Jump week brings five NATO countries together

Airlift Wing at Papa Air Base, Hungary,
conducted its first personnel drop here
June 15 during a four-day joint country
exercise.
The training is a part of International
Jump Week, which includes five
NATO countries participating in airborne jump operations to build
partnerships and capabilities needed to
meet future challenges.
More than 100 paratroopers jumped
out of a C-17 Globemaster III from the
HAW and C-130J Hercules from the
37th Airlift Squadron at Ramstein. The
jumpers were made up of Belgium,
German, United Kingdom and
Norwegian servicemembers and U.S.
Air Force, Army and Marine servicemembers. About 300 jumps took place
in three days.

POWIDZ AIR BASE, Poland — Brig. Gen.
Mark Dillon, 86th Airlift Wing commander,
strengthened the bond with the 86th’s Polish sister
wing, the 3rd Airlift Wing, during a ceremony here
June 21.
Along with members of the Polish Air Force,
Airmen from the 86th AW and 435th Air Ground
Operations Wing from Ramstein attended the signing of the letter of intention by General Dillon and
the 3rd AW commander, Polish Air Force Brig. Gen.
Tadeusz Mikutel, as they formalized their wings’
relationship.
“I want to thank General Mikutel for his leadership, vision and hospitality as we continue to build
on the partnership between Powidz and Ramstein
air bases … indeed between our two nations’ air
forces,” General Dillon said.
Before the ceremony, General Mikutel; Polish Air
Force Lt. Col. Mieczyslaw Gaudyn, 3rd AW deputy
commander of operations; and Maj. Marek Kruk,
3rd AW commander of maintenance, broke down
the structure and tasks for General Dillon of the 3rd
AW and the process of training within the wing.
“We really appreciate the cooperation with
Ramstein,” General Mikutel said. “And, we are
looking forward to expanding that cooperation.”

Independence Day: our proud heritage

For those of us serving in the American Armed Forces family,
Independence Day is a very personal holiday. We know firsthand that
protecting our country and preserving freedom comes at a heavy price.
Throughout our country’s history, military members have traveled
throughout the world defending the American way of life. As the U.S.
Army, our oldest military service, celebrates its 235th birthday this year,
we are reminded of the long history of our armed forces and our commitment to our nation’s independence.
When our founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence on
July 4, 1776, the 1-year-old Continental Army needed to quickly change
from a rabble of farmers ready for a brief revolt against the British to
an organized fighting force. Facing the highly-trained British army, the
new Continental Army quickly learned to maximize every available
resource to match the British on the battlefield. Using a mix of traditional
European war tactics and a new kind of warfare learned from centuries
of battle with Native Americans, the American revolutionaries eventually
compelled the British to grant our new nation undisputed independence.
Their combination of will, resourcefulness and high discipline has
stayed with the U.S. military ever since, and today we stand as the most
powerful military force in the history of humankind.
Today more than 3.5 million people serve in the U.S. military, 222,000
of whom are deployed throughout 150 countries across the globe. We can
be proud to serve, to protect our nation and the ideals handed down by
our founding fathers.
As I plan to celebrate Independence Day with my family this year, it
gives me great pleasure to serve with you, the fine men and women of the
KMC. Every day, from the flightline to the chow line, you are all contributing to our country’s historic journey.
Wherever you may be while celebrating our nation’s birthday this year,
I wish you a safe and enjoyable holiday.

Take part in KMC’s Rockin’ Third of July
This year’s KMC Rockin’ Third of July celebration takes place from 2 p.m. to midnight July 3 at
Kapaun Air Station. The event includes musical
entertainment, children’s activities, games, food
specialties, prizes and a fireworks display.
During the celebration, children can enjoy bumper cars, a Ferris wheel, merry-go-round and bouncy castles. Games include darts, a fishing game,
pingpong, and many more. There will also be band
performances by Clay Crotts Band, Fishermann’s
Friend and Jom Tones.
Private organizations will set up food booths
offering barbecue chicken, bratwurst, cheeseburgers, hamburgers, chicken wings, hot dogs, lumpia,
pulled pork, schwenksteak, funnel cakes, cotton
candy, lemonade and root beer floats.
“Due to safety issues we are asking visitors not
to bring coolers, pets or glass,” said Jade Muench,
Community Support Flight chief.
A give-away with prizes from private sponsors
starts at 8:30 p.m. on stage. Visitors who signed up
from 2 to 8 p.m. at the sponsorship tent can win gift
cards, cash, furniture gift certificates and a weekend
getaway.
The firework show is scheduled to start around 10:30 p.m.

are encouraged to walk to the
festivities on Kapaun or use
Gate Golf 1. Other residents
should carpool, if possible.
Non-housing residents will not
be allowed to park in the housing area. Main parking will be
in the big parking lot by vehicle
registration.
“We recommend that visitors enter thru golf 5 (Vogelweh
main gate). Our visitor center
will process visitors faster than
Pulaski, 3 to 5 minutes compared to a 15 to 20 minute wait
time at Pulaski,” said Capt. Eric DeTurk, 569th U.S.
Forces Police Squadron operations officer.
The shuttle pick-up points will be located at the
dead end of Pulaski (adjacent to PONDS kennels)
and Bldg. 2913/2915 (Pulaski USO center), however be prepared to have to walk moderate distances.

21st TSC top Soldiers battle
for title of WOY, WLOY

MANNHEIM, Germany — It was all heart
and determination for the nine participants
who competed in this year’s grueling threeday competition to become the Warrior and
Warrior Leader of the Year for the 21st Theater
Sustainment Command here June 13 to 15.
The competitors arrived at the Lampertheim
Training Area just outside of Mannheim to
begin the competition with an Army physical
fitness test. During the fitness test, the Soldiers
were closely monitored as they tried to make
every repetition count.
After their fitness test, the Soldiers were
only given about 15 to 20 minutes before they
were briefed and began suiting up for a rigorous 12-mile ruck march.
The day turned into night as the Soldiers
trudged through a night land navigation course
followed by a day land navigation course the
very next morning.
The competitors also faced the tasks of firing and qualifying with various small arms
weapons, leading a squad of Soldiers through
an urban assault course and brawling in
combatives.

Supply Company, 391st Combat Sustainment
Support Battalion, 16th Sustainment Brigade
in Bamberg, Germany, and a WOY competitor,
said he takes the competition personally.
“It makes me stronger. Everything I do I do
it for my son, so he will have somebody to look
up to. That is my push,” Specialist Brown said.
The competition was capped off with an
exhausting situational training exercise course
filled with multiple collective tasks to see
how the participants fared in a crisis situa-
tion. The sequence of events concluded with a
board appearance, which was presided over by
Command Sgt. Maj. James Spencer, the command sergeant major of the 21st TSC.
After the Soldiers completed the competition, the warriors headed to Panzer Kaserne
where they were reunited with families and
Soldiers from their home units to enjoy a barbecue in celebration of making it through the
arduous three-day competition.
After commending all the Soldiers for their
hard work, Maj. Gen. Patricia McQuistion,
the commanding general for the 21st TSC,
announced before a large audience that Sgt.
Richard Hunter, the communications noncommissioned officer for the 240th QM Co.,
391st CSSB, 16th Sust. Bde. was the 21st TSC
Warrior Leader of the Year.
General McQuistion then announced Spc.
Michael Freas Jr., a human resources specialist for the 7th Warrior Training Brigade, 7th
Civil Support Command from Grafenwöhr,
Germany, as the 21st TSC Warrior of the Year.
Sergeant Hunter said it was the culmination
of several things that helped him achieve the
top Warrior Leader honors for the 21st TSC.
“Determination, dedication and a lot of hard
work, sweat and tears were poured into the
preparation for the outcome of this competition,” Sergeant Hunter said.
Specialist Freas said the assistance he
received from his leadership was significant in
his winning the competition.
“I have been receiving a lot of support from
my unit. They have been very helpful and my
NCO support channel has backed me up the
whole way,” Specialist Freas said.
Sergeant Hunter and Specialist Freas will
represent the 21st TSC at the U.S. Army
Europe Warrior and Warrior Leader of the Year
competition later this year.

thanked one another for their partnership.
“As we share tactics, techniques and procedures between
our air forces, we can continue to capture ‘best practices’ and
improve our operational skills,” General Dillon said. “As
iron sharpens iron, Airmen from Powidz and Ramstein will
sharpen one another, learn from one another and build on a
relationship that began many years ago.”
As the ink dried on the letter of intention, both commanders pledged to hold to what they had just signed.
“With common purpose to strengthen our alliance, advance
our interoperability and improve our mutual security and
cooperation, we establish the 86th Airlift Wing and the 3rd
Airlift Wing as sister wings.”
The 86th AW provides world-class airlift, expeditionary
combat support, full-spectrum airfield operations and base
services for the KMC.
The 3rd AW was formed in April 2007. Its purpose is to
organize and supervise air transport and air drop, as well as
medical evacuations and peacetime search and rescue.

Landstuhl and stole a pair of sunglasses and money.
2:25 p.m.: An Army NCO was involved in a
major traffic accident after he fell asleep at the
wheel in Kaiserslautern and struck a guardrail.
The accident resulted in disabling damages to the
vehicle.

8 a.m.: An Air Force civilian reported damage/
larceny to private property after he noticed an
unknown individual had broken into an AAFES
warehouse on Vogelweh and stole three pairs of
truck keys, 26 cans of Monster Energy Drink, one
can of Redbull, three bags of Cheetos, eight bags of
Doritos, three packages of Pop Tarts, two cans of Dr
Pepper, one can of ginger ale, five bags of gummy
bears and 26 cans of beer.
12 p.m.: An Air Force SNCO and an Air Force
civilian were apprehended for assault after a verbal altercation between the two turned physical on
Kapaun.
June 16
1:08 p.m.: An Airman was involved in a major
vehicle accident with a
local national and an Army
civilian in Kaiserslautern.
The accident resulted in minor
damages to all vehicles and one
occupant was transported to LRMC for medical
treatment for shoulder and arm injuries.
5:01 p.m.: An Air Force NCO was apprehended for failure to obey a lawful order after it was
discovered he was operating a vehicle on a
revoked USAREUR license on Miesau Army
Depot.
June 19– 10 volunteers, 22 lives saved
5:45 a.m.: An Airman was apprehended for
drunken driving after he was involved in a minor
vehicle accident in Landstuhl.
5:41 p.m.: An Army NCO was apprehended for
Article 85 of the UCMJ/Desertion on Vogelweh.
The NCO was reported as a deserter on Dec. 22,
2004.
10:09 p.m.: An Army NCO reported damage
to private property after he noticed an unknown
individual had shattered his vehicle window in
Kindsbach.
June 18
5 a.m.: A Soldier was apprehended for driving

closed Monday for training.
• The Kleber VAT Office will be closed Thursday for mandatory office
maintenance and will resume regular hours July 2. The VAT offices

Airport shuttle closure
The Kaiserslautern Airport Shuttle Program has closed its
operation. The reservation desk will remain open until Thursday to
provide alternative shuttle services to customers. The program is still
honoring previous reservations.

Although earning their foreign wings is an
accomplishment in itself, the event allows each of
the nation’s military members to take away new
capabilities and experiences with them.
“It’s amazing to get everyone together and share

Ammo troops move bombs during TURBOCADS 2010

are just some
of the tools the
86th Munitions
Squadron uses to conduct
day-to-day business.
Recently, the 86th MUNS
has been busier than normal as
they have just shipped dozens
of international shipping containers as part of an exercise
called Turbo Containerized
Ammunition Distribution
System, or TURBOCADS
2010.
The shipping of the containers filled with various munitions was part of a worldwide
realignment of conventional
weapon assets.
Starting in 1994 when the
Department of Defense began
efforts to develop an overseas commercial containerized ammunition distribution
system, TURBOCADS has
developed into a movement
that involves not only Airmen
but also heavy coordination
and support from Army and
commercial transport carriers.
Although
the
actual
movement was completed
in five days, planning for
TURBOCADS 2010, which
is the first movement of this
size in five years, started
more than six months ago in
November 2009.
In the months leading up
to the actual movement of the
assets, senior munitions technicians began working with
Soldiers from the 21st Theater
Support Command to deliver
the shipments for transportation onto boats headed for
the U.S.

us the option to better ourselves, and
now with the growth of technology,
we have a chance to take those college courses, even with a hectic work
schedule.”
Airman Landry will benefit from
those education benefits, as well.
“I will definitely be taking advantage of the AU-ABC program,” said
the apprentice, who has been in the
Air Force since July 2009. “I can have
my bachelor’s degree in two years
after completion of the Community
College of the Air Force degree.”
The seminar included discussions,
question and answer sessions and a
chief’s panel.
“I definitely found the chief’s panel
to be interesting,” Airman Landry
said. “Being able to have an open
discussion with people so experienced
was a great opportunity.”
Each Airman took away something
different from the seminar that they
can apply in their own careers.
“I need to find a mentor to mold my
Air Force career after,” said Airman
Kelsey, who has been in the Air Force
since October 2008. “It should be on a
more personal level, not just business
all the time. It needs to be someone
who has been successful and who
you can talk to about everything —
someone who cares and is willing to
listen.”
As the seminar neared the end, each
Airman knew they would walk away
with something useful.
“I believe the Airman PDS is
beneficial for each and every
Airman who attends,” said Airman
McBride, who has been in the Air
Force for about a year. “It helps you
understand that all the information

during briefings aren’t just a storeand-dump. The information will
prove helpful throughout your Air
Force career.”

Distinction for her ground breaking

Earning Eagle Scout
Boy Scout Jeremiah Ross has earned the rank of
Eagle Scout, the highest honor in the Boy Scouts of
America. Jeremiah began his scouting experience
as a Tiger Cub and later earned the rank of Arrow
of Light, the highest award in Cub Scouts. Jeremiah
crossed over to Boy Scout Troop 69 in Kaiserslautern
in March 2006. His Eagle Scout leadership project
was building shelving for and reorganizing the
storage room at the Kaiserslautern Crisis Pregnancy
Center in Einsiedlerhof.

scholarship. If selected, Airmen will be discharged
from active duty to pursue a commission through
AFROTC. The scholarship pays for annual college
tuition and fees up to $18,000, plus a $750 textbook
allowance. A monthly non-taxable allowance is also
earned during the school year. Selected Airmen
may pursue any academic field that leads to their
first bachelor’s degree. The length of scholarship is
based on the time needed to finish degree work as
a full-time student, but Airmen must have at least
two years remaining in college. Airmen with prior
service must be commissioned under 31 years of
age on Dec. 1 of the year they are commissioned.

Tick season begins early in Europe

Entomologists at the U.S. Army Public Health
Command Region-Europe are reporting an early
season for ticks this year. They are already seeing
significant numbers of ticks in the field.
Ticks present the greatest vector-borne disease
risk in Europe. They carry and can transmit a host
of diseases to people and animals. Since 2001, the
incidence of Lyme disease has been on a steady
increase in Europe.
Though summer in Europe lends itself to outdoor
activities, one little blood-sucking tick can spoil it
all.
Lyme disease
Lyme disease is the most frequent tick-borne disease in Europe. A person with Lyme disease may
develop fever, headache, fatigue and a skin rash
called erythema migrans. This rash is sometimes
referred to as a “bulls-eye” rash because of its red
circular appearance. As it continues to grow, it will
often lose the redness in the center of the rash.
If the disease is left untreated, it can worsen and
cause swelling of the brain, facial paralysis and pain
and numbness in the hands, feet or other areas of
the body.
In most cases, Lyme disease can be treated with
antibiotics. No vaccine against Lyme disease is
currently available, so tick awareness is the most
important prevention measure.

Prevention
In areas where ticks are prevalent, these precautions are advised:
• Avoid waste high vegetation and wild game
trails located in and near forested areas. People are
most likely to come into contact with ticks during
spring and early fall when ticks are most active.
• Wear light-colored clothing. This makes it
easier to see crawling ticks.
• Wear long pants and tuck them into boots or
socks. Shirts should be tucked into pants at the
waist.
• Wear clothing that is treated with insect repellents. Many outdoor companies now sell outdoor
clothing pre-treated with permethrin to repel ticks
and other biting arthropods. For all other outdoor
clothing, spray them with an insect repellent containing DEET. These sprays are sold at most convenience stores.
• Apply insect repellents containing DEET to
exposed skin as directed by the product label.
• Check yourself and your children carefully for
ticks after outdoor activities. Pay close attention to
warm, moist areas of the body and to your head.
• Avoid consuming unpasteurized dairy products
(milk or cheese). Diseases transmitted by ticks, such
as Tick-borne Encephalitis, are often found in raw
dairy products.

To properly remove an embedded tick, use finetipped tweezers to firmly grasp the tick’s head
as close to the skin as possible, and pull up in a

removing the tick, clean the area with soap and
water and apply an antiseptic.
Avoid home remedies, such as hot matches,
fire, fingernail polish or other extreme methods
to remove ticks. These techniques may cause the
attached tick to regurgitate into the host.
After removing ticks, stay alert for signs of tickborne diseases. If a tick bite is followed by flu-like
symptoms and/or a skin rash, promptly see your
primary care provider for evaluation.
Ticks on pets
Ticks can also transmit diseases to pets. There are
several products, such as topical flea and tick medications and prescription collars, available to protect
pets from ticks. Contact the local veterinary clinic
for the best product to use. Never use repellents
containing DEET on pets.
Pets with protective collars may still carry ticks.
These ticks are most likely dead or dying.
Tick removal from pets is the same as for people.
If the pet is too excitable or if help is needed, call
your local veterinary clinic for assistance.

Kusel holds Italian Nights next weekend

Kusel will hold its Italian Nights from July 2 to 3. For the sixth year,
Bahnhofstrasse and the Koch’sche Markt will turn into little Italy where
various food specialties and a diversified entertaining program will be presented.
An Italian market will take the visitors on a trip across the Alps and offer
selected culinary specialties including cheese, salami and sweet pastries.
There also will be fine wines, prosecco and other drinks people can taste
directly or buy and take home. Italian meals being served will include pizza,
pasta, antipasti and delicacies from Sicily. A novelty this year will be the idea
of preparing the biggest shish kebab based on an Italian recipe.
A Vespa (scooter) meeting will be held on Koch’sche Markt.
An Italian folk music duet will walk through the decorated streets and
sing. The night of July 2, the Giovanni-Contrina Band and its singing cook
will perform, and July 3, the renowned band Da Vinci, formerly known as
Remax, will entertain the audience.
Like in recent years, organizers will offer a long shopping night July 3.
Stores will be open until midnight.

Altstadt turns into party zone

it celebrates its annual Altstadtfest
July 2 to 4. For three days and two
nights, Steinstrasse and its side streets
will be one giant open-air area.
Kaiserslautern’s Lord Mayor,
Dr. Klaus Weichel, will officially
open the event at 7 p.m. July 2 on
Martinsplatz to be followed by the
band Snailshouse taking the audience
on a time trip playing the best of the
1970s and 1980s.
The Midnight Mover family will
perform at 8 p.m. in the yard of
Wadgasser Hof on Steinstrasse and
next door, in the yard of the Kopp and
Krauss company.

Stronger and Faster

Every month, the KMC members who score a
perfect 100 on all categories of their official Air
Force Fitness Assessment are recognized with a
certificate and their picture displayed in the base
newspaper.
Last month we got some great tips from a future
triathlete. This month we will learn from another
endurance athlete who has incorporated high intensity functional training into his workouts to reduce
mileage and improve race performances, including
a well-deserved 100 on his annual fitness assessment.

Q: How many races have you competed in?
A: I have done one marathon, and I do at least
seven half-marathons each year. I have been in five
half iron man triathlons, and I’m training for a full
iron man this summer.
Q: What does your training look like leading up
to a race?
A: The summer is race season, so I will do more
endurance type activities — swimming, biking and
running. In a given week, I will do three strength
workouts, two swims, three bikes and three runs. I
make sure to take at least one day entirely off. For
strength, I do a lot of pull-ups, push-ups and situps
in intense circuits. I will also do some functional
lifts such as shoulder presses and power cleans. My
endurance workouts are varied within the week. For
example, I will do a short interval swim (such as
swimming 50 meters at all out intensity, resting and
then repeating eight times) on one day, and then a
longer, steady 1.5 mile swim another day. I’ll vary
my runs and bikes in a similar manner.
Q: What is the purpose of varying intensity in
your endurance work?
A: Your body adapts very quickly to things. If
you do the same thing over and over, you will peak
and plateau. You need to change things often to keep
