The newly elected Board will hold our annual Board Meeting on November 2, 2014 to discuss the calendar and upcoming activities for the club. We are a well-rounded club whose membership participates in all kinds of wide ranging doggy activities. It is our desire to offer more opportunities for members to participate in meetings & outside events. At our meeting please attend and jump in discussing old and new ideas. If you cannot attend meetings we want your input. Please email ideas, suggestions & opinions (pro & con) to Joan Summers, PCKC Secretary. Our local communities are offering year round opportunities for activities tailored to you and your dog(s). If you know of any fun things happening in your area let us know and we will get the word out. There seems to be doggy events almost every month, we will post what we know and try to get group participation in various events. OCTOBER, look for Halloween events for you and your dog. The keeshonden from puppies to Veterans were lovely. We had several Veterans and a number of Altered Companions involving many members and friends. A huge rain on Tuesday night had OKC, Onofrio, and the Enumclaw Expo Center scrambling to make the grassy areas usable. Thursday night we were grateful to be inside away from the rain. Some drizzle Friday morning kept us cool. Both socials were dry and well-attended—great fun. On Thursday night Fredrick Stephens, judge, talked with us about structure and his judging of our kees. At least, three new titles were earned over the four days, and one Grand Championship. We were lucky to have a High in Trial in obedience for the first time in many years (Linda Hall’s Artie), and a couple of keeshonden did well in rally obedience on the weekend. Gayle Garbush and her dogs did Barn Hunt on the weekend. GCH CH SKYLINE’S UNIT OF MEASURE owned by Jean Gauchat-Hargis, Josh Hargis, Susan Cullen, & Kristin Cullen, DVM. was Best of Breed all four days and earned two Group 2’s on the weekend. It was a fun weekend for keeshonden and people. Hope to see all of you again in 2015 I want to thank all who helped make these shows possible: All our keeshonden and their owners and handlers Terri Packard at Callisto Ribbons Those who placed catalog ads The members and friends who generously donated to the Trophy & Specialty funds Thursday Judge – Fredrick Stephens Sweepstakes Judge – Joan Zielinski Friday judge – Sharon Krogh Obedience Judge – D. Ann will also take suggestions of your dream judges to pass on to OKC for future consideration. These judges are scheduled at least two years in advance and must be qualified to judge 2 or more groups. This program doesn’t expect you to do anything different than what you normally do, all we are asking is that you become more alert and report anything out of the ordinary. By providing theses extra eyes and ears in the community you will be helping to make your local community even safer for yourself and everyone else, who lives, works or plays in Des Moines For more information on this program click on the following link ==> Dog Walker Watch Holiday Party - Saturday, December 13, 2014 The Award Presentations for the club and our annual Holiday party will be held Saturday, December 13, 2014. Page 7 RESCUE REPORT SueAnne Nelson The Bulletin of the Pacific Crest Keeshond Club October 2014 There has been some success & a missed opportunity. All four of the NY Rescue that went into foster homes in Washington State are in their forever homes. Three of these Kees have been adopted by their foster family. Traveler's foster family wanted to keep him but then a potential home contacted them about a puppy and Traveler came up in the conversation and both went to live in Granite Falls, WA. Lewis WA (aka Louie) is with Cathleen Powell and attending socialization classes. He is an active young guy and enjoys having playmates. Sochi is with Sue Riches and has been absorbed into Sue's four legged Keesy Kids. Sherman is with Linda & Jerry Hall and is attending obedience classes and lots of play dates at Camp Fuzzy Butt (Joan & Gary Summer's home). KAI - female Kees - owner turn-in to the Wenatchee Humane Society. She was adopted out but returned to the shelter within a week. She thought Kai was a bit mouthy with her young kids. Kathy Gray had been in contact with the Shelter and learned of her return and her daughter was going to do a 12 hour round trip drive to pick her up. I am a couple of hours from Wenatchee so made the trip instead. Pat Shuler offered to foster her. This was perfect as Pat was our rescue rep for 10 years and knows how to evaluate all aspects of a foster Kees. I had lots of people contact me interested in Kai. Shannon Kelly contacted me about one a family she knew very well and were looking for a Kees companion for their widowed father. Pat & I drove Kai to meet the entire family including their young male Kees, Enzio and family cat. All did well. They contacted me back and said Dad really wanted Kai and was excited to have her as his constant companion. Got Kai's bloodwork done, everything normal. Was able to contact the vet that spayed her a year before and learned she was current on her rabies and was also 18 months older than the info that was given to the Wenatchee shelter. Her new dad, Howard was fine with that so off we went to Enumclaw to her new home. She is doing great. Howard and Kai go for daily walks, she has a lovely fenced shady yard to protect and both are pleased as punch with each other. MISSED OPPORTUNITY: Young unneutered Kees posted on Craig's List. I spoke to the owner who wanted to place the dog himself. I couldn't convince him that I had a list of approved homes waiting that I could give to him if only he would meet me so I could evaluate his dog and talk about any concerns he would have putting his Kees under PCKC's protection. His dog would stay with him and he would meet each interested family. The choice of family would be his. He did not call be back and placed the dog. A week later there was a post by the person he placed the Kees with trying to 'FLIP' the dog. I was never able to contact this person. When a Kees is posted on-line in our state or a border state, I am notified by numerous rescue groups all over the U.S. who are automatically notified of these postings. This is such a help as it ensures that if one of us local rescue folk is not available, we know that another faithful rescuer will step up. Thank you to everyone who makes all of our rescue efforts effective. Page 8 The Bulletin of the Pacific Crest Keeshond Club Keeshond Rescue Poem – Author, Unknown I used to be a lonely Keeshond just looking for a home. I simply had no place to go, no one to call my own. I wandered through the streets and fields, in rain in heat and snow. I ate whatever I could find. I was always on the go. My skin would itch, my feet were sore my body ached with pain. No one stopped to give a pat or to gently say my name. I never saw a loving glance I was always on the run. For people though that hurting me was really lots of fun. Then one day I hear a voice so gentle, kind and sweet. Arms so soft and gentle reached down to me and took me off my feet. “No one again will hurt you” was whispered in my ear. You’ll have a home to call your own where you will know no fear. You will be dry, you will be warm, and you’ll have enough to eat And rest assured that when you sleep, your dreams will all be sweet. I was afraid I must admit. I’ve lived so long in fear. I can’t remember when I let a human come so near. She tended to my wounds and cleaned and brushed my fur. She told me about a rescue group and what it meant to her. She said “We are a circle, a line that never ends”. In the center there is you protected by new friends. All around you are the ones who’ll keep you safe and sound. Who will share their loving home with you until a forever one can be found. We will do all we can by searching near and far to find the perfect home for you where you can be a star. She said “There is a family that’s waiting patiently”. Pretty soon we’ll find them, just you wait and see. They will join our circle, and help to make it grow. There will be room for more like you, who have no place to go. I waited very patiently. The days came and went. Today’s the day I would hope my family will be sent. Just when I began to think it wasn’t meant to be, there were my people standing there gazing down at me. I knew them in a heartbeat. I could tell they felt it too. They said “We have been searching for a special Keeshond just like you”. Now every night I say a prayer to all to gods that be. Thank you for the life I live and all you‘ve given me. But most of all protect the Keeshonden in the shelters and on the street. Please send a Keeshond rescue person to lift them off their feet.
