United Way of Western Connecticut 2007 ANNUAL REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY Live United tm Bethel Bridgewater Brookfield Danbury Kent New Fairfield WE ARE THE LEADER IN MOBILIZING THE RESOURCES TO IMPROVE LIVES AND OUR COMMUNITIES Newtown New Milford Redding Ridgefield Roxbury Sherman Stamford Warren Washington From our Leaders 2007 was a significant year for our United Way. On July 1, 2007 United Way of Western Connecticut was formed as the result of merging the three United Ways of Stamford, Northern Fairfield County and Housatonic/Shepaug. The driving force behind this integration was always the opportunity to improve lives in a more meaningful way. Before the merger, each of our three United Ways had its own board of directors looking at local issues and making decisions locally. The new United Way of Western Connecticut allows us to think on a regional level and then execute local efforts to solve problems. INCOME EDUCATION HEALTH United Way of Western Connecticut is working to advance the common good by focusing on education, income and health. These are the building blocks for a good life - a quality education that leads to a stable job, enough income to support a family through retirement, and good health. OUR VISION We have a bold vision for the 15 town region we serve. By mobilizing resources within our communities we plan to get children ready for school, close the achievement gap in our cities and towns, and create financial stability and accessible healthcare for working families. We will do this through both local and regional efforts and with the help of many partners in our communities. Rey Giallongo Today we have one governing board comprised of members from each community to provide needed expertise and perspective. Three June Renzulli Community Councils continue to focus on local priorities, concentrating on identifying community needs, building long term funding sources and allocating resources to local service programs. Our promise has been to keep a local presence in all three communities, ensuring our donors that their dollars are spent in their local community. And we have done that. As we look to our future, it includes a bold vision - and requires you to be part of it. When we reach out a hand to one, we influence the condition of all. We all win when a child succeeds in school, when families are financially stable and when people have good health. Rey Giallongo First County Bank June Renzulli CEO, United Way of Western Connecticut OUR GOAL United Way is about creating opportunities for a better life for all. Our goal is to create long-lasting change that prevents problems from happening in the first place. We invite you to be part of the change. Together, united, we can inspire hope and create opportunities for a better tomorrow. Board of Directors Officers Rey Giallongo Chairman First County Bank Lynn D. INCOME United Way of Western Connecticut (UWWC) seeks to identify and address underlying causes as an effective way of tackling issues and transforming communities. Yet, community issues stemming from personal, economic, and environmental factors are growing increasingly more complex. The rising costs of housing, healthcare, utilities, and education, coupled with changes in the economy, have left many hardworking individuals struggling to support themselves and their families. That’s why United Way supports multiple approaches to helping members of our community live independently and have the ability to support their families. Programs that we funded in 2007 to increase self sufficiency include job training, supportive housing, transportation, and providing for basic needs such as food, utilities and clothing. In all, United Way of Western Connecticut is investing over $1,225,000 into programs and initiatives that increase people’s ability to live independently and successfully. 2 Funded programs that promote financial stability and self sufficiency NORTHERN FAIRFIELD COUNTY Ability Beyond Disability, Access Community Transportation, Transitional Services for Young Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder AIDS Project Rent Subsidy American Red Cross Wheels, RSVP, Volunteer Services, Distaster Relief Amos House Transitional Living Program Association of Religious Communities The Emergency Aid Network, Resettlement Assistance CACD Neighborhood Services, Individual Development Account Program Catholic Charities Family Loan Program Connecticut Legal Services Legal Aid Family & Children’s Aid Home Care Program Hispanic Center Case Management Interlude Intensive Residential Support Program, Outreach Program Ridgefield Sunrise Cottage Shelter of the Cross TBICO The Corporate Edge The Salvation Army Community Emergency Assistance SOUTHERN LITCHFIELD COUNTY American Red Cross Disaster Services, Services to the Military, Wheels Connecticut Legal Services Legal Aid Interlude New Milford Outreach Literacy Volunteers on the Green Literacy ESL Training STAMFORD American Red Cross Disaster Response CT Legal Services Legal Aid - Civil CTE Employment and Entrepreneurship Domestic Violence Crisis Center Counseling Domus Chester Addison Employment Specialist Family Centers Vocational Self Sufficiency Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County Food Bank International Institute of CT Aiding People in Crises Jewish Family Service Employment Readiness Education Center, Case Management Literacy Volunteers-Stamford/Greenwich ESOL & Basic Literacy Mutual Housing Association of SWCT Stamford Affordable Housing New Covenant House of Hospitality Soup Kitchen & Food Pantry New Neighborhoods New Housing Development, Housing Preservation, Supportive Housing Development Person-to-Person Emergency Assistance Shelter for the Homeless Night Program, Day Program, Transitional House Urban League of Southern CT Career Choice, Homebuyer Education & Counseling HOUSING OPPORTUNITIES For several years United Way has been addressing the severe lack of affordable housing in the region. We have invested funds and provided leadership in creating programs that help low and middle-income families access appropriate housing, both through rental and home ownership opportunities. In Stamford we are investing $15,000 towards a regional solution in lower Fairfield County through the Fairfield County Collaborative Fund for Affordable Housing to help address the growing need for affordable housing in our community. In addition, United Way participates in the Affordable Housing Action Collaborative, a voluntary group of housing developers, nonprofit leaders, community groups, shelter and supportive housing providers, faith organizations, and government agencies from Southwestern Connecticut. The Collaborative is dedicated to providing affordable housing for low-income residents through planning, coordination, and advocacy in the region and at the state and federal level. with the Danbury Housing Partnership as part of Danbury’s ten year plan to end homelessness. In Northern Fairfield County we empower individuals and families who are struggling financially by supporting a spectrum of services – from homeless prevention to home ownership. These services provide the tools they need to attain affordable housing, increase their income, and create savings for the future. UWWC funded Key Rings security deposit initiative for the 5th year. Since its beginning, 320 participants have obtained rental housing and used mandatory support services (such as financial education) to maintain their housing. New in 2007 were United Way’s efforts in funding and promoting Danbury’s Project Homeless Connect, where close to 70 people at risk or in the midst of homelessness found help in one place in one day. Additionally, we work The Housing Resource Center (operated by the Housing Development Fund- HDF) was funded to assist families in obtaining affordable first-time homes. 100 families have bought their own home since 2005. HDF and UWWC also partnered together to address some emerging critical needs. Symposiums were held on the practice of Inclusionary Zoning and on Predatory Lending. Additionally a regional foreclosure prevention program will be funded in 2008 in response to the national housing market crisis. UWWC has also continued to play a leadership role with the local Continuum of Care grants, and the Emergency Food and Shelter Boards in both Stamford and Northern Fairfield County to improve the lives of those most in need. In Southern Litchfield County, a close relationship with the social services department led to supporting two programs. The Hope for the Homeless Fund assists families in avoiding homelessness by providing rental assistance and security deposits. United Way also assisted in launching a culinary arts training program that provides vocational training for unemployed individuals. 3 EDUCATION United Way is committed to helping children, youth and their families achieve their potential. And we know that a quality education is the cornerstone to a better life. So we support a range of programs and initiatives that ensure families have the skills and resources needed for their children to succeed in school and life. Whether it is providing for quality early childhood education, supporting parent engagement, ensuring graduation or developing future leaders in our youth, United Way promises to work on solutions that create lasting change. United Way of Western Connecticut is investing over $1,240,000 into programs and initiatives that help create successful kids and strong families “I retired from IBM after 30 years, and have been donating to United Way through my workplace campaign for as long as I can remember. Most of the opportunities I have had as an adult are grounded in a good education. I believe everyone should have the same chance. United Way focuses on helping youth achieve their potential. That’s important to me. Today I volunteer with United Way, mentor engineering students online, and my husband and I are active alumni with our universities and high schools. That’s how I LIVE UNITED.” Sandy Rankin is a loyal contributor to United Way of Western Connecticut. 4 FUNDED PROGRAMS THAT HELP CHILDREN, YOUTH AND FAMILIES ACHIEVE THEIR POTENTIAL NORTHERN FAIRFIELD COUNTY Association of Religious Communities Domestic Violence Prevention System Boys & Girls Club of Ridgefield After School and Vacation Program CACD Action Early Learning Center Connecticut Institute for Communities Even Start Danbury Children First People Empowering People Danbury Regional Advocacy Center COPES Program, Parent Aide Program, Team Programs, Volunteer Mentor Program Danbury Youth Services Learning Advantage Families Network Fatherhood Initiative, Nurturing Families Network Family & Children’s Aid Harmony House, Starshine Home Girl Scouts of CT Strong Girls Strong Futures Green Chimneys Good Friend Harambee Center Hispanic Center Bilingual Education Coordinator Interfaith Social Action Corporation Interfaith Early Learning Center Regional YMCA Camp Greenknoll, Escape to the Arts/Teen Enrichment, Great Hollow Wilderness Camp, Nursery School Child Care, School Age Child Care The Ridgefield Playhouse Series for Women & Girls The Salvation Army The Right Place WeCAHR Advocacy for Children and Families Women’s Center of Greater Danbury Domestic Violence Services, Resource Services, Sexual Assault Services SOUTHERN LITCHFIELD COUNTY Boys Scouts of America Comprehensive Youth Development Danbury Regional Child Advocacy Center Copes, Child Protection Teams, Parent Aide Program Family & Children’s Aid Safe Home Girl Scouts of CT Comprehensive Youth Development The Kent Children’s Center Youth Programming WeCAHR Advocacy for Children & Families Women’s Center of Greater Danbury Domestic Violence Services, Resource Services, Sexual Assault Services STAMFORD Boys & Girls Club of Stamford After School Program Childcare Learning Centers Early Childhood and Education Program Domus Stamford Academy Family Advocates, Stamford Public Schools Family Advocates Family Centers Young Parents Program Girl Scouts of CT OutReach Program, Campership for Stamford Girls Jewish Community Center JumpStart Kids In Crisis Adolescent Emergency Services Urban League of Southern CT Financial Literacy for Youth Yerwood Center Yerwood Scholars, YES Camp, Community Outreach & Educational Program YMCA LEAD Academy, LEAD EARLY CHILDHOOD LEARNING Born Learning is a national public engagement campaign helping parents, caregivers and communities create early learning opportunities for young children. Resources such as public service advertising, the www.bornlearning.org website and a wealth of educational material provide caregivers easy, “doable” action steps to help young children learn. United Way has been working with child-focused groups and corporations throughout western Connecticut to make Born Learning materials available to caregivers. In Stamford, Pitney Bowes supports an enhanced Born Learning Campaign, a national initiative through United Way of America to help ensure people in Stamford get the most out of what Born Learning has to offer. Collaborative Efforts: United Way also works with the School Readiness Councils and Discovery Grant Communities in Danbury and Stamford. Helping the community address early childhood issues in a comprehensive and coordinated manner is an important role for UWWC. In Danbury UWWC has worked with the School Readiness Council’s community planning to get all children ready for school. This new plan is called The New Three Rs: Ready Children and Families, Ready Communities, Ready Schools. United Way helped secure funding for a community coordinator and continues to be engaged in the efforts to prepare children to enter the school system with the skills required to be successful. the needs of young people in our community and makes available a Request for Proposals (RFP) to area non-profits. This past year some of the key issues identified were a need for more after school activities for children, safe driving, and the effects of peer pressure and bullying. Grants of up to $1,000 are issued by the leadership team. Programs that received funding included an Open Gym program run by the Park and Recreation department and a Youth Forum sponsored by the local youth agency. Youth Leadership A desire to serve in the community and gain valuable leadership skills is what has motivated young people to apply to United Way’s Youth Leadership Program for over 13 years. Thirty high school students from Southern Litchfield County participate in the program each year. Annually, the youth leadership team researches During the year, youth leaders also serve as volunteers at a variety of community activities, such as the annual Back to School Clothing Drive, Food Drives, and Bike Day. Members of Youth Leadership Class of 2007 volunteer at the back-to-school clothing drive. 5 HEALTH Good Health is important for everyone. Illness can affect individuals and families not only physically, but emotionally and financially. We know there is a need to promote good health through prevention, and that there are those who need help when illness strikes. UWWC strives to make health care accessible and affordable in our communities. That’s why we support local programs that promote healthy lifestyles, provide counseling services, home health care, children’s health clinics and drug & alcohol rehabilitation services regardless of a person’s ability to pay. Healthy Community 2020 was established in Southern Litchfield County as a collaborative for health professionals and service providers. Its primary focus is on community fitness, child and adult obesity, and the availability of dental services for the uninsured. To address obesity in 2007, efforts included The Walking Project, a month long event where 17 fifth grade classes partnered with a community business to increase their daily exercise. The collaborative has also advocated for increased health services in the schools, for seniors and for low-income families. New Milford Community Action Network is a broad based coalition with a mission to encourage citizens to establish New Milford as a town that is healthy and drug free. Its primary focus is to reduce underage drinking, provide parent education, and increase safe youth driving skills. Pioneering Healthier Communities is a collaborative in Northern Fairfield County that brings leaders of the public and private sectors together to discuss and lead the community toward healthier living. This group has been focused on elementary school-aged children living a more physically active lifestyle while practicing sound nutritional habits. UWWC is a participating member of the collaborative that is led by the Regional YMCA and Danbury Hospital. 7 VOLUNTEER At United Way we consider our volunteers to be community builders. With United Way of Western Connecticut becoming more of a regional organization, it becomes even more important to have local volunteers who represent the individual communities we serve. United Way’s origins are rooted in volunteerism. Today’s United Way movement includes approximately 1,300 community-based United Way organizations. Because of the unique conditions in our diverse communities, the issues United Ways address are determined locally. United Way calls volunteers to be engaged in creating a shared vision and commitment to improving communities by focusing on the underlying causes of the most serious problems. It has existed for more than a century because it recognizes that its most important resource is people; those it serves and all who donate, volunteer and advocate to create long-term change in community conditions. United Way was founded by volunteers. It is sustained by volunteers. And it will continue to seize the power of volunteers to build a stronger community and improve lives. Volunteering is a way of life for Andy Zeitlin. As a husband and father of two active boys, he knows how important it is to be involved in the community. Whether it’s coaching his 10-year-old’s soccer team or leading his younger son’s Cub Scout Den, Andy finds time to make a difference. Andy balances a busy career as an attorney with helping others in his community. United Way of Western Connecticut is fortunate to have Andy serve on our regional board of directors, act as chairperson for our Stamford Community Council, and offer his assistance with our resource development committee. “Everyone can make a community a better place to live. Find what you are passionate about and do something. I choose to make a difference with my children, United Way, and my alumni association. That’s how I LIVE UNITED.” Andy Zeitlin, Shipman & Goodwin LLP 8 ADVOCATE Funded programs that Encourage community involvement Northern Fairfield County American Red Cross Volunteer Services, Retired and Senior Volunteer Program Danbury Children First Parent Leadership Training Institute HVCASA Local Prevention Framework-Capacity Bldg. Your money can be designated to a particular initiative, a specific focus issue such as early childhood care, or to your local community. • Needs are not one-dimensional. United Way funds a network of care to ensure that all the services needed in our community are available. Programs work together to help clients get back on their feet. United Way invests in programs that have the greatest impact and measure the results, assuring our donors that their gift is changing lives. LASTING IMPACT In 1998 a generous supporter donated shares of a privately held stock. When the company was sold in 2006, the stock became a multi-million dollar gift. This investment will empower United Way of Western Connecticut to take bold steps over the next ten years in preparing children for school and eradicating the achievement gap that currently exists between low income students and their more affluent peers. • Volunteer oversight assures that United Way agencies adhere to sound fiscal policies and provide quality services. “I give to United Way because they look into the future and anticipate where the needs will be in the community. There are many worthwhile charities that address specific problems. But I choose United Way because they have broad impact and work at lasting change. It’s important to be part of improving the education, health and income of people in my community. I get involved in a variety of community efforts; whether it’s building affordable housing, raising funds for cultural organizations or serving as a volunteer and pro bono consultant for local nonprofits, hospitals, and businesses. That’s how I LIVE UNITED.” John Patrick is President of Attitude LLC and former vice president of Internet Technology at IBM. He is the author of Net Attitude, and helps people see ways to do business differently. John is a member of United Way of Western Connecticut’s Alexis de Tocqueville Society. 10 2006/2007 DONORS On the following pages is a listing of leadership donors in 2006-2007 from the former United Ways of Stamford, Northern Fairfield County, and Housatonic/Shepaug.
