The Specialty was dedicated to the memory of Barbara Innes, who passed away in June. The Oxford County Club graciously printed our dedication (reproduced on page 4 of this newsletter) in the show catalogue without charge. The entry of Norwegian Elkhounds was relatively small (2-40-0) no doubt partly because of soaring gas prices. All show entries were down this year. To Nadine & the NECC: I finally put away all the wonderful prizes that Kodiak won last week and I must say an official "thank you" to NECC and you personally for making the event so enjoyable and for the very generous and fun prizes. I love the "tea cup" and the leaf plates, and Kodiak of course loves the toys and treats. And now we have an official dog show cooler! Thanks to all who contributed to the prizes. Mary Jo Winners Dog, Kamgaard Kodiak Snowbear, went on to win Best of Breed and represented the breed in the Group ring. Although the group of Elkhounders was small in number, they enthusiastically supported Mary Jo and Kodiak and were very proud of their 3rd place in the Hound Group. Later that evening, the group of Elkhounders met at Montana’s for remembrance of Barb and a celebration of Kodiak’s group placement. Present for dinner were Nadine Shpikula, Charles MacInnes, Mary Jo Cieply, Ray and Lois Mills, Doris and Joanna Ingles and Kimberlee Kaus-Wirth. Mott Owner: Mary Jo Cieply Hound Group 3rd Kamgaard Kodiak Snowbear The Norwegian Elkhound Club of Canada dedicates the NECC Booster, Saturday, July 12, 2008, to the memory of NECC President Barbara Augusta Innes June 6, 1933 – June 5, 2008 With a love of dogs since childhood, Barbara and her late husband, Karl, established Karin Kennels in 1955. Very active in Weimaraners in the ‘50s, they moved on to Elkhounds in 1960. A small hobby kennel dedicated to the betterment of purebred dogs, her kennel holds a permanent registration with the Canadian Kennel Club. Barb owned and bred numerous American and Canadian champions and Top 10 Elkhounds in both Canada and the US, and has the honour of being the only Canadian to date to have won the Norwegian Elkhound Association of America National Specialty. She also owned and showed Skye Terriers and Australian Cattle Dogs. A life member of the Canadian Kennel Club, President of the Norwegian Elkhound Club of Canada, and board member of her home club, the Temiskaming Kennel Club, she held numerous positions in other clubs and was a member of the Norwegian Elkhound Association of America and the British Norwegian Elkhound Club. She received CKC approval to judge in 1990 and was licensed to judge all breeds, groups and best in show; she also judged rare breed shows. Assignments took her to all parts of Canada, Great Britain, Columbia, Venezuela and the U.S.A. Barb’s dedication to Elkhounds, epitomized by her years as a successful breeder, exhibitor, judge and mentor, and her huge contribution to two national clubs – the Norwegian Elkhound Club of Canada and the Norwegian Elkhound Association of America – illustrate her deep commitment to our beloved breed. She was the 2008 co-recipient of the NEAA Ed Schlesinger Outstanding Service Award, in recognition of work and efforts of outstanding quality and benefit to the NEAA and the Norwegian Elkhound. Without her enthusiasm and energy, the Norwegian Elkhound Club of Canada, and its Specialties held every two years, would not exist. But all of us who have known her over the years will miss her most as a true friend. The Trillium Dog Fanciers’ annual show cluster took place on October 31, and November 1-2, 2008. The All Hound Club of Ontario held their annual Hound Specialty show on Sunday, November 2, 2008 in memory of Barbara Innes. Below is the dedication, reprinted from the Trillium Dog Fanciers catalogue. The Norwegian Elkhound world has lost some wonderful people this year … people who made a huge commitment to the preservation of our breed through their contributions as breeders and judges. They will be missed. 6 June 2, 2008 Margaret Harper Ravenstone Elkhounds Margaret and Ted ran the oldest active Norwegian Elkhound Kennel in the UK for over 50 years. On her website she wrote: "From when I first met Elkhounds I sensed that they were very special and there was never any doubt in my mind that my life was going to be intertwined with them, come what may. I can hear my father now saying “if you must have a dog of your own for goodness sake get a good one, it won’t cost any more to keep than a bad one! So of course with the enthusiasm of youth I went to the top kennel" At that she succeeded. Ravenstone dogs have gone on to win 37 or more championships in the UK and the world is filled with lovely dogs from her efforts. Margaret was also active in mentoring younger breeders and will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved her. The website at http://ravenstone.awardspace.com/ is being maintained as a tribute to Margaret. June 5, 2008 Barbara Innes Karin Reg’d (perm) Please see page 4. October 28, 2008 Russ & Karen Weir Ruskar Elkhounds Russ and Karen were killed in a single vehicle traffic accident in Nebraska on their return from California where they had competed in the Sacramento-Sierra Norwegian Elkhound Club specialty. Their ‘big dog’, BIS BISS Ch. Ruskar CK’s Hy and Mighty (’Mo’) survived. The Weirs had bred Elkhounds for over 30 years, and ’Mo’ holds the breed record for Specialty Best in Show wins. They were active in Junior Handling and 4-H; anyone who attended the 2008 NEAA Specialty will recall the little girl with the big dog, their granddaughter showing an Elkhound bigger than she was, and doing a better job than most of the adults in the ring. They are survived by their five children and nine grandchildren. Well-know for their love of family, commitment to the Elkhound breed and encouragement to their fellow exhibitors, they are greatly missed in our Elkhound community. Best of Breed CH. Valord’s Diamond in Disguise Breeder/owner: Connie Vaillancourt Viking ship bow ring entrance (made by Karen Nichols of NEAM) 7 AGILITY The Norwegian Elkhound Association of America Specialty was held in Rochester MN in May, with an entry of over 250 Elkhounds. The week kicked off with Obedience and Rally Obedience on Monday, followed by Futurity and Maturity. Tuesday was Agility Day — tho’ the handlers felt the 43◦ weather was a bit brisk, the Elkhounds loved it. Puppy Sweeps followed, ably judged by Canadian breeder Lynda Tarnowski. The evening events started with a very emotional Rescue Parade, slated to become a regular event at Nationals. The Veterans Sweepstakes followed (again judged by Lynda). Five of the six bitches in the oldest (11 yrs & older) class had titles on both ends … that is, conformation championships along with agility, obedience and/or rally obedience titles — great testimony to the versatility of our breed. Wednesday started off with the chilly One-Miler. Next were seminars, including an excellent one on vaccinations and obedience & tracking workshops. In Conformation judging Thursday morning — Nadine Shpikula’s Kiro’s Classy Chassis, placed 2nd in her class. Best of Breed was chosen Friday afternoon and the banquet and Awards presentations were Friday night. And we’ll do it all again in 2010 in Kalamazoo MI. I mostly trained last year...we only competed in 2 trials and she earned 2/3 CDX legs (one of which was at the National Specialty which was such a THIRLL!), but this tells me one HUGE thing ... there aren't many hounds doing obedience in Canada. But who cares??! That certificate is going to look impressive in Quinn's scrapbook! Guess we better get our butts in gear and get out there this year … one more CDX leg, then on to UD and Agility with her, and Rally-O with the Mont-ster (aka Monty)!” NECC member Paula Kennedy 10 Photos: Gail Klinck #8 Obedience Hound in Canada - 2007 Alpha’s Ain’t She Something CD - ‘Quinn’ The Norwegian Elkhound Club of Canada proudly presents our 15th National Specialty WHERE: Woodstock, ON (with the Oxford County Kennel Club all-breed shows) WHEN: Saturday, July 11, 2009 OUR JUDGES Conformation - Mr. Nelson Huber, Plano TX Nelson Huber purchased his first Elkhound in 1966, which turned out to be dysplastic. He bought his second Elkhound from Jack Hack – Ch. Valdemar’s Winter Storm, which did a lot of winning. He showed dogs professionally for a number of years and has finished in excess of 75 Elkhounds over the years for himself and others. He was lucky to be able to show three Elkhounds to all-breed Best in Show wins – Ch. Valdemar’s Winter Storm, Ch. Zackary of Staranne (owned by Connie Britt) and Ch. Valdemar’s Critic’s Choice (his own breeding). Choosy held the Specialty BIS record for a number of years. Nelson currently judges the Hound group, the Working group, Best in Show and Junior Showmanship. After 42 years of owning Norwegian Elkhounds, he still thinks they are the greatest of all the breeds. Puppy & Veteran Sweepstakes – Ms. Kathy Lake, Sault Ste Marie, ON Born and raised into dogs, Kathy is a second generation dog fancier – her father, Richard Lake is a licensed judge. He had the privilege to handle some very well known Elkhounds including Am & Can Ch Houndhaven’s Nordic Raider, who was Canada’s top Elkhound for many years, and Am & Can Ch Karin’s Yogi Bear, American National Specialty winner. The Lake family showed these dogs, worked with their breeders and owners, and also trained and showed many of the offspring. Kathy is currently an all-breed professional handler who still loves the breed and showing Elkhounds for clients in Canada and the US. INFO: The Quality Hotel (Woodstock ON) will be our host hotel.
