After the consumption of the finest herbs and grasses our cows produce the most delicious and healthy milk which is taken to the valley the very same day or gets fetched
directly from the site by the milk tank trucks of the TIROL Milch dairy. In Hopfgarten
and Kelchsau alone about 7.850.000 litres of finest milk are produced every year.
At the alpine dairy farms Niederkaser and Holzalm the milk is directly processed into
various cheese specialities which are offered for sale. A visit there is definitely worth
it – for a short glance behind the scenes of cheese making and, of course, for the
pleasure of savouring fresh, regional delicacies.

Of course our alpine pasture areas are also rewarding destinations for hiking enthusiasts. Make sure however to stay on the marked trails and avoid the pastures of the
animals. Mother cows can be very protective of their calves and can ward off “intruders” rather aggressively, so please keep a safe distance! If you walk with a dog be
sure that your friend is on a lead. In case the cattle turn aggressive, let the dog off the
lead so it can escape safely on its own and you are no longer exposed to unnecessary
danger.

In particular, Hopfgarten and Kelchsau offer wide alpine pasture areas with lush, green
meadows. 46 % (77 km2) of the total municipal area of Hopfgarten (166 km2) is used
for transhumance exclusively, most of all areas are situated between 900 m and 2.400
m above sea level. More or less 3.900 animals of which 3.500 are cattle graze the
alpine pastures of Hopfgarten and Kelchsau every year. About 110 herders spend their
summers on the 62 alpine dairy farms in the picturesque alpine world, high above and
far away from the hustle and bustle of village life.

Spend the day the way you like – we recommend a cable car ride on top of the Hohe
Salve (1.829m), Tyrol’s most beautiful panoramic mountain. Enjoy the unique view of

Kitzbühel Alps or visit Austria’s highest situated pilgrimage church.

This is the day when hundreds of beautifully adorned cows walk through
Hopfgarten and are duly welcomed on their homeward journey. The music starts
at 11 a.m. and typical, traditional Tyrolean delicacies as well as fine Schnapps
specialities will be on offer. At the farmers’ market you can stock up with natural
regional products and craftsmen, who have maintained their traditional working
methods, are on hand to impart their knowledge.

EINES DER SCHÖNSTEN ALMGEBIETE TIROLS
Die Ferienregion Hohe Salve ist nicht nur für ihre zahlreichen Gäste, sondern auch für
das Weidevieh auf den vielen Almen ein wahres Idyll. Der Tiroler Almsommer ist mit
viel Tradition, Brauchtum und Leidenschaft verbunden und geprägt vom Einklang von
Mensch, Tier und Natur.
Vor allem Hopfgarten und die Kelchsau bieten ein weitläufiges Almgebiet und gesunde,
saftige Almwiesen für die Tiere. 46 % (77 km2) der gesamten Gemeindefläche der
Marktgemeinde Hopfgarten (166 km2) werden rein für die Almwirtschaft genutzt, meist
Gebiete in Höhenlagen zwischen 900m bis 2.400m. Auf den Hopfgartner und Kelchsauer Almen weiden ca. 3.900 Tiere, davon sind ca. 3.500 Rinder. Rund 110 ‚Hirten‘ auf
etwa 62 bewirtschafteten Almen verbringen ihren Sommer abseits vom Dorfleben oben
in der malerischen Bergwelt.
Unsere Kühe produzieren nach dem Verzehr bester ‚Almgraserl‘ leckere, gesunde Milch,
welche anschließend ins Tal gebracht oder direkt von der TIROL Milch auf der Alm
abgeholt wird. Allein in Hopfgarten und der Kelchsau werden jährlich ca. 7.850.000 Liter
reinste Milch erzeugt. Auf der Niederkaser-Alm und der Holzalm wird die Milch sogar
direkt zu diversen Käsespezialitäten verarbeitet und zum Verkauf angeboten. Ein Besuch
lohnt sich – für einen Blick hinter die Kulissen der Käseproduktion und natürlich auch
zum Genuss von frischen, regionalen Köstlichkeiten.
Als Wanderer unterwegs im Almgebiet…
Unsere Almen sind natürlich auch für den Wanderer ein tolles Ziel oder Zwischenstopp.
Dabei sollte man die markierten Wanderwege benutzen und die Weiden der Tiere eher
meiden. Speziell Mutterkühe schützen ihre Jungtiere und wehren ‚Eindringlinge‘ ab,
daher empfiehlt sich, genügend Abstand zu halten. Besondere Vorsicht ist bei Mitnahme
von Hunden geboten. Hunde müssen stets an der Leine geführt werden. Sollte das
Weidevieh aggressiv reagieren, den Hund am besten von der Leine lassen, damit er
eigenständig flüchten kann und der Besitzer nicht unnötiger Gefahr ausgesetzt wird.

Hunderte geschmückte Rinder marschieren an diesem Tag durch Hopfgarten und

Musik auf, es werden typisch, traditionelle Tiroler Schmankerl und Edel-Schnäpse serviert. Beim Bauernmarkt kann man sich mit naturbelassenen Produkten
aus der Region eindecken. Handwerker, die ihre traditionelle Arbeitsweise
bewahren, stehen gerne bereit um ihr Wissen weiterzugeben.
