Be your own wingman
by Gen. Frank Gorenc
U.S. Air Forces in Europe and
Air Forces Africa commander
It is truly a demanding time
to serve overseas. This command
continues to execute at a high ops
tempo with new and enduring missions in Europe and Africa, providing forward-based combat airpower in an environment tempered
by fiscal uncertainty and restricted
budgets.
While the impact of the recent
government shutdown is still fresh
in our minds, I want us all to anticipate and think about how we overcome the next challenge and still
meet our mission.
We know challenges confront us
in various shapes and sizes, but in
my view, overcoming challenges
almost always starts with personal
responsibility.
As your commander, I am
responsible for providing you the
opportunity to succeed profession-

ally. But, reaching your personal
potential and getting the mission
done despite challenges is really
up to you.
As Airmen, we have been afforded the highest quality education,
training and support programs
available. While you are seemingly
well positioned for success, it’s up
to you to take personal responsibility at home and at work.
Consequently, I am asking you
to step up to the challenges you
face.
Leadership is 24/7. When a subordinate performs below standards,
provide immediate feedback. If
you are struggling financially, get
help and adjust your living standards. As you approach personal and professional development
opportunities, take advantage of
the benefits the Air Force offers
you. If you recently returned from
a deployment, give your family the
time and attention they need.
I am also asking you to exercise
the courage to step in and prevent situations from heading in the
wrong direction.
To me, personal responsibility
means stepping up, stepping in,
taking care of yourself, and taking
charge of situations and areas that
matter most — your career, your
safety, your health, your family and
your Air Force.
I am a big believer in our Airmen
and family support programs. I
am also an avid supporter of the
wingman culture we have developed over the years. We are social
beings, and we are stronger as a
community. But, I firmly believe
you are the one person best able
to step up, step in and take charge
of everyday challenges and opportunities.
I have been in the Air Force for
more than half of its existence, and
I have seen my fair share of challenges and crises. I know change
can be difficult, and these fiscally
tight times have created a lot of
uncertainty at work and at home.
But in my experience, Airmen
always prevail, because we are
innovative, we are fighters and we
take charge when challenges arise.
Step up, step in — take personal
responsibility.
Radical leadership key to change the world

e need radical leaders. We need men
and women who are not afraid to make
changes to the way we accomplish our
mission despite the pressure to keep
doing things the same old way.
Radical leadership is a topic unsettling to
those who are comfortable in the status quo.
But for us to survive the rapid pace of change
in military operations in an era of smaller budgets, we require leadership from those who can
see the present and future, not as it is, but as
it should be. We will need them to drive the
changes to keep us relevant in an ever-changing
global environment.
Radical leadership is not a new phenomenon

the wrongs the nation committed against its own

developed daring plans to survive, and ultimately win, to secure a new nation.
And four score and seven years later, another
radical leader promoted an idea that all men
were created equal regardless of the color of
their skin. It is estimated nearly three quarters
of a million people died in a conflict to destroy
the status quo of slavery. Without radical leadership to see this nation through its worst conflict, we would not be the mighty nation we are

about war.

world. It’s our way to say thanks.”
During the ceremony, many guest speakers had the
opportunity to share a few words on how to honor
our veterans, including Col. Brooks Reese, 86th
Logistics Readiness Group commander.
“Live your life in a manner that is worthy of their
sacrifice,” Reese said. “It matters not whether you
have served one day, one year, one decade, multiple
decades or an entire career. I don’t believe we can
ever be fully worthy of the sacrifice of those buried here. Their sacrifice is simply too big, but I do
believe we can earn this.”
Reese said there are a few ways how we can earn
their sacrifice.
“Strive for perfection, and settle only for excellence. Live each day in a manner that you have no
regrets. Don’t focus on being better than anyone else,
simply strive to be a little better today than you were
yesterday and a little better tomorrow than you are
today. Take every opportunity to serve your country,
community, family and your fellow man,” he said.
For the Airmen standing in formation, making
the choice to spend their Veterans Day honoring

Drinking and driving: no second chances
by Senior Airman Whitney Stork

German law prohibits people under the age of 21
to operate a vehicle with any alcohol in their system,
and people older than 21 can’t have more than .05 percent in their system under normal circumstances and
.03 percent if involved in traffic offenses or accidents.
German and U.S. authorities report blood alcohol
tests differently. German law uses milligrams per
milliliters. U.S. law uses grams per 100 milliliters.
For example, a .5 BAT in Germany would be a 0.05
BAT in the U.S.
If a driver’s BAT is .5, the German authorities
will normally suspend a license for one month and
assess a €250 fine. However, Air Force authorities
will automatically revoke driving privileges for one
year.
If an accident occurs or there is other evidence of
functional defects in a person’s driving resembling
repeatedly swerving or crossing the center line, the
German authorities reduce the legal BAT to .3. With
this charge, motorists could receive a criminal fine
ranging from several hundred euro to more than line when drinking. This rule is not an exact science

A sinking sun, a sinking feeling

Stopping winter from bringing colder temperatures, less sunlight and more precipitation might be
out of human control, however, fighting off seasonal
depression with a healthy lifestyle is not.
The Mental Health Clinic, the Health and
Wellness Center and the other entities are here to
provide a stronger training montage than a “Rocky”
movie.
Staying active physically and socially is the first
step toward preventing the onset of seasonal depression. Even the most active individuals can still succumb to these effects, and Ramstein has services to
provide a solution.
“Prevention is the best treatment,” said Tech. Sgt.
Arin Aviles, 86th Medical Operations Squadron
mental health clinic NOCIC. “Depression can affect
anyone, and we want our community to know we
offer resources to conquer it.”
Identifying the onset of depression is also critical
in treating the condition. Noticing and then notifying care providers is crucial for resiliency.
“We highly encourage all members to embrace
the resiliency model by taking care of their physical,
spiritual, social and mental health rather than spending time alone and being inactive,” Aviles said. “If a
decline is noticeable in these pillars, it may be time
to seek help.”
The mental health clinic is not the only option
for treatment either. Ramstein offers a handful of
services to help alleviate this issue.
“We not only have services available here at
our clinic but there are counselors available at the
Airman & Family Readiness Center, military and
family life counselors, the chaplain and a 10,000-

lux lamp that simulates daylight available at the
Health and Wellness Center,” Aviles said.
Utilizing available resources to overcome life difficulties is important. Having providers available is
also important.
“Accommodating as many people as possible is
always our goal,” said Sarah Clum, 86th Aerospace
Medicine Squadron health and fitness specialist.
“Providing services to overcome these life obstacles
is necessary for a successful and thriving workplace.”
Seasonal depression may not impact everyone,
but for those it does, it can be difficult to get over.
Thankfully, with the dedication of the health professionals here, Airmen have the tools they need to
lace up their gloves and go 10 rounds, leaving
seasonal depression to deal with its own health
issues.
To learn how to lead a healthier lifestyle and
once again rise to the top, contact the Mental
Health Clinic at 479-2390 or the HAWC at 4804292.

Inspecting, maintaining, packing,

“AFE provides exceptional support to
the warfighter,” said Tech. Sgt. Timothy

Equipment failure prevention is key
for AFE technicians; rigorous and frequent inspections of flight equipment are
necessary to ensure everything works
when needed.
“Everything we do is precautionary,”
said Airman 1st Class Mitchell Lagan,
86th OSS AFE technician. “When aircrews are in a bad situation, they’re
going to use what we do to get back
safely.”
A lost life is detrimental to the
Airman’s family and the Air Force.
By supplying all the needed aircraft
escape equipment, the 86th OSS safeguards the Air Force’s most valuable
resource.
“We handle the emergency equipment on aircraft as well,” Lagan
said. “Oxygen systems, parachutes,
flotation devices, land survival vests
and all the other required equipment
needed to survive an incident. If an
incident occurred, this equipment would
be necessary to save the lives of the aircrew.”

ne of the most important responsibilities the Army has is to remember
and continue to support the families of Soldiers who have made the
ultimate sacrifice for their country.
Baumholder has taken this responsibility to heart and created a Remembrance
Room that serves to honor and remember
Baumholder Soldiers who have given their lives
for their country and their surviving family members.
The room officially opened Nov. 6 and features 92 photographs with brass nameplates of
Baumholder Soldiers who have died in combat,

On the hallway wall next to the room’s
entrance is a mural honoring the 92 Soldiers and
their families. The mural reaches from the floor

“That’s one of the ways we are tying the families to the Soldiers honored in this room,” said

We’ll forget the motorcades. We’ll forget the

that died and gave their lives for our country
and the things that we believe in, and I hope that
we all would continue to remember them and
continue to remember why they made this sacrifice,” said Blonza Graves, VFW commander,
Post 2566. “This is an incredible way for us to
never forget, not only those Soldiers that have
given their lives for our country, but more importantly to remember the survivors and to let them
know that we are here for them.”
“In my opinion that is the most important
mission that we have as a military as we continue
to move forward — to remember and to take care
of the survivors,” Sullivan said.

Residential burglaries
Burglaries do not only happen in winter. The amount of burglaries rises during the dark season, since
darkness protects perpetrators.
While the total amount of burglaries into apartments in Kaiserslautern increased by 33.2 percent in 2012,
the number of burglaries during the day (between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m.) increased by 50 percent.
In 2011, there were 205 burglaries and 84 happened during the day. In 2012, there were 273 burglaries,
and 126 of them were during the day.
For many people, a burglary at their own apartment or house is a big shock. It is an intrusion into privacy.
The feeling of being safe is lost. A burglary may result in psychological problems, which can be worse than
the material damage.
To help stop burglaries, residents should use preventive behaviors like locking doors at all times, lighting
up the residence, pulling up rollladens during the day and having vigilant neighbors.
Polizei will give individual tips on how to secure homes. Safety experts are available to inform residents
free of charge. They are also able to come out to the apartment or house. Simple technical safety items help
keep burglars away.
Most burglars are not professionals; they just look for good opportunities, such as badly secured entrance
doors, windows and patio doors.

VISIT, from Page 1
Talley reinforced several key points during his
first visit to the 7th CSC and Europe since he took
command last year. The foreign consequence management mission, he noted, demonstrated several
positive qualities.
“First, it shows the great capabilities of our citizen-soldiers, and as the Army’s Reserve, we have
the 7th CSC stationed right here in Europe in direct
support of U.S. Army Europe. And as I went around
there were a couple things that caught my attention,” Talley said. “That is, first off, the passion that
these Soldiers have for what they do, and, secondly,
is how they take civilian-acquired skills and use
those to help execute their military duties.”
Breedlove’s visit to the 7th CSC highlighted the
second day. He led several general officers during
a foreign consequence management demonstration
event on the parade field next to 7th CSC headquarters.
“The fact that you had a combatant commander,
General Breedlove, to take the time to come down
and spend most of the day with the Soldiers of
the 7th and realize what they’re doing to support
the Army who supports him through U.S. Army
Europe — that’s very impressive,” Talley said. “It’s
very impressive that you have a combatant commander that really understands the importance that
the Reserve has to help the active component get
the mission requirements completed, especially in
Europe.”
CSC personnel at all levels responded favorably
to the visit.
“I think his (Talley’s) visit was a good opportunity for the command to showcase our capabilities
in foreign consequence management,” said Capt.
Joshua Koncar, logistics officer, 361st Civil Affairs
Brigade, 7th CSC.
“Today was a great day,” said Brig. Gen. Paul M.
Benenati, commanding general of 7th CSC. “We’re
responsible for all the disaster response operations
— what we call consequence management, which is
typically known as a chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear event or accidental spill and humanitarian assistance and emergency preparedness.”
The command will continue to work with
EUCOM, the Third Air Force, U.S. Army Europe,
the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, as well as
other general officers and senior civilians, Benenati
said.
“We’re reviewing with them the plan for how
we’ll go about meeting those obligations that
they’ve given us to be responsible for those missions throughout Europe,” Benenati said.
Talley also spoke about his vision for the Army
Reserve to support the Chief of Staff of the Army’s
regionally aligned forces concept.
“We will take Army forces and align them, in
this case, with the Army service component command in support of the combatant command,”
Talley said. “For us, it means taking our
combat support and service support — most of
that is in the Army Reserve as opposed to the
active Army and the Army National Guard — and
aligning it to better support, in this case, General
Campbell of the U.S. Army Europe and General
Breedlove, the combatant commander for (European
Command).”
On the third day of his visit, Talley responded to
questions from a crowd of more than 100 7th CSC
Soldiers, civilians and family members during a
town hall.
Talley answered queries on topics including
the effects of sequestration on the U.S. Army
Reserve, future Reserve force manning, direct
commissioning, Sexual Harassment/Assault
Response and Prevention program, and suicide prevention.
“I just want to thank you for your commitment to
the Army and the Army Reserve,” Talley said during his opening remarks at the town hall. “All of
you should feel proud of being part of the 7th CSC,
and I want to grow it and make it even better in the
future.”
Attendees said the town hall provided an ideal
opportunity to discuss relevant issues.
“I thought the town hall provided good insight
on the strategic level on where the Army Reserve
is heading and the direction of the Army Reserve in
Europe,” Koncar said. “That was good for us to hear
and understand.”

They do it one note at a time, using
the USAFE Band.
“We speak the international language of music,” said Staff Sgt.

one person to speak every language
here in Europe and Africa, but with
our instruments we can get through to
people very quickly.”
The USAFE Band is made up of 45
members, who travel Europe, Africa
and the Middle East. Throughout their
travels, many band members have
seen the differences their performances make firsthand.
“It hit me that I was an ambassador
when I came to this assignment at
USAFE and we started our first missions in different countries,” Friedman
said. “One of the first places I realized our impact was when I went to
Serbia and we played for people
who were pretty much standoffish
about the U.S. military. I could see
throughout the concert they went from
crossing their arms and looking
very stern to clapping, singing and
dancing along. I knew I was making
a difference, and that’s what I’m here
to do.”
Other Airmen set the tone for people’s impression of Americans.
“We go places and represent
America to people who’ve never met
an American,” said Master Sgt. Joshua

At its peak, the Air Force had four
bands stationed throughout Europe.
Now there is only one, but the USAFE
Band continues to accomplish the Air

shows a year.
“It’s a vital part of the mission that
we’re doing right now,” Friedman
said. “Just as people go out and fly

our job to promote what the Air Force
is trying to do, which is a mission of
world peace.”
Though they may not say a single

86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs
On Ramstein, 1st Lt. Adrianna
Perez, 86th Comptroller Squadron
deputy budget officer, has a duty
that directly affects Airmen twice
a month. I interviewed her to see
what she does and how she does it.
Q: What does your job entail?
A: I maintain financial accountability of all our funds and give
decision support to the commanders. I also ensure our budget
analysts understand all of these
restrictions, limitations, guidelines
and policies we need to follow and
then provide that to the resource
advisers.
Q: What are some of the
challenges you face on a daily
basis?
A: Making sure that people
spend within the guidance of our
AFIs (Air Force Instructions) and
ensuring they are making legal
purchases.
Q: What do you like most about
your job?
A: What truly makes me happy
and excited to come to work every
day are all of our Airmen. I love the people I work
with. It’s always a blast working with these people,
because everyone’s so smart and so driven to do
their job, and that really helps us. If I didn’t have
folks that take care of stuff, I’d be here day and
night, and I would never leave the office. I truly
value people I can depend on, and these are folks I
know I can rely on.
First Lt. Adrianna Perez, 86th Comptroller Squadron deputy budget officer, prepares the day’s itinerary
Nov. 12 on Ramstein. Perez ensures squadrons spend within the guidelines of the Air Force Instruction and
maintain financial accountability within the wing.
Q: Did you do anything before the Air Force
related to your job now?
A: I went through ROTC (Reserve Officer
Training Core) at Miami University in Ohio. I’ve
always tried to put myself in leadership roles whenever I’m a part of something, whether it’s a small
piece of the puzzle or solely leading something. I
think I’ve postured myself throughout my entire life
to be in these positions to provide decision support
or make difficult decisions.
Q: What’s an average day like in your office?
A: Hectic. Honestly, the budget world is very
interesting because you’ll have a lull, but then one
day, things hit the fan. I’ll tell my buddies, “Yeah,
I should be free for lunch tomorrow. No big deal,”

Nov. 14, 1965 — Vietnam War: The

The battle involved close air support by

Nov. 12, 2001 — Afghanistan: On
the night of Nov. 12, Taliban forces
flee from the city of Kabul, leaving
under the cover of darkness. By the
time Northern Alliance forces arrived
in the afternoon of Nov. 13, only bomb
craters, burned foliage and the burntout shells of Taliban gun emplacements
and positions were there to greet them.
A group of about 20 hardline fighters hiding in the city’s park were the
only remaining defenders. This Taliban
group was killed in a 15-minute gun
battle, being heavily outnumbered and
having had little more than a telescope
to shield them. After these forces were
neutralized, Kabul was in the hands of
the U.S./NATO forces and the Northern
Alliance.

Soldiers bring ‘First in Support’ attitude to KHS mentorship program
Story and photo by
Staff Sgt. Alexander A. Burnett
21st Theater Sustainment
Command Public Affairs
Most Soldiers learn the ways of
leadership from a very early stage in
their military career. They are taught
to use their experience, education and
abilities to mentor younger Soldiers
and accomplish the mission. Some
Soldiers in the Kaiserslautern area
will use the same qualities to mentor
high school students.
Soldiers from the 21st Theater
Sustainment Command volunteered for
and attended mentorship orientation
Nov. 6 at Kaiserslautern High School
on Vogelweh Military Complex.
The 13 officers and NCOs from
the 21st TSC’s headquarters and 16th
Sustainment Brigade first met with the
students they would mentor. Soldiers
and students discussed areas they
could focus on together to help these
high schoolers improve their grades
and prepare for life after high school.
Many of the students requesting a
mentor have low grade point averages and are seeking a way to improve
their academic scores, said Cynthia R.
Jackson, the mentorship coordinator
for Kaiserslautern High School.
“It is important for these students
to interact with career-oriented and
college-prepared adults who have
been in (the student’s) place,” Jackson
said. “These partnerships will give
the students a greater ability to strive
for college, a civilian career or even a
military career.”
After the initial meet and greet,
Soldiers and students received a briefing on the responsibilities, benefits
and goals of the mentorship program.
They looked over the mentorship
schedule, discussed how mentors
could check their student’s grades
online and learned the procedure for
deconflicting schedules. Students and
mentors with experience in the program shared their experiences before
the high schoolers were returned to
their classes.
“I was involved in the mentorship
program last year, and it was an amazing experience,” said Sgt. 1st Class
Justin D. Puls, the 21st TSC’s senior
retention operations NCO. “It is a very
rewarding experience being able to
mentor a future leader.”
Finally, the Soldiers received a tour

of the school. They learned how to
sign in to the high school and meet
with their student.
“I have been doing some kind of
mentorship since I joined the Army,
but this is my first time mentoring
at Kaiserslautern High School,” said
Master Sgt. Dwayne F. Dozier, the
21st TSC’s chief paralegal NCO. “I
am looking forward to this experience
and the opportunity to mentor a young
student.”

An innovative therapy is now being practiced at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center
that helps recreational athletes as well as athletes competing at the highest levels.
Prolotherapy and Platelet Rich Plasma
(PRP) injections have been performed at the
LRMC Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
Service since 2010. The LRMC PM&R Clinic
was one of the first clinics in U.S. Army
Medical Command to adopt these innovative treatment modalities. These injections
have proven effective in treating a variety
of chronic musculoskeletal ailments such as
tennis elbow, jumper’s knee, Achilles tendon
disorders, ankle sprains and shoulder ligament
sprains, as well as an emerging treatment for
knee and hip osteoarthritis.
One patient in particular experienced tremendous improvement, allowing him to compete on the wrestling mat after a potentially
devastating injury.
Senior Master Sgt. Steve Horton has been a
competitive Greco-Roman wrestler for nearly
four decades and is no stranger to competing
at the highest levels of his sport. As a worldclass athlete, he is also no stranger to musculoskeletal injuries, but the most severe of these
occurred in August 2012 while training for the
Greco-Roman World Championships.
While training, he injured a muscle in his
leg and was treated by Maj. (Dr.) George
Smolinski, chief of LRMC PM&R, who recommended prolotherapy.
“Prolotherapy can help heal chronically
damaged soft tissue in the body by using
the body’s own mechanisms to heal itself,”
Smolinski said.
Prolotherapy involves injecting an irritating solution into a damaged muscle, ligament
or tendon, which then causes inflammation.
Inflammation heals - that’s why you have
some redness that appears around a cut - and
we rely on that process to then heal damaged
muscles, tendons and ligaments. Ligaments
and tendons have very poor blood supply, and
if they’re chronically damaged there’s a significant chance that they won’t heal.
PRP injections are similar to prolotherapy injections. PRP injections involve taking a patient’s
own blood, spinning it in a centrifuge to extract
the platelets, and then injecting the platelets into
the damaged muscle, tendon or ligament.
Platelets lie at the heart of this treatment, as
platelets are responsible for not only stopping a
cut from bleeding, but are also responsible for
healing damaged tissue. Much in the same way
prolotherapy works, platelet rich plasma causes
release of the body’s own chemicals called
“growth factors” at the site of injury. By injecting these platelets into damaged soft tissue,
these growth factors are then released from the
platelets, allowing the soft tissue to heal.
Horton received the injection and was able to
successfully compete in the championships in
Budapest, Hungary, and represent the U.S. As
the matches progressed, however, he re-injured
his leg and again sought treatment at LRMC.
“The initial prognosis from the doctors was
that my wrestling career was over and that I
would never have the strength back in my leg
that I once had,” Horton said. “I was also told
that the healing time would be at least one
year. Once again, I sought out Dr. Smolinski’s
advice to see if prolotherapy would help.”
After seeking Smolinski’s advice, Horton
received a PRP injection in February and was
able to return two months later to the mat at the
U.S. National Championships in Las Vegas. He
said coaches and other wrestlers were amazed
at the recovery he had made. Horton placed
second in the Freestyle and third in the GrecoRoman competitions at nationals, losing only
to the defending world champion from Russia.
These therapies are available to all DOD
beneficiaries. See your primary care manager

Squadron with activities and
events including the Rockin’
4th of July, NCAA basketball games, organizing USO
events and awarding prizes to
the community.
By giving back and organizing events around the KMC,
the 86th FSS has its sights set
on always improving the lives
of those living here.
Recently, the 86th FSS
awarded a $1,000 scholarship, more than $2,500 in cash
prizes, various electronic devices, Air Force Club

ager, was among the winners of the Air Force Club
Scholarship offered through
the 86th FSS.
Eiring said in a previous interview she earned the
scholarship by writing about
her inspiration — her father.
She added that the scholarship
will greatly help her in her
future educational endeavors.
The 86th FSS wants KMC
members to discover all of
the facilities, free events and
programs they have to offer.
Whether it’s offering a vari-
ety of food and drink specials
at dining facilities, becoming
active at the fitness centers
with group classes or personal
training, the 86th FSS is trying
to give back to the community.
Family programs, including family child care, school
age programs, teen centers
and youth sports, are also
available, and the Ramstein
and Vogelweh community
centers offer concert tickets,
language classes for all levels,
music lessons, family nights,
bingo nights and more.
“We put people first,” said
Lt. Col. Keithen Washington,
86th FSS commander. “We take
pride in what we do, and we
strive to preform our mission in
a way that exceeds exceptions.”
Other 86th FSS winners
were Rebecca Diaz, Senior

New Travel Health Clinic opens at LRMC
Editor’s note: For medical emergencies, all KMC
members must utilize the LRMC emergency services. Service members seeking specialty care should
speak with their primary care manager for more
information.
Before you pack your bags for an exotic trip to
Africa, Asia or South America, make an appointment at the new Travel Health Clinic at the
Occupational Health Clinic at Landstuhl Regional
Medical Center. The new clinic could save you from
a week of traveler’s diarrhea or something more
serious, like malaria.
“Many of the tropical diseases you may encounter while traveling abroad are preventable with the
proper guidance, medication and vaccinations on
board,” said Col. (Dr.) Eric Shuping, chief of primary care at LRMC.
Beginning Nov. 1, service members and families
medically assigned to LRMC could schedule an
appointment at the Travel Health Clinic by calling
the LRMC Occupational Health Clinic at 590-4162
or 06371-9464-4162. The Travel Health Clinic
offers advice on how to avoid diseases, provides
medications to prevent disease transmission, offers
opportunities to update vaccinations and gives tips
on what to bring to certain destinations, such as an
emergency travel kit or mosquito netting.
Similar travel services are offered for service
members and families medically assigned to the
Ramstein Clinic, including disease avoidance, vaccinations and tips for travel. Services are offered
out of the Deployment Medicine/Travel Medicine
Clinic, Bldg. 2114, Room 126. Appointments are
preferred and can be made by calling 479-2525 or
06371-46-2525, but walk-ins are welcome, too.
Not sure if you might need vaccinations or medications? Go to the CDC traveler’s health website first at
http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel. They have a trip builder
program where you enter the country and type of travel. Specific country risk information is then provided.
Travelers may find some vaccinations are best taken or
not taken after discussing the risks and benefits.
“A provider can look at their vaccinations, look
at their proposed travel plans and prescribe medication, vaccines and travel advice specifically tailored
to their travel plans,” Shuping said. “This could be
for sailing down the Nile or a three-month mission,
say, in Uganda or Peru.”
However, if you are traveling on official government business for less than 30 days, the travel
medicine clinic can be used. However, if the service
member needs a predeployment screening, it is best
to be evaluated at your service’s pre-deployment
screening site. For the Army in Kaisersluatern, this
would be the Kleber Clinic, and for the Air Force
it’s the Ramstein clinic. Shuping recommends people contact the travel health clinic as soon as they
book their trip because some preventive steps will
take time to implement.
“Some vaccines may need to be ordered ahead of
time and you may require a few doses to provide the
best protection,” Shuping said. “Also, for something
like anti-malarials, you want to start the medication
before leaving. This is to see, one, if you tolerate
the medication without side effects and, two, so if
a malarious mosquito bites you, you have enough
medication in your system to be protected.”
People considered high-risk for malaria are the ones
who are “visiting friends and relatives” in malariaendemic regions. Shuping said your protection against

malaria after leaving a malaria-endemic country greatly decreases after only six to eight months.
“When you return to visit your friends and family,
you are effectively malaria-naïve,” he said. “And
your sensitivity to apply DEET and take anti-malarial medications is not as great as say a couple going
on a trip to a game reserve in Kenya who is more
likely to ‘religiously’ take their prescribed medications for malaria.”
However, most people will face the all too-common problem of traveler’s diarrhea.
“If you are spending thousands of dollars to go on
a trip, bringing some carefully chosen antibiotics can
prevent you from worshipping the porcelain goddess
for days,” Shuping said. “It can also decrease your
symptoms over 24 hours, which means a lot when
you have a tight timeline of events and you may have
to miss some because you are sick.”
For an enjoyable vacation, Shuping recommends
investing the time up front.

Kingfish catch more wins
T
he Kaiserslautern Kingfish are accustomed to winning, and dominance in
the pool continued in their last two
meets.
On Oct. 26, the Kingfish hosted
the Stuttgart Piranhas, Vilseck Vipers and Hohenfels
Tigers at the Ramstein Aquatic Center, swimming
away with another victory. The Kingfish started
the meet with three wins in the first three relays,
including a squeaker of a finish in the 13-14 mixed
medley relay, just touching out the Piranhas by .66.
After that, it was a matter of methodically stacking
up points until the end, winning 895-837-151-54.
The age 13 to 19 butterfly events continued to
be a source of pride for coach Karina Plocek, who
described them as “incredible” as every swimmer
in that event achieved a personal best, including
Matthew Pohlmiller, 14, who broke a 10-year record

set by Justin Smith in 2003, with a new time of
1:06.22.
Other broken records in the 1500-meter time trials included Letia Reed, 11, who broke the record
set by Tessla Barns in 2007 with a time of 23:49.34,
and Danielle Davis, 14, who shattered the record set
by Teri Plotkin in 2005 by 14 seconds, with a new
time of 19.22.02. In addition, five swimmers —
Andrew Hendrickson, 9, Matthew Cembrano, 11,
Jamie Butler, 12, Javier Quinones, 14, and Jacob
Gibbs, 15 — all achieved four personal best times
in the meet.
The Kingfish then took their momentum to
Lakenheath on Nov. 2. With only 40 swimmers
entered in the meet, the Kaiserslautern team still
brought home the win, taking honors with 461
points over SHAPE and Lakenheath, who had 292
and 284 points, respectively.
Five swimmers — Mackenzie Hanna, 8, Tuck
Elliot, 8, Jamison Casey, 10, Jacob Clarkson, 10,
Danielle Davis and Everett Plocek, 17 — won all
three of their individual events.
Eight swimmers — Mackenzie Hanna, 8, Tuck
Elliot, 8, Taeve Elliot, 10, Casey, Clarkson, Ben
Davis, 13, Libby Gorske, 13, and Patrick Baty, 14
— achieved three personal best times. Tuck Elliot
and Jamison Casey each had a personal best over 17
seconds — Casey’s in the 200-meter freestyle and
Elliot’s in the 100-meter individual medley.
The Kingfish will host the next meet Saturday at
the Ramstein Aquatic Center. If early season results
are any indication, they plan to add another tick
in the victory column before heading to Antwerp
for the 2013 European Forces Swim League Long
Distance Championships.
