Jan Kaps is pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition “I Worn My Elbows” with new
works by the Scottish artist Keith Allan.
Keith Allan’s work encompasses sculpture, drawing and installation and deals with issues
relating to industry, trade and urban development, which he sees as being integral
components within the production of contemporary culture. By appropriating architectural
details, fragments and elements of industrial buildings, Allan thus underscores his particular
interest in these issues and their significance for his work in general.
Through his specific treatment and processing of discarded and found materials, such as steel
shelving systems and scaffoldings, references to their original use are emphasized and, at the
same time, become invisible. The original surfaces are reworked in terms of both form and
coloring. Shelving is transformed into wall objects or is given new meaning with the context of
minimal sculptures. These objects are reworked with industrial lacquers, paint strippers and
waxes. Layers of original lacquer on the material’s surface are removed and new lacquer
applied, whereby parts of the surface are left in their original state. The basic concept behind
this stripping down and adding on is an expression of Allan’s own particular approach to
classical sculpture. At the same time, this process also serves to release these objects from
their original history and function. Logical relationships between the objects are established
and a new logic emerges, which oscillates between functionality and re-contextualization.
Keith Allan was born in Darvel, Scotland in 1986 and studied at the Glasgow School of Art
from 2004 to 2008, graduating with a Bachelor Degree in Fine Art Sculpture and
Environmental Art.

Jan Kaps freut sich, die Eröffnung der Ausstellung „I Worn My Elbows“ mit neuen Arbeiten von
Keith Allan anzukündigen.
Keith Allans Oeuvre bestehend aus Skulptur, Zeichnung und Installation, zielt auf die
Auseinandersetzung mit Industrie, Handel und Städtebauentwicklung und sieht diese als ein
Bestandteil der Produktion von zeitgenössischer Kultur. Durch die Benutzung von
architektonischen Details, Fragmenten und Elementen aus Industriegebäuden, untermauert
Allan so das einzelne Interesse an jenen Objekten und den Fokus für sein Schaffen.
Durch die Behandlung und Weiterentwicklung, gefundener und ausrangierter Materialien, wie
stählernen Regalsystemen und Baugerüsten werden Bezüge zum Urprung deutlich und geraten
im selben Moment in den Hintergrund. Die ursprünglichen Oberflächen werden in ihrer
gegebenen Form und Farbgebung neu geordnet. Regalböden fügen sich zu Wandobjekten
oder finden einen neuen Kontext in minimal gehaltenen Skulpturen. Bearbeitet werden diese
Objekte mit industriellen Lacken, Lackentfernern und Waxen. Original Lacke auf den
Trägermaterialien werden entfernt, als auch neue Lackfarbe hinzugefügt, partiell wird
Oberfläche in ihrer Ursprünglichkeit belassen. Der Grundgedanke der Bearbeitung, dem
addieren und subtrahieren von Lacken, lässt Allans klassischen bildhauerischen Ansatz
deutlich werden. Zugleich dient dieser Prozess zu der Herauslösung aus der ursprünglichen
Geschichte und Funktion. Konsequente Beziehungen der Objekte untereinander werden
aufgebaut, eine Logik entsteht die ursprüngliche Funktionalität und Neuordnung oszillieren
lässt.
Der 1986 in Darvel, Schottland geborene Keith Allan studierte an der Glasgow School of Art
von 2004 - 2008 und graduierte mit einem Bachelor in Fine Art Sculpture and Environmental
Art.
