Keeshond Club of America Secretary’s Page Vol. 1, Spring 2009 President’s Message Our KCA Communication is one of the major challenges faced by any national organization. The simple fact of geography makes face to face meetings expensive and infrequent.. Our annual national specialty brings together only 20 to 30 percent of our membership each year. We publish newsletters and reports but they too have their limitations. One thing we can do is try to use the internet and its tools to our advantage. Since 80% of our members are on line the internet is a great way to keep in touch with each other. This tool, along with our Secretary’s Report that is published three times a year, makes it possible to stay in touch with everyone. The written word is a one way device, unless you write back or send an email, others cannot know what you think. I would like to encourage all of you to take advantage of mail and email to keep in touch with your KCA Board of Directors and Committee members. We welcome your thoughts and your comments. We also hope you like the revised format of the Secretary’s Report; our new Corresponding Secretary, Judi James, has streamlined it to encourage everyone to read it. We hope to move this publication in the direction of a newsletter so look for details about this in the coming months. A first goal that I would like each member of KCA to try is to eliminate the use of “they”. As in they decided or they won’t, or they think. As Pogo once said, “I have met the enemy and he is us!” In reality, in KCA there is no ‘they’. The board of directors and the committees are working for the members of KCA. It is our organization and it can only be as effective for our breed as we want it to be. We all have the same goals: • • To have a happy, healthy Keeshonden, To broadcast the news about the Keeshond as a wonderful family companion. I know that changing “they” to ‘us’ will take some time and effort. But, here we are, and if we work together we can meet this challenge. With a little practice, and by working together, we can remind each other that our national club is “Our KCA”. Deborah A. Lynch, [email protected] Page 3 of 9 Upcoming Specialties Your Board has approved the following specialty shows, but AKC approval may be pending. Keeshond Club of America Secretary’s Page Vol. 1, Spring 2009 AKC Delegate Report Highlights The Keeshond Club of America is a member of the American Kennel Club. Each member club appoints a delegate to represent its interests at periodic AKC business meetings. KCA is represented by John Sawicki. John provides your board with a summary from each Delegate meeting. Here are some highlights from his March report. From the parent club committee: • The AKC 125th anniversary show is this December in Long Beach. AKC hopes each parent club will designate the breed classes as a specialty. • AKC is offering $20 in coupons to the AKC Online Store to each person entered in a National Specialty. Host club will need to collect names and email addresses that AKC will use to send the coupons. • Canine Health Foundation is considering changes to the Donor Advisory Fund to be consistent with IRS regulations. Sec’y note: KCA has asked for more specifics on how the changes will impact the Keeshond Donor Advised Fund. From the Delegates Caucus: • The Futures Program making its way around the ‘Net is a non-issue. There is no proposal, no motion, no facts, to consider or planned for consideration. Sec’y note: Your board did direct John to oppose this topic if it came up for discussion. • The AKC Board of Directors class of 2013 were elected. They are: Alan Kalter, Carl Ashby, Lee Arnold, Robert G. Smith. The complete minutes of the delegates meeting and AKC’s annual report are posted on AKC’s website under ‘board of directors’ tab in the left sidebar. www.akc.org ✯✯✯ In Memoriam KCA recognized the recent death of member Patricia Tocalis (Cinderlad) with a contribution to the AKC Canine Health Fund, Keeshond Donor Advised Fund. Page 4 of 9 Your Help is needed! The 75th Anniversary Show YOUR ROLE In this Special Event May 25-29th – Oconomowoc, WI The Keeshond Club of America will celebrate it’s 75th anniversary in 2010. That is only one year from now! We would like to invite all of our member clubs to participate by helping with the show. There are still roles for everyone to share and how exciting to be a part of this unique celebration. If your club has not yet volunteered for a committee or task give Co-chairs Holly Wisner or Mary Ellen Meyer a call to discuss show preparations. Our 50th anniversary show was a truly special and memorable occasion. With your help, our 75th anniversary can be just as spectacular. Member Clubs, we need your participation as to make this show extra special. Please designate someone as your 75th Anniversary show liaison and call the chairs for how your club can participate. KCA Members We need your help, too. Take a few minutes to call the chairs and see how you can give back to your club. KCA 75th Anniversary Book The Anniversary Book is moving closer to publication just in time for our 75th Anniversary Celebration. Thank you for all the information already submitted to our Project Champion Mae Evans. We now have lots of great information to choose from as the book nears completion. Now for the fun part Which dogs in our past should be pictured in this memory book? If your dog earned an ROM, ROMX, HOF, or other award from KCA, won a specialty show, all breed best in show, major performance awards, and group wins, they probably already have a space reserved for them. But there is still room for other great dogs you believe should be remembered. More information will be coming out at the National on how you can purchase space to expand the illustrations of our Breed. ✯✯✯ AKC Lifetime Achievement Awards Mary Ellen Meyer, chair 15831 Roselawn Rd, Valders Wi 54245 (920) 775-4632 or (920) 901-1651 E-mail: [email protected] Each year AKC asks its member clubs to nominate exceptional individuals in the facey in the areas of Conformation, Companion Events and Performance for recognition in the AKC Lifetime Achievement Award program.
