NANNY MCPHEE EINE ZAUBERHAFTE NANNY
UK/USA/France 2005, 97 minutes,
Director: Kirk Jones
Cast: Emma Thompson, Colin Firth, Kelly McDonald, Angela
Lansbury
fsk: o.A., recommended age: 6 +
The seven children of Mr. Brown are
a raucous lot. Since their beloved
mother died, they play at night
and sleep during the day and do
whatever they like. No less than
17 nannies tried and failed to discipline the Brown children. At his
wits’ end Mr Brown employs ugly
and scary Nanny McPhee. When
the children try to play their tricks
on her they discover, to their dismay,
that she can do magic. But even worse is
to come: Mr Brown wants to marry the vicious Mrs. Quikkly and dreadful Aunt Adelaide is coming for a visit … The
famous British actress and writer Emma Thompson wrote
the script and plays the nanny in this brightly coloured
comedy set in a fairytale England.
BILLY ELLIOT
UK/France 2000, 112 minutes
Director: Stephen Daldry
Cast: Jamie Bell, Jean Heywood, Gary Lewis, Jamie Draven
fsk: 6, recommended age: 10 +
It is by accident that 11-year old Billy
discovers what he really wants to
do: when he watches the girls’
ballet lesson he falls in love with
dancing. Billy starts to train but
keeps this a secret knowing
full well that his father would
strongly disapprove. But when
his teacher proposes an audition at the Royal School of Ballet
he has to go public. As the 1984
miners’ strike hits the town and his
family, Billy Elliot fights for the right to
fulfil his dreams – and for the chance of a better life. Anyone
who has ever had a secret dream will be able to connect
with this well told film starring a terrific Jamie Bell as Billy
Elliot. Watch out for the amazing dance scenes that make
you want to dance, too!
A HARD DAY´S NIGHT
UK 1964, 87 minutes
Director: Richard Lester
Cast: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo
Starr, Wilfrid Brambell
fsk: 6, recommended age: 12 +
The first full length Beatles musical is still as surprising and
hilarious as when it first came
out in the mid-sixties. The
film loosely follows the Fab
Four in their ordinary routine:
screaming girls, rehearsals
and endless hours spent on
the train. At the height of their
career, but still in their early twen-
ties, the Beatles are a very happy andextremely silly lot.
They poke fun at their managers, skive rehearsals and
babysit Paul’s grandfather “the old mixer” who for some
unexplained reason has come along. Prefiguring Monty
Python´s humour A HARD DAY’S NIGHT offers a quirky
and funny insight into one of Britain’s biggest legends.
OLIVER TWIST
UK/Czech Republic/France/Italy 2005, 128 minutes
Director: Roman Polanski
Cast : Barney Clark, Jeremy Swift, Harry Eden, Ben Kingsley,
leanne Rowe
fsk: 12, recommended age: 12 +
Charles Dickens' classic story of a
young orphan boy who gets involved with a gang of pickpockets
in nineteen century London
has been re-imagined by the
Oscar™-winning director Roman
Polanski. Orphaned at an early
age, Oliver Twist is forced to live
in a workhouse lorded over by the
horrible Mr Bumble and its board of
hypocritical 'fat gentlemen'. Desperate
yet determined, Oliver makes his escape to
the streets of London. Penniless and alone, he is lured into
a world of crime by the sinister Fagin – the mastermind of a
gang of pint-sized pickpockets. Oliver's rescue by the kindly
Mr Brownlow is only the beginning of a series of adventures
that lead him to the promise of a better life.
YASMIN
UK/Germany 2003, 83 minutes
Director: Kenneth Glenaan
Cast: Archie Panjabi, Renu Setna, Steve Jackson, Syed Ahmed
fsk: 12, recommended age: 14 +
During the day Yasmin is a highly respected colleague at
social services in her Scottish hometown. At night she
returns to her family who negotiates life between Pakistani
traditions and British routines. The
balancing act works out fine for
Yasmin – until the events of
the 11th of September 2001
start to shift everyone’s
perceptions. Tactless jokes
make the rounds at work
while at home the focus on
tradition and religion becomes stronger. Small differences
all of a sudden become massive dividing lines between cultures.
In the tradition of British social realism YASMIN takes
a perceptive and subtly humorous look at the vicious
circle of mistrust.
THIS IS ENGLAND
UK 2006, 90 minutes
Director: Shane Meadows
Cast: Thomas Turgoose, Stephen Graham, Jo Hartley, Andrew Shim
fsk: 12, recommended age: 15 +
12-year old Shaun, whose father was
killed in the Falkland war, is a bit of
a loner despite his cheeky tongue.
One day on the way back from a
trying day at school he meets
Woody and his friends, apolitical early day skins who are
into booze, clothes and music.
Shaun becomes the smallest
member of the gang and has lots
of destructive fun until ex-member
Combo returns from prison and starts
introducing fascist ideas into the gang …
Shane Meadows vibrant and engaging coming-of-age story
and its teenage star Thomas Turgoose have snatched up all
the major British Film awards. In Germany the film can be
seen exclusively as part of BRITFILMS Festival.
