In this dangerous situation, the Electronic
Rescue and Locating System ENOS® offers life
saving help: it is the first GPS-satellite based
rescue system for divers and supports the search
at the surface for missing people.
Special features: the system operates on its own,
independent of coastguards and international
Maritime Rescue Coordination Centres (MRCC).
The alert goes directly to the base station aboard
the dive boat making a speedy rescue operation
possible even in the most remote areas.
ENOS® is easily and quickly installed on any
boat.
“ENOS®” stands for its German product description “elektronisches Notruf- und Ortungssystem” which means “electronic alert and locating system”.

Den ENOS®-Empfänger gibt es als Festeinbau
für den Steuerstand und portabel, in einem
spritzwassergeschützten Koffer, für mobile Anwendungen.
Spezielle externe GPS- und Funkempfangsantennen lassen sich schnell an den tragbaren Empfänger anschließen, um beim mobilen
Einsatz gleich hohe Empfangsreichweiten zu
erzielen, wie beim fest eingebauten Empfänger.
The ENOS®-System consists of two units and
both are GPS supported:

the ENOS®-Receiver aboard the dive boat
2.
the ENOS®-Transmitters carried by the
divers during the dive.
ENOS®-Receiver
The ENOS®-Receiver is available as a permanent
installation on the command bridge or in a portable splash/waterproof case for easy transport.
Special external GPS and radio frequency
antennas can be quickly connected to the portable receiver to increase its receiving range and accuracy making it comparable to the
bridge mounted ENOS®-Receiver.

ENOS®-Sender
Der ENOS®-Sender kann auf verschiedene Weise bequem an der Tauchausrüstung befestigt
werden ohne zu behindern. Er hat leichten
Auftrieb, keinen Einfluss auf die Tarierung und
schwimmt an der Wasseroberfläche.
Die Antennen des Senders befinden sich gut
geschützt im Inneren des Gehäuses, das wahlweise druckdicht bis 100 Meter oder bis 200
Meter Wassertiefe erhältlich ist.
Der Schalter des ENOS®-Senders ist leicht zu
bedienen, auch mit dicken Handschuhen. Nach
dem Einschalten zeigt seine asymmetrische
Stellung deutlich „EIN“, um ein versehentliches
Ausschalten, z. B. durch Stress, zu verhindern.
Danach braucht man ihn nur noch aufrecht über
die Wasseroberfläche zu halten, um die Funkübertragung der GPS-Daten vom Sender an den
ENOS®-Empfänger zu ermöglichen.
ENOS®-Transmitter
There are several ways to attach the ENOS®Transmitter to the diving equipment.
Its positive buoyancy has no impact on the diver
and the transmitter floats on the surface in case
of mishandling.
The antennas of the transmitter are protected
inside the housing. It is pressure proof up to 100
Metres/330 Feet or there is a deep diving unit
available to 200 Metres/660 Feet.
The switch on the ENOS®-Transmitter is easy to
handle even when wearing heavy gloves.
When activating the transmitter, its asymmetrical position clearly signals “ON”.
This ensures proper activation in rough or
stressful conditions.
Holding the ENOS®-Transmitter above the
surface provides transmission of the GPS data
from the transmitter to the ENOS®-Receiver
aboard the dive boat.

Funktionsprinzip
Principle Of Function
ENOS® ist weltweit das einzige lokale Rettungssystem für den
Tauchsport, das die GPS-Positionen der Personen in Not direkt an die
Basisstation sendet. Es kombiniert GPS und Funk und ist unabhängig
von externer Unterstützung (z.B. Küstenwachen und Maritime Rescue
Coordination Centres, MRCC). Damit sind auch an abgelegenen Riffen
sofortige Rettungsaktionen vom Tauchschiff aus möglich.
Worldwide, ENOS® is the one and only local rescue system for scuba
diving which relays the GPS positions of the persons in need directly
to the main station. It combines the technologies of GPS and radio and
is independent from external support (i.e. coast guards and Maritime
Rescue Coordination Centres, MRCC). Even in remote areas, speedy
rescue operations are possible managed by one‘s own authority.

1. The ENOS®-Receiver is on board the dive boat and has determined
its GPS position (A) after switching on. It is now ready to receive and
evaluate emergency calls from the ENOS®-Transmitters.
2. Die ENOS®-Sender werden von den Tauchern
während des Tauchgangs mitgeführt. Sie werden nur im Notfall eingeschaltet, z.B. wenn die
Taucher zu weit vom Schiff entfernt auftauchen.
Direkt nach dem Einschalten an der Wasseroberfläche, sendet der ENOS®-Sender einen ersten
Alarm an den ENOS®-Empfänger auf dem Schiff.
Ein Hochfrequenzton und ein rotes Fenster auf
dem Bildschirm informieren die Crew, dass jemand an der Wasseroberfläche Hilfe benötigt.
Befinden sich die Taucher noch in Sichtweite,
kann die Hilfe sofort eingeleitet werden!
Unmittelbar nach Senden des ersten Alarms beginnt der ENOS®-Sender damit, seine GPS-Position (B) von den GPS-Satelliten zu ermitteln.
2. The ENOS®-Transmitters are carried by the divers during the dive. They are activated only in
case of need at the surface, e.g. if divers surface
too far away from the boat.
Once the ENOS®-Transmitter is switched on at
the surface, it immediately relays the first alert
to the ENOS®-Receiver aboard the dive boat.
A high frequency signal is audible and a red
window on the screen informs the crew that
divers are in need of rescue. If the diver(s) is visible, then the rescue operation can be promptly
initiated!
Now the ENOS®-Transmitter begins to determine
its GPS position (B) through the GPS satellites.
3. Sobald der ENOS®-Sender seine Position (B)
bestimmt hat, sendet er die automatisch per Funk (f) direkt an den
ENOS®-Empfänger an Bord des Tauchschiffs. Diese Übertragung erfolgt
alle 30 - 40 Sekunden, damit die Crew eine ständige Aktualisierung über
die Positionen der treibenden Taucher bekommt. Die Funkfrequenz, die
das ENOS®-System verwendet, ist weltweit lizenz- und gebührenfrei!
Es fallen keine weiteren Kosten an!
3. After the ENOS®-Transmitter has determined
its GPS position (B), it immediately relays it via radio frequency (f)
directly to the boat. This transmission occurs every 30 - 40 seconds to
give a permanent update to the crew about the positions of the persons
in need. The radio frequency which the ENOS®-System uses is license
free and free of charge worldwide! This means no additional costs!
Aus den Positionen (A) und (B) errechnet der ENOS®-Empfänger die
Distanz und die Richtung zu den in Not geratenen Tauchern. Das wird
mit einer leicht verständlichen Grafik auf dem Bildschirm des ENOS®Empfängers angezeigt.
Using the positions (A) and (B) the ENOS®-Receiver then determines
the exact distance and the relative bearing from the boat to the
missing divers. This data is displayed clearly and simply on the ENOS®Receiver screen.
Ohne Zeitverlust erhält die Crew in nur wenigen Minuten
die präzisen GPS Positionen der treibenden Taucher!
Within a few minutes and without losing time the crew
receives the precise GPS positions of the drifting divers!

Easy To Understand Display
Die Anzeige des ENOS®-Empfängers ist leicht zu verstehen, damit
Rettungsaktionen nicht durch zusätzlichen Stress belastet werden.
The display screen of the ENOS®-System is easy to understand to avoid
further stress during rescue operations.
Das Kreuz in der Mitte des Kreises stellt die Position des Schiffes dar. Der
Pfeil am oberen Rand des Kreises zeigt in Fahrtrichtung.
The cross in the centre of the circle represents the position of the boat.
The arrow on the top of the circle shows the boat‘s heading.
Die Ziffern 1 und 2 innerhalb des Kreises zeigen die exakten Positionen der
treibenden Taucher in Relation zum Boot.
The numbers 1 and 2 within the circle are the precise positions of the
drifting divers in relation to the boat.
Die rechts neben dem Kreis stehende Tabelle gibt je nach Einstellung:
- die Anzahl der empfangenen Notrufe (NR)
- die Zeit, die vergangen ist, seit der Notruf empfangen wurde (TIME)
- genaue Informationen über Distanz (DIS) und Richtung (BRG)
vom Schiff zu den Tauchern
The figures to the right of the circle give detailed information about:
- the number of distress calls received (NR)
- the time elapsed since first call (TIME)
- the distance (DIS) and relative bearing (BRG) from the boat
to the divers

Der Radius des Kreises stellt sich immer automatisch auf den am
weitesten entfernten Notruf ein. Je nach Höhe der Funkempfangsantenne sind mit dem ENOS®-System Reichweiten über 10 Kilometern möglich
(ca. 5,6 Nautische Meilen).
The radius of the circle adjusts itself automatially according to the
emergency call farthest away. Depending on the height of the radio
receiving antenna, ENOS®-System‘s receiving range is possible more than
10 Kilometres / approx. 5.6. Nautical Miles.
Rechts oben werden auf dem Bildschirm Datum, Uhrzeit und die Schiffsdaten angezeigt.
Die grünen Balken darunter geben die Anzahl der empfangenen GPS
Satelliten wieder: pro Satellit ein Balken.
Displayed in the top right corner box is the date, the local time, and data of
the boat‘s position, speed (SOG) and course over ground (COG).
Broken green bars show the number of GPS satellite signals received: each
satellite = one bar.

Bildschirm anzuzeigen. Das gilt auch, wenn die Signale aus verschiedenen

If multiple divers are in need and all activate their ENOS®-Transmitters
simultaneously, the ENOS®-Receiver is able to evaluate and display
all alerts relayed in its receiving range even when the signals are
transmitted from different positions.

is fixed on board and connected to the ENOS®Receiver which is permanently installed on the
command bridge.
It‘s also possible to connect the GPS antenna to
the portable ENOS®-Receiver, model ERX +, for
inside cabin use.

Die externe Funkempfangsantenne ist bei einem
Festeinbau im Steuerstand erforderlich und wird mit
einem Antennenfuß oder einem Montagewinkel an
der höchsten Stelle des Schiffes montiert.

The external radio antenna is necessary for the
permanently installed ENOS®-Receiver and is mounted on deck with a base or attached vertically with
an assembly bracket.
The antenna is connected to the receiver with a
cable.
Die externe Funkempfangsantenne kann aber auch
an den portablen ENOS®-Empfänger angeschlossen
werden, um seine Reichweite zu erhöhen.
It‘s also possible to connect the external
radio antenna to the portable ENOS®-Receiver to
increase its transmission range.
6. Batterieset für den ENOS®-Sender
Batterieset für den ENOS®-Sender mit Inbusschlüssel zum Öffnen des Sendergehäuses und O-Ring.
Der ENOS®-Sender enthält 4 Batterien, Größe AA,
die überall auf der Welt erhältlich sind.
Werkseitig sind die Sender mit Lithiumbatterien
(3.000 mAh) bestückt, die Laufzeiten von bis zu
15 Stunden erreichen. Werden keine Lithiumbatterien verwendet, beträgt die Laufzeit bis zu 6 Stunden. Den Batteriewechsel kann der Kunde sehr leicht
selber vornehmen.
Eine Rücksendung zum Hersteller für einen
Batteriewechsel ist nicht erforderlich!
6. Battery-Kit For The ENOS®-Transmitter
Battery-kit for the ENOS®-Transmitter with allen key
to open the housing and O-ring.
The ENOS®-Transmitter is powered by 4 batteries,
Size “AA”, which are available all over the world.
Factory-made, they are delivered with Lithium
batteries (3000 mAh) which last about 15 hours.
If Lithium batteries are not used, the run time
is approx. 6 hours.
The change of batteries can be handled easily by the
customer.
No return to manufacturer required, due to
battery change!

„... Zunächst war ich mir meiner Situation gar
nicht bewusst, denn ich fühlte mich gut. Meine
Boje war gesetzt, das Gesicht durch die Maske
geschützt und ich atmete über den Lungenautomaten aus der vollen Flasche. Weder Wind
noch Wellen machten mir etwas aus, denn ich
konnte mir nicht vorstellen, dass man mich
nicht sieht. Geduldig wartete ich an der Wasseroberfläche, während ich immer weiter weg
trieb, bis das große Schiff schon sehr klein war!
“... At first, I was not aware of my situation,
because I felt quite good. My sausage and my
BCD were inflated, my face was protected by
the mask and I breathed from my regulator
which was fixed to a full tank. Neither waves
nor wind made me anxious because I couldn‘t
believe that I would not be visible. Patiently
I waited at the surface and drifted away and
away until the huge boat had become very
small!
Da begriff ich, dass der Schlauchbootfahrer mich
wegen der hohen Wellen nicht sehen konnte,
obwohl er sorgfältig die Wasseroberflähe beobachtete und ich schaltete den ENOS®-Sender
ein, den jeder Taucher an Bord bekommt.
Rasch stellte ich fest, dass das Einschalten und
Hochhalten des ENOS®-Senders viel einfacher
und bequemer ist, als eine Boje in der Dünung
aufrecht zu halten.
Finally I realised that the driver of the dive
tender couldn‘t see me because of the waves
although he was watching the surface carefully. I decided to activate the ENOS®-Transmitter
which every diver has to carry during the dive.
Fortunately! I found that activating and holding
up the ENOS®-Transmitter is much easier and
more comfortable than keeping up the sausage
in the swell.
Und schon kurze Zeit später kam das Schlauchboot!
And just a few minutes later the inflatable
boat arrived.
Wieder an Bord, zeigte mir die Crew den
ENOS®-Empfänger, auf dem meine Position
genau angegeben war:
Ich war 824 Meter / 0,458 Nautische Meilen weit
weg getrieben, in einer Richtung von 297° vom
Schiff. Deswegen konnte mich das Schlauchboot, trotz der hohen Dünung, die draußen
immer höher wurde, so gezielt anfahren!
Back on board the crew showed me the screen
of the ENOS®-Receiver where my position in
the open water was precisely indicated:
824 meters, 0,458 Nautical Miles distance in
a bearing of 297° relative to the boat – that’s
why the life tender was able to target me
exactly although the waves had become higher
and higher!

For me it is absolutely clear that I wouldn‘t
have been rescued in that short time without
ENOS®, because nobody would have missed
me, that is not until the return of my dive buddies. These guys arrived at the boat 25 minutes later – and I rather wonder if I would have
been found in this time, as I would have been
swept away even more! ...”

„... Einige Crewmitglieder standen an der Reling und spähten zum Horizont. Seit Beginn
des Tauchgangs waren inzwischen 1,5 Stunden vergangen, und immer noch fehlten zwei.
Nun suchten 20 Menschen die Wasseroberfläche rundum ab, die meisten mit blossem Auge,
einige mit Ferngläsern.
„War da nicht ein Kopf?“ Nein, die nächste
sanfte Welle nahm den Punkt wieder weg.
„Müssten die nicht ihre Bojen aufgeblasen haben? Dahinten vielleicht?“ Nein, Reflexionen
auf der Wasseroberfläche und der Wunsch die
beiden endlich zu finden, täuschten uns nur
was vor, tatsächlich zu sehen war aber nichts.
Lange Minuten.
Dann rannte einer der Crew zum Guide und
rief: „We have an ENOS® signal!“
“... Some of the crew stood at the guardrail
and peered at the horizon. Since the beginning
of the dive approx. 1.5 hours were gone and
two divers were still not on board.
Now 20 people observed the surface in all
directions, some with their naked eyes only,
some with binoculars.
“Wasn’t there something, the head of a diver?“
No, the next soft wave removed this tiny point.
“Shouldn’t they have inflated their buoys?
Maybe there?“ No, reflections on the surface,
movements of the waves and the wishes to
find something misled all sorts of things, but in
reality there was nothing to see.
Long minutes.
Then a crewmember ran to the instructor and
called: “We have an ENOS® signal!”
Sofort wurde ein Schlauchboot klar gemacht
und drei Crewmitglieder stiegen ein, zwei mit
Notfallausrüstung, einer mit dem portablen
ENOS®-Empfänger, der die Richtung zu den
draußen treibenden Tauchern anzeigte. Mit
hoher Geschwindigkeit fuhr das Boot in einer
geraden Linie davon, verfolgt von unseren
Blicken. nach knapp 3 Kilometern / 1,7 NM,
stoppte es.
Was ich bis heute in eindringlicher Erinnerung
habe, ist die Tatsache, dass auf diese Distanz,
die vom Schiff aus gar nicht so weit entfernt
scheint, das große Schlauchboot mit den drei
darin aufrecht stehenden Männern, nicht mehr
als ein Stecknadelkopf war. Hätte ich nicht gewusst, dass genau dort das Boot war, hätte ich
es nicht gesehen.
Das Schlauchboot kehrte zurück, die Anspannung löste sich. Ich wandte mich meinem Buddy zu und sagte: „3 Kilometer! Ich hätte nicht
gedacht, dass das so schnell geht.“ Er nickte.
Die ENOS®-Sender in unseren Taschen waren
immer noch die gleichen, unser Gefühl zu
ihnen aber ein ganz Anderes! ...“
Immediately a life tender was prepared,
three crew members got in to it, two with
rescue equipment, one with a portable ENOS®Receiver which indicated the direction to the
driver. In high speed the inflatable boat drove
away in a straight line, followed by our gazes.
Then after 1.7 Nautical Miles, as indicated
later, the boat stopped.
The thing that stands out most in my memory
is the fact, that the life tender with the three
upright standing men, which was not so far
from the point of view of the big boat, was not
more than a pinhead. If I hadn‘t known exactly
where the inflatable boat was I wouldn’t have
seen them.
The life tender came back and everyone
relaxed. I turned to my buddy and said:
“3 Kilometres / 1.7 NM! I never expected this
to happen so fast!” He nodded and reckoned,
“Me either!“ The ENOS®-Transmitters in the
pockets of our BCDs were still the same but
our feeling toward them were completely
different! ...”

Schnell stellte sich heraus, dass ENOS® für
viele Kunden ein Hauptgrund war, dieses
Schiff zu buchen.
Gleichzeitig haben die Crew und ich das
System als große Bereicherung für unsere
Arbeit an Bord geschätzt. Nicht nur wegen
seiner leicht verständlichen Handhabung,
sondern auch, weil der Ablauf aller Safaris
immer vom ENOS®-System profitiert hat:
“... I worked for more than ten years as
an instructor on Liveaboards. Amongst
others, I worked on a boat that was equipped with the ENOS®-System.
Very quickly, the ENOS® became one of the
main reasons for clients to book this boat.
Also, the crew and I treasured this system
as an improvement in safety, not only because of its easy handling which the whole
crew from the captain to the drivers of the

nach den Mahlzeiten!
• Nie ist ein Tauchgang ausgefallen, weil
wir nach vermissten Tauchern lange
suchen mussten!
• In cases of emergency when divers
were swept away and drifting on the
surface, we didn‘t had to launch a
search because the crew always immediately knew where they were!
• Therefore, search operations lasting for
hours where guests and crew are under
great stress watching the surface were
eliminated!
• We never had to change the course of
events because of long lasting rescue
operations!
• All surface intervals could be held as
planned; the intervals between the dives as well as after the meals!
• We never missed a dive because of
search and rescue operations for missing divers!
