyous affair with a large attendance of people enjoying the artwork
and the music of Mrs. Lyons' orchestra students.
Ms. Sycz’ eighth grade students are drawing an illuminated manuscript which includes an
inspiring quote. The medieval illuminated manuscripts viewed previously in class have
provided students with ideas for their own work. Seventh grade students have been
glazing their large clay animal sculptures. Grade six students have finished glazing their
clay sculptures. Students have begun an abstract drawing which explores the elements of
line and color.
Mrs. Going’s eighth grades completed their three dimensional sculptures producing
figures, Winnie the Pooh to Dumbo. All understanding how to proportion their subject
based on, using the head of the figure to count throughout the rest of the body. The other
half of the eighth grades complete their original Illuminated Manuscript assignments by
adding color with water soluble colored pencils, traditional watercolors, sharpie fine line
colored markers and gold and silver paint pens to represent the real gold which was
painted into the actual manuscripts during the Medieval period in history! Seventh grades

have completed their travel advertisements by producing proper block letters, taking
those block letters and crating three dimensional letters using Linear 1 Point Perspective
and finally adding in drawings to promote the location they have chosen. Color is added
using colored pencils and blending 2 or more colors using proper blending technique
which students learned at the beginning of the unit. Sixth grades have now completed
their first ceramics unit at Springton Lake. Classes learned to sculpt their hands and then
were asked, “What would you put in the palm of your hand?" They sculpted that item to
add to their clay hand. Rolling slabs, scoring clay, use of slip and proper and safe
handling of pottery needles and fettling knives have been added to their current
knowledge and skills. Glazing information and techniques completed the unit.
Mrs. Prior’s sixth graders are putting their color mixing skills to the test as they paint their
still life drawings of fruits and vegetables. They are also exploring how to create value and
form through blending while they paint. They have created space by overlapping and
creating foreground, middle ground, and background. Seventh grade students are
improving their drawing skills and exploring negative and positive space while creating
their thematic drawings. Complementary or contrasting colors added in marker make their
drawings pop! Eighth graders are working hard to finish their clay figures. The challenge
of using clay to create a proportional figure has stretched the skills of the students. A
variety of figures are emerging such as princesses, cartoon characters, sports figures,
wizards, celebrities, mascots, and everyday people. Little did Michelangelo know that he
would be influencing students at Springton Lake Middle School!
Core Extension
Guidance
Sixth grade students participated in a guidance lesson to help review the student skills
they learned throughout the year. They made posters listing the strategies that helped
them to be successful in sixth grade. The posters will be displayed in September as a
reminder of what they need to do in seventh grade. Since time management is a crucial
student and life skill, students also completed a weekly time sheet to assist them with
organization and planning.
Seventh graders learned the benefits of meditation and mindfulness recently in a
guidance lesson presented by Ms. Howe. The students were introduced to mindfulness
with a one minute listening activity. Student had to sit still and listen to the sounds of the
room for one minute. Many found this relaxing. Students learned that incorporating
mindfulness into their life enables them to make better decisions, improve their grades,
focus more and become kinder.
All fifth grade students spent the morning at Springton Lake as part of the middle school
transition program. SLMS Student Council members gave fifth grade students a tour,
facilitated small group activities and ended the morning with lunch in the cafeteria.
A small group of fifth grade students visited Springton Lake to help with the transition to
middle school. Mrs. Gilroy and Mrs. Hemenway organized the morning which included
small group activities, a tour and lunch. Seventh grade student council members
facilitated the morning activities.

Language Arts
In eighth grade Language Arts classes, students read The Pearl, a novella by John
Steinbeck. This study began with an exploration into folktales, mythology, and types of
heroes. Students looked at a wide variety of heroes and created their own myth or folktale
based on the genre study. As students read The Pearl, they used close reading
techniques to apply their genre knowledge. As the culmination of the unit, students
discussed issues of race, class, and privilege, and made connections between these
themes and their own lives in their writing. Finally, students have been provided the
opportunity to reflect on their years here at Springton Lake and their hopes and dreams
for Penncrest through creating multi-genre writing projects.
The seventh grade Language Arts students completed a culminating creative writing
piece. They used their creativity to write narratives using all elements of a plot diagram,
including characters, setting, a major conflict, suspense, and a turning point. Students
used figurative language, showed character growth, and all stories had a strong message
or theme. They also grounded dialogue by including action, thoughts and feelings to give
the readers a clear picture of the scene. The students enjoyed sharing their final products
with their peers and teachers!
In sixth grade language arts, students wrapped up their historical fiction book clubs with
projects analyzing the story elements of the books they read, as well as the time periods
and social issues explored in the books. In addition, students created their own
personalized summer reading lists, by researching new releases and speaking to
classmates and friends. Lastly, students created summer writing lists for themselves, as
well. These lists included items such as “Write a week’s worth of diary entries from my
dog’s point of view” and “Write a letter to J.K. Rowling explaining why she should write
another book in the Harry Potter series.” Teachers are hoping these personalized lists
give the students inspiration to continue their reading and writing over the summer.
Library
With summer vacation just around the corner, the library is turning up the heat on its
efforts to promote summer reading. A display of summer reading options informs students
about the required titles, as well as highlighting an array of suggested reads in multiple
genres. The summer reading information can be found on the library’s website as well.
The Spring Book Fair was well-received and very successful. Students visited the fair with
language arts classes and were happy to get a head start on shopping for summer reads.
As usual, parent volunteers were a tremendous help in collecting money and
straightening after classes. The fair was also open two evenings before spring concerts
for added convenience to families wishing to “shop.” A big “Thank You” to Jabberwocky
Books for providing the fair and well wishes, as the company is closing up shop and
moving on after many years. The librarian met with representatives from the Middletown
Free Library to discuss ways that we might partner to promote reading and information
literacy. The Free Library is sponsoring a number of fantastic programs this summer that
target the middle school age group, and we also discussed the possibility of acquiring
public library cards for students who would like to have them. Students are encouraged to
visit their local public library this summer to check out the wonderful books and programs
that are available. Students and parents can check out www.delcolibraries.org for more
information on public library offerings.

Science
In sixth grade science, students studied endangered animals. Students chose an
endangered animal to research. While researching, students were looking for reasons
their animal was endangered and were trying to find out if there were conservation efforts
to help their animal. Students presented their findings to the class.
The seventh grade science classes culminate their investigation of forces and energy
outside the class with Physics Day at Hershey Park. The students collect data such as
time, acceleration, and gravity changes experienced while riding amusement park
attractions. The year closes by studying gravitational forces here on Earth and throughout
the universe.
In eighth grade science, we utilized a serious online game entitled Web AdventuresMedMyst: Disease Defenders. Developed by Rice University's Center for Technology
and Teaching in Learning, students could choose to train with an epidemiologist,
microbiologist, or veterinarian to learn how these experts work as a team to solve
infectious disease outbreaks while using the scientific method. Each expert path has its
own learning objectives and stresses different parts of the scientific method. Students
also worked in teams to develop and answer questions based on actual data from rabies
outbreaks, to interpret line graphs and pictographs in a meaningful way. Finally, students
were able to tackle the follow-up program to this, entitled MedMyst: Animal Alert!, where
students learned about a mysterious disease that affected people in a distant tropical
region and worked to determine what specifically was making people sick.
Social Studies
Sixth grade students have studied the colonization of Africa by the European powers.
Students have compared the current map of Africa created by the Europeans to the tribal
map of Africa. Countries such as Nigeria and Rwanda are used as examples of the
modern consequences resulting from the mistreatment of the African people during the
colonial period. In addition, some students have studied and created graphs for the
Human Development Index to compare the well-being of people in African countries to
those in the U.S. The students ended the year with the study of the apartheid government
in South Africa and Mandela’s leadership in the struggle against racist policies.
In seventh grade social studies classes, students were exploring and researching various
aspects of the American Civil War. Some of the topics that interested the students
include: Civil War rations, medicine, battle strategies and the role of women during the
conflict. Students have made presentations using a variety of methods such as IMovie,
Prezi, and role-play. Students used higher-order thinking when creating their finished
product. Several students chose to compare battle techniques and military issued
supplies from the 1860s to supplies and techniques in America today. In addition,
students were required to make connections to Soldier's Heart, the novel they are reading
in language arts class. As a culminating activity, students explored the multitude of
immigrants that came to America in the late 19th century.
Eighth Grade students have written research papers defending a thesis statement
concerning Ancient Rome. Proper MLA format and in-text citations were required. The
value of primary sources was emphasized as well. Some students engaged in a Socratic

Seminar with Roman Expansion as the topic while others debated the whether or not
Roman Expansion was ultimately a wise choice for that civilization. Tom Snyder’s
Decisions, Decisions: Ancient Empires program provided stimulating lessons. Students
were given various challenges faced by the people that lived in the ancient world. They
made decisions after viewing historical readings. Their civilization thrived or struggled
depending on their decisions. In addition, some classes have been reading plays about
Julius Caesar and the Fall of Rome. The students have explored Roman mythology,
engineering and architecture using Greco-Roman artifacts and replicas from the
University of Pennsylvania’s Museum of Anthropology and Archeology.
Special Education
Sixth grade learning support math has been reviewing fraction operations including
adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. We have also reinforced and practiced
simplifying fractions, changing improper fractions to mixed numbers and changing mixed
numbers to improper fractions. Students worked on a unit focused on calculating surface
area of rectangular prisms. Prerequisite skills were reviewed including calculating the
area of a square and a rectangle. We also discussed the importance of labeling your
answer with square units when calculating surface area. The concept was more
meaningful to students when they measured real world rectangular prisms including a
tissue box, a cardboard box, and a white board eraser. We measured these items in
square centimeters.
A number of recent activities have aided in both fifth to six and eighth to ninth grade
transitions. All incoming sixth graders have visited Springton Lake and small group tours
for incoming sixth graders have also occurred. Mrs. Hemenway has also visited all of the
elementary school buildings and attended IEP meetings for incoming sixth graders. The
entire eighth grade has visited Penncrest for an orientation and Mrs. Hemenway has
taken her students to Penncrest for small-group tours and orientations.
Dr. LaCoste and Mrs. Keiles have worked tirelessly to prepare the Extended School Year
program (ESY) for students, teachers, and instructional assistants. Parents, students, and
staff will receive detailed information about the ESY program before the end of the school
year. Enjoy your summer break!
