Bearbeitungszeit: 60 Minuten Hilfsmittel: Rechtschreib-Wörterbuch I. LESEVERSTEHEN African hip hop Angelique Nzabanita was born in Rwanda – a poor African nation with a long history of war and violence between its two ethnic groups, the Hutu and the Tutsi. After her parents died, Angelique spent 14 years homeless on the streets of Kigali, Rwanda’s capital city. She became a drug addict. Then football gave Angelique the chance to change her life. At the age of 18, she became a member of Rwanda’s team for the 2008 Homeless World Cup in Melbourne, Australia. For her and her team mates, the Homeless World Cup gave them something to be proud of. “I am famous back home and many people recognize me,” she says. Angelique was able to stay in Australia as a refugee, and now she is one of a small but growing group of African-Australians. While she was homeless in Rwanda, Angelique listened to African-American hip hop. “When I was little, I was inspired by American hip hop. I love hip hop – it’s in me,” she says. She now calls herself Macc-Too and has a new career – as Melbourne’s first female RwandanAustralian hip hop artist. “Most African-Australians rap about life and they want to inspire or to challenge people. So do I,” she explains. Her song ‘Like a hero’ tells us not to judge others by their appearance, because appearance doesn’t tell the whole story. Her fellow rapper, Mxc Wol, left his home country, Sudan, as a child refugee and also came to live in Melbourne. He thinks that American hip hop has changed: “When hip hop started in America, it was more about story telling... now they just talk about drugs and girls.” Along with Emanuel Jal, who was a child soldier in Sudan but is now a successful musician, Macc-Too and Mxc Wol are part of a new generation of African-Australian hip hop artists who have a positive message for their fans. They have experienced more violence in their lives than Technische Oberschule Stuttgart Seite 2 von 6 any American gangsta rapper, but their message is about peace and respect. They are a wonderful example of how refugees can give something back to the country which gave them a home, and make a new identity which is both African and Australian.
